This place was sort of magical for us.
We had checked out of our hotel, Hôtel Le Saint-Paul, just across the street, and had a few hours to kill before our train. It was a beautiful day, and this looked like the perfect spot to sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by.
My wife ordered a cider, I got a comically large bottle of Labatt 50, and we settled into a table outside. That's when the fun started.
A couple of guys from Texas took the next table and we struck up a conversation. Their wives were off getting massages while they waited to board their cruise ship. We spent the next half hour swapping stories about their adventures and our shared experiences with Texas.
After they left, a local with a beautiful full-sized poodle took their place. He turned out to be Guy Robert Roussel, a French-language author and delightful conversationalist. Soon a couple of his friends joined us, making the conversation even more entertaining.
As the place filled up, mostly with locals, it seemed as though everyone knew everyone else. Then, to complete the circle, the guys from Texas returned with their now-relaxed wives on their way to the cruise ship.
Think Cheers, but with a lot of French accents.
We'd stopped in just to kill a few hours. Instead, we ended up with one of those wonderfully unexpected travel experiences you couldn't possibly have planned.
Like I said, it was sort of magical for us. Maybe it will be for you, too. read more
