TAMALI'I IS THE PLACE FOR YOU.
I've known Aunty Yolanda for a number of years now. I danced in her group, Tamali'i, when they were still in California and took a long break due to life (We all know how that goes...) Anyway, when I moved to Washington in 2015, I was ready to go back to dancing, but struggled to find a place up here that could give me the kind of training, mentorship and knowledge that I'd been accustomed to when I danced in California. I tried out another local group for a few months and later decided to leave when I found out that Aunty moved to Washington and was starting up Tamali'i here. While the group in California was huge, here in Washington, it is still brand-new and growing. But even in its growth stage, it is the best time to be a part of it because of the knowledge and training she is giving us.The unique thing about Aunty and the group in general, is not only are you learning the dance but you learn the roots of the dance. She comes with such a wealth of experience and knowledge and is so open to sharing it with her students. She breaks things down in a way that opens up your mind beyond the dance itself and grows your love and knowledge for the culture, its history and its people. She pushes her students to be the best that they can be, or actually, to the best that SHE KNOWS they can be, which oftentimes is more than some students think of themselves. She instills great confidence, pride, discipline and RESPECT into her students, and takes great care to let them know that she is MORE than just their teacher. Moreover, she doesn't just stick to one island. Her goal is for us to be well-rounded, so we learn everything from Hula to Tahitian to Samoan Siva to Maori, which includes dance, music and language. Apart from the amazing experience I've had learning from her and being a part of this group, Tamali'i is a force to be reckoned with. They are very well-respected and decorated within the Polynesian dance community and I am so excited that they are now here in Washington. read more
