Great food options for snacking! Great wine options for drinking! Love the people there! Especially Mitch! I have enjoyed my visits there the few times I have gone! I love it! If you are ever wondering about the quality or taste of a bottle of wine (as a prior reviewer had mentioned) before spending money to "pour it down the drain" - there is a new FREE app called Vivino You just snap a pic of the bottle and it tells you right away what it tastes like, what it pairs with, what it rates, what other people said about it! read more

A quirky and difficult to find location that epitomizes Wisconsin. Is it a bar? Is it a liquor store? I have no clue but fell in love with the place anyway. read more

Fun eclectic atmosphere. Great wine & beer options. Great patio space on nice weather days. Hours can be inconsistent though so that limits our ability to go here. read more

I absolutely love it here. It so cozy and eclectic and so different to anything else offered in the area. The owner is so friendly and so caring for his customers. You really cannot beat the vibe here, I recommend it to so many people! read more

Met some colleagues after work for some drinks and poss a bite. Pretty cool vibe when you walk in, hip liquor store up front with a small bar area in the back. They only had a couple of beers on draft, but they were awesome. The bartender was pleasant and provided generous beer samples upon request. While I didn't have chow, a friend had the vegan plates and it looked fresh and tasty. Not too loud, conversation was easy to hear. read more

I cannot say enough kind words about this wine bar. The eclectic art collection and open-garage-door concept give the atmosphere a perfect Appleton/Lawerence touch. Sit at the bar if you want to mingle with the educated, interesting, wine tasting expert bar tenders. The only thing that would bring this place over the top would be to add wine flights to the menu. read more

Really great place with a great atmosphere BUT the last 3 times I tried going it said they were open on Facebook and when we got there they were closed. Normally businesses would update their status "closing early blah blah" nope nothing. It's extremely frustrating. I've tried showing this place off but it's not a good look when they do this. read more

Great live music! Excellent wine selection. Very comfortable seating and friendly service. read more

If you're in the general Fox Cities, McKnight and Carlson is gonna be your BEST bet for a good bottle of wine...trust me. First off, the staff is well-seasoned, unpretentious and knowledgeable. On the few occasions i've been there, they've had a killer selection of bottles in every single price range imaginable. Even better, they're selection spanned the globe and included off-beat varietals that only a connoisseur could have procured. All in all, I wouldn't bother going anywhere else in A-town. As well, many moons ago, I know they were developing a really solid craft beer selection. I trust it's only gotten better. read more

I feel the best way to post any review is to simply provide pros and cons and let you decide - Please note My family and I used to shop here when John was the owner and when it was Carlson /McKnight. At that time they offered reasonably priced wine. All of our friends and family have traveled throughout the world and are wine enthusiast but we are not wine experts. John made us feel comfortable asking questions and gave us great advice on wines to suit everyone's taste. 50% of what John carried was about $10 or less per bottle. 30% was around $15 per bottle and 20% was around $20 + bottle. He also had a separate section with higher end wines around $50 or more for special occasions and wine experts. With that being said, my husband and I stopped over to tandem and decided to check out the new store. Pros: since the new owners have taken over they have definitely made improvements to the interior of the store including a beautiful bar in the back and a comfortable sofa. It's wonderful to stop in and have a casual glass of wine instead of going to a bar on the Avenue. The crowd seems to be upscale and everyone is very nice. Both owners are also very nice and well versed in wines and spirits. They do offer a fantastic selection. The parking lot is huge and has direct access to the building. The location is fantastic directly off College Avenue between the downtown and the mall - about three minutes from Highway 41. They also offer several other goodies such as beer, chocolate, cheese, wine glasses and other great gift ideas! We do enjoy going there and will definitely go back! Cons : we noticed that the prices have changed since it was Carlson/ McKnight. Perhaps tandem has a different distributor. We noticed that about 10% of the wines are around $10 To $15 dollars, about 10% of the wines are about $15 to 22 dollars, and majority of the wines that they carry are 25 to 35+ dollars. I'm sorry but we are not wine experts and cannot see spending $25-$35 for a single bottle of wine that We may not like and end up pouring down the sink. A note from a wine expert - When John owned the wine bar he told us just because a bottle of wine is more expensive does not necessarily make it better. He pointed out the facts in distribution. He mentioned some are mass produced bringing the per bottle and case price down, other wines are not mass-produced and that cranks the price up. We tasted many wines when John was the owner and most of them were anywhere from eight to $12 per bottle. After all these years we were very accustomed to spending that on a quality bottle of wine. No we are not looking to spend more. Even though we will return to the new tandem because it's a fun upscale place we will also be shopping at other places in town that fit our needs and budget. Like I said all of our friends and family are wine enthusiast but none of our friends and family are wine experts! Best wishes to the new owners to a wonderful and successful business. We have always promoted and prefer to support local businesses! read more

I continue to love this place! Everyone that works here is really nice and accommodating. They have whiskeys, bourbon, beer, and wine by the glass. The selection of the whiskeys and wine are amazing both by the glass and full bottle. This is a great place to come and relax with friends. They also have light bites to go with what your drinking. Some Fridays and Saturdays they have live music. read more

This place is phenomenal. I had a small going away party here tonight and George was nothing more than exquisite . He was extremely accommodating to my friends and I and made us feel welcome in his lounge/bar. I know tandem has gone through some changes and I am delightful to see where it has become. if I wasn't moving out of town this would be my go to wine place. Thank you George for an amazing evening read more

Great place to taste and hang out for wine. Lovely little bar at the back that beckons for a quick sip. George is knowledgeable and incredibly accommodating, truly a pro! Wonderful place to learn more about wine! read more

I love this place! Friendly owner, George, great selections of wine and great vibe. This is a great place to go on a first date.

This place is great such a cool location it is exactly what Appleton needs in the nightlife scene love it love it love it

This is clearly the best place to buy wine in the area. John Carlson is practically always in the shop. He knows every bottle on the shelf and is very interested in helping you to find what you like. Selection is excellent, as are prices and - above all - service. Don't miss the informative and enjoyable tastings on Thursday evenings! read more

Great atmosphere and experience at Tandem. They have a vast variety of wines from around the world and the selections we had for our tastings were all great! The staff isn't well versed on the wines, but are still very friendly. The cheese plate was a big ripoff. Overall, we'd definitely return in the future. read more

We arrived at Tandem for a couple of bottles of wine upon our arrival from Northern California to the Fox Valley. We were immediately stunned and felt like we had walked into a high end wine and beer tasting room in Napa or Sonoma. The selections here were amazing and the tasting area made us want to ditch our family plans and nestle into a full night of tastings (that would've been too impolite of us, so we didn't). The service was excellent and the staff was more than willing to help us find the right beers and wines for our Christmas plans. Tandem is a spectacular gem if you are a beer or wine connoisseur!! read more

Tandem is hands down my (and my husband's) favorite place to enjoy a glass of wine, a pint of beer or, if we are up to it, some spirits - a unique cocktail that most likely George concocted that day. The wine selection is superb as well as reasonable in price, George and Ana are wonderful owners, and they picked an impeccable staff. The only disappointment on our end is that we didn't find this place sooner! read more

I saw the modest rating M&C got on Yelp and decided to join in the hope that the true quality of this wonderful place would be better represented. It is our "go to" wine store. We get great advice and enjoy the terrific, informative Thursday wine tastings. As an example of what you can expect, a little over a year ago a friend drove into town for a visit. On the way in, he stopped at M&C to purchase some wine for us. In the course of asking for a recommendation, he told John he was visiting us. John then recommended some very excellent wines that he was "confident" we would like. He was right of course. I don't think you can do better in Appleton. read more

This is a great atmosphere and the staff is always friendly. I enjoy their wine selection as they always have my favorites where other places don't. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is that the beer is usually expired. I have become better at checking the "best by dates" and the "made on dates" and checking with the makers how long past that date they are good by while I'm in the store. Recently I stopped in and purchased a couple different 6 packs for my husband to try. He had a tough week and I wanted to treat him. Anyway, I didn't check the dates. He noticed they were several months past their dates. I spent just over $30 on 12 bottles. Great place to purchase wine, chat with some fun people. I just wont be purchasing beer there. read more

I was in search of a new-to-me wine, and after a quick google search, came across this little gem. I am by no means a wine connoisseur, but it appears that Tandem offers a good selection of wines, spirits, and even beers! My husband was super pleased with their beer selection and found a few new beers to come back and try! We were asked what brought us in the shop and after telling them we were new to Tandem, we were given the low down on happy hour, the bar in the back, wine tastings and even their punch card. We really enjoyed the vibe of the place, not stuffy or pretentious at all! We'll definitely go back! Just wish we found this place sooner! read more

This is a great spot! Reminds me very much of European wine shops - but with beer and liquor besides. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff, plus a great bar in the back of the store during all business hours. Food trucks there on weekends, plus special tasting events. Do yourself a favor and stop by! read more
