My husband and I were on a little getaway and decided to try the Hen & Egg for breakfast. It's a small establishment in a quaint town. It is a bustling restaurant with a good menu full of option from sweet treats like stuffed French toast, to savory make your own scramble bowls with lots of choices for toppings. This was a fun place to stop for breakfast! My brother was in town, we were trying to find an easy place to meet halfway, and honestly there are limited restaurants. We found the Hen & Egg and were very happy with our choice! The menu was very large, the service was great. I couldn't drink my coffee as fast as they were willing to refill, and it was well priced. For the two of us, it was $21 for two coffees and two meals. Portions were good as well. My family has a place not too far and I said they need to add it to their list - we will be back for sure! read more

I am so sorry we didn't start going here years ago when they opened, I feel robbed to have lost time with them! Ok, so it is just a breakfast spot and a few lunch items during the week. Breakfast/brunch is all the rage and most of the nicer chain restaurants that specialize in this are pretty expensive. Not only is this place fantastic, it is priced so fairly that I'm scared to even say it in this review because they may decide to raise their prices... But I'll be back even if they do! Since we had never been and because, why not... We ordered a little of everything to give it a try. My wife loves eggs Benedict, and she approves of theirs after eating it on Saturday morning! We also tried a pecan Belgian waffle, French toast, scrambled eggs with sausage patties, and hash brown casserole. Not to mention a couple slices of sourdough toast just to give it a try. Again, we ordered a lot of food and all of it was excellent breakfast fare! We are already planning our return visit this coming Saturday! We're gonna stick with the French toast, eggs, Benedict, and I think I'm going to go for one of the chimichanga breakfast things! It's a small restaurant and very tight seats, however, they turn the tables over quickly and everyone was in a good mood. They told us our wait was going to be about 20 minutes at 9:30 on Saturday morning and it ended up being more like 30 minutes, but that's OK. Oh! What a unique breakfast experience! Nestled in the quaint, clean, and artistic main street of Newton NC, we enjoyed the hospitality of the Hen and Egg. We were seated promptly and welcomed by our friendly waitress. They were used to efficiently handling a family with small kids so we never felt out of place or in the way. Our food was ready before we knew it, the kids got pancakes and covered waters, i got eggs and toast w bacon. i've never had sourdough toast like this. Texture was more like the luscious crust of a casserole than your normal yeasty yoke towel. (They've ruined normal toast for me) Every part of this breakfast was prepared to perfection- the eggs were cooked to order, the bacon was crispy and the hash brown casserole was creamy and cheesy. On this visit the Eggs Royale were outstanding- Lox poach eggs with hollandaise sauce on toasted English muffin. Served with a generous portion of hashbrowns lightly salted. With orange juice and coffee. Great breakfast on a cold December morning, good service, fair price and outstanding food. Definitely my preferred place for breakfast in the vicinity of Newton, NC. I have family in the Newton-Conover area and The Hen and Egg is a must when I come to visit. The place is always busy, has great service, and has a cozy feel. The menu has a wide selection of items and there are a few items that Hen and Egg has their own special twist. As an example, the Monte Cristo has a balsamic glaze and adds a different spin to an old staple. The portions are good size and I always leave satisfied. I am not a local, but when I am in town this is one of my local go to spots. Highly recommended! read more

This place is truly a gem. I was in town this weekend to see Ace Frehley at the performing arts center. I ate breakfast the next morning at this establishment and my lord it was epic. Awesome place for breakfast! My wife had the California Benedict, I had the chorizo chimichanga with hash brown casserole. They have fancy coffees as well as regular fare, I got some almond milk with my black cup. The wait was a bit long, around 40 minutes, but we enjoyed walking around the downtown area a bit and taking in some shops both before and after eating. We arrived about 10 AM, if we had gotten there sooner I think are we would've been less. We where they close at 11 AM. Newton is a great town, and really seems to have a lot going on in terms of urban development. Service was fantastic, other customers we met were friendly. Enjoyed visiting with some folks out front while waiting. No cell phone notification while waiting, just listen for your name outside. I was in town on business and popped in for a quick lunch with a couple of colleagues. They both had breakfast fare while I had a cheeseburger. Even though it was crowded, service was excellent and efficient. The food was home-cooked and delicious and the price was straight out of the 1990s. Really glad I stopped in. read more

What an amazing restaurant! We got in around 1:15pm knowing with a group of 6 we were pushing it. At no point did we feel unwelcome or rushed. Deborah was an absolutely amazing server and such a sweet lady. The food was phenomenal, we were recommended the lemon crepes for the table and they were by far the highlight of my morning. I cannot see how a bad meal was served here. Place packed on a Monday lunchtime. To the "woke" sheeple 20 somethings whining about "no masks" just stay home then while the free thinkers go about living our lives. So...weve visited twice and between the six of us everyone truly enjoyed their food. Okay, portions are large...plenty to fill even the biggest appetites; for those who aren't bears, there's likely to be leftovers. ;) The prices are fair/reasonable especially for the portions given. Their scrambled eggs with cheese are so good. The eggs are light and fluffy which is such a nice break from the usual omelet-textured "scrambled" eggs Im served most places. Our first trip I tried the monte cristo sandwich. Overall it was good, but, the egg flavor on the French toast was way too strong and overpowering. They definitely didn't scrimp on the sandwiches meats which was awesome. Unfortunately I couldn't get beyond the egg issue to eat more than 1/4 of the sandwich - which is the reason for a 4, rather than 5, star review. My bf absolutely loved the stuffed French toast he ordered; after taking a bite I have to agree that its AMAZING. It is sweet, rich, and plentiful with fresh ingredients. Their BBQ is flavorful, tender and moist and their chicken pot pie is similar to homemade. The atmosphere is bright and inviting. The decor is simple but pleasant. And, its clean. I mean...amazingly clean. Noticeably different from 99% of other restaurants type clean. BONUS...their little corner Cafe tucked away just beyond the dining area. Not only is their drip coffee fresh and yummy, but their speciality coffees are super as well. Street parking is ideal if you can snag a spot, but theres additional parking literally less than a minute walk away. Theyre tucked away in the downtown area which is full of unique shops and lots of interesting buildings and decor. Even with the 45 minute drive the food is completely worth it and this place is easily one of our favs. read more
