So I'm from the Bay Area visiting family down in San Diego. Up north there's relatively decent Mexican food, but nothing on the level of Tapatio's. The only thing I can think that compares is Cholo's in LA. Where I'm from burritos are 20 bucks, and like I said they're decent, but you can tell level of care and competence at Tapatio's is on another strata. The tortillas are fried to a perfect crisp. This is Mexican food you wish your mama made! The tamales no joke! The flavors are big and bold; the sauce has that special something that I can't quite put my finger on - maybe abuela's love? All I can tell you is that the last time I had tamales this delicious, they were made, not only by my almost Mexican grandma but also a successful restaurant owner and chef. I take tamales very personally, and these went straight to my heart. The burritos ate big-time and scrumptious, too, according to my mom (grilled chicken) and husband (carne asada). "Have you seen the size of this burrito?" My mom was shocked, and they were just as big in flavor. One more observation - the refried beans are fire! Even reheated the following and the next day, they taste as if they were freshly made. I've been back just to get them! There are self-serve chips and salsa bar; these are great before, during, and after your meal (leftovers). The building is small, just like any good mom-and-pop shop, and it's next door to a motel. So, if you're not looking closely, you might miss it. There's picnic-type seating outside and a few tables inside. And yes, there is disabled parking in front of the building without stairs. For the record the burritos were so watery the bottom fell out and got all over our clothing, it was soggy and gross, shrimp wasn't cleaned all the way and the beef tasted like liver. Im gonna give this spot a rest, it has great reviews but reality says otherwise. This was a fantastic gym! The staff were so friendly and deeply hard-working people the food was amazing and oh my God the salsa flavors were really incredible. The beef tacos were filled with flavorful, juicy machaca and the lettuce and cheese were so fresh. Rolled beef tacos were also juicy and the guac was fresh and delicious. The California burrito was HUGE (I only ate half) filled with plenty of beef and fries. Also the tortilla was soft and fresh. They offer a nice variety of salsas, spicy carrots and tortilla chips.
