I used to love to get sushi from Taro sushi when they were located in JTown back in the day where the quality was always great and the prices were reasonable (yup I do sound like a geezer on the porch telling the kids to get off the lawn). Ever since they moved to the current location, I've frequented the location several times through the years and never came away impressed. Prices are much higher and the quality did not increase accordingly. I consider myself to be a pretty picky sushi and sashimi eater and through the years they continue to get rave reviews which I'm doubtful about. But today's visit just about reaffirmed my experience at Taro from recent years. And what's more disappointing today is the questionable integrity of the establishment that I was exposed to. I ordered the chirashi. The look of the fish generally looked tempting. The chirashi had pieces of salmon, snapper, octopus, shrimp, tamago, tuna and some ikura on a bed of basil leaf. The rice was well seasoned with mushroom, ginger and sesame which was the highlight of the whole thing. Everything else went down hill from there. The fish in general was not of super great quality. They lacked the sweetness I'm really expecting from really fresh sashimi. The snapper also had a lot of tendon in them making them hard to chew through. The Saba was equally bad with a strong bitter metallic after taste; similar to ones that you would get at AYCE restaurants. The salmon that was visible from the plastic covering had a good amount of fat in it but once you take off the initial layer, based on the cut and the lack of lines of salmon fat, you can tell that they've tried to squeeze in some odds and ends into the chirashi. I've got the feeling that if you buy the expensive stuff you may get quality however if you are buying just regular stuff Taro really doesn't cut it with the necessary value and quality. The deceitful tactics is also quite appalling. To some degree this is telling me that Taro is not necessarily all about the customers. If you can't do the basics right as a fish/sashimi market, how can I trust it with the higher end stuff? I will not be returning to Taro anytime soon. read more

Fell in love when I walked in! Fresh sashimi grade seafood and a variety of ready made & freshly made sushi/nigiri/roll selection! Mesmerizing to watch chefs slice the fish, and loved looking at all the different types. Downside is that it's extremely expensive, but freshness compensates. Also tried one of their mochi pieces ~ it was soooooo goooooood Overall would recommend checking out. Some quick lunch there would be nice too. No place to sit but lots of grab n gos if you're busy. By subway station, and although you don't take orders between 2-4PM, there are pre-made ones available. Would recommend salmon rolls and chirashi ~ read more

Taro's is Japanese owned fish shop that offers delectable sushi grade fish in addition to various other Japanese edibles. You can buy the fish available at the shop to, and either get then to prep it for you for you to enjoy at the small bar seating they have by the window, or you can take it home to enjoy in your pajamas. I find the items a little on the pricier side compared to other supermarkets but you really can't beat the quality at Taro's when it comes to sushi specific items like saba or amaebi. Actually, you can't really get these items consistently anywhere else (T&T or Diana's Seafood will have them on occasion)! Service is always super friendly. They even gave me complimentary wasabi when I forgot to buy some to take home the last time I was there. I just wished they were open more often! Parking can be found at the small parking lot outside. A warning not to park there if you're going to MEC (they have their own underground parking) as you might get a ticket, according to a security guard that was walking around the premises. read more

I would give the 4 stars but I do find the prices a little too high for what you get. I haven't ordered from their menu but I'm sure the fish is super fresh. I usually go by to grab one of their rolls, bowls or tempura that are pre-packaged for a grab and go lunch. I'll have to order from their menu or have them make me fresh sashimi/sushi dishes one day when I feel like splurging. read more

To give fellow Yelper some background. I am an absolute sushi fanatic. I love sushi day in and day out. I've been to Japan (Osaka and Tokyo) for sushi. Yes sushi in Japan is unbelievable, but this place is absolutely amazing. Heads up, it'd not a restaurant it is a fish market style where you pick your own sashimi and the chef will slice it for you to take home. You pay for the high quality, it's not cheap, it's rare to find this type of quality in Toronto. I highly recommend if you want some high quality sushi and don't mind cutting the bank. read more

Went to Taro for the first time to get fresh sashimi for my sister's birthday. Line was not bad the day I went. Went inside and picked what I wanted . Then bringing to the counter to have them sliced. When I got home and opened the sashimi platter, it was disappointing on how they placed the sashimi, it looked unappetizing. I know spending$185 might not be as much as other customers spent, but still make it more presentable. I did not have a good first experience. Overall, it was fresh but I am sure I can get fresh sashimi esle where. read more

Taro's fish is my go to for a quick take out and quality sushi place. It actually runs by Japanese staff and chef. The fish and seafood are a bit pricy but the quality is much better than the ones you expect in an AYCE or regular sushi restaurant/ take out. The photo is their sushi supreme combo - with 8 pcs of premium sushi by chef's choice. Much aesthetically made and joyfully tasted. Other than this, my go to would be their torched salmon & spicy salmon sushi ( yes! I'm a salmon lover! ) - one of the best sushi take out places in uptown. Be mindful of their open hours, I believe they only open 4 days a week with short hours. Check before you go! Overall I recommend this place if you are looking for authentic Japanese food in uptown and some Japanese snacks!( yes it is indeed a Market) read more

Taro Fish has the best Japanese style sushi I have ever had! The fish is always fresh and tasty, they must a a high turnover of product. I know there are a lot of pepper from the Japanese community who order there party trays from Taro. I think their traditional Futo maki is fabulous. May be pricier than your neighbourhood sushi joint but well worth it! read more

Love their sushi and sashimi! Fresh with a slight tingle of sweetness. We have tried their fridged sashimi and chirashi-which are great, but, now we order the party tray for two (made to order) and it's the perfect size for lunch. It comes with an assortment of sushi and some maki rolls. Sometimes, if we feel more adventurous, we will splurge on a bluefin tuna sashimi-melt in your mouth goodness. It's a little bit out of the way, but it's worth it! read more

I heard so many good things about this place for a long time and their great reviews are through the roof. I pre-ordered Sushi for two($70+tax) 3 days ago to make sure I get my order in on time. The sushi was ready exactly the time indicated on the confirmation. My father and I had not eaten Sushi so good since JaBistro. Love this place! The only place I know to get good quality sashimi and has such variety to choose from! The blue fin toro is very good, melt in your mouth, different levels of fatty to pick from. Salmon was fresh, organic available. Scallops were my favourite. If you don't want a whole pack of fish, check the counter for odds and ends to weigh. This is it, folks. I am no longer going out for my sushi/sashimi unless I absolutely have to. I finally made it in to Taro's fish and this place is fish heaven~~ I could hear the angels singing and cherubs flying about as I gazed into the glorious fridge embracing the bounty of the sea from all over the globe. We decided on beautiful Botan ebi (6 pcs), maguro, Hokkaido scallops (7 pcs), sea bream, surf clams (7 pcs), Yellowtail done negitoro style (not sure what it's called) and pre-packaged tako-wasabi. Also purchased some ginger, Japanese ice cream and some dessert items to enjoy while we were waiting for them to slice and plate our fish selection. I must say, the store really is pristine. And I particularly appreciated the fact that they had a clean washroom for patrons. Everyone was extremely courteous and even packed a bag of ice to accompany our sashimi platter home. The bill came to $113 and for the quality and quantity of fish (3 grown ups ate till fully sated), Taro's is the real deal. I will definitely be back to sink my teeth into the Aji and the ocean trout the next time! Oh boy, oh boy, I can hardly wait.... read more

I have to say that I am QUITE disappointed with my experience at Taro's. There are things I admit were my own mistakes like: 1) not ordering expensive items 2) trying a huge platter that consisted mainly of maki (rolls) To begin with, I have recently come back from a life long memorable experience of the best Omakase sushi experience Japan had to offer and my palate has been spoiled because of it. Now, I am in no means comparing Taro's to the quality expected out of top tier Omakase dining, but I had some high hopes based on Yelps reviews. Boy was I ever in for a shocker. Ordered: FAMILY PARTY TRAY: $75 for 40pieces and an order of chutoro sashimi ~$25. The party tray... Best part of it was the maki...and that's never a good sign. The tuna, salmon shrimp were at best MEDIUM quality at AYCE restaurants, and the salmon in particular was confused as to wanting to be squid texture..everything in this platter tasted AYCE quality...and not even from the best AYCE places.. Chutoro... *sigh*....it was sour, it was fishy...quality sashimi will have a note of natural sweetness and umami but this was firing sirens of "may have gone bad!" For $120 I could have paid close to full entry towards omakase at Yasu, paid for 3-4ppl at AYCE or ordered even satisfactory sushi for 8 ppl elsewhere.. I could have given 1-2stars here but here's hoping the sashimi reviews really mean something because in my opinion, CONSISTENCY needs to be present in all the food produced in order to be a great place, and not just the premium cuts. The platters should have more attention given as not everyone want just sashimi. Watch any accurate Japanese sushi documentary and they'll say how important the rice is when talking about good sushi. I'd say only 50% of attention is given towards making great sushi here so a 50% rating is well deserved unfortunately. read more

In my opinion Taro Fish offers some of the best sashimi in Toronto. It is streets ahead of the all you can eat sushi shops. Prices are reasonable and the fish is always of the best grade. (There are of admittedly some omakase restaurants that serve high quality meals but prices and availability is not always easily accessible. They should be set aside to celebrate special occasions). Taro Fish offers a choice which is more balanced approach to everyday dining read more

A great little Japanese supermarket that focuses on selling seafood. There are fridges of both sushi and non-sushi grade fish - You pick what you want and you can have them cut and prepare it for your as a completed platter. Prices are OK, especially for their Uni and Hokkaido Scallops, which are my favs. If you don't want to pick your own fish, they also sell sushi platters (their choice) as well. read more

Note: this review is not related to the quality of their products (their freshness is undisputed) but rather a buyer beware. When ordering the spot prawns, ensure that they give you the same number of prawns that they weigh. Had a situation where I ordered 4 spot prawns and witnessed the worker bag and weigh 5 prawns. He peeled the shrimp and packaged 4 shrimp with a price tag for the 5 prawns instead of 4. If he had gives us 5 prawns and charged us for 5, it would have been no issue nonetheless. read more

Was very excited to try this place out. Purchased the Sushi for Two, Chirasi, and BC Uni. When I opened the "fresh" BC Uni, I discovered that it had gone bad. It smelled so bad I lost my appetite for the whole meal. I asked for a refund for the uni and they refused to refund me, which is messed up since uni costs a fortune and we splurged on this. Seems like this is a common occurrence here. There are many 1 star reviews on other sites that talk about rotten sashimi for take-out at this restaurant. read more

I thought this place is more like whole sale priced fish store. But I was wrong..or maybe they changed their concept.. Everything was expensive considering portion and quality. You can get same or better quality product cheaper at Gallaria supermarket or H mart as well. I think gallaria market's seafood part has more good variety and quality of fish for cheaper price. Everything was way too pricey than I expected and pre made sushi was really poor decorated. They also have menu for made to order as well but 8pcs sushi and 6 pcs roll was 25+tax which is not worth the cost and wait. There is no where to eat also it doesnt come with miso soup or salad .. Just going to high-end sushi restaurant seems to be better option for me. Anyways It was different what I heard about this place a few yeas ago. I think they changed their store concept for pricey way. read more

Ordered the following: Rolls Spicy tuna, Regular tuna Sashimi Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna, Scallops, Surf clam, Tobiko Side order Green tea cheesecake All the sushi and sashimi costed $170 and cheesecake was $22. Fed 6 people. We had enough cheesecake for the next day. Taro offers outstanding quality of fresh imported fish at a reasonable cost. Taro never disappoints throughout the years. I started coming to this location five years ago and the quality and service remains the same. This little take out store allows you to choose your own fish and the chefs there will help you slice them and put it in a tray. They will also offer ice if you have a long way home. You can also order a variety of rolls which are just as good as their sashimi. The service is quick and there are a lot of options. Parking isn't great but you can park down the street. They also removed the bar stools which used to seat 3 people so now it's only takeout. I highly recommend coming here if you enjoy high quality fish and want to enjoy it with a large group! Looking for a place to grab some fresh sashimi? Taro's Fish is an excellent place just for that. They have a decent selection of fish and sushi. The owners of Taro's Fish goes back to Japan to hand pick their fishes ever so often. Shipments are received on a regular basis to ensure the fish's freshness. Once you've selected your fish, you can also have the chefs prepare it for you. Their price point is extremely reasonably priced. Wondering what to buy? My favourites are hotate (scallops), botan ebi (shrimp), hamachi (yellowtail), blue fin toro (tuna), uni (sea urchin), and geoduck. Now, do keep in mind that they do not always have everything in stock, either because of the season or they may simply be sold out. Another key take away is that, parking can be a little difficult here. The parking lot is a tighter space and with minimal spaces but, definitely, worth waiting for a parking spot. read more

Great little Shop + Fish Market + Take-Out Sushi/Sashimi spot. Everything was packaged and displayed very neatly. There's Cooked Items, Oysters, Sashimi/Sushi, Whole FISH, Grocery, Drinks, Frozen Items, Prepped Seafood, etc... Asked Jennifer K. if this Fish Market smelled like Fish, she said NO. There is counter stool(5) seating facing the outside window with wooden chopsticks and condiments available for dining-in but I noticed there's more seats stacked in the corner in case of EMERGENCY. While all(3+) Sushi Chefs were busy prepping miscellaneous meals as we snuck in our order. Medium Toro Nigiri(2/$8.00) because Otoro wasn't available but it was still very much MELT in your mouth. Toro completely overwraps the Rice. Jen K. noted there was leftover liquid on the plate from the Fish which is less of an appeal. Scallop Nigiri(2/$5.00) was just as BIG a piece, buttery soft and fresh flavour. Anago Nirigi(2/$5.00) was nicely GRILLED over the Salamander and then sauced slightly. Savoury and yummy. I don't comment on the Rice much as a Noodle person, but this Rice was DELICIOUS and the amount of Wasabi added by the Chef was perfect. read more

Still got it. Taro fish had been the perennial favourite for sashimi and some sushi items from way back when they were located inside J Town. This includes one of the memorable sushi sashimi dinner we had years ago. The sashimi we got here was exceptional (heck it's all about making a memory isn't it :) and the folks who were present still rave about it. They are a bit pricey for sashimi, I would say somewhere between low priced sushi joint and a high end store. The quality of this purveyor will put most places to shame though. I am talking about melt in your mouth tuna, glistening squid, fresh from the sea uni etc. So for a planned sushi/sashimi dinner at my place when people started to ponder where to buy stuff I said let the experts handle the sashimi, we can decide on sushi spots later. This required me to spend over an hour on the trek up but the results were worth it. After just having a few slices of sashimi I have made a few new converts (or join the cult :) folks highest recommendations here for sashimi. I can't think of a better place in gta that can measure up to the value proposition offered here for sashimi. read more

8.25/10 for the overall quality (9/10 for sashimi, 7/10 for cooked food and rolls), 8.25/10 for the services, 8.25/10 for the value. 8.25/10 overall. I live in the area, and I come here quite often when I just want some take out sushi/sashimi. Quality: In terms of quality, they can be some of the best, but there has been some misses. For example, I've had a sushi set that had some stringy salmon pieces that came from some low quality cuts (I remember one of them may have came from the tail, as opposed to the better cuts from the top loin or the belly). However, in most cases, the quality is above average. From time to time, you will see the fattiest Blue fin tuna belly sold here (see picture, but Yelp's reduction of picture quality doesn't do the pic justice) for 40-60 dollars per 100g. I've never bought it before (one entire piece came to about 80 dollars). The best bet, I believe, is to choose your cut. You can see the refrigerator and choose the cut you want. Recently, I've been purchasing mainly the salmon belly and the yellowtail belly for the fattiest, melt-in-your-mouth sashimi. Value: In terms of value, it can also be either way. For example, Uni (sea urchin) sold in the little plastic sections is 5 dollars a section, and the least you can buy is 2 sections. This is cheaper than most restaurants, which is good. For the monk fish liver here, you can get a big roll of the liver for about 7 dollars/100g, where one liver comes to about 8-12 dollars. At Aoyama, you get 2 small sections (which is about 1/4 of a liver or so) for 8.50, I believe. Again, this is a good thing. However, other food don't have as great value. For example, they have pre-fried shrimp tempura, fried soft shell crab, grilled yellowtail, etc wrapped and sold as takeout. I'm not sure I understand how they can sell cold, soggy food items at the same or higher price than restaurants outside when the restaurants will give it to you fresh off the fryer. You will also find a variety of Japanese products here, like calpis drinks, itoen green teas, kirin afternoon milk tea, and mochi ice cream here, but often at a premium price. Often you will find the same item elsewhere (T&T, J-town, etc) for just a tiny bit cheaper. Service: Not too much to say here. After you choose your sashimi fillet, they will slice it into piece for you. Also they will give you a bag of ice (like they do in J-town). I've been told they also shuck the oysters for you when you eat at the restaurant. So that's pretty decent. Also if you call ahead to let them know what kind of fish you want and what budget, they can create a custom sashimi platter for you that's often better value than the premade sashimi platters that they have. (I used to kinda know a guy who works there, and I ordered from him. I don't know if he had any "pull" to make the sashimi platter a better deal than normal or not, but anyway...) Overall: Great place to get sashimi/sushi takeout, but sometimes has its misses. I think the quality is not as impeccable as when it first opened, but still definitely much better than most places (it destroys any takeout sushi T&T and Galleria can offer in terms of quality and variety, but of course T&T and Galleria are cheaper). read more

Wow, I've driven by this place way too many times to count, and never would've thought to stop at this little strip plaza for some high-quality sushi-grade fish. There's a fridge on the side filled with pieces of fresh assorted sashimi that you can ask to be cut into slices if you wish. In the middle is a fridge with frozen Japanese food and also pre-packaged rolls, chirashi bowls, etc that you can just take and go - perfect if you're in a rush. There's also an a-la-carte menu you can order from, for more roll and sushi options. The Torched Salmon Roll was amazing! The blow-torched salmon and avocado on top pretty much melted in my mouth. As for sashimi, we got salmon, blue fin toro, and uni, which all tasted extremely fresh. To top it all off, if you want dessert after your meal, you can always hop across the street to IKEA for some $1 frozen yogurt. :) Although restaurants like Miku, Jabistro, and Zen may still be my favourite for high quality fish, this place is the best you can get considering the price. Holy shiznits this place is the real deal. Its clearly not the cheapest option out there, but the fish here is amazingly fresh and well worth the extra dollars spent. I will admit that when we entered the place, we were completely overwhelmed. It is not a restaurant - it's more of a shopfront, so we kind of just stood around gawking for ten minutes before we knew what to do. We finally figured it out (not before asking the gentleman behind the register on what to do), and picked out some fish from the freezer for the chefs to slice up for us. We picked up two slabs of salmon (one from Scotland and one from Iceland), half a mackerel, and two fat pieces of uni. Plus a cali roll (my favourite), and a wakame salad, the total came out to just over $50. You can choose atlantic salmon for a cheaper price, but we wanted to try something else. You pick your fish, you pay at the register, and you can bring it to the chefs to cut up for you, or you can take it home to cut it up yourself if you want. There are about 10 seats in the store - all bar fronts. This place is fantastic. Like, I would come back here every weekend if I had the dollars. I'm still dreaming of the fish now. If you're looking for something different - this is where you should go. Right off of Bessarian station, and there's a small parking lot that seems to fill up quickly. read more

This is my second time here. It's in a small strip plaza across from Canadian tire at Sheppard and Leslie. The first time I came, I just walked around and looked at everything they offered. After reading all the reviews from yelpers, I wanted to try their assorted sashimi. Went there around 7pm, and good thing they still had assorted sashimi in the fridge. There were 2 selections. A small for 31.00 and larger one for 43.00. Since it was just my bf and I, decided to grab the small sashimi with a salmon skin roll. There was a sushi chef there making sushi to order, however seeing how he put time making each piece, we were hungry and just grabbed things available from the fridge. There were about 28 pieces of sashimi, which is about a dollar a piece! Complete steal considering they gave some premium sashimi!! The quality was very good and fresh, and variety offered kept my tummy grinning. I noticed the larger sashimi had uni. I'm sure there's even more variety! The salmon skin roll was pretty good, would probably taste better fresh and crispy. Overall, definitely a great place to come and have some fresh sashimi/sushi at a reasonable price!! read more
