Everything came out hot, delicious, and well seasoned. The Dungeness crab was a standout, and it was refreshing to enjoy such a wide variety of seafood and traditional dishes. My wife was pleasantly surprised by the entire meal. The interior was nicely done and felt different from many other Chinese restaurants in Brooklyn. Service was attentive, and they seated us in a corner where we could enjoy our family conversation without constant interruption. Always check expiration dates, because there are often products past their date on the shelf. They do take returns if you realize that you bought something expired, just show them your receipt to prove it was already past the date when you purchased it. There's no scale to weigh produce, and you have to watch carefully at the register, because sometimes the scale might not be correctly calibrated, or there might be something leaning on it. I was once charged for four times the weight of produce I purchased, but luckily I noticed, went back, had a different register reweigh the items, and they processed the return minus the correct charge of the items. It's definitely inconvenient to have to be so vigilant when all I want to do is pay the listed price for groceries that aren't expired, but at least they correct their mistakes on a case by case basis. You're better off at Isaac Apple or Carnival, but this place is ok. Especially if you like the Frank Sinatra soundtrack.

As you walk inside, you immediately notice the long stainless steel counter where a man stands expertly filleting something as though it's no big deal. On either side of the room, large cases full of ice reveal a plethora of sea creatures. Salmon, Tuna, Octopus, Scallops...Conch. Yes, conch. It's exotic. It's exciting. It makes me want to learn to be a better cook. The first time I came in, an Italian-accented fellow in front of me was buying up calamari, scallops, and shrimp. I immediately pictured a delicious seafood risotto and my mouth started to water. I wasn't that ambitious myself, but walked out of there with a decent sized salmon steak ($7.99/pound the day I went) that took me two days to eat. (Not that this is necessarily desirable with seafood, next time I'll buy a smaller portion). My next trip in I opted for a tuna steak ($11.99/pound). Both times, it was delicious. How can he offer such a low price? 1. Instead of being a "specialty foods" shop, this is just a shop for the local post-Soviet community. They eat lots of caviar and fish products, so he has higher volume compared to a high end grocery in a fashionable area. It's more of a normal product than a rare specialty. 2. Because he has high volume, he can buy a wholesale tub of black caviar and sell it before it spoils. By comparison, most places sell small vacuum packed portions in metal tins. This approach spares the cost of laying an intermediary for tinning and apportioning. 3. The caviar is unbranded, so there is less marketing cost baked in and no prestige premium. Instead, his reputation among his local customers serves to give comfort that his product is good. So it is no-frills but a fantastic deal. In my case, hackleback (American sturgeon) caviar was sold at $220 a pound. Note that at a specialty shop in Manhattan you can find hackleback for up to $70 an OUNCE. The product was delicious and all my guests were extremely pleased. Even picky eaters who had never tried caviar kept coming back for more. I will say, though the product was fresh and very flavorful, it did not have a perfect "pop." There were pops on many eggs (not all), but the popping was a little lackluster if still present. Small price to pay in my opinion. Roman's shop is an hour away from me by subway, but after my experience, I can't imagine buying caviar anywhere else in the city!
