Taj is the best food in the Farnam/Blackstone district. They are so good that I downloaded this app to give this review. They are always quick and very accommodating. They also always treat you the best even to those who have been bar hopping all night!

I visited Shahen Afghan with my Supper Club group (where we try new places most of us haven't…read morebeen), and we all enjoyed it quite well. The interior is very colorful and welcoming, with greens, reds, and yellows, the colors of the Afghan flag, which was very cool. Our server was a young man (we think he was possibly the owner's son), and he was professional and efficient in taking our orders and keeping our drinks filled. Our group tried many dishes and each one was flavorful and came as a generous serving. We started with the potato bolani, which was a soft and fluffy naan type bread filled with potato and served with a lassi type dip and a chutney - it was also perfect to go with any of the meat dishes we tried. We also had the Mantu to start - a tasty little dish of succulent lamb dumplings, with a savory and sweet topping of beans and yogurt. Very interesting flavor profile for sure. Another dish we tried was the Chicken Biryani which came atop some flavorful rice. The chicken was dark meat, which I'm not usually a fan of, but it worked in this case. It was also topped with a lot of onions and an egg, which I wasn't a fan of, so just did not eat those parts. One of us had the Chicken Breast Cube Kebabs which came as little cubes atop the rice, with a hefty helping of a red sauce/marinade that had a little bit of heat. Needed another lassi to cool down after this one! Another tried the Lamb Kabob which is an absolute classic and you can't go wrong ordering that. We shared a few desserts to try: -Baklava/Baghlawa, which can be found in many cultures (Greek, Turkish), so I'm sure many have had this dessert. Nuts, dough, honey, yum. -Sheer Peera, which was described as a "milky fudge" and tasted very nutty but with a slightly floral flavor added in. Overall, I'd say this is a great place to try Afghan cuisine. It's not fine dining or anything, and definitely be prepared for some spicy flavors - but it's for sure a place to try a few new things!

The pillow bread was a perfect vehicle to scoop up the chickpeas. The meat platter includes spiced stir fried beef, chicken and fried fish. To note, the fish was seasoned deliciously, very lightly breaded, and cook to tender goodness. I liked the sides veggies that came with the meal of a chickpea stew and braised collard greens. The meal was also accompanied with rice (not pictured) and the rice was a lovely pilaf style rice. Pro tip, this is a long building and the entrance to this restaurant is on Douglas St NOT 25th st. Open the door, and you will be met with a long hallway with 8 "suites". This restaurant is at the very end on the right. If the sign says closed, but the door to the "suite" is open, the restaurant is open. To note about the decor, it is sparse. The overhead lighting in the dining area is on a 2 min motion sensor, so if there aren't a lot of people, you will have "mood lighting" most of the time. Also, the building and space is clean, but utilitarian. This place is about the food not decor.

We were excited about the Mac bowl, then disappointed when 80% were French fries. The mozzarella stick was yummy. The sliders were huge and had good flavor, the coleslaw was the star. We ordered medium, I could only taste chili powder. We decided next time we would not order so much. We ended up leaving almost all the fries. Husband really enjoyed the pickles!

What should have been a simple online order turned into an unnecessarily frustrating experience. I entered the entire order, but when I got to checkout, the purchase button was grayed out and would not allow me to complete the transaction. Thinking the issue might be that I had not entered my credit card information, I tried to add it separately, only to be told that payment information could only be added when making a purchase. When I returned to checkout, my entire order had disappeared from my cart. I entered everything a second time and had the exact same problem. I then called the store hoping I could simply place the order over the phone. I was told I would need to come into the store to place it. That was incredibly inconvenient, but I drove to the restaurant with my laptop and order information anyway. The night manager was very nice and genuinely tried to help. She looked over the order on my laptop and could not identify any reason the website wouldn't allow me to complete the purchase. Unfortunately, she then told me the store could only enter orders for the same day and could not place my order for the following morning. She called the GM for assistance and was told that I would need to order through Grubhub, DoorDash, or another third-party service. That solution made absolutely no sense. Why should a customer have to pay additional third-party fees to order Dave's Hot Chicken because Dave's own website isn't functioning properly--especially after that customer has already attempted to order online, called the restaurant, AND driven to the store at the restaurant's direction? The only other option offered was for me to return when the restaurant opened at 10:30 the next morning and place the order then. My meeting began at 11:00, which was the entire reason I was trying to place a scheduled order in advance. After everything I had already experienced, there was no way I could reasonably trust that I would be able to place a group order, have it prepared, leave the restaurant, get to my meeting, and set up on time. Again, the night manager was polite and apologetic, and I don't fault her for the limitations of the system. But ultimately, no one was able to offer a reasonable solution. I made multiple attempts to give this restaurant my business--twice through their website, by phone, and finally by physically driving to the store--and still could not place an order for the following morning. This was an incredibly poor customer experience caused by a combination of a malfunctioning ordering system, policies that prevent employees from helping customers work around that system, and a complete lack of a reasonable alternative when something goes wrong. Ordering chicken should simply not be this difficult.
