Tucked into a back area off of Oakdale and Sylvan, this is not the easiest place to get to. But once there, you experience the standard that is a Mis Compadres. Walk in and go to your right to order, they are considered a bar, so you can get a couple libations with your meal. The menu is expansive and of a reasonable price. The portions are always large, and your money is well spent. I ordered the combination taco and enchilada. First I had to hit up the salsa bar. House avocado salsa is rich in flavor, Spicy tomato, and a mild couzin, A roasted tomato salsa that is my favorite . Pickled jalapeños and carrots, lemons and extras. Everything is brought out to your table when your order is ready. My meal was almost perfect, the carne asada was plentiful and tender. My chicken enchilada w red sauce was perfectly shredded. Rice and beans had good texture and great taste. I love the food, but sadly my order is wrong every time I go. Ordered the same order three times and three times got something else. Been wanting to stop here, finally had a chance for lunch. When you walk in you order and then take a seat. They give you a number and the food is brought out to you. Soda machine and salsa bar to the far left. Different salsa, avocado one was awesome not spicy at all. I order a Taco Combination Meal, came with 2 tacos (soft or fried) I chose fried. Homemade fried and good crunch and did not split underneath. Came with meat (I ordered carne asada) lettuce, cheese, green salsa (mild) and sour cream. A lot of meat and tasted really good. Also came with Spanish rice and refried beans, both good. I also order a chicken tortilla soup (mainly because I was cold, definitely too much food. The soup was hot and hit the spot. Big chunks of chicken, carrots, potatoes on the side they give you fried tortilla strips, half of an avocado diced, cheese and hotter salsa to add if you wanted. I chose not to add. I don't like leaving negative reviews, specially a place we have supported and visited often. Service is great, decor and vibe are great, and we can walk to this place so, so. Sooo convenient. That's the main reason we have frequented so much over the years. We have a gathering with friends where we go to each others homes for lunch once a month or so and we usually take chicken nachos from here and they are always great. You know how they say never say never or always???? Sometimes the food is great and other times same dish is an epic fail. Last few times I got the torta milanesa with fries and that had been pretty good, the last time fries where soggy and milanesa not cooked and hard, kind of gross. Wife usually has a bean and rice burrito so that is hard to mess up, until today, no flavor, needed salt rice was hard and maybe old, just bad. I figured good old nachos should be safe since my last torta was not good......what a mistake that was, rancid and old chips, how does a Mexican restaurant serve rancid chips??! That's the last draw for me won't come back again. I really like the people that run and own it but the inconsistency of the food is just too much of a gamble. As convenient as this is , I'll rather drive or go to the always busy and usually packed Mexican restaurant across the street and wait. During the height of the pandemic, my wife and I went here twice, both times I saw people who I was told there the owners, with NO masks on (the servers to their credit did). I will never forget their lack of concern for their customers and failure to model this important COVID countermeasure. Tonight must have been an off night. Several folks that ordered food complained of wrong orders and mine was no exception. I ordered a Super Burrito which is usually gigantic and was only $7.95 a little while ago. It is now almost double that. Prices aren't listed anywhere so they can charge you whatever they feel like. Was charge $51 for a Super Burrito, a two taco combo, flautist, and a chicken torta. There was nothing super about my burrito. No pico, no cheese, no sour cream. I'm pretty sure I was charged for a super but given a regular. Usually very good and great portions. Tonight I wonder if it's a new cook? Anyway, no bueno tonight. The staff is always respectful and helpful with special requests. The dining area is clean, if a little plain, but you don't really mind. A couple of years ago this business was really in their "pocket." Food was consistently good, customer service was present and friendly, dining room always clean amidst the crowds and I was also impressed how well kept their famous salsa bar was. This past year this business has had a cataclysmic fall from grace. The employees seem upset now. A request for more chips gets met with irate glances , the salsa bar looks like toddlers have been sitting on it playing with the different salsas and splashing around , and the food has been equivalent to my high school daughters attempt at making me a bean burrito. What happened ? Was there an ownership change ? Are they just not caring anymore since their cemented "Modestos' okay-est taqueria award" was quietly awarded to them by the towns' consensus? Food was horrible! My wife had "steak" fajitas that were made with bland flavored burrito meat. For my 3 1/2 year old I ordered chicken tenders, which were not "tenders" at all-- they were long shaped chicken nuggets (made with mix ground chicken meat) being sold off as tenders which is bulls**t, my son did not eat that nonsense because "it wasn't good" he said-- I don't blame him, we we're fooled by thieves (apparently these people don't know that a "chicken tender" is an actual part off of a chicken breast, so they are selling this crap under the pretense it is a "tender". Last, and worst of all, my shrimp burrito was disgusting! The shrimp were not deveined and all had full digestive tracts in them . Technically, humans can consume this nasty shrimp intestine filled with poop, BUT I did not pay good money for this disgusting crap (literally). Shame on you people! I remember years ago this place was great. My family and I will not be returning ever again... You ruined my family dinner, made my stomachs sick, and took hard earned money for crappy food (once again, literally). Hopefully the owners see this and fire whoever made these poor decisions for food "standards"!
