Best place to buy sushi grade sashimi! I really like how you can pick your own piece of fish and have it sliced or made into sushi for you. Lots of fresh options but do come early cause some options do sell out fast. You can also purchase other frozen seafoods or Japanese items at the store.
We came to check out the store on the recommendation from a friend. The parking lot is small and tight with vehicles coming and going. It's easy to drive by the store as it's in a small plaza. Be on the look out for MEC. Taro's Fish is on the east side of MEC. It's part grocery and part takeout sushi restaurant. The grocery portion has products like rice, sauces, nori, pickled ginger, miso soup, okonomiyaki flour, tempura flour, packets of curry, cod roe, noodles, drinks, slices of mille crepe, daifuku mochi, dorayaki, freezers with individual portions of ramen including toppings that've been vacuumed sealed, fish fillets and fins, ice cream, cheesecake, ice cream mochi, wafers, fridges with fish fillets, octopus tentacles, clams, roe, platers of packaged sashimi and fish heads. We found the grocery product prices to be quite high when compared to other stores. I suppose if you live in the area this would be a great place to purchase some pantry items as well as pick up sushi instead of visiting multiple shops but that wasn't it for us.
It is one of the top-notch places to get fresh sashimi-grade seafood; it is extremely fresh. I would say the service is okay, not the greatest service you would get, so that is a major deduction in this review. Hours are extremely limited, so if you are planning to eat here, make sure you grab it early enough as they close at 6pm! Prices are not that cheap, so expect to pay quite a bit for the quality fish you get. The ambiance is moderate, it is just a small fish market. But you can see the things they do! (i.e. open concept: making your platter, sushi, sashimi, etc., and slicing your fish to sashimi!). Edit: I re-visited again 2 days ago. They were closed during the holidays, but this place looks new! The place looks much cleaner, and the service was better than the many times I visited last year. We purchased 1 pre-made spicy salmon and ordered fresh torched salmon maki. It costs $.50-$1 more if you order fresh. But if you are going for torched sushi, definitely go for fresh. My previous review was 3/5 at this place, but after my recent visit, I am changing it to 4/5. (The previous rating was 3/5).
I've been meaning to try this place for years, but never got around to it. Everyone always told me how good and how fresh their fish was. Today, we finally tried the Spicy salmon roll, tako wasabi, and freshly sliced salmon sashimi. The salmon was SO fresh! Better than any other sushi restaurant I've been to. I found the prices to be cheaper too. It was about $12 for 10 pcs. I bought it as a slab, and asked the sushi chef to cut it into slices for me (You can also ask them to dice it if you plan on making your own poke salad). 5/5 The tako wasabi was wonderful. Fresh with a sharp wasabi kick. I will definitely be going back for more! 5/5 Lastly the salmon roll was good, perhaps a bit better than some restaurants, but not that memorable. 3/5 Overall, I would definitely go again!
TLDR: quite pricey but taste good; some people are nice; fresh-er fish than most sushi restaurants; good amount of water in sushi rice; good sushi rice!! I went here for my birthday sushi. Japanese food is my go-to food cause if you've been to Japan, you'll know how much they care about the food and its preparation. Taro give me that vibes somehow there seems to be favourites in this store, every store has one but if the store is full packed and there's a long line, it's frustrating when you see an able-bodied-full-of-ego person just cuts the line. But yeah, let's give 'benefit of the doubt' In terms of price, I bought 3 kinds of nigiri, two of each. So i have 6 nigiri in total and I paid $46 :) yep. That's the price. But yeah it's good. But for $46? Im not sure it justifies. I bought $75 worth of fish so I can make my own Chirashi or roll or nigiri. I'm really happy with it honestly. I would come back for that. The fish is fresh in my opinion. I would always come back for the products they sell but I think they could put more efficient process on their store.
Strictly take out only Variety of sashimi, sushi, frozen and other Japanese food items. In addition to pre-made sashimi/sushi items, you can order chirasi and special platters. It took them only 15 mins to make me a special premium nigiri set platter. Also got 2 large pieces of Uni for $18 which is reasonable Fresh and tasty
They have REAL seasoned cod roe! And very tasty uni. Yum :P Taro's Fish has been on my sashimiTO wish-list for a long time, and so we decided to splurge on as much sashimi as we could for Valentine's Day this year. Walking in I expected to see a sit-in area alike Diana's, but it was more like a take-out only food court/eatery, which was great because I wanted to savour all the yumminess in the comforts of my own home. Near the entrance there are asian snacks, condiments, and spices to form great asian dishes. The delicacies can be found within the large fridges at the back of the shop where you can buy meal-sized fish sashimis to be sliced on the spot by the chefs working at the other side of the store. I think these are for people who have tried everything and know what they're craving for. However, if you're new or unable to decide which ones you want, you can always go for the sashimi/sushi sets that come in regular and deluxe portions. I belong to the second type of customer, and was wowed at the different types of sashimi. I got a deluxe tray set, and then grabbed what I really came here for - UNI/Sea Urchin. Noticed how i capitalized it for importance. There was Vancouver, BC Uni and Hokkaido Uni. Having tried Hokkaido Uni before, I went for the Vancouver one as its said to be really creamy, but next time I'll know to get the Hokkaido Uni because I realized creaminess isn't the only thing that defines good uni - you definitely need the 'taste of the sea' too. I know the thing to look for in fresh sashimi is that if it's fresh, it will not have any fishy tastes. Everything in the set tasted like it just came out of the water, which is amazing. I think this is the freshest sushi I've had, almost like I was in Japan again. I did buy a wrapped portion to be sliced though: red snapper (tai) but they ran out so the lady suggested a different fish that has the similar crunchy, robust texture. Although next time I probably won't buy the foam-board and saran-wrapped uncut sashimi, because it wasn't as fresh tasting as the ones in the deluxe set. Maybe the plastic smell clung on? No idea. The freezer in the middle of the shop was a pleasant surprise. I was able to find seasoned cod roe for my mentaiko udon dish. I had been looking in asian grocery markets all over Toronto, and I finally found it here. Now I can use the seasoned roe to simmer with butter and fried kimchi to create a unami udon sauce. Blessed!! Inspired by the uni toast at Omai Sushi in Baldwin Village, I slabbed a piece of the creamy golden uni onto the freshly buttered and toasted bread. It was amazing, a rich flavour dance of the saltiness of the butter combined with the creamy texture of uni and the crispiness of the golden brown toast. 100% recommend for you to recreate this delectable snack at home, with the finest, freshest sea urchin from Taro's Fish. I'll be back again on another special occasion visit.
We were craving for really good fish for dinner. Since during the time of physical distancing, we find ourselves here to get some fish. We walked in and Taro was prepared with alcohol wipes at the door. With an attendant also at the door to control the flow of customers that goes in and out. Once we were indoors, we were salivating on all the goodies that was available. We see the fridge with all the yummy fish and sushi rolls. We were walking around and debating on what to get. So we got a bunch of stuff and then headed home. When we started eating during dinner time, we began to devour the food: bluefin chu-toro tasted sweet and fresh, and compared to other tuna sashimi, there's a distinctive sweetness. The ebi is also sweet and fresh. All the other goodies were amazing. Yes it was a bit pricey, but during these times. We can still enjoy the yummy food is wow.
The sashimi/sushi here is absolutely amazing. This was the freshest sashimi I have ever had in a while and I am so glad I discovered this spot, because I'll be visiting again soon! The platter of sashimi was so delicious and tasty. You can tell how fresh the fish was with each slice. You get to choose your fish in a grocery like environment and they will slice and prepare it for you. The chirashi bowl was also so flavourful and I liked how there was a good variety of fish! Honestly salivating just thinking about this spot and looking at all the (POV) pictures. There was a line - was about a 20 minute wait, but honestly it was so worth it! I can tell why it's so popular. The staff are also very knowledgeable and friendly.
December 10, 2021 - My friend wanted to check out this store. There nice selection on fresh seafood. My friend bought a $15 set for his brother and I bought the Spicy Deluxe Roll. It was yummy and the pieces were big. Definitely worth it.
Taro's Fish has been a staple for sushi grade seafood products, groceries and takeout. Their sushi and sashimi is always fresh. It's also a great place to stock up on your Uni (sea urchin) if your into that (we sure are). I find that it gets really busy especially for take out so pro tip - pre order ahead. it's a really small parking lot as well FYI.
Finally got a chance to visit Taro's fish last week! It's basically a Japanese grocery store that sells sushi, Japanese's snacks and sushi grade sashimi. They had a great selection of sashimi including, salmon, toro, scallop, tuna and octopus. I find the pricing to be a bang for your buck compared to ordering a-la-Carte sashimi at any fancy sushi restaurants. They even offer to slice your sashimi for you and there's even an option to add sushi rice for a small fee. Overall, the quality of the tako (octopus) and salmon sashimi was super fresh and delicious while the scallop sashimi was a bit disappointing, I've had fresher tasting ones at sushi restaurants. Honourable mention: their seaweed salad is also very tasty!
For the last few months, we order from this incredible take out joint/fish market/grocery store almost every week. The rolls are incredibly fresh and delicious, and either need nothing or just the smallest dab of soy sauce and wasabi. Favourite sushi in the entire city, and I have tried my fair share. The grocery store aspect is also really nice, but we generally just order pick up and do not enter at all. Go to order is the yellow tail roll, spicy salmon, torched salmon, eel and avocado roll, and with an extra piece of fresh salmon added in and sliced. Salivating just thinking about it, and planning to order again this weekend. Thank you Taro's fish, for being the best!

Like others have said this is a Japanese fish market, not a restaurant but they have a few chairs for you go sit and eat. We had the combo "sushi for 2" for $50; total of 30 pieces. Came with 9 kinds of assorted Nigiri (2 pieces for each type) a California roll and spicy salmon roll. On top of the combo, we picked a piece of salmon from the fridge, chef sliced into pieces of sashimi. Sashimi was very fresh and delicious; very reasonably priced for the quality you get. I enjoyed the torched sushi, well flavoured. The rolls are just OK, same quality as elsewhere. I'll come back for sashimi. read more

This is a fish store, so don't come in expecting a resturant experience. No one will serve you tea or hand you napkins when you decide to eat there. However, the fish here are amazing! I got the sushi special, kamikaze roll, anago nigiri and the chutoro nigiri. The sushi special was around $20 for (~15pcs) the kamikaze $6 (6pcs) and the anago and chutoro were $8 for two pieces. Overall, the environment is not great, but the fish is really really good. The salmon was plump, the chutoro had a good balance of fattiness and meatiness, and the anago had a strong, but tasty smokey flavour. I would recommend to get your fish here, but only for take out! read more
One word: VALUE! The prices are fair for the quality and quantity of fish you get! Unfortunately they were out of smaller packs of uni when I went, so call ahead! I got a sashimi platter and a couple of rolls. SO GOOD. I could keep eating it forever! They have a good variety of raw fish and they will cut it for you. Can't wait to go back!!! read more
The good: The thing about Taro's fish is that it is both a restaurant and a fishmarket, that means you can either dine in or have it takeout. They have fresh fish here, but they also have a variety of Japanese food that you can pair up with the sushi. If you are a sashimi lover, then you have to go here. I can't specify which sashimi to go for because their selection varies each time. Pick up the green tea cheesecake (frozen) if you want one of the best tasting desserts ever! The bad: the price can ride up on you fairly quickly. Be cautious of your selection! (Not that it's a bad thing but try to have self control) The ugly: there isn't a lot of places to sit down and eat. So don't expect to have a spot if you order in. Neutral: they have odd opening and closing times so be sure to check before you go here. Better for takeout than dine in. Not good for groups. read more

One of my favourite sushi joint. They no longer have seating area, so it is take away only. For a supermarket looking place, people may be surprised at the cost of the sashimi and sushi, as they are comparable to a sit down restaurant. Don't let that fool you, as they make-to-order beats most other 3 or 4 stars restaurant. Initally when I first tried, I was surprised the fish ordered were given to me at room temperature. It gave me panic thinking if this is normal, as most places serve it still `fresh from the fridge`. After a few more bites, you realize it really brings out the flavours more. No need to worry about anything because it's straight from a source. Not many parking, and this place gets busy. read more
Well now, I was craving for some Toro. So my friend recommended this spot to me. Holy jackpot. This location is a 1.5 hr commute in total ... but well worth the trip. I only got the sashimi starter since Icouldn't eat a slab of Toro all by myself. Or can I? Hmm. Anyhow, the fish (as seen) is super fresh. The staff is friendly. I would not stay there to eat ... just pick up and go. Note that they do provide chopsticks / soya sauce. Also, they offered to pack the fish in ice for me so that it will be still be fresh and cold when I get home. How cool is that (literally)! I will be returning to get more sashimi ... and will most definitely try the cooked food / maki. I just need to not eat prior and invite friends over for a party. This is b/c the the slabs of fish are quite big and I would like to buy several slabs to try. They also have urchin / clams / scallops etc. read more
Came here for a friends bday. We ordered 2 party trays and shared among 8 ppl. Very fresh nigiri and rolls. It was a little pricier than most places but it's mainly a seafood market that happens to serve food as well. Very limited seating because of this but not a big problem. The quality of the fish is amazing. Highly recommended place if u want authentic, fresh, clean sushi/sashimi read more

Definitely an awesome place to buy all sorts of assorted Japanese food goodies. The seafood is super fresh, they've got a variety of oysters ready to be shucked, a table chock full of cooked items, and while it may cost you a pretty penny, it's worth every cent to get top quality stuff! There is a very limited amount of seating space if you cannot bear taking out as well, though as other yelpers have recommended, it would probably be more convenient to do take out. A personal favorite of mine is a unique take on octopus balls offered by Taro's fish. They are approximately three times the size of regular takoyaki and are a much meatier, filling alternative. Yum! I came here expecting Taro's Fish to be a sit-in restaurant, but was surprised to see a grocery store establishment instead. You certainly have the option to dine in (there's a few seats by the counter) but most customers were ordering take-out. They close at 8PM, so I got take-out as it was already 7:30 when I arrived. The menu is not extensive, but instead had very basic items to choose from. We ordered the Family Party Tray $60 and the chefs had it ready within 10-minutes! You pay for everything at the cash, where you'd also pick up your order. The service was not only fast, but very friendly & polite (they are run by actual Japanese people). Not sure if it's because I ordered take-out, but the fish did not taste fresh or up to par with the other Yelp reviews. The hamachi was tough to chew on, the tuna was detached and dry, the salmon was A-OK, and the sushi in the platter was the standard dynamite roll drizzled in mayo. Though I'm disappointed in their sushi, I would still return to grocery shop when in need of imported Japanese goodies! read more
Fresh sashimi. This is a order to go place in a very small Plaza across IKEA. The sushi and sashimi is very fresh. I suggest to pick the ones in the fridge and get the chef to cut it. The premade ones aren't as fresh. The blue fun toro and tuna is very good. But it is a bit on the pricier side. Paid $28.00for a small piece for blue fun toro. Also ordered their torched salmon , that was my favourite. All in all a great place for sushi. I recommend to take to and go to the near by IKEA to sit down and eat. They do provide ice which is a great gesture. read more

This little Japanese market offers very fresh products! The sashimi, sushi, rolls, and oysters are always fresh and delicious. They offer a great variety of seafood. It is mainly for takeout but they do have a few seats available. I have been coming here for years and I am never disappointed with their food. read more
One of my favourite places for affordable and fresh sushi in Toronto. Completely run by Japanese people, they make pre-ordered sushi or sashimi platters and the quality is impeccable. They also sell a bunch of Japanese products, ready to eat sushi, essential Japanese cooking ingredients and Japanese snacks. read more

Known this market for a long time back in J town. This year found it again at this new location. All the seafood from Taro's are always fresh and tasty. Especially like the blue fin toro, not many places offer sashimi grade blue fin toro. Being able to pick, with this quality, it's a much better deal than having it in restaurants. Also love their salmon from different places, can do a salmon tasting around the world. The black cod from Alaska is a must too, I use the nobu recipe to make miso black cod (gindara), it's so delicious! The texture is different than those I got from st Lawrence market, guess the Japanese dishes has to be from a Japanese fish market. Even it's far from my home, it's worth it to drive all the way here to get those sashimi to fill my cravings! read more
Came here a few weeks ago after work with my boyfriend for dinner. This place is near Bayview Village tucked inside a small plaza. Taro's Fish is a small store/supermarket that sells Japanese goods as well as ready to eat foods and fish for sashimi. There's maybe some counter spots to sit and a small table across the window of the shop. My boyfriend and I ordered the sushi for 2 - I think it was around $50.00. The fish is pretty good and fresh. The only thing I didn't like about it was that I thought the fish wasn't cold enough. It was a bit too warm for my liking. Other then that, it was pretty decent - would definitely come again in the near future. read more

This fish market was recommended to me by a Japanese sushi chef friend as a place I can buy good sashimi grade fish. Everything I bought was excellent. The fish is labeled so you can see exactly where it is from. It is mainly a take out place but you can also eat at the small counters inside the store. If you don't care about the ambiance and just want good fresh sushi for a reasonable price, this is the place for you! I go back to Japan every year and am very picky about my sushi. I've dined in and also tonight tried take out sushi, both times the food was excellent. I just wish it was closer so I can o more often! read more

Sometimes I realize that I forget to review places that I go to the most - Taro's Fish included. There are not many places that provide sashimi-grade fish and Taro's Fish has been my family's go-to spot. Being Japanese, my family wants to eat different types of fish other than the typical salmon and tuna that can be easily attained elsewhere. Taro's Fish offers a various assortment and their fish are typically really fresh! My parents cannot bear the AYCE-quality sashimi nor can they justify splurging on an excessively decorated platter with only few slices of cheap cuts. Hence, this place solves it all. They provide simply sashimi that is fresh and reasonable. You can also ask them to cut the fish into slices for you for free of charge! read more

My husband and I come here whenever we are in the area. Fish is very fresh. We love how you can customize your own plate by selecting various fish from the large refrigerators then having them plated to enjoy in the store. Also we have done a name your price and chefs prepare you a dish, you can point out specific fish you like and don't like as well. Jumbo prawns and scallops are our favorites! read more
My absolute favourite fish market in the GTA!!! Huge selection, incredibly fresh, and friendly and fast service! I love how you can choose what you want and customize your own sashimi platter, and they also have pre-made platters for you to get if you don't know what you want! I especially love the uni, jumbo shrimp and scallops here! Suggest coming here early as their good stuff goes fast! A must try!!! read more
