In my opinion, there's nothing like a stand alone fish market (as opposed to those that have a little fish section in a gourmet shop) unless it's Fairway or a similar store. I absolutely adore seafood and it's also my favorite animal protein. I've been shopping here since forever and I really like their variety of seafood. There's even a sushi section (although I've never tried) that appears to be appealing and fresh. On my favorite food holiday--Christmas Eve--when the Italian (and my family) tradition is everything seafood (no less than 7), I always find myself shopping here. This market is very crowded around that time of the year. This store has fresh and frozen assortment of both shellfish and seafood. Mussels, clams, scallops, squid, shrimp, Branzino, trout, filet of sole, filet of trout, filet of whiting, sea bass, lump crab meat, king crab sticks, salmon, crab cakes and a lot more. I tend to stay away from Tilipia and Basa. You might notice at any fish market, it's the cheapest fish by the pound. And that's because it's imported from murky waters. At least that's what I've read and believe. In addition to a variety of seafood, there are various accompaniments & condiments such as cocktail sauces, Panko breadcrumbs, tarter sauce, fish fry batters, etc. I don't think they carry every variety of fish, but there's enough. And it's fresh. One thing to note---at times, they will sell out of certain fish. That's when you put plan B into place after the disappointment. BTW, I bought one pound of clean squid ringlets. I made a fresh sauce to accompany my squid ink pasta :) Good stuff here.

Of course I would prefer that we were not in the middle of a panorama but one silver lining is that businesses like Pierless whose products would've been inaccessible to plebeian folks like me pre-panorama, have now pivoted from wholesale to direct to consumer delivery. Their online ordering process is straight-forward and they actually delivered the fish in the window of time promised. They even sent over email and text updates when they were on their way to my home. I ordered three kinds of fish for poke-- salmon, tuna, and hamachi. They came already diced in large pieces and extremely fresh. This alone lasted me over 4 meals throughout the week and was well worth the $19 just for the poke fish. I also ordered an enormous sashimi grade tuna loin that I used to make a delicious tuna tataki, and have so much leftover that I'm freezing the rest. The 1 lb of cod I got made for an amazing miso cod that I ate with my lunch all week as well. The tobiko I got came in a little jar and added a touch of sweetness and texture to my poke. I really couldn't be happier with the value and freshness of the fish from Pierless. Everything was packaged neatly and the cuts were so clean it made making fish at home so approachable. Thanks to them I can feel like a seasoned sushi chef in my own home.

The fish is mostly local and all sustainably caught. It's $21.50/week and you find out what the weekly fish is the day before the pickup. They tell you where your fish came from and even the boat that it was caught on and some great recipe suggestions (often NYT Cooking recipes- -apparently Melissa Clark is a customer of the store). They also have special items (usually shellfish) available most weeks. Having to celebrate several holidays in isolation/just the 2 of us, we really enjoyed being able to make it special with caviar and shrimp cocktail all from Mermaids Garden (special items). If you go to the shop, the prices are definitely higher than the norm but what you are getting is far superior ...and how many shops can tell you the name of the boat on which your fish was caught and in some instances how the fish was sustainably caught even if the type of fish had been over-fished in the past.
