Carne asada, carnitas, pastor, and pollo asado tacos.

Looking for authentic Mexican food? From the limes, onions, and loads of cilantro, all the way to abuela standing in the kitchen making the best tacos I've had in ages was exactly what I wanted. Just a quick hop off of 101 from the south Willits exit. I'll be stopping again on my drive back south. Pastor was the best!!!

Our go to place on our way through Willits. The Fajitas have never disappointed. The chips and salsa are tasty too and come with your meal.

    carnitas tacos

We stopped here for a late lunch on our way home from camping in the redwoods. The staff were super friendly and the food was really, really good. My partner got a chimichanga that was insane. My carnitas tacos were great. The beans and rice were surprisingly impressive. It's a casual place but everything was very nicely plated. Seating is all indoors, but it's a large airy space and staff were wearing masks. There's also a restroom for customers. Will definitely return at our next opportunity!

This place has changed hands recently and has suffered for it. My Pollo el Pastor is no more, regardless of what the menu says.

Food was great -- table was a bit sticky -- cockroach met me at the door upon departure -- not going again.

There are some traditional items, but a lot of "tweener" food sitting between Mexican and American, while not, however, living in the space of the old fashions Mexican places of my youth that specialized in Americanized Mexican food. I have been here a lot, with mixed reviews. Today was not the best day, although some things were very good. Starting off, the chips were stale, which was sad because I remember them being pretty good. I have always found the salsas weird. There is a green salsa, that tastes herby and not at all like chile verde, there is a red salsa that is super mild, and an orange salsa that has a nice kick, and then there is some bean dip, which is never wrong. Our favorite thing is the shrimp in cream sauce and it is really good. Big shrimp and bathed in a delicious creamy sauce with mushrooms. I don't remember seeing this in a Mexican restaurant before but it works! The carnitas had good flavor but were tough and dry. I have had them here before when they were MUCH better, so I was disappointed. The worst was the chile relleno. Good chile rellenos use a Chile Poblano, stuffed with something (usually a white melty cheese, but could be piccadillo, or even a fish mixture (that's how my Sinaloan Grandmother made them sometimes). Then it is covered with a puffy egg mixture where the egg whites are supposed to be whipped up light, then the yolks with maybe a little flour blended in, the chile carefully covered with this then fried up in a pan. El Chicano's had no fluffy egg batter, the chile was right, but then it was covered in cheddar cheese that was cooked hard and covered with red sauce. I didn't care for it at all. The chile with the cheddar cheese was just a weird flavor and I missed the fluffy exterior of a traditional chile relleno. Service was ok. When we went to pay however, we found that they just ran the bill and didn't ask for a signature or a tip. Under the glass on the table is a handwritten note that said that tips had to be cash. So what a surprise! Luckily I had some cash on me so I could tip our server, but this is a terrible idea and I bet a lot of these waiters don't get tipped properly.

First thing I had to test was the rice because if you know, you know. It was always the best I'd had at any Mexican restaurant anywhere, and I'm happy to report nothing has changed. Still fluffy, still flavorful, still exactly what I remembered. My son ordered enchiladas with their green sauce and that sauce deserves its own paragraph. Tangy, bright, and full of flavor without being overwhelming. Definitely something I would order myself next time. I went with the El Mexicano burrito and the poblano peppers inside absolutely made it. Deep flavor, and just full of cheese, and one of those meals where you slow down a second just to appreciate it. I also tried the birria and the flavor alone already has me planning what I'm ordering next visit. Service was excellent. Attentive without hovering and genuinely helpful. One thing I really appreciated is how flexible they are. They'll adjust dishes for taste or dietary needs and pretty much anything can be made vegetarian, which makes it easy when you're dining with different preferences. There's also plenty of seating, which makes it great whether you're coming in solo, with family, or with a group. For me this wasn't just a meal, it was a reminder of a place I used to enjoy back on the coast, and it was nice to find that same quality and consistency still alive here. I'll definitely be back.

The restaurant has a semi-open kitchen and it's always fun to see your food being made. Agua frescas were ordered, I had the horchata and it was refreshing. Food came out fast, fresh, and portions were hefty. We left happy and recharged for our road trip. We'll be back again.
