The General store has the sweetest husband and wife team running it. They do remind me of Mr. and Mrs. Claus! So friendly, kind, helpful, and sweet! I wouldn't hesitate to shop at this store instead of having to drive 20 miles or so down the mountain to get our needs. After visiting Calaveras Big Trees State Park on a colder Monday in October, we made a stop at their deli because we remembered eating a sandwich there 10 years ago or so. Our memory served us well as the Giant Sequoia sandwich was fabulous: Dutch Crunch bread, bacon, avacado, turkey, lettuce, tomato, and more. The service was quick and the sandwich was great. I needed one more thing from produce so I hurried- another announcement at 7:02 said to "stop shopping- we are closed" I grabbed my last item and went up front. By 7:03, I was already being checked out. And yet the reaction from staff was... unbelievable. There were several employees standing at the front just staring at me--clearly irritated, like I'd personally ruined their evening. It was three minutes past closing. Not 30. Not 15. Three. Then it somehow got worse. They were out of bags (understandable), so I asked if I could use the hand basket to carry my items to my car, which was literally parked right in front of the doors to the store. I was told no, "these baskets cant leave the store"--and that I needed to go outside and get a cart instead. So I had to run out, grab a cart, and come back in... while the entire staff stood there watching me. There must have been 6 or 7 employees glaring at me with dirty looks like I had insulted them personally. The older checker was grumpy and rude, but honestly the whole team contributed to making the experience feel hostile and unwelcoming. I completely understand wanting to close on time. But if ringing someone up at 7:03 feels like a crisis to your staff, that's a management issue--not a customer problem. Also- why not sell reusable bags if you run out of bags so often? I would have bought one to make it faster for me to exit the store. Seems like a simple solution to avoid the extreme stress your staff is experiencing
