They've moved and this location is much better. The aisles are much easier to navigate. Their fresh section is vastly bigger and is more delicious than before. Along the right side of the store is all heaters to keep it fresh but they plenty of rice bowls with beef, chicken, pork and more. Like most Japanese markets they have an odds and ends section as well as well as the food products. I need to come here more often. Everyone is also always so polite here as well. read more

I don't know how, but we had such a hard time finding this shop. For anyone who will be going here for the first time, it's right next to SS Natural Market on Austin Street with King Wok in the corner. It's not every day that you have a family-run Japanese grocery store, so we went out of our way to stop here and we weren't disappointed. The shop is not as big as the market next door but the space is just big enough to house the variety of things they carry, from takeaway meals, bowl, and rice balls to produce to teas and side dishes. I'm not familiar with the cost of Japanese groceries so have little point of reference, but the teas we got were priced competitively. There's a minimum spend of $10 for a credit card payment, but the staff were patient and reasonably friendly. I can see us coming here regularly as locals. I came on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't crowded. There was fresh, hot food at great prices. Onigiri for $2.49 and Gyudon for $7.49. Sushi rolls from $5-7 with decent portions. They have a microwave to heat up food, but nowhere to sit. They have a kitchen in the back. They have bread and pastries besides typical Japanese ingredients and groceries. I love coming here for the prepared foods (and to check out all the Japanese goodies they have). The store is well stocked, and everything is pretty fresh. I see the staff restocking everything. The prices are fair. I usually get the onigiri. They have a wide variety at a great price. The rice holds together well and is packed with filling. My go to is the eel or tuna mayo. I have tried their poke bowl as well, which is well marinated and fresh. I have also gotten some of their hot foods (mostly the seafood - eel, makerel, salmon teriyaki), and the portion sizes are good. Definitely grab a few and try with other people. Bring your own bag! They do put the food in a plastic produce bag to prevent spilling into your bag. read more

I love how convenient this Japanese market is! Located in Forest Hills, it has a bunch of prepared food, Japanese snacks, candy, and drinks. They also have a section for makeup. This is my first time going to the new location. No longer local to forest hills so my visits are now far and few! The new location is much bigger and feels less claustrophobic! Still a great selection of Japanese snacks, dried and fresh foods. They have already made meals (bento boxes, onigiri, rice bowls) on the warmers, sushi rolls in the refrigerated section and fresh cuts of sushi grade salmon and tuna. What a gem! read more

It's so nice to see that they've expanded from their previous location. It's been a long time since I've visited this area in general. They have a good variety of Japanese products, but I think they're strongest aspect is their freshly in house made food. There were cold options like sushi, onigiris etc and also hot options like bento boxes. A microwave is located near the grab and go food area in case you want to heat it up. I am happy to say the onigiri prices were pretty inexpensive (under $3) compared to riceballs sold elsewhere and the sizes are normal size (not like the half sized riceballs which some places have started selling). read more

They moved to a bigger, brighter location so it's definitely not as cramped as before. They don't carry a huge selection and a lot of the products are highly processed and full of sodium but I was able to buy some organic "udon" noodles cheaper than Amazon or other Asian markets so that was great. Prices are better than okay. L chose some candies to try.. not healthy but there's rarely any candy in the house. He enjoyed them but I wouldn't want him to buy more. They do sell excellent brands of sushi rice, prices are reasonable. I did try a rice ball and it was okay. It got me through the rest of the day. read more

There's a rewards card which can earn you $20 discount after 100 stamps (1 stamp per $10 purchase). Tip: if you forgot your rewards card, have your receipt stamped and bring it back the next time to be added to your card. Helpful staff. I went to visit this place once when it was tiny at its former location. Because it was tough to navigate with a stroller, we never went back even though we enjoyed the eel rice bowl. It was just too hard and tight to roam comfortably. Fast forward a few years, they changed location to a bigger and brighter space. I adore this store now. There's more space to walk and browse which means more time to look at each item and snag some cool things. I am a fan of how brightly lit it is and everything is well spaced out. Many choices to select from ranging from drinks to hot foods and rice balls (a favorite of our family) to snacks, desserts, home goods and beauty. My kids always have a blast coming here and picking a new item to try. Their tea selection is fun and I love the hojicha latte powder. Reasonable prices. The hot food prices are so worth it. Sakura Ya conveniently has some Asian grocery items harder to find in the area. This store is neat and clean, and the check out service is quick. The prices are reasonable. There's hot food for sale as well, which reminds me of the convenience stores I've been to in Asia. read more

AH I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH , I've heard about them quite a few times and I always wanted to visit . Today I got the chance to visit and I tried one of their bowls , onigiri , salmon avocado roll , and their salmon sashimi fish . The fish was so fresh it tasted so good , for a decent small chunk of fish it was only $8.50 that was able to make 10-15 slices of salmon ,really affordable for people that want to curb that raw fish craving without having to spend about $15 -20 at a sushi restaurant for sashimi. Do go early as it seems like they got lots of customers in the morning from opening till 1 so you can get the food fresh Oh for sashimi fish , they also have tuna and it seems like they go by the pound so you can get a bigger chunk of fish for around 10 bucks , still a really great deal and can probably make more than 10 pcs with a bigger fish read more

Love this place! They've moved location next to the supermarket (SS NATURAL). very close to their original location! I go here mainly for their onigiris and rice bowls on the weekends. I've ventured and tried many places onigiris and they were no way in comparison to here at Sakuraya! Something about their rice and mayo is different from other places! Plus their prices are the cheapest compared to others. which is probably why they sell out so quickly before 1PM! Their new location is much more roomier and brighter than before. So I been to this market a couple of times when they occupied a small store across the street on Austin Street next to the hair salon...it was kind of small and crowded, and didn't go there often because of that... Then C town closed across the street and the place was vacant for awhile...I was wondering and anticipating what was going to open...When I heard a Japanese grocery would happen I was excited cause I love Japanese food... The new spot is big and spacious with many snacks, condiments and the hot food bento boxes, sushi etc. We got chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura don, and salmon teriyaki. My mom didn't care for her chicken teriyaki cause she is a picky eater lolz. But I did enjoy my food, it was fresh and for the price it was very decent. read more

I can't tell you what made me ignore the beauty of Sakura Ya for so long... The moment is akin to having a long time friend and then seeing them as more than one then saying where have you been all my life? In other words, lots to love here.. Unfortunately, not the best layout for the COVID age since the aisles are tight, but packed with so many Japanese wants and necessities! I found the prices extremely reasonable as my friend and I start snagging various provisions - Bonito flakes, yakult, furikake, Hojicha Kit-Kats, Shin ramen, Mirin, a pint of black sesame ice cream and more. Actually it would have been even more if I felt comfortable browsing, but didn't want to dilly dally too much.. The onigiri and other cooked foods are delicious, and inexpensive. $6.99 for an unagi (eel) bowl that gives 3 nice size pieces on top of perfectly made rice.. (After I ate the eel I added some bonito flake and a touch of soy sauce to make Cat Rice). A nice filet of Salmon Teriyaki for $3.79. Vegetable dumplings for $3.29. My favorite Onigiri is the salmon and they brought out fresh ones from the back. The bento boxes looked delicious and probably grab one of these next time because my plan is to come back quite often! read more

Great small Japanese store to pick up any last minute ingredients or a small snack. They also have a small beauty section, with eyeliner and other small products. They provide gloves for anyone who wants and everyone is masked to ensure safety during COVID. In addition to their selection of groceries, they have a variety of hot dishes, such as shumai, gyudon, unagi bowls and gyoza. My favourite are the gyoza and gyudon. They also have an assortment of onigiri and other rolls. These are great as little snacks or for a more rushed lunch. My favourite onigiri flavors are the spicy shrimp tempura and the seaweed flavors. I grabbed some masago and tamago today, which they have in small portions -- perfect for our family of four! I was very happy each time I went to Sakura-ya when in Queens. I was able to get great Japanese prepared meals as well as ingredients for when I would cook at home. At that time they also had Japanese video rental but I doubt they have it now. For me each time going there was a taste of home. Now that I am back in Tokyo I remember all the great Japanese businesses that I used to go to when I lived in New York City.
