The khao soi is just meh. Given that this is from a Local Kitchens location it's fairly expected. Don't think I'd order again.

This is a great spot for Marin!…read more I haven't really dabbled into trying thai and lao food as much, but my friend took me here and she's been here a handful of times! Located in downtown San Rafael, there is street parking and parking areas that are meter paid. We came in at 12 ish on a Monday and ordered right away. It wasn't busy but as soon as our food came out the restaurant was filled! We got: 1. Lao papaya salad 2. Lao sausage 3. Khao Piak - chicken 4. Khao Poon Lao papaya salad was amazing! I am used to eating more umami flavored, stinky shrimp paste dishes so it was extra delicious. Flavor was everything and I liked how it was served with a side of cabbage. As for the lao sausage, this could be eaten with rice but pairing it with freshly steamed veggies is even better. Get your fiber in! The sauce paired with this appetizer is nice as well. As for the Khao Piak, it was my first time trying something like this. The tapioca noodles were super chewy and long! I believe this was made fresh in house, and we should have asked for scissors because the pieces were so long. They remind me of the noodles that are used for banh canh. The soup was flavorful and not watered down. Perfect because we were both a bit sick. Lastly I have never tried Khao Poon and heard many great things! I am so glad I tried it because I am a coconut flavor lover for everything (but candies). The coconut soup base was rich, and the noodles, and garnishments were separate. I didn't mind because we didn't end up finishing everything anyways. We actually ordered way too much for 2 girls. Anyways, this was my absolute favorite from Laos Kitchen. Overall I would like to try more new items here next time I'm in the area. I did see a lot of people order more Thai food such as pad thai and the spring rolls. Maybe I'll get the nam khao and the tom yum soup in the future! Thanks so much Laos Kitchen! Check out my foodie instagram/tiktok for my video about this place: @sarah.nomnoms

I really want to give this place 4 or 5 stars because the food can be quite good, and the outside…read moreseating is lovely (when weather permits). The papaya salad, and the tofu satay are our favorites. The main entrees are so so, and I agree with other reviews saying the flavors sometimes are bland and not seasoned authentically. The real problem, though, is that the employees are just plain mean. I mean straight up like you are bothering them if you ask for anything. And, like another person said in their review, they literally throw the plates on your table and walk away. This has happened to us with multiple servers. They don't ask if you need anything else or how is everything ...they literally do a drive by to drop the food and keep going. I have seen servers drop off food to a table with a smile, and then the moment they turn their head from the seated party, they roll their eyes and rush back to the kitchen. It feels kind of cringe, you know, to feel like these people hate us. So weird. Last night, I wanted to ask that the seasonings were for the tofu satay. and I had to flag down a server, to which he seemed like I was bothering him with my question. I tried to warm him up by sharing how much we like that dish. He did a quick smile, then took a deep, exasperated breath as he turned and rushed off immediately after answering the question. There is no warmth here. I get that they are busy, but this is something I haven't experienced anywhere else, and to this degree. Yikes.

Mamahuhu is a fresh take on Chinese food…read more I ordered the broccoli beef with jasmine rice and although they were out of the drink I wanted, they did have plain sparkling water. The space doesn't have much outside seating (a single table) but there's plenty of seating over by the cafe down the street, so definitely consider getting your food to-go and eating at the picnic tables if you prefer sitting outdoors. Overall, the service was helpful and prompt and the food was delicious. We loved our meal and would absolutely stop by again!

We've been wanting to try Mamahuhu and so glad we made the trip to Mill Valley to do so…read more We ordered the Mushroom Mapo Tofu, Sweet & Sour Chicken (the standout dish!), and Jade Fried Rice, and every dish impressed. The Sweet & Sour Chicken was the highlight--perfectly crispy with a glossy sauce that struck a great balance between sweet and tangy. The addition of pineapple, bell peppers, and onions kept every bite fresh without overpowering the chicken. The Mushroom Mapo Tofu was rich, deeply savory, and packed with silky tofu in a beautifully spicy, numbing sauce. The mushrooms added great texture, and the generous sprinkle of crispy black beans and scallions on top made it even better. The Jade Fried Rice was a great supporting dish--light, flavorful, and studded with egg, greens, and bits of meat without feeling greasy. The portions were generous and perfect for two people to share. They also offer rice plate combinations, but we opted for individual entrées and were glad we did since it let us try more dishes. The restaurant itself is casual, cute, and very clean, making it a comfortable spot for lunch or dinner. Excellent food, generous portions, and a welcoming atmosphere--we'll definitely be back.
