A lot of people who grew up in union city and went to James logan love this place!! Even though the customer service really sucks here... I don't know why I keep coming here. I haven't been to any other Tapioca Express in the bay area but the one in San Diego on Convoy far surpasses this one. You would think they would be as least somewhat similar since it is a chain, but nope. Their food menu is lousy and their drinks taste even more powdery than usual. How can you not love this place?! After moving away from the bay to a place that has not one decent boba place, I repeat NOT ONE, you start to appreciate the little shops you once took for granted. I mean, how can you not like a place that is open in to the wee hours of the morning on Fridays & Saturdays. From what I remember, they were open pretty late during weekdays as well. Their bobas are always cooked perfectly! There has not been one time where the boba was under or over cooked. I absolutely miss the watermelon smoothie... mmmmmm how I want it now! On Sunday night around 6:50 pm, I got kicked out of this Tapioca Express. I've been waiting in line for 30 minutes and then the moment I got to the front, the lady working said that I was looking at the menu too long. It was at most 30 seconds of looking at the menu and she refused to serve me for some reason. If it were up to me, I would fire her. many times when i was in high school we'd head over here just to burn time away. it's slightly more expensive, but if i took the time to analyze it on a social level i would say the following: Given the size of Union City's population and resources, Tapioca Express is a beneficial force for it's purpose. Youth of all ages, from middle school to high school, flock here afterschool and drink non-alcoholic drinks surrounded in an atmosphere of friendly music, lights, and comic books. The fruity, ice drinks is a great alternative to drugs, and it provides a gathering ground for teens and youth not seen elsewhere in the city. Should I be elected to the city council, I would expand the services of this shop, because it is so popular amongst the youth. Running late into the night, it is common to see racers with their modified rides outside the little drink joint. From leather jackets to sweaters to mini-skirts, Tapioca Express... or "Tap X" as the youth call it, is a deliciously delightful decedent shop you must try out at least once. Just be wary of the pricing END: get the chicken, and a drink (should have a combo), the store preys on high school students, and it's noticeable (bring in school id for discounts) smart business idea that it's competition (which is literally a few stores down) should adopt. read more

Horrible and rude customer service. In addition they have a surcharge of $1 on every debit card payments and they don't accept credit cards. Only cash payments preferred(shady). In other words would not recommend this place at all. There are better tea places in the area. Good luck ! read more

Be careful when you come here because they charged me an extra $1 for each transaction on my debit card just because I have Bank of America. They put on my receipt that I have an American Express debit card. They tricked me and took money from my card without asking me. The service is very bad and are not allowed to do this when you have a card with a PIN number. When I asked the cashier why he did this and I don't use American Express, he said "whatever, this is our policy". This is how they are stealing people's money. Hands down BEST location out of all the TapEx cafes! Best food, fastest service, and best drinks. Anything on the menu will not disappoint you. I recommend getting the popcorn chicken with EXTRA basil (for an additional $0.50), a Vanilla Cookie Snow Bubble (which tastes like Oreos), or a Passionfruit Green Tea with boba. SO GOOD!! read more

Tapioca Express is my favorite boba place in Union City. Nearby locations (Sharetea, Mr. Green Bubble, Sno-Crave, etc.) are fine, but I like the variety here as well as the fact that they offer snacks because not all boba stops do. Some things to know: - They only take cash. - It's always busy no matter what time of the day. - This place is open 365 days a year. Yes, even Christmas, New Year's, etc. - You can ask for a stamp card to get free drinks after obtaining a certain amount of stamps. Usually I just order thai milk tea or a peach-mango snowbubble, which are both amazing! For snacks, I always like crispy chicken or the crispy chicken steak especially because they include basil. The fried dumplings are pretty tasty too. The menu is huge for both drinks and snacks so it can be overwhelming, but they have basically every flavor you could imagine. However, I do have a few complaints that, if fixed, could earn TapEx their fifth star back. Firstly, the chicken can be hit-or-miss which sucks because when they make it right, it's my favorite place to grab popcorn chicken. Sometimes it's juicy, tender, and flavorful, but there have been a handful of occasions where I've been given soggy, rubbery chicken. Second, although this one is mostly subjective: their spice levels don't go far enough! I typically grab level 5 for spiciness, but I wish they offered a higher spice level because I love the heat. Overall, it's reliable and consistent (except for the chicken). You can always expect your food and drinks to be made the same way every time. If they start nailing the chicken every time, I don't think I'll ever step foot into another boba location ever again. read more

I think this Tapioca Express is the flagship store, at least in Northern California, but it's the only place I'll go to for the #57 (basic pearl tea) because they're consistently good. I never have to worry about hard or not-sweet-enough boba and there's something inexplicable about their milk tea recipe. I can't put my finger on it but it's why I never stray from my trusty #57. Even though there's a Quickly 3 minutes from my house, I'll still make (or convince my fiance to make) the 20 minute roundtrip trek to Tapioca Express when I'm craving pearl tea, which is just about every other day. read more

Since there are no half stars, I'll give Tapioca Express four stars instead of the three and a half I wanted to give. This is probably the second or third time I've been to this particular Tapioca Express. The service is pretty good, atmosphere is always upbeat, and quality of product is just fine. This is one of the best tap ex's I've been to so far. I live in San Jose and none of the tap ex's in my area compare to this one. I ordered a Taro milk tea with egg pudding and my drink was on point. It wasn't too milky or too sweet. It was just right. Egg pudding tastes different at every boba place I go to, but the egg pudding they have here is hella good. Their egg pudding would taste good with any of there milk teas. So I suggest trying that out for anyone who loves egg pudding. Surprisingly, there wasn't a long line when I came in. I've read reviews about this place saying its always packed. But if you go in the morning, then you won't have to deal with the long line. They also charge you for using your atm, so don't come empty handed! read more

This Tapex was one of the original boba places to open up in the area. You can expect to wait in line that goes out the door most of the time. Came here under the impression that they accept card but I should've known that as an Asian boba shop establishment, they're mainly cash unless you wanna pay $1 surcharge for debit card transactions or withdraw cash from their ATM machine that charges a $.50 surcharge. Three stars for their jasmine milk tea cause it was meh. I'm biased though bc I'm comparing them to Verde, Gongcha and other crazy good boba shops in LA, and I've only had their jasmine milk tea. I feel guilty for liking this place. There are so many boba places now that focus on brewing fresh tea, customizing your drinks, or are chains from Taiwan that I should like more. However, their milk tea (less sweet) and popcorn chicken (spice level 3) totally hits the spot. The milk tea cools down the spiciness of the chicken and it's the most amazing combination. I agree! Workers here don't smile! I was here Saturday 10/20/18 around 4:30pm and Sandy took my order. She wasn't happy, she took my order , repeat all of my orders and still got them wrong. I had to wait another 10 min for them to correct my order. After 10min, guess what, I said no boba on my 3 orders of course there were bobas. Ughh, so frustrated.
