Venturing Out and About ~Indian Baby

Authentic and Incredible Indian Flavor ~ Last weekend, after church, the babe and I made our usual stop at Trader Joe's, but with 1604 traffic surprisingly light, we decided to check off a spot from our Foodie List and wandered over to Tarka Indian Kitchen for lunch. The moment we stepped through the doors, a warm wave of spices hit us, possibly some cumin, curry and turmeric that were a beautiful welcome to this hungry family. The restaurant had well spaced tables, with a modern look and the space was quiet, but behind the counter, the kitchen team moved in a cohesive manner. We placed our order quickly: crispy samosas, the seasonal wing appetizer, and two entrees Coconut Shrimp and Chicken Tikka Masala (medium heat, just the way I like it). The cashier was friendly and patient, giving us just enough guidance without making us feel rushed. Our samosas arrived within minutes, piping hot and golden brown, with just the right amount of crunch. Before we could finish them, the rest of our meal followed. The bowls were still steaming, and each bite had a deep flavor and rich texture. The Coconut Shrimp was perfect, sweet, savory, with a slight heat and the Chicken Tikka Masala was just as just spicy enough to warm the belly, without being overwhelming. Our portions were generous, and we had enough left over to box up for later. You could spend more on Indian food elsewhere... but you'd be missing out. Tarka is a gem in San Antonio, fast, flavorful, and satisfying without feeling heavy. A casual meal that didn't feel rushed, with food that tasted like it was made with love. Highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.

I've been craving Indian food so I placed an order to go using the app. If you sign up for the rewards, you get a free appetizer with any adult entree purchase that will apply on the app once you proceed to payment. I got the chicken tika masala, a kids meal with the chicken pakora, fries, and a mango lemonade, naan and an appetizer of the chicken pakora. Overall the food was a bit, and I'll definitely return. While tasty, the mango lemonade was on the sweet side, but my son still slurped it down. The chicken tika masala was served with a hefty portion of rice and even at a medium, the spice was pretty potent. If you are spice averse, definitely stick with the mild. The food was ready to go as soon as we arrived and was warm even after our 15 minute drive home. Great spot to try!

This was my first experience trying Indian food and I had zero idea what to expect The lamb tikka masala had sooo much flavor. Even after being full I wanted more lol. I even ate my leftovers which tasted just as fresh the next day. The garlic naan was perfect to dip in the tikka masala. I did assume this was a sit down restaurant but it's more of fast food. Regardless I'll be back because I've been craving it since I left.

Samosas and a lassi. Perfect snack.

This place is still so good. Always busy. Great food. I just wanted a snack so stopped in for a mango lassi and some samosas.

This is our go-to easy, fast, and delicious Indian spot in San Antonio! I really like that you can pick the sauce and then add whatever protein you want. It feels more like a fast food spot than a restaurant. It was really busy but they serve you pretty fast. It's located next to Trader Joe's so parking can be a little hard to find during peek hours.

I've stopped by several times whenever I'm in the mood for this type of cuisine, which isn't all that often. That said, I always go for their chicken curry with medium spice and jalapeños--it's my go-to. The warmth and spiciness hit just right, especially on a cold or rainy day. The staff has always treated me well, and the service is consistently great.

Tarka offers approachable and tasty Indian cuisine in a fast casual environment. I love that the menu is simple and makes it easy to pick a dish to order. What I ordered: Masala Fries - Fries are okay but need more seasoning. Not super exciting. Lamb Korma - The lamb is very tender and the korma tastes extremely creamy. The korma is on the grainy/chunky side and comes with rice. Chicken Tikka Masala - Great spices and flavor! The chicken is also very tender and its a big portion! Comes with rice. Garlic Naan - Classic and tasty. The bread is definitely on the thicker side. Mango Lassi - Yum!! This thick mango yogurt drink is so delicious! A must order! Mango Lemonade - If you aren't in the mood for a lassi, this is a good option! It's sour and sweet with a strong mango flavor. I think Tarka is a great place for those newer to Indian cuisine. It is not completely authentic when it comes to the amount of spices used but still a good spot to try out some widely recognized Indian dishes.

If you're into gentrified Indian food then this is your spot. I got extra hot and it wasn't even spicy. The flavors really lack in ways this could never taste like authentic Indian food. The garlic nan was sad and soggy with lack of flavor. The tikka masala just tastes like an average tomato soup with weak spices. Idk what this is but I prefer my Indian food to have soul and flavor.

A fast casual Indian spot. As soon as you enter you can smell all the spices.Just about everything on the menu is great. Our favorites are the tikka masala and sagwala. The warmth from the spices in the sauces are so comforting. All curry dishes are served with rice. Don't forget to order the garlic nan to soak up the sauce. They have a lot of vegetarian options. The mango lemonade is a huge hit but I water my down a little as it's pretty concentrated.

I finally got to try this place. My husband and son have been to another location many times. The food is plentiful and very well seasoned. I got the Chicken Biryani which was so good! I got the mild version but it did have a tiny bit of a kick to it. My friends all lived their dishes too!! I have to say I am not impressed with their naan. Actually disappointed with it. But that won't stop me from going again! I can't wait to try the other dishes.

Service is always great here and meals are fairly affordable for quick service Indian cuisine! Always love the atmosphere, whether for family meal, business lunch, or takeaway. Just a pop by today for me The Lassi is much like a smoothie, ordered today was mango made with the optional coconut milk instead of the yogurt! Delicious and refreshing! Veggie samosa is good as a light vegetarian meal on its own.

Tarka is my go to Indian food spot in town! Service is always quick and the flavor is always spot on. They have a large menu with plenty of meat and vegetarian options, as well as some great appetizers and drink options. The amount of food you get for the price is very reasonable and if you join their rewards program, they often send coupons. My go to order is the vegetable pakoras as an appetizer, malai kofta for a meal, and garlic naan on the side. They hands down have the best Chai in San Antonio! I always order it iced and wish it came in a size larger because I always drink it so quick! Highly recommend checking out Tarka!

At first it did take me a moment to find the place as the building itself doesn't say the restaurant name (written on a chalk board) but thankfully found it and came at a time when it wasnt crowded. Inside definitely doesn't give restaurant vibes. It gives more of a home vibe and has alot of board games and crayons/paints you can do. Also they have a game console in the back which is pretty cool if you like playing Mario cart. It did seem a bit dark inside as not much lights were on but once sun came out was able to see. The guy that took our order was very nice and helped us understand some of the items on the menu. He even gave us a discount for being first time customers which I appreciated. It take take some time to get our food but when we did it was all fresh and hot. We had ordered a few tacos. My brother had the phish tacos and they were actually pretty good. It almost tasted like real fish and definitely would consider getting the next time I visit. They also have us some salsa which was also delicious and tasted great with all our tacos. I did like the potato and egg I had too. It did throw me off when I tasted it with corn tortilla but it was still good. I prefer potato and egg over the bean and cheese but that's just my preference. I did order the pozole soup with jack fruit and tasted pretty good. It looked really pretty and alot of good stuff in the soup. I do feel it needed some more lime or something else but it was good regardless. Overall it was a better experience than I expected and my family even said they would consider coming back here. Can be pricy depending what you order but worth a try at least once. Another good vegan restaurant.

The food feels like the chefs were given good quality materials, but had no idea what to do with them. We ordered a funghi pizza to share then a cinghiale, a costine (short ribs), and a dentice (bass). Funghi pizza was the only dish that made coming worth it at all. It had a nice flavor, but if you're expecting the notes of an earthy mushroom flavor, don't. It's just a nicer version of a standard cheese pizza topped with some onions and mushroom. The cinghiale was just stunningly mediocre. The meat was flavorful, but the pasta itself was shockingly bland. It was just so... ok. The dentice was the best of the 3 individual dishes, but it is just what you would expect some average short ribs with random sauce to taste. The costine was just terrible. Salty on the outside, yet flavorless on the inside. Avoid at all costs. The service was passable, but they clearly overwork their servers as one server just handles an entire section and is too overwhelmed to be timely. I came to cheer myself up, but honestly it only made dinner comically worse. I seriously can't imagine what would cause someone to rate this as 5 stars. Maybe if they thought Olive Garden was 4.5, then I guess this would barely be a 5 in comparison? Either way, if you're looking for good food for your dinner, keep looking. You won't find it here.

Every dish feels thoughtfully curated with tried-and-true recipes rooted in Chef Luca and his family's Northern Italian traditions. This is the kind of place where quality takes priority over quantity. Our server, Gary, was fantastic. He was friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and passionate about Italian food and wine. His recommendations were spot-on and his enthusiasm felt so genuine. We started with a bread basket accompanied by a little sampling of tapenade, which was savory, briny, and a perfect complement to the warm bread. Came in with a group of four, we kicked things off with the burrata starter--a surprisingly fun and shareable adventure of baked burrata, fresh crostini, roasted cauliflower, asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, and basil cream. There was a lot happening on the plate, but it all worked beautifully together. For our entrées, we ordered the Tartufo, Cinghiale, Bolognese, and Carbonara. And let me just say, the Tartufo was a full-on dinner performance. Gary brought out steaming hot tagliatelle pasta and tossed it tableside inside a giant wheel of Parmesan. He then topped it with crab meat in brown butter before finishing it with a generous shaving of truffle. Every bite was like a perfectly timed symphony of flavors--rich, savory, buttery, and earthy, with nothing outshining the other. I'd put this dish up against anyone's nonna. I sampled the other three entrées as well, and every one was delicious. The gnocchi in the Cinghiale is an absolute must-try--pillowy, texturally delightful, and packed with flavor. Thank you, Nonna Osteria, for such an epic culinary experience. And a special shoutout to Gary for guiding us through the menu and making an already great dinner even better.
