Tamashii Ramen is a place that I go to whenever I feel the craving for Japanese classics. It's got solid flavors for a good price and tasty apps. Firstly, I'd always recommend getting the Shoyu or Tamashii Ramen, unless you really prefer some other kind. In my opinion, these are the best. I've also had some other things from here, like the pork buns, takoyaki, Eel on rice, and curry. Would recommend- the Ramen, Pork Buns, Kaarage. Solid - Eel on Rice, pork katsu, takoyaki. Good for a meal but I would recommend other things first. Kinda disappointing - curry. Just tastes like regular curry that you can make at home. This spot has been on my list for some time and I finally tried it. It's a cute and quaint spot that does get busy so there may be a wait depending on when you go. They have a sizeable menu with great apps, vegetables ramen, and tsukemen among other dishes. We tried their Chasyu Ramen, which comes with extra chasyu, and their Kara Miso Ramen. The Chasyu broth was light and the taste was subtle so I ended up adding pepper flakes. It was delicious but wasn't anything that made me gasp. The Kara Miso Ramen was better and I enjoyed the spicy taste of it. We also tried their Pork Buns, which were yummy and had a nice smokey taste. We had Lucky Chicken, a Japanese beer that's a red IPA that we both enjoyed. Overall, this is a nice spot for ramen that offers vegetarian options as well as other dishes, and is worth a visit if you're in the area and craving ramen. Came here on a cold day for some ramen on a Sunday afternoon. The inside was cozy and the staff were super welcoming. I decided to get the miso ramen which came with veggies, chasu, and ground pork. The ramen soup was thick and a little more salty than I like. The noodles were nice and al dente but I wish I got some more meat. The chasu slices I did have were pretty tender and flavorful. I think this place might have the best ramen in all of Queens. We got there just when they opened and were seated by the bench tables. They also have stool style seating and asked customers which they preferred. We ordered the ika karaage (squid), champon ramen (non spicy) and miso ramen. The ika karaage was freshly fried and came on a bed of salad (lettuce, red onions) which was a first but it was a good palette cleanser before we moved onto the ramen. It also came with two dipping sauces: honey mustard (maybe?) and caesar salad sauce. I had my eye on the champon ramen but wasn't sure if I could handle the spice level. Luckily the staff were able to make a non spicy version. The soup flavor of my ramen was so light (reminiscent of tonkotsu) that I could've drank it all (though I probably shouldn't). There were 2 mussels, regular sized shrimp, mini shrimp and a few pieces of octopus. Plentiful of ramen noodles at the bottom. It was definitely a very filling meal. I also tried some soup from the miso ramen and it was quite saltier in taste compared to the light flavor of the champon soup. Service was great as the staff were always refilling our water cups (with the prettiest rainbow glass pitcher) and clearing empty dishes from the table. Their bathroom was impeccably clean and I think it's the first time I've seen an air conditioner inside of one! I got the Buta ramen which looked simple on the wall photo but was a rich gingery broth with al dente noodles, Chasyu, toppings and ground pork (settled at the bottom). Champon had a clear light broth but the spice comes at the end of a spoonful - with seafood. The pork buns are filled with a couple slices of Chasyu- were good. To be honest, I stumbled on this ramen place and was soooo happy I found it. The first time I came in was after shopping at Sephora & was craving my favorite Food ever which is called "ikura". They had this bowl called "ikura don" and it means fish roe with rice. The first time I came, the waiter was very nice but dismissive (because it got busy). I understand if you're busy, just don't be rude to me.... The second time I came in I ordered Kurobota sausage and finally tried the ramen & it was pretty damn good ! An awesome ramen going in Forest Hills. 100% better than kyuramen if you can get a spot. The Tako Wasabi was the real stuff and hits hard with a great Wasabi kick. The karaage was probably second to the karaage from this bar I've went to a few times in Japan, and I'm someone who orders karaage whenever I see it on the menu. So this means the karaage is good, especially when paired with the two sauces it came with! The side salad is also a good complement if you drizzle it with lemon juice. The takoyaki is good as well. However, I'm not someone who frequently eats takoyaki, so I'm not the best judge here. The ramen noodles were chewy, but the broth and the noodles weren't standout. The toppings were super generous though and the portion was huge, especially for ramen under $16. It truly pains me to write this, as I've been a longtime fan of Tamashii's Astoria location. After a 30-minute wait (which we didn't mind since it's small and popular), things went downhill fast. A couple seated after us ordered, ate, and almost finished their meal before we even got water - 15-20 minutes of being completely ignored. When we flagged a different waiter, our server returned with an annoyed attitude and barely engaged with us after that. No check-ins, no hospitality. We were so uncomfortable, we didn't dare ask for anything else. There were 3 servers on the floor which makes it hard for us to excuse the poor service we received. The food was still great, but service was a solid 1 star. We tipped 18% out of courtesy, but they seriously need to step up their game. I mean it has two kinds of shrimp, octopus, mussels, squid and lots of veggies. It was phenomenal on this cold day and the broth was really flavorful. Surprisingly the veggie broth has even more flavor than the last broth I chose, it deserves a second mention. You really won't be disappointed, but keep in mind this is their spiciest broth option. Be ready with extra napkins. Service was fantastic, quickly seated, appetizer came quick and as I was 3/4 of the way done with the 3 shrimp tempura, out came the ramen in a nice large bowl. Beautiful red broth and so fragrant with seafood. It was love at first bite. The shrimp tempura was nice and crispy and very hot. Perfectly fresh and well prepared. Allow me to elaborate my previous review. It was a shame that I had to compare the ramen served here to Shin ramen, a more common known Korean brand to the fellow consumers. Perhaps a Japanese one instead like the instant Ichiran one in my pantry that was stocked from my recent trip to Japan. Of course one does not need to go to Japan to know the standard of a decent bowl of ramen because nyc has many decent ramen shops. I am also familiar of the long hours of slow simmering involved when it comes to making japanese ramen as it is a stable home cooked meal in my kitchen, oh and our noodles are made fresh as well. Regardless, the ramen bowl I was served at this establishment was no where close to the long hours rich broth that was described in the owner's reply.
