Something was just off with the cook the night we were there. There are so many Indian restaurants to try out nowadays I feel like you can't be off your game any night or you will lose a customer and they may never come back. They had me at chaat!!…read more I love truth in advertising. Whereas most Indian restaurants offer 2-3 kinds of chaat, there's so many here you have to come back to try them all. Come just for gol gappa (pani puri) or pao (pav) bhaji, which I haven't seen together on a menu in ages. Definitely get the chole bhatura (bhatoori), the bread is perfectly doughy without being greasy. The chole was good too, nice spice and flavour depth, not too runny or too thick, and not sweet. I judge an Indian restaurant by the quality of it's chole (chana masala), and this version was better than average. I had to try the kulfi and it came out beautifully presented with just a little faloodah, a delicious treat. We enjoyed our experience here. The server/owner was keen to explain his future plans for the newly renamed restaurant. He was attentive without being overbearing or pushy as we slowly chose which dishes to try. He showed us to mix the green chilli and tamarind sauces without being condescending, and when we ordered our food as hot spice level, not a hint of food racism was detected. The complimentary pappadams were a nice touch. We came at around 6:30pm, and were the sole customers until about 7:30pm, when the restaurant quickly started to fill. We picked up some sweets on the way out, they tasted not bad, fairly average. There were some pretty and creative sweets shaped and coloured like fruit. Recommended :) All this goodness without the trip to India; great flavours brought back fond memories. Will be back to try the non-chaat dishes.

Look for a continuous stream of cars lined up, waiting to get their Tim Horton's fix. Kerala has been open for a few months now and specialize in south Indian food, which seems harder to find compared to their northern counterpart. I'm trying to recall how they came up on my food radar but I'm drawing blanks. J and I decided to check them out on a late Sunday afternoon. We came around 2:30pm so obviously the place wasn't too busy but there were a couple of patrons inside. The interior is nothing fancy but it is simple and homey. Not sure why Kerala claims this to be their "special" menu. LOL. Dosas appear to be one of their speciality items here as several tables were ordering them for lunch. I've had dosas several times and wanted to try a couple other things on their menu so we skipped out this time. A couple curries along with quite a few breads I've never had or heard of before, kothu paratha and chaats (savoury snacks). Chaats are street food snacks - wish we had tried a few of these instead as I'm a sucker for anything originating from street stalls. Biriyani and thali round things out. Their fresh cocktail juices are a perfect way to get your dose of healthiness in - Goat biryani ($11.49) - made Kozhikodan style, baked basmati rice layered with spices and topped with cashew, raisins, deep fried onion and served with hot pickle and raitha. This biryani was pretty similar to what we had when we went to Chutney. Simple but the goat was tasty. I liked the combination of cashews and raisins which gave the rice some sweetness and crunchy texture. - Mushroom masala ($8.99) - we decided to try one of their vegetables curries and opted for their mushroom masala. I love all things mushroom but the flavour here was pretty one dimensional. Serving portion was also on the small side. - Appam ($1.25) - we decided to try a couple of their breads although they were out of a few that I've never had before. The appam was the best out of three but quite plain. Odd that there was no sauce or condiment to accompany any of the breads so we resorted to using the curry as a dip. Couldn't help but compare them to Sambol's amazing hoppers (which is like appam's cousin in Sri Lankan). - Kerala parotha ($1.50) - the kerala parotha is a layered flatbread. Think of it as an Indian style roti canai without that amazing Malaysian deliciousness. It was somewhat flaky but lacked any real flavour. - Chapati ($1.00) - the chapatti is unleavened flatbread. Apparently, this one is like regular roti. I wasn't a fan. Skip it. - Sweet lassi ($4.00) and Energizer ($4.00) - I was intrigued by their sweet and salty lassi's, both of which I've never had. I decided to go with the former and for me, it pretty much tasted like a sweet yogurt drink. Refreshing and light but mango lassi is tastier in my books. J ordered The Energizer which is made up of carrots, apple, orange, beet and ginger and claims to reduce fatigue, circulatory weakness, cholesterol and blood pressure. I had a sip and you can tell it's fresh. If you've ever juiced your own drinks, you'll know what I'm talking about. Overall, everything was decent but perhaps we would have had a better meal if we had stuck to their dosas or focused on some of their speciality savoury snacks. If you're looking for Indian food that is light and healthy, Kerala is worth a shot. Plus, it's a stone throw's away from Southgate so perfect for a before or after shopping meal.

I asked the chef what size is the bowl of soup , he told me the small bowl . I mentioned its too small for a $7 soup and he said no problem ill make a bigger bowl. Two bowls of soup show up . We start eating and the lady manager starts dumping buckets of ice into their buffet while breaking the ice with a hammer . Very annoying when there is no music playing in the background and you are having your meal with the ambience of an ice factory . We go to pay the bill and are charged 27 dollars for 2 small bowls of soup ( one chicken & one veg ) mostly frozen veggies in one and frozen veggies with a few chunks of chicken in the other I paid the bill and asked the lady at the counter if it was justified to charge $27 for two snack size bowls of soup , her reply was that " You asked for double portions so you have to pay for 2 soups " . Hot & sour soup is included in the buffet which is only a few dollars more . I told her that and she became defensive " You orders soup not buffet " . Well if someone had told me that , i would have had the buffet . Complete rip off . Pathetic customer service . Never going back . Pictures attched of the small bowl for $7 and the large bowl for $14 . Both are a joke .

Iddiyappam with Beef curry Combo (CAD 13): The iddiyappm was okay-ish but the beef curry was just water with pieces of beef floating around. The masala wasnt proper. 2. Podi Masala Dosa: I had high hopes on this one, but to no avail. There was way too much podi more than what you would spread in a dosa. Three chutneys were served out of which I can confidently say only one was fresh- the coconut chutney (tasted just okay), the other two were packaged sauces. Sambar was served alongside- this was the only thing better compared to all of that which was ordered. 3. Masala Vada with Sambar: A plate with two vada's served with coconut chutney. The vada was very soggy and did not taste fresh. On providing feedback to the staff on premises, we were told that the below average quality/taste of food was due to the rush at the hotel. Today, Jassi kindly agreed to help me and my son with a project we're working on for my hubby's birthday -- Jassi is such a kind-hearted man, and he never ceases to amaze me.
