I explained that we wanted to gauge the portion sizes first and would order more as we went. As we realized the plates were quite small, we ordered a fourth item, and later, a fifth. At that point, the waiter actually lectured us, claiming the kitchen doesn't like orders placed at different times and that everything must be ordered upfront. When an older gentleman (who seemed to be checking on tables) stopped by, I asked him if this "all at once" ordering rule was real.
