I had a generally fine experience with Dr. Jay Shih Optometry during my exam. Dr. Shih is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain each step of the exam process, which I appreciated. However, my experience took a turn when he encouraged me to try a new contact lens with multifocal lenses. I gave it a shot but ultimately didn't like them. I'm a busy person, so I didn't call back for about 47 days to order my original contact lenses. When I finally did, I was informed there would be a $25 fee to change the prescription since I hadn't called within 45 days. To be honest, I was never told there was a time frame to avoid this fee, and I had assumed this was just a brand change, not a prescription change. I explained this to the office, asking if they could waive the fee just this once, but they insisted it was written on the receipt, and I'd need to speak with Dr. Shih in person. I went in to discuss the situation, and Dr. Shih refused to waive the fee. He mentioned that I shouldn't have procrastinated, which I found a bit dismissive. While $25 isn't a huge amount, I was disappointed with the lack of flexibility, follow-up to see how the new lenses were fitting, and poor communication overall. There wasn't any effort made to contact me about how the trial lenses were working out, and the customer service felt lacking. I won't be returning. It's unfortunate because I thought the exam itself was fine, but the poor follow-up and customer service have left a bad taste. Dr S. Is not professional. I went to him for new glasses and my two eyes are not the same, and he got me glasses that have the same lenses. When I drive I see glare on my right eye and my left eye is clear, that is the reason I went to him, and the new glasses does the same thing, my left eye I see blur up close. So I went back a week later, and he's telling me to bring my old glasses so he could see them. I told him you're supposed to be professional and should be able to help get the right lenses for me. My old glasses one of the lenses were thicker. I don't know where the old glasses are. He's not professional at all. Plus he does the eye exam so fast. Never will I go back to this place. read more

I have gone to this doctor for several years. Decided I needed a new exam because I have to renew my drivers license soon and didn't want there to be any problems with my eyes (had one before). The new prescription was very different from the previous one which surprised me as I wasn't really having any problems with the old one. But I thought he is the doctor and knows what he is doing. I ordered new glasses and big problems. I am using the old glasses until I can go to another doctor and get a new prescription. Won't go back to Target Optical again. read more

The doctor has poor manners and was rude to my daughter and treated us as if we were slow. (We have college degrees). Acts as if he is above everyone because he is an independent contractor. I had to reschedule my appointments due to chronic illness, then preceded to refuse to allow me to make appt even though there was availability at the time and day my family needed. Then over time I have seen him blame his staff for his mistakes. This doctor just has poor character. I'm thankful I have other places to go and no longer waste my time not money here. Worst experience ever. It's been months now and I still can't use my glasses. It was like talking to someone in used car sales. Upsale upsale. Glasses never worked properly. I went back to the store 4 times plus 3 times that they left early after telling me to come in at a certain time. I was told by customer service that the optometrist doesn't do rechecks. What!! They also have a sense of style that is similar to mine and really help narrow down which glasses look good on your face. Just left Target optical. Highly irritated. I called last week to reorder contacts. They told me I needed to come in for an exam. I asked them to check my insurance as I get a free exam every year. They call me back and say I'm eligible. After the appt Dr. Shih charges me a $10 copay (fine) and an $85 contact fitting fee! By the way they are sorry their employee forgot to mention that on the phone... and if I didn't like it i could leave my prescription, take my contacts out of my eyes and throw them away in front of him, he said. Had problem with online appointments. Thought it didn't go through. Decided to wait. Early morning prior to when I wanted appointment I received an email stating that I just needed to finish up so I went back online. Received notice I was confirmed at 3:45 in morning. When I arrived early the receptionist was just rude. Said that they didn't get my phone number (that was the problem I was having. Entering my phone number), said that I should have called. The email didn't state I needed to call. The appointment went through and was approved at 3:45 am that morning. The other patient that was waiting said the receptionist was rude and abrupt with them too. The doctor was great. He needs to send his gal to a training on customer service. I actually went back up to her to explain how my phone number wouldn't go in hoping she could help me understand. She dismissed me saying I'm the first person that has had that happen in a condescending tone. Doctors great! The one older receptionist needs trained or the boot! After the Hesperia office screwed up my prescriptions, they temporarily closed for remodeling. I had to come to Apple Valley to pick up my prescription. When I found it was wrong they wouldn't give me a refund and because the Hesperia location is closed they have no records. I have never felt with such an unprofessional group of people in my life. I wouldn't recommend this optical department to anyone. I went in for an eye exam and the equipment used isn't state of the art like Lenscrafters and the whole exam felt rushed. And what burns me the worst is that when I actually went to get the prescription filled, the lady at the desk, whom has a very negative vibe about her and it comes out in her tone of voice like she's pissed off for being there. Most people would beg for a job like that and she's treating it like it's an inconvenience. But I've digressed. Back on point, I got there, stated I wanted to go forward with getting the glasses done but I wanted to discuss a question about my prescription with the doctor since I was worried about one of the selections on the paper and I was informed that my prescription was 'expired' and I was going to have to book another appointment, paying out of pocket, to speak with the doctor AND to get yet ANOTHER exam, costing more money, which I don't have. Since when do prescriptions for glasses 'expire?' And this lady was very rude and said she couldn't help and that I needed to go through the above steps to get help. I was shocked and so was my friend who was with me at the time. I'll never go to this place again and a complaint has been filed about them and their unacceptable behavior and practices. No one should be expected to get their prescriptions filled right then since some people, including me, need time to just save up the money to even be able to get them in the first place because glasses aren't cheap and I'm not rich by any means. I did not walk in here today to be met with argumentative employees and even Dr. Shih giving me a hard time. I won't be back after this. First, your phone does not work. So I have to walk in. This is after over 2 weeks of waiting for my trial pair of contact lenses to come in. Then, when I have to walk in because you have no phone, the rude staff lady (no name tag, older with black hair and glasses) tells me my wife and I were told it would !!! take 6 to 8 weeks for these to come in. We were NOT told this. I would have balked at it and said give me different contact lenses to try. So now I am wearing the temporary pair I was given by the doctor, and they are getting old and scratchy. Dr. Shih was not really helpful I do understand I have a very strong prescription and that he does not have any more samples, but it took a long time to get him to understand I just want a different set of contacts-even as he kept saying he would just write me the prescription and "not be responsible for it"---this is not what was saying. This was my first time going to Target Optical and I am impressed! Apparently, other local optometrists did not catch, did not care to catch, or were too lazy to notice that my prescription has been at the wrong power. For the past 12 years, I have been at a prescription that is not 1, not 2, but 5 times stronger than what I should be at. Dr. S was thorough in his exam (did the tests 4 different times to see what was really going on) and noticed right away that my eyes were strained. What an absolute relief I now feel at a lower power (we're gradually lowering my prescription over the next 3 years). He recommended a better set of contacts, we tried them on, and he was spot on with the contact selection. On top of that, the ladies in the office were incredibly nice and helpful! Nicole helped me, she's fantastic; but, I talked to all of them and they were all very nice. I take most negative reviews with a grain of salt because people are people. Either you were rude or they were. It's all about the vibe you give off and they give off. Either you were having a bad day, or they were. Horrible experience with Dr. Shih. Exam was less than 15 mins and was told to guess at the letters. Picked out glasses (2pair) and when I picked them up, I couldn't see. The staff was very nice, they sent them back to lab and still couldn't see clear. Dr. S did not want to re-exam my eyes because he said he was "right on" in his exam. Returned glasses without and issues with Target Optical but Dr. S was very unprofessional. After appealing to my insurance, i got another exam by another HD optometrist and wow. No wonder I can't see. I have 2 medium size cataracts and no lenses was going to help my vision. Why didn't Dr. S spot them?? He said I had a baby one and nothing to worry about. So 4 months that baby grew that fast and now in both eyes?? I think not. Never again with Dr. S and I don't recommend him at all. read more

The optometrist, Dr. Shih, at this location, is wonderful. He is very nice, calm, has wonderful bedside manner. But you know what they say, "A doctor is only as good as his staff". The woman named Margaret, that has worked there for years is awful!!!!! She is rude, abrupt and has no sense of customer relations. It is beyond me (and other's I know of who have had similar unpleasant experiences with this woman) that she still has a job there. The reason we have been going there for years to not only have our eyes examined by the very nice optometrist but also because it is convenient. We live in a very rural area and this SuperTarget is the nearest to us. We do almost all our grocery and other shopping at this store. The long standing sales staff in the store have watched our son grow up since a baby (he is 11 yrs old now). We have never had a problem with anyone in this store except this Margaret. I am hopeful that SuperTarget Optometry Corporate reads these reviews as something needs to be done about this poor excuse of a optical worker. She seems more concerned about getting out of there the moment the clock strikes closing time, rather than helping her customers. The other ladies that work there are very nice, but Margaret is so awful, my whole family would rather drive further to a LensCrafters (and forfeit our military discount) than deal with her. read more

I tried calling right at 10 for no to answer. Because I needed to reschedule and the website was showing openings for earlier but was not working. The receptionist the called herself "the manager" was absolutely rude and was talking down to me and tried talking to me like she was speaking to a child. When I tired telling her it shows on the website that was an opening she told me there wasn't and all she can do was schedule it for later. But she said it in that tone where you drag out the syllables when you're trying to talk to a child. I told her that it was rude how she was talking and I wanted to speak to manger but she told me she was the manager. So I started to talk to her the same way she spoke to me and told her to cancel my appointment. I will talk my money elsewhere. The people who work here are rude and will drive new customers away. Plus this isn't the first time I dealt with their rudeness. I came in there months ago looking for contacts and she was the exact same way then as she was now. My review of Target Optical: I am new to the hi desert area and wasn't sure where to go to get my eye exam. Being that I work M-F it's hard for me to get into a traditional eye Dr. So I decided to give Target a shot. I made an appointment on line for Sunday and was able to get in a few hours later that same day!! Everyone was very busy but greeted me and was friendly, after I filled out my paperwork Dr Jay Shih gave me my exam and was very professional and thorough. We actually had a great conversation about family and other things off topic of optometry! Then I sat down with Nicole and she was super nice and helpful. I had the best experience here at this location. I was welcome and greeted by Christina. The Dr. there was very kind and explained everything. I had an appointment for myself and my 2 daughters and he took his time with us. Christina helped me to maximize using my insurance benefits and get me some contacts and cute glasses. She took the extra time to help us and was kind about it. The other employee came in just as I was finishing and she greeted and smiled at us. Such kindness goes a long way with me. With all the covid-19 craziness happening it was such a relief to have access to Target Optical. Hours keep being lessened which is understandable, but for someone to just pick up their glasses was a feat in itself. Margaret was such a doll. She explained kindly that hours changed once again but graciously helped me out even though I wasn't within the new window of hours. Any act of kindness during these crazy times means the world to me. She was sweet and even performed the adjustment on my new glasses. I'm so appreciative. Wearing contacts with the coronavirus running rampid is actually scarier than you may think. 5 stars to the woman who took the time to help me out when my appointment kept being pushed back farther and farther everytime I called. I also had a wonderful visit when I had my eye exam. The doctor was extremely clean and helpful. If I could give this place a zero, I would. The store advertises and represents that the place is open until 6pm on Saturday. We get there with about 15 minutes to spare, but the employee was "chatting with her co-employee and told my daughter they were closed. It takes only one bad employee experience to taint the entire customer experience. Reliance on advertised times should be the hallmark of a business model. Margaret Nunez the optical manager is beyond rude and should not be working in customer service! I used my insurance for my purchase, and I did have a co pay, but their 'system' over charged me on my co pay. My insurance is the one who advised me about targets over charge. I went in to get my refund and Margaret refused to refund. She kept telling me about other discounts I received which had nothing to do with my co pay charge. I spoke with their billing department directly, and I got my refund, their department even said Margaret could have and should have done the refund there at the store! Unbelievable! Definitely complained to corporate about her poor service. If their 'system' had a discrepancy, simply fix the issue, you're a manager, wow. read more

If I could rate a 0 on this I would I usually love target and the people that work there but wow you guys really out did yourself a with your lack of customer service on top of lying?! Okay so in September I went to get contacts (I usually get acuve oasis) but according to the doctor biofinity Toric would suit me best so I agreed once I got to paying for my contacts my total for box 1 was 300$ and my box2 which is for my other eye was 100$ after tax my total was a whopping 430 and change. when I told the girl working that I could not afford that and I would like to pay the 170ishhh for my acuve she told me that the company didn't make them for my eye shape and I had to get them. So I spent the money for the contacts , 2 months later I finally got a call that the contacts were on back order for another month. So a month went by again and I went to get my contacts came home and the contacts were not my correct contact prescription so I went back and told target optical that there was something wrong and they were not my prescription. So after fighting with the lady cause she thought I was lying she finally noticed they were not mine and ordered the correct ones and I asked the lady for the inconvenience if she could please refund my purchase or at least give me the acuve oasis, she told me that acuve didn't make my contact size and was told by another woman that they didn't make my contact size so I delt with the contacts I was given. I came back to pick up my contacts after a couple weeks and asked one last time if I could order the acuve oasis contacts and after I started crying the same lady left and came back to tell me THEY HAD THE CONTACTS I WANTED THE WHOLE TIME why did target lie to me the whole time ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS can't I sue for that? Had an exam and ordered glasses. Within a couple of hours I called to cancel, was ordering glasses somewhere else. The woman told be I had to come in person to cancel. Really? Drove over and cancelled. I asked the employee (short stocky Caucasian woman with glasses) to make sure the order was released with the insurance so I could go order my glasses elsewhere. It was about 30 minutes before they closed. She told me she couldn't right them and had to get other things done. Told her I'd wait and she said she didn't know when she could get to it. There was no other person waiting to be helped. What a load of bull. Lazy? Incompetent? Bottom line she refused to help me and I will make sure everyone I can reach will know to never use Target optical. Horrible customer service!! read more

Warning: long complaint, but you might want to read if you're a contact lense wearer.. Save your money and go somewhere else!! I am a loyal target customer. I decided to try out target optical at the apple valley north location in California since I just absolutely adore target. I came in on April 9th for my appointment. At first my experience was great. They girls helped me with my glasses and took the time to find the perfect fit after the doctor made sure my prescription was perfect. The doctor also gave me a trial pair of contacts that he thought would suit me after the pair I asked for wasn't readily available and they would need to order them. I picked up my glasses a few days later and loved them and was still trying out the contacts as I only wear them on the weekends. Time went on and it slipped my mind to remind them about the trial contacts I had originally wanted. On June 21 I got a call reminding me that I need to decide if I want to purchase contacts. I called back and told them I still hadn't received the trail pairs of the night and day contact lenses I had asked for. They order the contacts and I went to pick them up and didn't want to try them on in store because it is hard on my eyes to switch from glasses to contacts and I didn't want to drive like that. I had called back on June 25th and said that I would like to order contacts now that I had tried both. The girl there had said I need come in for a follow up and I scheduled an appointment. Due to my work schedule I wasn't able to make that appointment and said that I just want to order the contacts and she said no because there is now a new doctor and he needs to see me prior to ordering and I said okay. I had rescheduled my follow up appointment a few times in the month of July and finally I got a really bad sinus infection the day of the last follow up I rescheduled and I told them that I would call back once I was better and had the time to come in to reschedule. I called back yesterday August 10th to find out that because it has been 4 months I now need to pay for another contact exam that would be $90-$120 since I can no longer use my insurance. I have NEVER in the 12 years of wearing contacts and 17 years of wearing glasses had an Optomitrist ask me to pay AGAIN for another contact exam just to order contacts. This is completely ridiculous and just a ploy to get more money out of me as a consumer. I didn't even get the contacts I asked for until late June, which hasn't been over 60 days that they claim that I had to come back and order contacts. In the last month of rescheduling my follow up appointment I was never told I needed to pay for another exam until I didn't reschedule my follow up because I didn't want to keep rescheduling my appointment and being an inconvenience to them. Well shame on me because I am not inconvenienced by target greatly. After my first visit getting contacts I RAVED about target to everyone and even referred another customer to you for her glasses, but I completely regret it. I have a lot of friends and family that go to target and I will not hesitate to rave about this negative experience as well if it is not resolved. I was told that this is the doctors policy and not targets so maybe you should reconsider the doctor at that location. This is just a money hungry ploy and a great disservice to your members. I have already paid a great deal for my glasses and for a contact exam and I shouldn't have to pay again just to order the contacts I need. After calling the store several times, I spoke with the manager who talked to the doctor and agreed that if I signed a waiver releasing the doctor of all responsibility they would finally give me my prescription. Went in, signed the waiver, got my prescription and left. When I got home I ordered my contacts and even sent in a picture of the prescription, which was rejected due to the dates being illegible. I called the store and talked to the manager about this and she could care less. Didn't apologize and wanted me to make another trip in to get the white copy which was supposed to be better. Why not give me that in the first place?!? Thankfully 1800contacts will verify with the doctor, but this is just unacceptable!! I have tried complaining to target and have been passed back and forth between guest relations, target optical, and their social media team after posting my complaint on Facebook and NO ONE seems to care or will even consider my complaint. I thought the world of this company but honestly they don't care about their customers which makes me rethink ever shopping there again. read more

I loved the Dr they had in there last year. Upon returning this year, it was easy to get an appointment. And then my satisfaction ended. There is a new Dr. Got there early only to fill out paperwork, even tho when I made my appt they confirmed all my info so I kmow they already had it. Then I waited, with my toddlers in tow, for over an hour because the Dr was supposedly with another patient. But when we arrived I saw the Dr standing and reading at the desk in the back. The patient who was in the back walked out as we arrived. So Im unsure what was actually holding him up but I dont have time to wait an hour past my appointment time.
