Based on the dishes we tried, I don't think I'd recommend this place. My friends and I shared the dahi batata puri, chinese bhel, and ragda pattice. The best of the bunch was the dahi batata puri, but it still didn't quite hit the spot. It was definitely on the sweeter side and I felt like the dahi/yogurt wasn't as creamy as I prefer. The chinese bhel was okay, but didn't have much flavor. Lastly the ragda pattice had so much potential. The flavor was there, but it was insanely spicy- even as someone with a med/high spice tolerance. You could feel the burn traveling down to your stomach. All of us found it unbearable and worse of all felt the affects for a day after. I'm not one to write negative reviews often, but this experience at Maya Kitchen Food Truck in Sunnyvale-Cupertino Border warrants it. Yesterday, I ordered a Vada Pav, Shalimar Egg Mughlai (on their recommendation from their list of egg dishes), and a Veg Frankie -- and honestly, none of it lived up to the hype(5 stars currently) or price point. Vada Pav: It was okay. The "mirchi" served alongside was literally a raw Thai green chili. Really? At least pan-fry it with some salt and oil to enhance the flavor. For over $10 with taxes, this was already pricier than better Vada Pavs you can get at places like Elco Drive, and yet it offered nothing exceptional. Frankie: This one made me genuinely angry. It was a soggy maida roll stuffed with the same aloo masala from the Vada Pav, plus a few sad shreds of cabbage. That's it. And they had the audacity to charge $12 for it. ($1.50 for cheese, lol I am glad we didn't add)This isn't a Frankie -- it's a lazy repackaged Vada Pav with no flavor or creativity. They threw in some pickled jalapeños on the side, which only added confusion. If you're running a fusion menu(well partially), at least mention it upfront instead of misleading customers. Egg Shalimar Mughlai: At $13, it was passable but still not impressive. The bun on the side was not toasted or anything. Better than the Frankie, but nothing I'd recommend or return for. I was so excited for trying this place but, overall, this place is overpriced, underwhelming, and frankly disappointing. If your Vada Pav and Frankie are practically identical, maybe inform customers before they order both. I wouldn't recommend Maya Kitchen -- save your time, appetite and money and go somewhere else. This is my favorite Indian food truck!! Food is absolutely amazing and the staff are so kind and down to earth. They gave us great recommendations when we didn't know what to order and we loved everything we got, in addition to being able to customize spice level as I am not someone who can handle my heat. My meal was the perfect spice level for me. They have a cute seating area with string lights and heaters for evening visits, and plenty of tables and chairs so don't shy away coming with a group. Meals came with paratha, rice, raita, and a gulab Jamun. Curries and main dishes were a generous portion that I wasn't able to finish. Falooda and mango lassi were both 10/10 compliments to the meal as well. Overall highly recommend this spot! Will be back next time I'm craving Indian food. read more

This is simply my favorite Indian food truck + restaurant in the area! The first time I visited was during their opening week quite a while ago now and I've taken a long time to write a review. They waited 10 minutes beyond closing time for me to pickup the food the first time and the owner Paul also offered me complimentary chai (and also a few times after that, whenever I went to pickup food). I'd say I've visited once every week or at least every other week and have pretty much tried all of the menu and each dish has its own unique authentic flavor, and I'm blown away by that. While I'd vouch for every single dish, I definitely have my favorites. Kohlapuri Desi Murgh - Probably one of their trademark dishes. Great portions of both the dish and the chicken, slightly smoky gravy with flavor of coconut very authentic. Definitely the best version of this dish I've had in the Bay Area. The dish itself is not super oily but I make a special request to keep it lower. Ghazali Maratha Chicken - Tomato based gravy, slightly tangy because of the same. You get couple of chicken leg pieces with the dish. Again, good portions. I do highly recommend it. Shalimar Egg Mughlai Hara Masala - Green colored gravy with a significant flavor of garlic and cilantro. Super rich without being heavy on butter! Anda Keema Pav - It was different from a traditional keema for me. I expected this to be a dryer dish but it was not. It was not a "Keema". I was doubtful if they gave me a different egg dish but well I tried all of their egg dishes so probably not. Delicious, nevertheless, so I didn't care. The egg dishes come with Pav typically, and here as well. Peri Peri Paneer Sandwich - This is a repeat order from me. They grill it so well and it makes it sorta crunchy which is my favorite part. Lightly spiced paneer with mayo/peri peri sauce. Comes with chips (lays). Soya Chaap (Thali) - Creamy gravy as you can see in the picture. I've gotten this a couple of times and I personally loved it the first time but the second time I somehow felt it was a little less flavorful. The thali comes with paratha, rice, raita (not your usual!), and gulab jamun. Pretty filling. I've also tried a couple of their other specials like the chicken tikka frankie, and the chicken shami kebab pav. They may not be on the online menu but you can ask for them! Few of their chaat and other vegetarian dishes, I'm yet to try. I did try their Misal Pav and Vada Pav (2) in their opening week and I also highly recommend them. Extremely friendly owners I must say. They take customizations in terms of spice and oil/butter. I ask for spicy every time and it's actually not too spicy, just about right. They're also always adding new dishes and are extremely particular about the quality and flavor. I expect to be a repeat customer. New truck alert and a very good one! My family visited this when I was out of town a few weeks back and insisted I had to try it. We got: Kolhapuri desi murgh thali: (5/5): thick and richly flavored gravy. They didn't skimp on anything nor did they beef it up with fat or dairy. It was spicy but didn't cause a tummy upset and just awakened all my senses. Not just awaken, it sent my taste buds dancing in joy. Soya chaap thali (5/5): it was my first time trying soya chaap. The gravy in this case was definitely made with almonds. Lightly colored but again full of flavor. Very different from the chicken so they didn't take shortcuts by using same gravy base across the dishes. Salimar egg mughalai Hara masala (4/5): this was recommended by the owner. Gravy in this case was green and I could taste cilantro. It came with pav buns on the side. The thalis came with a paratha, rice, raita and a gulab jamun. I was impressed. Not because the food was excellent for food truck standards but because the food was outstanding. Keep in mind that I just returned from a trip to India so my metrics are pretty high. The pani puri was so flavorful and refreshing and reminded me of the ones I had in India, except the puri here is a lot crispier! I also tried the soya chaap and the anda kheema pav. The soft bread was toasted and buttered to make it crispier, and it was super yummy. For drinks, I ordered their falooda, and while it was loaded with fillings, I found it too sweet and creamy for my liking and left half of it. The chai was good, but I think in general I prefer the really strong types like Irani chai. Their dishes look like not much, but it is very very filling!
