I hesitate to give this review, as I am not a local and my experience was the first only experience with this shop. I understand that sometimes there is an off day or under-trained staff, etc. I was very excited to visit this shop for a snack and a quick coffee to go for my road trip. I went out of my way to enter the town to stop here because I had done some quick scanning before my journey and saw that the shop was highly rated and seemed to have many food items that spoke to me. When I stopped in, I took a look around and could not see any sign of the extensive food menu that I had viewed online. Maybe I did a poor job of looking, but I was in a rush to get back on the road and they were closing soon. Because the menu was not obvious, I just asked about the muffins. The employee mentioned she had not tried all the muffins and couldn't advise me, so I went with the Chai. I also ordered a medium latte for my journey. I cannot even express to you how disappointed I was to find that my coffee was probably the worst I had tasted in my life. It had a very strange taste. It was also WAY too hot, which I take as a sign of an inexperienced or poorly trained employee. I couldn't even power through the flavor for the sake of the caffeine for my drive. I threw it away after 2 very painful (b/c of taste) sips. And the muffin. was. awful. I was so hungry that I choked down half of it anyway, but the chai flavor was sharp, bitter, and unappealing. No, it's not that I can't handle spice or don't know what masala chai is supposed to taste like. I have tasted a variety of masala chai combinations and flavor profiles. This was just very poorly executed. I will not be stopping here on my journeys again. Sorry. read more

Very cutesy place we found on our way to Boone. First of all - GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS GALORE including GF bread for the sandwiches. Second - their list of specialty drinks is endless and i wish i could have tried so many but understandably I would have been bouncing off the walls. :) We got a caramel mocha which had perfect espresso and yummy foam but the best part was the Breakfast bowl for me. It was so good and the sausage was wow! The boyfriend got the egg and cheese sandwich on an Everything bagel and he thoroughly enjoyed that as well. What a great surprise!!! The decor and overall vibe of this place is outstanding. The coffee is perfect and our breakfast was outstanding! Only problem I have is that they aren't in my hometown in California! This is a must visit place in Hickory! I'd so suggest you get their breakfast burrito and the avocado toast to start your day. The employees were very nice and patient. This is a great place so come if you want to relax, grab a coffee with friends, or need a quiet place to study or do homework! They have lots of seating and if you're a fan of the tv show FRIENDS, you'll love this place because that's what I got the vibes of. They have board/card games if you're planning to stay a while to hang out, and LOTS of art work to purchase if you're into that. They also have handmade jewelry for sale which is super cool and I actually purchased a pair for $10! Tried it for the first time today with my teenage son . I was a little uncertain because they have so many bad reviews. The women that served us were friendly enough. Latte was hot and warmed me up . ( loved the Christmas flavor " grandmas cookies" ) The speaker that they use to talk through the plexiglass is a great addition. They were quite busy on a Monday at 9am so good for them ! Came in with my service animal and family to buy coffee and Christmas gifts. Staff didn't say hello, just asked if my dog was a service animal. I said yes (and I carry the necessary info). They then shit talked me and everyone else with service animals, calling them "emotional support animals," for "losers," and that they should be able to tell anyone with a service animal to leave immediately... while I stood about 5ft away listening. I was particularly shocked when the short blonde girl said they should be able to ask people with service animals to leave. I was given my service dog for severe PTSD. I don't dine out on it, but this is technically a disability. Me and my family left after receiving our drinks, which we paid for in full. We won't be recommending, won't be coming back. I'm sure it's just because the staff are all glorified teenagers and don't understand the severity of PTSD, and I hope they never have to. Ive just never experienced such disrespect in public, especially from the entire staff of a business ive frequented. The blonde woman led the charge of her 3-4 minute rant about how pathetic service animals are, but her colleagues agreed. This place was really nice with a friendly staff. There is plenty of seating of varying variety throughout which is good. It definitely has a positive atmosphere that is also quiet - good for studying, relaxing or for casual conversation. Whenever I see that a coffee shop has Cortado on the menu I have to try it and this is my measuring point for that's coffee shop. Of the Cortados that I've had they definitely match up with some of the best. It was served properly in a ceramic cup and had proper proportions of espresso and milk. Relaxing, studying or just a good coffee drink - this is the place to stop. Definitely will return and you should go also. read more

They also have monthly poetry reading and monthly art receptions - showcasing their gallery's artist-of-the-month. It's also great to support a local, independent business - especially one in the heart of downtown. An added bonus is that the proprietors are extremely community conscious and active in supporting local nonprofits. This is the second time I've been here. And I love the atmosphere. It's very relaxing and calming. I would highly recommend this place. Plus they use biodegradable straws and cups, which I love! It's a local coffee shop and It's great to support local businesses in my opinion. They have a great selection of coffee flavors. The art work is amazing and so beautiful and you can purchase some of it too. It is very artisty and they have poetry readings and open mic night for those of you who enjoy those types of things. I do not want to give a star, but I have to I order to leave this review. If possible, I would give a negative 5 stars. This sentiment is due to the owner, Julie, targeting my child with her passive aggressive attitude. Just today, my daughter and a few friends from school, met up at this café for drinks and to work on school work. Most of them ordered drinks and even a few of them went back for more items. My daughter did not purchase anything (she does not prefer their coffee and was there to do her part on the assignment.)... at some point, Julie, the owner, approached the group to say they couldn't loiter for free and the children spoke up to say they were customers etc... At which point Julie, points to my child and another, "what about those two?" ... and again she states that if they wanted a free public space, they should go to the library. My daughter never spoke up, she's very shy, instead she went to the bathroom, in tears, and texted me to please pick her up. I got there five minutes later to find that Julie had already left. I was prepared to pay her for the space utilized by these awesome kids. (They are all straight A orchestra kids, in the Beta club etc) they are not the rough and rugged type kids who go and make scenes and disrespect the space they occupy. Julie should be ashamed of herself, making my daughter feel "less than" making her feel unwelcome and leaving her in tears for the rest of the afternoon. (I just heard more sniffling from our living room). These kids will never return nor will I - and I hope many others don't either. P.S. as of 6pm Monday- no call has been received from Julie. Another concerned parent called her and they spoke. Julie proceeded to lie about the entire situation. Disgraceful Julie. Again , you ought to be ashamed. And I will see you in the morning since you dare not call me. read more

What a charming little coffee shop in hickory North Carolina. Great tomato soup. Atmosphere was calm and relaxing. They have traditional cafe seating and they also have several couches and comfortable chairs to sit in. They have staged areas where folks can congregate and talk in a circle. They are in the downtown Hickory area. I really liked the tomato soup and cheese croissant. Bathroom was clean. Nice place to get a quick lunch bite. read more

Disappointing. I love my coffee, and would say that at least for several years, I'm a bit of a coffee connoisseur. By no means am I a "professional coffee taster," should such a thing exist, but I have high expectations. Because of this, I've come to where I like to know what I'm drinking - I want to know the source and any flavors to better my experience. I visited awhile back and there were two other people inside drinking coffee, and there was a man behind the bar. After a pretty quick conversation, I found him to be at least the manager, but likely the owner (I didn't ask specifically). I asked for the cold brew coffee (which is almost always how I test the quality of a cafe or coffee), and asked "What type of coffee is this?" as he was pouring. His response: "I can't tell you." I, of course, assumed he was just joking with me, kind of like the whole, "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you" response when you ask someone their job. I grinned and waited, and he poured my coffee and handed it to me, as I handed him cash. "So what type of coffee is it?" I asked again. "I can't tell you," he said, in all seriousness. "Really?" "Yes, there's no telling what you would do with that information." At this point, I knew he had to be joking, and I just waited, but he just continued, "It's a secret, I don't tell anyone." "Seriously?" I asked. "I like to know what I'm drinking." "Too bad," was his response, and then as if to realize he was pissing me off, he added more jovially, "But trust me, you'll like it." So I finished took my change and coffee and left without saying anything else. The coffee was not bad, and was definitely better than Starbucks, but definitely not amazing enough to warrant this type of secretive attitude. The owner/manager is a joke - it's like he expects that his blend is just so amazing that people are coming in to spy on him and steal his "state secrets."
