We had colorful drinks which were highly recommended that I do not remember and I did not capture pics. We ate several items off the menu, did not capture all of them, the stand outs for me were the tacos and the salmon. We were surprised with a lovely glass of champagne by our lovely server. The server was phenomenal and attentive... never ever have I seen my water glass being refilled as much as I did here and I am a water drinker and loved it!!! I expected softer and chewier noodles and we weren't fans. For drinks the threes mai tai ($15.50) and mango scratch margarita ($15.50) were good. We got all small plate foods, partially because our server recommended we load up more of those instead of the entrees. We decided to have it in Paia, therefore stay at the Paia inn, therefore have the wedding rehearsal dinner at their restaurant Vana Paia. We were a little nervous due to numerous calls to the restaurant and not receiving clear communication from the hostess. The email was also bouncing back. "What was going on?" Luckily Sara (the owner) called us and apologize, as they were going through a restructuring in their team (all makes sense now) a wave of relief simmered over us. PHEW! After that, we set up with a few calls with Brandon and Charlie. Both FUCKING amazing gentlemen. They are both absolutely super professional, and on top of their game. (Great job Sara). They reassured my fiancé and I will be taken care of and the food will be delicious. They laid out a sample menu, with some signature drinks for our dinner, AND an on-site sushi chef just rolling out rolls, and nigiris. Absolutely bomb. The food was top tier, comfort food. The butterfish, full of umami. Followed with the mushrooms MMMM. The NY strip, medium rare, only way to eat it. The bartender Teddy was slanging Netflix show worthy drinks out to all of us, and not one of them disappoint. I'm a whiskey drinker and the old fashion signature drink AND the nobushi whiskey drink I had night before, perfect. We got an all ahi bowl ($16.99) with ahi spicy garlic, half pound of hamachi poke, and half pound of salmon poke ninja teriyaki and chili oil. The ahi spicy garlic had TONS of fried garlic; it tasted good at first but it was too much near the end. I had to remove some as we kept eating at the end. I was interested in the hamachi poke since that wasn't a common fish in poke but it was fresh. The salmon poke was another one we didn't see often, and I liked the flavor and it wasn't too spicy. This is a good spot if you're looking for lunch and also to grab some drinks for later on.

After I finished it, he asked me another 3-4 times if I wanted another one, despite me telling him I was good after the first one. I appreciate attentive service, but the guy was incessant and trying to upsell us. As far as dinner goes, Food started to trickle out slowly over the next 5-10 minutes, and it was clear that the kitchen wasn't organized. I ordered the bulgogi tacos, one of my favorites at the other location. Unfortunately, they were lukewarm. The worst part was, they completely forgot about my father, who only ordered fries, and when he received them, they were lukewarm, limp and soggy. After my father asked for the tab, he noticed there wasn't a mandatory tip included for the wait staff, but there was actually a separate 4% tip for the kitchen. Since when is this a thing? How about you pay your kitchen a livable wage and quit putting it on the customers? So my father refused the pre-selected 20% tip and tried to put in a "custom" tip of 16% of the bill, which when added to the 4% would have been a total of 20% - in my opinion pretty generous, considering the lackluster service. Here's where it got bad. The server was practically breathing down his neck while he entered his tip, and when he was handed the payment gizmo because it wouldn't take the tip amount, loudly exclaimed "That's not enough!" and then threw it down on the table and stormed off. How demeaning and embarrassing! Is this how you treat customers here? I helped my mortified father figure out how to make the machine accept his tip (despite my suggestion that we drop the amount down to a penny) and we left without another word. Monkeypod, shame on you for: - embarrassing my father, who is a very generous man, - employing wait staff that openly demeans their customers, - serving us mediocre, lukewarm food, - and demanding an extra 4% for the kitchen that didn't take any pride in what they made. This particular Whalers is at the Shops of Wailea. I was in search of a specific set of Island Essence lotions/oils that a friend requested. I knew Whaler's would have them, and indeed they did. However, the price went up substantially. I really had no choice but to buy them anyway since my friend wanted them and was paying for them. I will always visit a Whaler's General Store when presented the opportunity.
