We played as the second of four groups last friday and were RUSHED through a 5 minute soundcheck. after which I could not hear anything and my guitar had constant feedback. The sound dude had NO idea what he was doing and refused to fix the problem. shortly after or last song I threw my guitar and walked off stage. Originally opened in 1934, the Blue Moon carries the kind of atmosphere you cannot recreate -- walls covered in decades of music, art, stickers, photographs, and stories. A dimly lit room packed with musicians, writers, artists, and people who genuinely appreciate creativity in its raw form. Throughout the night, the stage moved between live music, poetry, and performances from local artists while the crowd filled the tavern from the bar to the stage floor. Places like this remind me why independent art still matters. As an author traveling all over the United States -- and as someone who lived in the Seattle area for 2 1/2 years -- standing on that stage reading poetry from Purple Rose in a venue with this much history behind it was really something special. What I loved most was how welcoming the environment was. This is a very LGBTQ-friendly, art-friendly space where people genuinely support one another. If you are brand new to open mics or nervous about sharing your work for the first time, this is the kind of place where you will absolutely be shown kindness and encouragement. There were so many talented musicians, poets, and performers there, and you could really feel the appreciation for creativity throughout the room. The setup of the tavern itself is awesome. The stage and seating area wrap around the bar in almost a U-shape, so you can really choose your own vibe for the night. If you want to stay close to the performances and music, there is a dance floor and table area near the stage. If you want something more relaxed, you can hang back near the bar, have a drink, and still enjoy the atmosphere without being directly in the middle of everything. They also have a full bar, arcade games, board games, books to read, and even a small library on the shelves throughout the tavern. Somewhere inside, you may even find a signed copy of Purple Rose that I left hidden and dedicated to the historic Blue Moon itself. Beautiful evening with wonderful people. I, my wife, and her friend stopped by for New Year's Drinks around 6, and about 6:30 or so, made the mistake of asking Tim Duvall, the clearly drunken before 7:00 PM owner of the establishment, whether outside food can be brought into the bar. This led to his regaling us with an extended and utterly unsolicited history of the bar. He then invited himself to sit with us, halfway into the seat before slurring a "Can I sit down?" to insert himself into our booth. We then moved to another unsolicited conversation, this time about politics. Now, to be clear - I have no doubt that I and a sober Tim Duvall probably agree on most of our politics. This did not stop him from berating me as I agreed with his point, loudly escalating and yelling as I tried to agree with him (again... to be clear, I DIDN'T disagree his political view) until he stood and began yelling that I was kicked out. As I stood to talk on him, he became VERY comfortable with putting his hands on me, grabbing my sweatshirt to move me. I was NOT about to challenge that as a Black man new to Seattle that doesn't know how the police would handle things. I need to be very specific about how quickly this man felt comfortable touching me, grabbing my sweater to "drag" me. This is the step that is WAY over the line. I would genuinely like to recommend this place, as I'm looking for bars that offer sugar cane soda. Drunken ownership- in the early evening in New Year's - that feels comfortable being handsy with Black folk is far too much. AVOID at all costs.

We had a reserved table, and the food was pretty good. It wasn't just bar food, but they 'had decent salads and a nice variety to choose from on their menu. The waitress was pleasant and served without being intrusive during the show. The Royal Room is really nice on the inside. They do a lot of swing and jazz there, but it's a pretty small venue. I'ld call it more comfortable than quaint. Parking was a total pita, but the sound mixer was on point and the music was clear for every instrument with nothing over-riding anything else unnecessarily.

One process improvement since I last came for a show here is that instead of having the host check…read moreevery person in and then lead them to their seat (if reserved), they now put up name placards on the tables and let you find your own seat so the host can keep checking people in. This makes the queue run MUCH more efficiently. However, overall this place has actually gotten worse since my last review. Now, if you make a reservation (necessary for guaranteeing a chair) for only 1 person, they seat you at a high top that faces AWAY from the stage. As in, literally your back is towards the stage. If you rotate your chair, you face an aisle between you and the stage. The aisle is supposed to remain clear, but there is no real way for the staff to keep the area clear from standing-room-only attendees other than nicely asking people to move, with varying success. The venue's suggested solution is a small bench to the side of the stage, which they say you're welcome to move to if you can't see. Problem is, it seats 4-5 people max (fewer if anyone is manspreading) and is open to anyone in the room. The tables are moveable, so at minimum the venue could point them towards the stage. Fwiw none of this is the restaurant /barstaff 's fault. If anything, they seemed to agree that this is not a good setup. (Don't want to go into specifics to avoid getting any employees into trouble) A second issue with the seating is that once you sit down, the staff removes the reservation cards. This means that if you're at one of the high tops, walk in guests will ask you to trade/move spots. Don't agree to move unless you're ok with possibly ending up with no seat at all because it may be that you end up sitting in a seat that was actually reserved by a different person, from which you will be removed when they arrive. It's then up to the person with whom you traded whether or not they're feeling charitable enough to cede back your original seat. Other than the seating problems, I'd give this a 3/5 for acoustics and sound design (accounting for the fact that it's a small converted venue) and a 4/5 for the food (actually pretty good considering that it's a captive audience) TL;DR: Don't bother coming here as a single person unless you completely don't care about the artist at all, or you love the artist so much that you're willing to do anything to see them

The space is small, has a grand piano (Yamaha if I remember correctly) and a dedicated audience. Though it's not for everyone, it's one of the only places in Seattle that offers experimental, progressive, non-main-stream music and musicians. We played some board games that they had on hand and got a nice buzz on. The venue was spacious but intimate, perfect for a cover band. The sound quality was outstanding and the space was clean. The bathrooms were nearby and there were enough to use without having to stand in line, which was nice. The drinks were expensive and therefore it loses a star. I hate being fleeced on drinks after paying a high amount to get into a concert. The bartenders were nice as were the security personnel. Parking is kind of a pain as you have to pay to park in a parking garage or drive around trying to find on street parking, which is nearly impossible. Loved the vibe on the street after the concert. Lots of food vendors, music, and fun people hanging about. We would definitely come back to this venue.

There were different spots to hang depending on your vibes whether the side room, bar, tables or the dance floor. It got pretty packed and there was one big fan in front but we couldn't feel it on the side so it was muggy. Drinks were very light but thankfully we got a drink ticket. I was pretty disappointed in the photo booth because we spent $9.50 for the thing to be broken, there was no sign either so no refund, I plan on calling them but still, don't waste your time or money.
