Taj is the best food in the Farnam/Blackstone district. They are so good that I downloaded this app to give this review. They are always quick and very accommodating. They also always treat you the best even to those who have been bar hopping all night!

Recently, we were trying to go to Rookie's Bar for a quick bite, but it must have been thirsty Thursday because they were PACKED. But who was right next door and reminded us how great they were? Mediterranean Bistro! First off, the decor is pretty cute. There are flowers and art everywhere. There was a fountain at some point, but it looks like it wasn't working anymore. We don't come to a restaurant simply for the decor though, so on to the more important things - the service and food! Our server was wonderful and checked on us so much. The owner was even there when we were dining and we got to speak with her (she was so nice!) They have great quality foods too that are filling but not too heavy. We started with the vegetarian lavosh, which was YUM. It was a perfectly crispy bread with cheese melted on it, and topped with tomatoes, black and green olives, artichokes, and cilantro. Very tasty and it didn't need any meat on it, it was so flavorful. Next we had the falafel with hummus (I recently went flexitarian, so 90% vegetarian), and it was divine as falafel goes! Crispy outside and soft warm inside, with lots of tzatziki sauce for dipping. Great snack, or meal if paired with another small item. And pair with it, I did. I also got the barley soup in a cup and it was warm and filling, like a soup that would be perfect for a chilly Fall day. My husband had the shish kabob, which he loved. He had been annoyed at the Rookies situation but the lavish put him righ back in a good mood. And for dessert, we had both the tiramisu and baklava. Both were expertly made and deliciously sweet. We took most of those home and ate them over the next few days. Love when you can do that. With a smattering of many different items, I can honestly say this dining experience was great from beginning to end!

My beef salad tasted amazing! I was surprised at how good the flavor of the dressing was on the salad, and although it was a pretty simple salad, it was definitely a large and filling enough meal for me with the amount of beef that came on top. I also got the extra grilled vegetables, and these were delicious! Kind of a surprise to see it. It was just one large piece of each vegetable, but it was still plenty of food, and worth the charge for me. The environment is pretty simple in plain, definitely feels like a hole in the wall spot. The restroom is past the kitchen, so you get a good view into the front of house and back of house stations. Overall, this was a great meal, although just a little too pricey in my opinion. My total is $28 for this meal (no drink), which included the tip (they write it in for you.)

Quickly noticed that their prices for falafel are $6 for 3pcs or $9 for 4pcs, which doesn't make any sense to pay more per falafel by ordering one more. I asked if they were larger sized falafel or anything and was told it was a pricing error they would fix eventually. Months later, the price remains the same. Their chili crisp add-on for the spreads was also posted in the menu as $1 but was charged as $2 when the bill arrived. It's a super fun environment and space, the staff was great, and everything is very delicious, but I can't trust their prices and bills to make sense without having to check it. Even the happy hour prices felt expensive for what we got.

However, I came seeking something that was both fresh and local as well as ethnically and culturally distinctive, and it was a winner. The menu is marked for vegan and gluten-free concerns. Falafel is available as a platter, a wrap, or a salad. I opted for a salad. I appreciated the toppings, but I also appreciated the ability to customize. I opted to stick with everything (since they don't do cucumbers like a lot of places) and found the chickpea and carrot salad and red cabbage to contribute a significant texture and flavor variety. There were only two falafel balls, albeit large ones, but the overall result made for a nice light meal. I made it a bit heavier of course by ordering fries, which were made freshly and tossed in curry-flavored spice that delivered a mouthwatering aroma that elevated the fries themselves. A little slotted stick was given as a utensil to pick up the fries, which I started by using and then stopped when the fries cooled down. Overall, I could not ask for much more in a falafel place. The drink selection didn't wow me, so I just got a water.

I was very tempted by one of their pastries, but I just decided to have the latte until I could decide what I wanted to eat for breakfast. Everyone was so nice and even brought a carafe of water to my table, since I was hobbling around with a cane (I'm waiting for my hip surgery). I was so delighted to see a beautifully decorated latte; in a simple white shallow mug, delivered direct to my table. I ended up ordering a light breakfast...one egg over medium, and some sourdough toast, with butter and their lovely jam. Everything was done perfectly, and the jam was divine. I will definitely be back again and next time I want to try some of their delectable baked goods with my latte.

This place taught me a thing or two about vegetables, which delighted all of our senses, and I highly recommend trying a variety of their small plates. This is worth a few minute detour. If you live here, well then, lucky you! Our servers carefully detailed the menu and let us taste a new wine prior to ordering. The dinner service manager is knowledgeable and passionate about the dining experience. When we ordered the radicchio salad, I was skeptical that it would be bitter, but was curious to try it. My husband and I could have fought over it--it was that good! The cauliflower was roasted perfectly, and sat upon a sweet and spice infused puree called mahummara with crunchy pine nuts. The complexity of spices compelled us to try another bite, and then another... Roasted carrots are tender and sweet. Paired with cool yogurt and chili crunch, they ascend into another level of deliciousness. A tear of fresh bread across bits of remaining sauce, and then (not a minute sooner) "we are satiated, thank you!" and the server can take the plate. The restaurant is adjacent to a theater that shows unique offerings and they will sometimes coordinate events with menus. We liked the simple cafe style tables and openness. Ample parking is available in back.

I think they have been trimming down the menu a bit to focus more on the Turkish and Mediterranean style food (and the burgers). I think there used to be more Chinese food choices, and maybe pizza. The change is fine for me. I feel like when restaurants try to have a lot of items on the menu, they are usually not as good as places with a narrower focus. Everything I have ever ordered there is still on the menu, and I've always been happy with everything I've had here.

I love immigrants and for bringing their food and culture to our community, otherwise there is no way I could ever experience Somali cuisine. My all time favorite is their lamb shank with rice or spaghetti. Their spaghetti is far more delicious than many restaurants. It's my all time favorite because I love lamb. I always purchase a meal that comes with soup, salad and beverage and because you get a lot of bang for your buck. Last week I had their gyro meal and today I had their goat with fufu. There are several kinds of fufu depending on the culture. I guess you can exchange the side for rice or spaghetti as well. I have. I try to eat here as often as possible, one 1) because you get a large amount of food for what you pay for, and two 2} there are several dishes you have to choose from. I've eaten their salmon dish, their goat, their gyro's and, of course my all time favorite, their lamb shank. With money becoming tight and portions getting small, you can still get a lot of food for your money. And, as always, you can't beat their kind service and constant attention to make sure you are enjoying the meal and if everything is okay. High end service in a small family run restaurant hidden in the back of a strip mall waiting for curious customers to seek them out and enjoy authentic Somali cuisine. Yes, I will go back as I have many, many times over the last three years. Enjoy the food, enjoy the culture by stepping outside your box. I already know what I want to eat on my next visit. It was definitely on the thin side and there were less roasted veggies (a piece of cauliflower and mostly zucchini with essentially no flavor of their own) than I anticipated there would be. I was thinking that the lamb would be real lamb steak chunks since it was pricer than the beef option, but it was gyro meat texture. Granted, the gyro was DELICIOUS. The best bite of the bowl, probably the best gyro meat I've had. I thought there would be a decent amount of fresh tomatoes on top, but no dice. I think I maybe got four cherry tomatoes halves. The pita was good enough, unremarkable. I've eaten a decent amount of Mediterranean food and worked at a Greek restaurant for three years, and this meal didn't live up to my expectations. With the to-go plating, the meat was on one side and hummus and veggies were on the other side of a partitioned container. It just felt weird. They couldn't stock a to-go bowl large enough to contain a bowl? I'd pass on this meal.
