All of the food was fresh and everyone at the table enjoyed their meal, except for me. I like to try new dishes and asked the server which dish he preferred and he said the chicken tahini was one of his favorites but did warn me that a lot of people don't like the sauce because it's quite powerful. I decided I wanted to try it anyways because I like orange and tahini. I thought the first bite was really good and thought I was going to be one of the few people that could handle the powerful flavor but unfortunately I was not. The sauce had an extremely strong orange flavor and after my first couple bites I couldn't eat any more. I found this spot in Gilman Village. It is amidst the many shops in the area. The food tasted authentic and amazing. The gyros were spectacular. At first I thought I would need to order another, however I quickly realized that one was more than enough. It was extremely tasty. My dinner partner also enjoyed the spinach salad and baklava. I love Mediterranean food! This place I did not love. The service was poor, the food over-salted and underwhelming (had a Gyro platter), and the Greek salad was so bad I ate a few cucumbers and left the rest. Good food and friendly service. As we found ourselves post workout, in-between traditional meal times, and hungry, we were craving something filling and fast. My call was answered promptly and our order was going to be ready in 15-20 minutes. That was just enough time for a quick shower and commute there! The gentleman who took my call was also the one to process my order. He was cordial and both he and the other gentleman I could see in the kitchen were wearing masks. They also had cups for sanitized and used pens. The indoor dining area looked inviting and they have outdoor seating too. We stopped in on a rainy night - we were on the east side for a moonlight snowshoe the following day. I was immediately struck by the kako mati I could see from the doorway. They had dishes I hadn't seen since a trip to Athens: Kalamarakia, Avgolemono, Kokonisto Arni, etc. We ordered kalamarakia to start with along with the Greek beer of the day and a glass of Greek wine. We ordered the Dionysus plate along with a lamb souvlaki - both with faki. Our server was prompt and friendly. She readily admitted she didn't know anything about the Greek beer but would find out anything I wanted to know. There was no need. The faki came out first and how I missed good faki. This was perfect. Light lemon flavor, tender lentils, and thick broth. The kalamarakia arrived shortly after. It came with tzatziki on the side. The dinners came right as the soup bowls and appetizer plate was cleared. I dive into the boiled potatoes - if you haven't had the boiled Greek potatoes they are awesome. These were right on point. The lamb souvlaki was tender and melted in our mouths. The dolmades are meat stuffed just like Athens. The moussaka was very good. We were a large group of 9, and there were more people in the restaurant. By the end, we were the only ones left, yet the service was slow. We spent a total of 2 hours in the restaurant. We gave a heads-up 30 minutes before leaving (30 minutes after putting in the order for mains), yet our main dishes arrived just 5 minutes before departure. Please consider hiring another server. It's disheartening to give 3 stars for excellent food due to service issues. Also, please install a self-closing mechanism for the main door (and the hall leading to the restrooms). It's a bit rude to greet people by saying that they entered three times (different groups) and didn't close the door behind them. And they need to make sure they close the door behind them... The menu is not as comprehensive as you might wish (no taramosalta, no pastitsio), but what they do offer is done with passion and excellence. We couldn't decide what to try so we had the Olympus plate and the Tantalus plate which gave us some lamb, spanakopita, moussaka, chicken gyro, dolmades, avgolemono, potatoes, vegetables, and tzatziki. We ordered food via Door Dash. I want to start out by saying that Greek food is my favorite. We had wanted to try this place for a really long time but rarely are in Issaquah. Tonight I really wanted Greek food so ordered delivery. Well, this was a massive disappointment. Was excited to see they had skordalia, I'm not kidding about this - it looks and tastes like they take their normal potatoes and whip them up then pour some olive oil on top. Seriously, it was more like an oil slick on top. No garlic taste at all and that's normally a pretty heavy component of the recipe. There is NOTHING that goes into a true Greek skordalia recipe that is yellow (I'm going to guess they added tumeric). I took a total of 3 bites and couldn't stomach any more of it, it was so oily that it was greasy. How you make a dish like this greasy is beyond me. I ordered the Atenian Plate. The lamb souvlaki was over cooked and very dry and not very seasoned. The potatoes were overcooked and I don't even know how to describe the taste...lemon but not good. The spanakopita was heavy on spinach and light on feta, the filo was soft but I'm going to guess it's because it was in a container with no holes for the steam to escape so it softened. It wasn't too bad, I do prefer crispy filo but I'm not going to fault them on this one because I got it to-go. The keftedes were pretty decent too, but wished they weren't sitting on pita bread - the bread was soggy because of it and soaked up the sauce. The domaldes...not good. The meat was mush. I love domaldes normally but these were nasty. My son got the Dionysus place sad to say this wasn't much better. He said the Gyro mean was ok - really glad they didn't mess that up. His had moussaka, I was trying to be hopeful, but nope. What should have been a thick bechamel was very dry. It was basically eggplant on the bottom with dry funky seasoned meat piled on top followed by a dry bechamel (seriously not even sure if it should be called a bechamel). My son also got the Galactoboureko, something I've never had before so no clue what it's normally like. I will say it was different. I can't say there was a custard inside because it wasn't a custard. Custard is creamy, this was more really thick almost like it had filo inside it as well. I didn't taste any orange or lemon either. It was mildly ok. One last thing - one of my son's domaldes has something on it that looked like torn paper - photo included. Whatever it is it's not any type of food item. So the last time I came to Tantalus was in 1996. I wasn't even sure it was still here. To my utter joy, it WAS! I came in last night and with the beautiful weather, it was amazing to sit on the patio! I was so excited to see if the food here was as good as it was 25 years ago. And I was NOT disappointed. First of all the ambiance on the deck was amazing. Again, partially the weather, partially the comfortable seating area, and partially the wait staff, who was extremely helpful and accommodating. The tzatziki and pita bread was an ideal starter! It had the perfect amount of garlic and burst with flavor on the warm pita! For the main dish, I got the Dionysus Plate. The gyro meat was excellent, and honestly I had lesser expectations for the spanakopita, moussaka and dolmades. Boy did I underestimate them! I started with the moussaka and my taste buds were having a party in my mouth! Amazing, truly.... wow! Then I tried the spanakopita which was good, but not mind-blowing. I left the dolmades to last because I had the lowest expectations for them. Once again, I was wrong. Unless you consider that I saved the BEST for last. Wow, once again, flavor fireworks went off in my mouth which caused me to utter sounds of pure delight! I also got a Horiatiki Salad (aka "Greek" salad: of course NO lettuce!) to go, and it was utter perfection, even the next day! I definitely splurged on this meal. I did not skimp on the things that I love to eat and I rarely spend as much on dinner. But I can honestly say that this is one of the best meals I have had in recent memory. Uh oh. When we got there we realized we had eaten there before and didn't like it. Since we came a long way, we thought we'd give it another try. On the plus side, the service as quick and friendly. The warm pita bread, baklava and galactoboureko were good. On the negative side, was the rest of the food. Greece cuisine is my favorite and I have eaten at many Greek restaurants. I had to send my glass of wine back because it had lip marks on the rim. The avgolemono soup was thick, gloppy and gelatinous with a solid looking top. It tasted fine but the thick texture suggested multiple reheatings or soup that was sitting in the pot for too long. The moussaka was clearly reheated (or pre-plated hours ago and kept warm?) because the custard topping was stiff and dry. The meat filling was bland. The rice also had that reheated, dry look. We ordered the Piklia, which is an appetizer sampler, the Athenian Plate with lamb, and the avgolemono soup. The piklia had an assortment of hummus, baba ghanoush, tzatizki, feta, and scordalia (a mashed potato dip). Such a flavorful combo of appetizers! Each one was well-seasoned and had a delicious flavor and mouthfeel. I wasn't as crazy about the scordalia, which tasted like mashed potatoes + potato salad, but it was interesting nonetheless. The Athenian Plate had lamb souvlaki, kefte, dolmas, spanakopita, potatoes, and veggies. The lamb was succulent and cooked perfectly. The kefte was a great mixture of lamb/ beef. The dolmas and spanakopita had good flavor. The potatoes had a nice, savory taste to it, like it was cooked in chicken broth. Can't believe I haven't written a review yet for this place! It did take the pandemic before we even tried it. We've been missing out on great, traditional Greek food for over four years. Our loss. Now, we make Tantalus one of our regular rotations for take-out. They have fantastic vegetarian options including an appetizer sampler plate and an entree sampler plate. We recommend both, but if you can only go with one try the entree sampler. Excellent vegetarian moussaka, spanokopita, dolmas etc. Food is really well prepared. I would love to eat in at some point because the spanokopita does get a big soggy on the way home trapped in the container with all of the other food. It still tastes great, just loses the lovely texture. They have great options that aren't available at fast food Greek places. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I am so sad to write this review... Tantalus has been my favorite Greek restaurant for over a decade. My husband and I used to go so much that our favorite server (who sadly wasn't there tonight) had our order memorized down to substitutions and what wine I liked... All of those past good things are why I'm giving two stars instead of one. Today I walked in to pick up a to-go order. Three employees, none wearing masks, even though there is a current mask mandate. The guy who was about to hand me my food pulled his up after seeing the look on my face. Two men in the kitchen with no masks, one of them actively cooking/chopping veggies. I've lost young, healthy friends to Covid, and am immune compromised myself. I ordered to-go because I don't feel safe sitting in a restaurant, only to find that the person who cooked it has no respect for the health mandates. I still tipped 20%+ on a to-go order, not sure why, habit I suppose... But sadly, even after Covid, I will not be back. I don't trust anyone who doesn't listen to public health measures to make my food, and based on the fact that it was every employee, it seems systemic instead of a one-off experience. Sad. read more

Wasn't the most glamorous from the outside but it is pretty cozy once you're in this Greek restaurant. The service is very friendly and the furniture is comfortable. The taziki appetizer has plenty of taziki, but lacking in veggies (only one olive on the plate). The pita was warm and seemed fresh, though. The lentil soup was good but both main dishes that we got were very salty. The bathroom was out of soap. The main and only server/owner? told us it was going to be slow, so that's was fine as he advised us ahead of time. He was rushing when taking our orders or when dropped our foods, and asking for something was like he wanted to punch us! ( I feel bad for the helper he had there and the cooks!). What an awful service experience I had yesterday at a restaurant. The waiter, and I believe he is the owner of the establishment, was disrespectful, rude, unethical, which shocked me and my friends. I have never experienced anything like this in my entire life. His facial expression from the beginning of taking orders to the end when he brought the checks was so negative towards our group that we did not even know what to think. When I ordered a bottle of beer and he brought it, I told him that we would like to have separate checks, he rudely replied that he would work on it and angrily threw the bottle in the trash, that trash flew in all directions. Food was mediocre and expensive, ambiance was fine but smoky. My main complaint was that it took an hour for our food to arrive, even though the restaurant wasn't very full when we arrived. Our waiter never checked in on us, even though we were waiting with two young kids, and even when we hunted him down to ask about him how much longer it might be, he refused to give us any estimate. The Tantalus has been a part of Gilman Village for over 20 years serving traditional Greek cuisine! I came here for the first time on a Saturday around peak dinner time and surprisingly just a few tables were occupied. The Chicken Souvlaki ($15) seemed to be the go-to dish according to other Yelp reviews so I decided to give it a try. The portion was substantial, which included two hefty chicken skewers, a side of veggies and potato, pita bread and a cup of tzatziki. Unfortunately, the chicken turned out dry and lacked seasoning - I could taste a charred grill flavor, but that was about it. The tzatzki was necessary to liven it up. I also didn't really care for the potato side, which was too tart for my liking. The serving of veggies tasted great though - very fresh and lightly seasoned. Every entree included a complementary soup - either lemon or lentil. The lentil soup was very hearty and delicious, which was a great start to our meal. I tried a bite of the Lamb Souvlaki as well. MUCH better than the chicken! The lamb was very tender, cooked to a perfect medium and retained its natural gaminess. The prices are pretty reasonable with most entrees being between $13 - $16. Often, there's a deal for The Tantalus in the Entertainment coupon books...we used a coupon which was good for a 'buy one get one' entree up to $13. Service was pretty good - we were seated immediately, checked on during our meal, and our waitress was attentive and courteous. This restaurant has been known for their authentic Greek food, so maybe they were just having a bad day with the chicken...
