Some friends and I wanted to have a sushi dinner party so I was researching a bit about where to get sushi-grade salmon and tuna. I ended up getting it here at Taro's. It's easy to miss but it's in a small strip plaza across from the Canadian Tire. They have it packaged in their refrigerator, already sliced up in blocks so you can cut them up however you want it. For the die-hard tuna fans, they have three grades of tuna, including toro though you'll have to cough up some good cash for that. All in all, the quality of the fish was excellent and this would be my stop for a sushi party. read more

This place has the highest quality sushi-grade fish I know, along with a decent variety of authentic Japanese grocery products. There are seats to eat at, and the people who work with the fish really know their stuff. I'm usually a little intimidated by the prospect of asking the sushi wizards to make something for me, so I usually get one of their prepared sashimi platters. The largest of those is usually in the $40-$50 range, but features a dizzying array of the freshest fish available. Each piece is a soothing treat to be savoured slowly. Not a place to go if you're famished and just want to stuff your face. It's about quality here, not volume :) read more

You might miss Taro's Fish if you're not looking for it. I hate a great sushi platter here recently (30 pieces for $50, if I remember correctly), and it was enough for 2 people to share (even for someone like me who claims to eat a lot). It contained really yummy cooked rolls, as well as tuna, salmon, blowtorched sushi and a few other options. The selection was great and I really enjoyed my meal. It's best I post a picture to go along with this, so here it is! Will definitely be back :-) read more

Cute little Japanese groceries, raw fish and cooked foods. Price is expensive but they offer rare items like blue fin toro. They will slice it for you as well which is nice. See the pictures I uploaded. Very neat place. Worth a visit!! I'll leave this short since Yelpers have been recommending this place for years. read more

One place you can get the FRESHEST fish in Toronto!!! Very authentic Japanese place with japanese owners and workers. They are a fish whole seller, they distribute fish to other high-end Japanese restaurants, here you can get the same quality. Usually they have piece of fish or sashimi prepared in a container box in the fridge, you choose what you want, bring it to the kitchen and they'll chop it up for ya. Spicy salmon/tuna is absolutely fantastic, Negitoro roll is really good, Chirashi don is a bit of a disappointment as they've been prepared in advance. Sometime they have this blue fin Tuna by the piece and they are fabulous. Very pricey, but not at pricey as you would pay at high-end restaurants. If you really like FRESH stuff, always order it at the kitchen and they'll make it for you. Sushi is extremely over-priced, but each piece comes with a piece of fish you can use to make 3~4 sushi at other places. Highly recommended! 4.5/5 read more

Been coming here for years, place is always clean and food always fresh. Prices are not cheap considering you can also get the same quality of food in a good sushi restaurant, at least you dont have to pay for tips. Went there again today, have ordered sushi trat for two and also bought some sashimi. Took it from their fridge and ask the chef to slice it for us for free. For the price we paid sushi tray for two $60 it comes with a decent quality fish like Otoro, sea bream and sea urchins. I was a bit disappointed that the sea urchin was not that fresh. It was borderline of being too fishy, i think its at least 2 days old. Second they use to give us fresh wasabi and now they use the powdered ones. For the price we pay i guess they should have not cut corners. Will follow up with this review on my next visit and i hope soon too. But for now i am not sure if i really want to go back. read more

This place is for: people who live nearby or need to buy large quantities of sashimi and specialized sushi This place is not for: sushi eaters or anyone who lives farther away. Taro's Fish is a sushi fish market, first and foremost, with fridges full of different sushi fish in whole form, from various origins, in exceptional quality. You can pick the fish from the fridge, and they will prepare it for you as sashimi. They also have a good selection of rolls and sushi they can prepare. The quality of the sushi is great for the value. It's not comparable to the highest end sushi shops as some have waxed lyrical about, but it beats most other sushi places and definitely at its price point. There are some nice touches like how they include a bag of ice to keep your sushi cool for transport. There are issues though: - if ordering sushi or rolls, preparation can take a long time, despite what looks to be 8 people working in the back, and no customers in the front - they use an old, simple point-of-sale cash machine, so your receipt does not show you what you ordered and there is no tracking of what you ordered, thus leading to many mistakes and mixup. I've left the shop with items missing from my bag. In the end, I can't recommend this place unless you live nearby. This is not a destination joint. While the sushi is good quality, I think you can find at least one sushi shop near wherever you live in Toronto, with similar quality, and messing up my order multiple times - which could be solved with a better POS or just a paper checklist system - is unforgiveable. If you do order from Taro Fish, keep this in mind: - give yourself plenty of time, or order ahead for large orders - double check your order before you leave read more

This place is a hidden gem in the small plaza beside Mec on Sheppard. It is a Japanses grocery but they sell fresh fish and can order sushi as well. Only thing is this place is busy with order and they will cut off taking order a few hours before closing depending how busy they are that day. Still can get the sashimi and they will offer to slice it for you so it is ready to eat. Price is not on the cheap side but you buy for what you get the quality of the fish is very high and fresh. Been here 3 times now and I will be back here for sure. read more

Really awesome spot for fresh fish. Definitely a little bit more pricey compare to galleria or hmart. Sashimi grade salmon ranges from $10-25. Scallops and shrimp sashimi is super fresh and delicious. A good place to go to if you feel like splurging and treating yourself. read more

My go to place for salmon sashimi. I get the packs you choose in the fridge and the chef will help you cut into sashimi slices. Their salmon is always delicious and fresh, their wasabi is also very fresh. They're customer service is also on point as they always offer a bag of ice to go with you fish to keep it fresh till you get home. read more

EXPENSIVE!!!!! But oh so worth it. In particular, the unagi is exquisite. The last time I was there was late in the day and they didn't have much of a variety left, but on the two occasions that I have frequented this place, I can only say - keep your standards - don't change anything, Taro! I walked by this place so often, because the plaza that it's in is a small one, and it's store front is fairly unassuming... But at the recommendation of a friend, I walked in to discover what everyone in the area already seemed to know: this is THE place to get the freshest sushi/sashimi in the neighbourhood. I think it's even fair to go so far as to say the best in all of North York! You can order different rolls off their menu, or peek into their fridge for a selection of fresh fish that you can buy by weight for the chefs to slice up... This place also serves as a mini grocery store for select Japanese items: sauces, pre-made food and desserts. It's not cheap, but it's certainly worth the money for the value you're getting! read more

A friend was nice enough to take me here for lunch. Located in a dodgy plaza lies a hidden gem. The layout inside is pretty identical to Jtown's food market. Pick your seafood and grab a seat! I was skeptical at first since it wasn't a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant but I was so wrong. The rolls and sashimi was amazing. Had the soft crab roll with assorted sashimi and uni. Delicious. I guess the only thing missing was some sake lol Portion was not a lot, but that is expected. If you wanna fill up an empty stomach like you would in an ayce sushi place, get ready to pay up lol Would not recommend this place for a larger group than 4. You'll have a tough time finding bar stool and window stool. It is really just a place for you to enjoy some amazing sushi or get some take out and gtfo =) read more

Almost all of my Japanese friends LOVE this place. They have fish, tempura, sushi, rice cracker, Matcha ice cream, pre-made dishes, nattou, some vegetables, seasonings and so on. Most of seasonings are cheaper than other Asian supermarket (e.g. PAT in Korean town, T & T). I haven't try fish there since I'm almost vegetarian now, that is why i put four stars instead of five. But I can tell the quality since I had lived near s fishermen's city called Abashiri in Hokkaido for more than 5 years and the city is one of most famous e areas for fish in Japan. At least, I tried Futomaki sushi for $5.50 and they were really nice. It made me feel like that I'm in Japan for 20 min. read more

Taros has one of the best quality sushi and sashimi in Toronto in my opinion. You can order at the sushi bar or buy sashimi grade fish ( large pieces) for take out. Service is great and everyone is very nice polite and helpful. They have daily fresh sushi, fried soft-shell crab, etc. Taros is a must try and believe me you will not be disappointed. read more

I got the sushi for two party tray and it's the best fish I've ever had! This place is amazing! They also have a large variety of sea food for consumption or for cooking and selections of pre-made chirashi rice. It truly is a gem in the area! read more

this place is freaking amazing, and i love how close it is to my home! Now i dont' usually buy their rolls - on occasion I do and it's always super amazing. But i come here for the fish, because I usually make my own sushi. I'm not gonna put up pictures because it will confuse people since the platters are made by myself, but what I can say is you pay for what you get. Yes their prices for fresh fish is NOT cheap. But their quality is AMAZING. I would say it's as good as some of the restaurants you will get in the city (JaBistro, Miku, etc). So for those who know how to cut fish, or know how to make sushi and want GOOD amazing quality ingredients for your dishes, you definitely need to come here. Their selection always varies, and they always write down the countries where the stock comes from (salmon, tuna, grouper, mackerel, squid, scallop, etc). For those who like the inari or wanna make their own, they also sell the skins here too :) Anyway, great little place, not much for sitting, but if you want take out, or buy your own ingredients to make japanese sushi, definitely THE place. read more

Amazing quality sashimi. This isn't a restaurant, you can eat there if there's space but it's better to take it to go. It's a small fishmonger with some other japanese products. It's too bad it's out of the way or I would go there more often. read more

Sometimes you want to eat quality sashimi, without the restaurant pricetag. Don't get me wrong; don't come in here expecting low prices, but be dazzled by the value of what you purchase! If you're lucky enough to find a seat, have a sitdown and purchase some of the sashimi on display inside the fridge. They'll cut it up for you or prepare it to your specifications. They have a good assortment of other goods including noodles, sauces, packed lunches, and have a made-to-order take-out menu. Quality ingredients and admirable skill makes this Japanese seafood market stand out. read more

Great place to have sushi and sashimi! The fish are fresh and with reasonable price. There are a lot selections and you can just order and they will bring it to you. Great place to pick up sashimis!!! Been here a few times, what I like about this place is they always have higher-end sashimis in stock. Such as different kinds and cuts of Blue Fin Tuna, Japanese Amber Jack, Squids, Octopus, Shrimps.. They have fresh section and also a frozen grade sashimi section. They always offer to cut the sashimis you buy or you can buy pre-made sushi and sashimi platters. Down-side to this place is, they don't have any live seafood and it's a bit pricier then other wholesale places I know of and go to. Therefore 3.5 stars. Go-to place for Taco (octopus), Toro and O'Toro (Blue Fin Tunas). read more

You will expect high quality, fresh sashimi grade fish choices at Taro Fish. With mixed sashimi platter for you to choose from to variety of individually packed sashimi fish like blue fin toro, hamachi, uni, amber jack, kampange, mackerel, scallop, salmon belly. The chef will also slice your choices of sashimi to create your own platter. If you like blue fin toro, this is the place to go, you get the outstanding sashimi grade, with such reasonable price which you will have to pay 3 to 4 times more if eating in a Japanese restaurant. They also have sushi roll and platter available for order, however I find their sushi rice is not up to par in terms of the rice choices, texture and the flavor. If you are looking for a Japanese restaurant to have a romantic dinner, this is not what you'd expect. This place is like a fish market. read more

Our favourite fresh authentic sashimi shop. Not really restaurant per say, more like a grocery store with seating inside. Large selection of sashimi in their fridge. Pick what you like from the fridge, pay at the cashier, one of their sushi chefs will cut it for you, garnish it to make it pretty, and then ..... enjoy. We also always order Futomaki, which is large yummy roll. They are so flexible, you can tell them your budget, they will make you a tray with a little bit of available fish / seafood available at the time. read more

This sushi is absolutely - by far - hands down - the highest quality fish you can find anywhere around. It's like heaven in your mouth. Their sushi and sashimi cannot be beat. It's better as a take out restaurant than an eat-in one -- but they give you an ice bag for take out which is super helpful. Most of the store is set up like a grocery style place. Eat in would be a casual setting with a bar-style type table near the chefs and a couple of smaller tables for smaller parties. The only downside to Taro's is they don't have hot tempura :( Otherwise great staff, hard working. Try it. read more

Fresh sushi though limited variety when I was there. Not the most talented presentation but very tasty. Mainly takeout and fish market, the quality of this place makes it a winner. I tried this place first when they had a dine in area but that's no longer. I regularly order a chirashi and they have a good assortment either pre-made in the fridge or fresh to order. I've ordered their sea urchin and was really good. Have bought their Japanese desserts from the fridge as well as some imported items. Have yet to try the customize your order so hope to soon. Busy on the weekends so plan ahead. read more

Change is bad. Everyone knows it. You know it. I know it. Fish know it, plants know it, your boss lies to you, but he/she knows it too. I was at Taro's today for what is surely the best non high-end restaurant sushi in Canada and they have removed the counters, stools and seats to force people not to eat there. Since everyone knows take-out sushi is as nice and palatable as three-day old cake it seems this will be my last visit to Taro's. I am not sure why they dislike and disdain the customers who took advantage of their seats and counters, because clearly putting bags of rice on the counter and taking away the chairs means you did not really need the space, but made sure you fill it with something else on purpose, but that is a loss to the customer and the business. The sushi menu is still there, but only amateurs or people who live next door (!?!?!) will buy sushi there now. So they have the sushi but want to send it out of the store only. Sorry, cold sushi sitting in the car for an hour is as cool as a SUV or four-door Porsche. Ladies automatically know that stuff. The store is still selling packaged and whole fish, Japanese edibles and garnish of course. For those who do not enjoy standing in line Mr. Taro also now sells Japanese cheesecake and matcha cake too (see they are uptown but they know business and how to make money on the back of a trend), but gone is the ability to order rolls, sushi, sashimi, clams and even tempura and enjoy it there. It is too bad because I always picked up something there whenever I visited. Whether fish, ready-made food, oden (which they don't care any more) or soy sauce I will pick those things up elsewhere as well. See, I told you, change is bad. That is why corporations and hypocrite types always have to repeat the lie that 'change is good' or 'change is for the better' or 'change is needed' etc. If it were true it would not needed constant preaching. As I was getting in the car I noticed that the kabob place two doors down has an amber 'conditional pass' from the city. I clearly won't be eating there either... read more

i knocked off a star for being, in my opinion, overpriced. i also knocked off one more star because if a not so friendly lady there, but added back the star for the the two that were friendly and made an effort to understand and meet my needs. i ordered uni, scallop, spot spawn, salmon, tuna, hamachi and tako wasabi. sashimi was fresh, and they do have a good selection. but again, overpriced. even the pocky was overpriced! they had a (small) pack of seaweed $14.99, what? i dont know what kind of special seaweed that is. if you want a deal, get their pre-packaged assorted sashimi. read more

Taros Fish is an awesome sushi joint the bf and I found through reviews one day and decided to check out. It's not a restaurant per say but it doesn't lack in great service. You can purchase slabs of fresh sashimi and ask to get it sliced on the spot and eat it right there! There's always a great variety of fish from different than regions as well, say Atlantic salmon versus salmon from fish farms. Whenever we are in the area we always make a stop at Taro's. I just wish they were open seven days a week. Keep up the great work! read more
