One of our absolute favorite spots in the neighborhood. At first, we'd just get snacks and some grocery essentials, but in the past year we've started getting more of the prepared food and oh my, were we missing out on that before. The chirashi and yellowtail bowls are so good, and incomparably priced! Same for the gyoza and onigiri. Everything tastes super homemade and fresh. They're constantly putting out new items as they're being made. We're so lucky to have such an authentic Japanese market in our neighborhood! ありがとうございます、Sakura Ya! read more

Really cute Japanese market with a mix of fresh, frozen, cooked and packaged snacks. I'm used to the big Japanese markets in LA this place packs in a lot of Japanese faves in a small space. I came with my nephew so he could get some snacks including oreos and kit kats you don't fine in your regular candy store. He loved the place. I love the place and the staff that run the place are friendly. read more

They've moved and this location is much better. The aisles are much easier to navigate. Their fresh section is vastly bigger and is more delicious than before. Along the right side of the store is all heaters to keep it fresh but they plenty of rice bowls with beef, chicken, pork and more. Like most Japanese markets they have an odds and ends section as well as well as the food products. I need to come here more often. Everyone is also always so polite here as well. read more

I don't know how, but we had such a hard time finding this shop. For anyone who will be going here for the first time, it's right next to SS Natural Market on Austin Street with King Wok in the corner. It's not every day that you have a family-run Japanese grocery store, so we went out of our way to stop here and we weren't disappointed. The shop is not as big as the market next door but the space is just big enough to house the variety of things they carry, from takeaway meals, bowl, and rice balls to produce to teas and side dishes. I'm not familiar with the cost of Japanese groceries so have little point of reference, but the teas we got were priced competitively. There's a minimum spend of $10 for a credit card payment, but the staff were patient and reasonably friendly. I can see us coming here regularly as locals. I hope they stay open for generations. read more

I came on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't crowded. There was fresh, hot food at great prices. Onigiri for $2.49 and Gyudon for $7.49. Sushi rolls from $5-7 with decent portions. They have a microwave to heat up food, but nowhere to sit. They have a kitchen in the back. They have bread and pastries besides typical Japanese ingredients and groceries. The Gyudon was a little salty but was overall good. I'll be back. read more

I love coming here for the prepared foods (and to check out all the Japanese goodies they have). The store is well stocked, and everything is pretty fresh. I see the staff restocking everything. The prices are fair. I usually get the onigiri. They have a wide variety at a great price. The rice holds together well and is packed with filling. My go to is the eel or tuna mayo. I have tried their poke bowl as well, which is well marinated and fresh. I have also gotten some of their hot foods (mostly the seafood - eel, makerel, salmon teriyaki), and the portion sizes are good. Definitely grab a few and try with other people. Bring your own bag! They do put the food in a plastic produce bag to prevent spilling into your bag. read more

I came to Austin Street to look around. Found Sakura-Ya and was curious. They have such a nice Selection of beautiful & dainty cookies! Individually wrapped inside the elegant gift box. Also great selection of hot foods! Friendly cashier. I wish they would carry my favorite Japanese tea: The Lupicia brand. read more

I love how convenient this Japanese market is! Located in Forest Hills, it has a bunch of prepared food, Japanese snacks, candy, and drinks. They also have a section for makeup. I loved getting lunch from here since it was already prepackaged and ready to go. The prices are also very affordable. The owners were really friendly as well. read more

We are so fortunate to have a japanese grocery store that also serves some hot food in our neighborhood Love love this place read more

This is my first time going to the new location. No longer local to forest hills so my visits are now far and few! The new location is much bigger and feels less claustrophobic! Still a great selection of Japanese snacks, dried and fresh foods. They have already made meals (bento boxes, onigiri, rice bowls) on the warmers, sushi rolls in the refrigerated section and fresh cuts of sushi grade salmon and tuna. What a gem! read more

All I can say is I really love this Japanese supermarket! The products were well priced and they have pretty much all the basic items that you're looking for when you're making a decent Japanese meal. The selections were good and the location is in a prime area too! read more

It's been long time since I left a review. They've renovated inside of the store. Hot foods, daily grocery Inc vegetables with decent price :) Japanese food and goods store. It's quite walking distance from train station but, there're many stores on way to get here. So you won't feel it's very far......... a store friendly and good vibes. There's a restroom to use. read more

It's so nice to see that they've expanded from their previous location. It's been a long time since I've visited this area in general. They have a good variety of Japanese products, but I think they're strongest aspect is their freshly in house made food. There were cold options like sushi, onigiris etc and also hot options like bento boxes. A microwave is located near the grab and go food area in case you want to heat it up. I am happy to say the onigiri prices were pretty inexpensive (under $3) compared to riceballs sold elsewhere and the sizes are normal size (not like the half sized riceballs which some places have started selling). read more

They moved to a bigger, brighter location so it's definitely not as cramped as before. They don't carry a huge selection and a lot of the products are highly processed and full of sodium but I was able to buy some organic "udon" noodles cheaper than Amazon or other Asian markets so that was great. Prices are better than okay. L chose some candies to try.. not healthy but there's rarely any candy in the house. He enjoyed them but I wouldn't want him to buy more. They do sell excellent brands of sushi rice, prices are reasonable. I did try a rice ball and it was okay. It got me through the rest of the day. read more

More space and brighter, compared to their previous location which was very tight. Still a small store so can find needs but not an extensive variety. There's a rewards card which can earn you $20 discount after 100 stamps (1 stamp per $10 purchase). Tip: if you forgot your rewards card, have your receipt stamped and bring it back the next time to be added to your card. Helpful staff. Have been enjoying the riceballs from here - less than $3 each. Seaweed wrapper is separate until ready to eat. Haven't tried their other cooked food items. read more

I went to visit this place once when it was tiny at its former location. Because it was tough to navigate with a stroller, we never went back even though we enjoyed the eel rice bowl. It was just too hard and tight to roam comfortably. Fast forward a few years, they changed location to a bigger and brighter space. I adore this store now. There's more space to walk and browse which means more time to look at each item and snag some cool things. I am a fan of how brightly lit it is and everything is well spaced out. Many choices to select from ranging from drinks to hot foods and rice balls (a favorite of our family) to snacks, desserts, home goods and beauty. My kids always have a blast coming here and picking a new item to try. Their tea selection is fun and I love the hojicha latte powder. Reasonable prices. The hot food prices are so worth it. I hope they bring more items to fill out the store. Definitely worth a visit. read more

If you're in Queens NY, or in Forrest Hills, stop by at Sakuraya, the Japanese grocery store. It's fairly a small place, but they've got roomful of Japanese products that you will be very satisfied! Their Bento lunch package is really good. Very reasonable and delicious. And lots of Japanese snacks that you almost thought that you're in Japan! read more

Great service and staff! Love the packaged food options and snacks! Highly recommend checking out

I stumbled upon this place while walking down Austin Street. This store has a variety of things to offer! From ready made food under heat lamps to snacks and even utensils/items needed for cooking. They do accept card but you much be at a 10$ min. Love the variety of cute and delicious snacks. Always like to pop in when passing bay to see what I can quickly grab or to put on my list for next time. read more

Saw this place mentioned on an instagram reel for cheap eats in Forest Hills hawking their sushi, so one day I decided to try them out before work. It's a small Asian grocery that sells sushi, poke bowls and teriyaki combos for take out. I can't wait to go back again - except I have no idea when I'll be back out towards Forest Hills since I started a new job that won't really be taking me out that way. read more

Updating since their move to the new location across the street - the store is bigger now and offers more ready-to-eat foods at reasonable prices. They have ready-to-eat foods (poke bowl, bento box, onigiri, katsu and ebi sandwich, sushi etc), a discounted items area, and refrigerated drinks near the front for ease of purchase if you need to buy a snack or meal. Desserts, snacks, tea bags, and instant soups can be found further in. They still have a small section for makeup, so this is more of a food market. read more

The food is ok and decent for Japanese take out I never pay attention of the prices and the bill in each week that we go this store. Somehow today i see the bill and got curious about $2.69 " non tax item " that we paid. And we paid for 8.875% tax at the end of bill too. Im really curious and don't feel right about this! Definitely gotta ask the store next week we go read more

Sakura Ya conveniently has some Asian grocery items harder to find in the area. This store is neat and clean, and the check out service is quick. The prices are reasonable. There's hot food for sale as well, which reminds me of the convenience stores I've been to in Asia. read more

Rice balls and sushi are very good. Service is fine and the ambiance is good when the lunch rush isn't on.

AH I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH , I've heard about them quite a few times and I always wanted to visit . Today I got the chance to visit and I tried one of their bowls , onigiri , salmon avocado roll , and their salmon sashimi fish . The fish was so fresh it tasted so good , for a decent small chunk of fish it was only $8.50 that was able to make 10-15 slices of salmon ,really affordable for people that want to curb that raw fish craving without having to spend about $15 -20 at a sushi restaurant for sashimi. Do go early as it seems like they got lots of customers in the morning from opening till 1 so you can get the food fresh Oh for sashimi fish , they also have tuna and it seems like they go by the pound so you can get a bigger chunk of fish for around 10 bucks , still a really great deal and can probably make more than 10 pcs with a bigger fish read more

Sakura Ya - Sashimi fish , no off coloring incredibly fresh for a small mom and pop shop - Grocery Near Me - Forest Hills, New York

Overpriced and rude cashiers. No one should pay that much for poke bowls. Nice spot for picking up groceries from Japan.

Love this place! They've moved location next to the supermarket (SS NATURAL). very close to their original location! I go here mainly for their onigiris and rice bowls on the weekends. I've ventured and tried many places onigiris and they were no way in comparison to here at Sakuraya! Something about their rice and mayo is different from other places! Plus their prices are the cheapest compared to others. which is probably why they sell out so quickly before 1PM! Their new location is much more roomier and brighter than before. Please give this local mom/pop store more welcomes! read more

Bright and clean little Market with a wide variety of Japanese items including prepackaged cooked food.

I can't tell you what made me ignore the beauty of Sakura Ya for so long... The moment is akin to having a long time friend and then seeing them as more than one then saying where have you been all my life? In other words, lots to love here.. Unfortunately, not the best layout for the COVID age since the aisles are tight, but packed with so many Japanese wants and necessities! I found the prices extremely reasonable as my friend and I start snagging various provisions - Bonito flakes, yakult, furikake, Hojicha Kit-Kats, Shin ramen, Mirin, a pint of black sesame ice cream and more. Actually it would have been even more if I felt comfortable browsing, but didn't want to dilly dally too much.. The onigiri and other cooked foods are delicious, and inexpensive. $6.99 for an unagi (eel) bowl that gives 3 nice size pieces on top of perfectly made rice.. (After I ate the eel I added some bonito flake and a touch of soy sauce to make Cat Rice). A nice filet of Salmon Teriyaki for $3.79. Vegetable dumplings for $3.29. My favorite Onigiri is the salmon and they brought out fresh ones from the back. The bento boxes looked delicious and probably grab one of these next time because my plan is to come back quite often! read more

So I been to this market a couple of times when they occupied a small store across the street on Austin Street next to the hair salon...it was kind of small and crowded, and didn't go there often because of that... Then C town closed across the street and the place was vacant for awhile...I was wondering and anticipating what was going to open...When I heard a Japanese grocery would happen I was excited cause I love Japanese food... The new spot is big and spacious with many snacks, condiments and the hot food bento boxes, sushi etc. We got chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura don, and salmon teriyaki. My mom didn't care for her chicken teriyaki cause she is a picky eater lolz. But I did enjoy my food, it was fresh and for the price it was very decent. read more

Neat Japanese market. My nearby spot for quick grab and go sushi was closed, so I popped in here. I don't see on Onigiri too often, so I opted for a couple of those. Awesome spot in Forest Hills - plus they just recently moved to a bigger location, so extra plus!! Cute little supermarket that carries many Japanese products and meals. Came here for the onigiri, but couldn't resist their eel over rice. They have so many hot food options you can grab and go, plus many snacks you can pick up for home or a cute picnic date. They even carry skin care and beauty items. I found one of the oil cleansers I get from Amazon here for a cheaper price!! Love going here. The workers are always welcoming and friendly. read more

Great small Japanese store to pick up any last minute ingredients or a small snack. They also have a small beauty section, with eyeliner and other small products. They provide gloves for anyone who wants and everyone is masked to ensure safety during COVID. In addition to their selection of groceries, they have a variety of hot dishes, such as shumai, gyudon, unagi bowls and gyoza. My favourite are the gyoza and gyudon. They also have an assortment of onigiri and other rolls. These are great as little snacks or for a more rushed lunch. My favourite onigiri flavors are the spicy shrimp tempura and the seaweed flavors. I grabbed some masago and tamago today, which they have in small portions -- perfect for our family of four! Their products are a bit pricey but it's a great place to stop by for any additional groceries you might be missing or items where you need smaller serving sizes. read more

One of my favorite places to shop for Asian groceries in Queens!! Very small and compact store, but it's not too difficult to navigate. They have frozen foods, Japanese snacks, kitchen accessories/supplies, and hot + cold food ready to eat/go!! Credit card minimum is $10, but you probably don't need to worry since you might end up grabbing more than your ordinary haul haha!
