So I'm from the Bay Area visiting family down in San Diego. Up north there's relatively decent Mexican food, but nothing on the level of Tapatio's. The only thing I can think that compares is Cholo's in LA. Where I'm from burritos are 20 bucks, and like I said they're decent, but you can tell level of care and competence at Tapatio's is on another strata. The tortillas are fried to a perfect crisp. The cheese is melted perfectly. The chili rellanos exquisitely dipped in just the right batter... the salsas are smoky sweet. Don't miss Tapatio's! read more

Tried the beef enchiladas and it came with Picco de Gallo. I added some chipotle and salsa verde to it and it was perfect. Good portion size and it was made to order. They have fresh chips so I tried that as well. It's so freshly made it made me feel like bagged chips are stale. There's a little salsa bar off to the side. Service is always friendly and fast. Tapatios Mexican Grill - Shredded beef enchiladas - Mexican Near Me - Alpine, California

Some of the best breakfast burritos! But the best part is they are so fresh and the salsa is just so amazing. Their salsa bar is the best I've ever had. read more

We've known this place for the past 25 years. We moved away from Alpine 16 years ago, but we always talked about how amazing the food was and how much we missed it. After 16 years, we finally came back just to eat here and relive those memories. I'm so happy to say that the quality of the food hasn't changed one bit. Still absolutely amazing, with the best customer service! Some places really do stand the test of time. read more

I ordered the shrimp burrito and the Carne Asada burrito, along with the Carne Asada taco. I must admit, for a small, hole in the wall place, Tapatios is something special. All of the flavors of a traditional Mexican restaurant bottled up in a small little venue!!! You'll be pleasantly surprised!!! And, yes, I will be back!!! read more

The food was delicious, everyone loved what they got. A huge shout out to the cashier that helped me order. He was fielding phone calls and walk in order pickups, and took the time to help me build two vegan meals for some people in our group. I highly recommend the potato tacos plus guac for your meat free friends. The salsa bar was freshly stocked when I came in, careful with the orange, a little goes a long way and it has a slow burn. This place is on the smaller side and fills up fast. We didn't stay and eat, we rolled a few doors up the street and enjoyed our lunch in the back of McIlhenney's at their patio tables. read more

I wish I could transport this Mexican spot to San Diego. The prices are fantastic, portions are huge, and it tastes pretty good too. My husband got shredded beef hard shell tacos and each one was quite a bit larger than I was expecting. He said it was delicious. My fajitas plate was $12 and it was a massive plate of food complete with refried beans, rice, sour cream, guacamole, and 4 corn tortillas. The refried beans really stood out as some of the best I've had. We were super satisfied with our meal. There aren't too many seats on the inside, but the patio is large and nice. read more

I'm extremely picky , if I bite into a chewy burrito I'm spitting it out and throwing it away out of fear of getting another chewy bite . I asked for carne asada cheese and fries . Got exactly that , crispy fries, tender carne and some cheese. Their salsa is killer . 10/10 my 5 year old also couldn't get enough , should have gotten 2 . read more

Went out to McIlhenneys on Sunday and wanted lunch. We ordered food from Tapatios. It was ready exactly when they said it would be. I have ever eaten a burrito so fast in my entire life. The pollo Asado burrito wasn't funky like most chicken in burritos. It was white breast meat with wonderful flavor. My husband devoured his carne asada nachos. My daughter enjoyed the beans and rice. It will now be our go to place in Alpine. Grab food and eat in the brewery's lovely backyard! read more

Great food and prices. The carne asada is super tasty and has a good char on it. Salsas are amazing too!

Alllways a reliable spot if I'm passing through alpine. I love a good hole in the wall food spot. Their customer service is top notch. Their prices are unmatched. Wait time is low. And most importantly, the food tastes GREAT. Every breakfast burrito I get from here is 5 stars. Make sure you grab all their salsa's before you go! If they're making these by hand then OMG I need them to bottle it and sell it. Every one of them are great. And they have pickled veggies, a delicacy I don't always find at other taco shops. Check them out for sure! read more

Some good street parking. Located in the center of Alpine. The food is great and the staff is super friendly. Seems like this is the best taco shop in Alpine and the locals know it. Inside they had a few seats and a small bathroom. They even have a small TV for the Padre games. Great spot to get some tacos or even one of their daily specials. Can't wait to go back. read more

This is Mexican food you wish your mama made! The tamales no joke! The flavors are big and bold; the sauce has that special something that I can't quite put my finger on - maybe abuela's love? All I can tell you is that the last time I had tamales this delicious, they were made, not only by my almost Mexican grandma but also a successful restaurant owner and chef. I take tamales very personally, and these went straight to my heart. The burritos ate big-time and scrumptious, too, according to my mom (grilled chicken) and husband (carne asada). "Have you seen the size of this burrito?" My mom was shocked, and they were just as big in flavor. One more observation - the refried beans are fire! Even reheated the following and the next day, they taste as if they were freshly made. I've been back just to get them! There are self-serve chips and salsa bar; these are great before, during, and after your meal (leftovers). The building is small, just like any good mom-and-pop shop, and it's next door to a motel. So, if you're not looking closely, you might miss it. There's picnic-type seating outside and a few tables inside. And yes, there is disabled parking in front of the building without stairs. This is a definite must stop, whether you're a local or just visiting. Enjoy! read more

Yesterday, while out in the Campo area with friends, I was starving and looking for a place to eat. My friend suggested Tapatio's in Alpine, and though a surf and turf burrito in the desert sounded odd, it was one of the best I've ever had. My friends loved their dishes too, and I highly recommend stopping by Tapatio's if you're in the area or heading east. I don't have photos, but trust me, you'll love it! If you're out east county San Diego look no further than Tapatio's for good Mexican food. read more

This is the Mexican food place to go to if you're looking for something good a$$ Mexican good. I always call in my order and it's read in 5-10mins. This guys are fast with no BS. Prices are reasonable and the food is great. Try the surf and turf burrito. It's the best! read more

Sorry other local taco places but Tapatios just advanced to best Alpine taco stand! The salsas were outstanding and frankly the highlight. Prices are totally reasonable, preparation was lightening fast, and service was friendly without being forced. We ate chips and salsa provided while waiting in the small dining room with three tables. Steak burrito and fish tacos were the best entrees of the variety we tested. We will be back for sure. read more

First time here and we're happy. The carne asada nachos have nacho cheese on them. Yum. Very friendly and fast service. The salsa bar had 5 choices and carrots. My go to taco shop in Alpine. Best carne asada ever!!! We especially love the fish tacos and hard shell beef tacos too! Omg and the carne asada fries are SO GOOD!!! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu tbh. Thanks Taps! read more

This shop is a to go order preference hole in the wall, their salsa bar does not look appetizing at all, actually kinda scary looking. We waited 40 minutes for our order which included the "great surf and turf" burrito, watched about 10 to go orders being piled on the counter behind the cashier while we waited. For the record the burritos were so watery the bottom fell out and got all over our clothing, it was soggy and gross, shrimp wasn't cleaned all the way and the beef tasted like liver. Im gonna give this spot a rest, it has great reviews but reality says otherwise. There are other choices in alpine that actually have a restaurant where you can sit and enjoy. 0 stars, pure disappointment. period. read more

Great menu selection! I had their carne asada burrito and it was delicious (: I'm sure their other items are great as well

The best! Carne asada tacos hard shell were delicious. Everything we order is perfect!

BEST little taco shop in all of San Diego! Super friendly, amazing food, and low costs.

Driving home to SD from AZ and made a stop here for lunch based on a quick Yelp search. So glad we did! Best Mexican food we've had in a long time. The beef tacos were filled with flavorful, juicy machaca and the lettuce and cheese were so fresh. Rolled beef tacos were also juicy and the guac was fresh and delicious. The California burrito was HUGE (I only ate half) filled with plenty of beef and fries. Also the tortilla was soft and fresh. They offer a nice variety of salsas, spicy carrots and tortilla chips. We dined in and the AC in the small dining area kept it nice and cool. We'll def be back when driving through! read more

What a great experience and fantastic food! Stopped in here because we were recommended by the local hotel and we're in town for the weekend. Three hours on the freeway and starving. This was a fantastic gym! The staff were so friendly and deeply hard-working people the food was amazing and oh my God the salsa flavors were really incredible. There was one that is a little on the smoky sweet side and just so insanely flavorful. I wanted to drink the whole cup. Food portions were huge and fresh and delicious. We had tacos and burritos. Serve yourself chips and salsa bar when we're in the area again we will definitely stop by and thanks to the staff for a great experience. read more
