My wife and I came here about a month ago after going to a football game. We were just craving some Indian food and Tarka just happened to be nearby. I haven't had any problems with the Tarka restaurants in Austin, but they never seem to make it spicy enough even though I ask it to be. This time however, I was very pleasantly surprised. Authentic and Incredible Indian Flavor ~ Last weekend, after church, the babe and I made our usual stop at Trader Joe's, but with 1604 traffic surprisingly light, we decided to check off a spot from our Foodie List and wandered over to Tarka Indian Kitchen for lunch. The moment we stepped through the doors, a warm wave of spices hit us, possibly some cumin, curry and turmeric that were a beautiful welcome to this hungry family. The restaurant had well spaced tables, with a modern look and the space was quiet, but behind the counter, the kitchen team moved in a cohesive manner. We placed our order quickly: crispy samosas, the seasonal wing appetizer, and two entrees Coconut Shrimp and Chicken Tikka Masala (medium heat, just the way I like it). The cashier was friendly and patient, giving us just enough guidance without making us feel rushed. Our samosas arrived within minutes, piping hot and golden brown, with just the right amount of crunch. Before we could finish them, the rest of our meal followed. The bowls were still steaming, and each bite had a deep flavor and rich texture. The Coconut Shrimp was perfect, sweet, savory, with a slight heat and the Chicken Tikka Masala was just as just spicy enough to warm the belly, without being overwhelming. Our portions were generous, and we had enough left over to box up for later. You could spend more on Indian food elsewhere... but you'd be missing out. Tarka is a gem in San Antonio, fast, flavorful, and satisfying without feeling heavy. A casual meal that didn't feel rushed, with food that tasted like it was made with love. Highly recommended. I've been going here for years. I only get the lamb kabobs, it's been my order for as long as I've known the restaurant existed. Tarka used to give me whole sliced lamb on a skewer stick on top a bed of rice with a variety of greens. After a while they removed the skewer sticks, I don't mind this change because the taste of the food is still the same, only they took away the skewer. At this point it shouldn't be called lamb kabobs, it is now lamb bites. I ordered it today and I got something I've never seen before, it was ground lamb discs, it looked like ground lamb burgers that break apart on top of rice. The flavor and texture was absolutely not there. Please change the lamb kabobs recipe back to what it used to be, and I'll edit my order. Why does the lamb kabobs get changed up so much when it is arguably the best item on the menu. I am severely disappointed and will never go back to eat here again until it changes. read more

I got the chicken tika masala, a kids meal with the chicken pakora, fries, and a mango lemonade, naan and an appetizer of the chicken pakora. Overall the food was a bit, and I'll definitely return. While tasty, the mango lemonade was on the sweet side, but my son still slurped it down. The chicken tika masala was served with a hefty portion of rice and even at a medium, the spice was pretty potent. If you are spice averse, definitely stick with the mild. Almost a fast food Indian place but nothing in here is fast food taste. The lamb and chicken masala are so flavorful and delicious.

This was my first experience trying Indian food and I had zero idea what to expect The lamb tikka masala had sooo much flavor. Even after being full I wanted more lol. I even ate my leftovers which tasted just as fresh the next day. The garlic naan was perfect to dip in the tikka masala. I did assume this was a sit down restaurant but it's more of fast food. I wasn't greeted when I approached to order. I wanted to use my birthday reward, buy 1 get 1 free, so I ordered the paneer biryani (mild) , aloo gobi (medium) and an order of vegetable samosas. The samosas, filled with potatoes and peas, are my favorite appetizer. I went to the counter to request 2 small plates so we could eat our appetizer. When our entrees were served, I had to go to the counter to request utensils since they forgot to bring the forks wrapped in napkins with our entrees. The aloo gobi was disappointing. I would give it a 2. The cauliflower was mushy and there wasn't much spice even though I ordered it at medium level. It just tasted salty. Biryani had a nice flavor with chunks of paneer, highly recommend. I would encourage the staff to clear the tables more often. I spotted 5 tables with dirty dishes. It wasn't busy so there was no excuse for the tables to not be cleaned. Finally, 2 staff members came to clear the tables. That said, I always go for their chicken curry with medium spice and jalapeños--it's my go-to. The warmth and spiciness hit just right, especially on a cold or rainy day. If you're into gentrified Indian food then this is your spot. I got extra hot and it wasn't even spicy. The flavors really lack in ways this could never taste like authentic Indian food. The garlic nan was sad and soggy with lack of flavor. The tikka masala just tastes like an average tomato soup with weak spices. I finally got to try this place. My husband and son have been to another location many times. The food is plentiful and very well seasoned. I got the Chicken Biryani which was so good! They have a large menu with plenty of meat and vegetarian options, as well as some great appetizers and drink options. The amount of food you get for the price is very reasonable and if you join their rewards program, they often send coupons. The food is consistently good (highly recommend chicken tikka curry, chicken korma curry, garlic naan, mango lassi to drink, vegetable samosas, vegetable pakoras, chicken biryani) but all of their food rocks. Their customer service is ALWAYS kind, polite, upbeat, and seems to be happy to work there. The inside is chill, cozy and warm, although I always order to-go. I'd say for Indian food, their taste pallets lean more toward Americanized Indian versus truly traditional Indian; the plates are Indian food but the taste is more mild overall than the way Indian food has more spices. Walking in, the smell of spices was amazing! I've driven by lots of times and thought it was more of a sit down and order place. But actually, you order then sit and they bring it out to you. The service was both friendly and quick. The lamb kabob salad wasn't the best. The lamb was a little tough and lacked flavor and there was mostly greens with little of the other ingredients. I opted for the yogurt based dressing on the side instead of the agave tamarind it comes with. The kids tikka masala bowl with veggies was better though and had a slightly sweet taste to the sauce. My wife and I eat here at least once a month. We always order the Korma with Paneer; the pistachio cream sauce is excellent. The Malai Kofta with dumplings is also another great dish, enough food to fill you up but not make you feel bloated. This time we tried the new Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza. It was really good! The flavor was a good change from the typical pizzas and the thin crust was cooked just right. The pizza came with a few sauces (not sure what they are) but both were great for dipping the crust or to add to the pizza. I've never quite experienced Indian food at this capacity before! All the speed and convenience of a fast food chain with all the comfort of a nice restaurant. Everything was served quickly and was hot and delicious. All we talked about through the whole meal was how tasty everything was! Almost as if it was our first time trying Indian food. Even the drink fountain choices seemed to all be made in house? I really appreciate the self service station, with takeout boxes at the ready and reusable silver ware! We've been coming here a long time now, and it's still consistently delicious! "Consistent" is key here. There are other Indian restaurants that might be more "authentic" but we have yet to find one that is consistently delicious. One time it's great, another time the same dish is "meh" and you regret wasting your money and appetite there. Not true with Tarka- the same delicious flavor time after time. Sure, the naan could be a little better, but the main dish is so flavorful that it's perfect for dipping the naan and making up for any minor naan imperfections. Service can sometimes be a little better. Last night we walked in and everyone, about 4 people, had their backs to the customer side- just talking and laughing away, not turning around or acknowledging us. Once someone did, it was all good. I'm not a fan of the suggested tipping on the machine at the time of payment. If you're dining in, I'm not really sure what you're tipping. The only thing they do for you during your meal is bring the food to you in the brightly colored dining room. You serve your own drinks, grab your own cutlery, your straws, cup lids, etc. so just keep that one mind. The dining room is basic, too- just a series of tables and chairs with a few booths on the side. If you're going there for the flavorful and delicious food, nothing else even matters. read more

I always smell garlic when I shop at Trader Joe's next to Tarka. This time I decided to give them a try for lunch. I got my order to go, but should have dines in.
