First time trying El Basha. We sat inside, it's a cozy place. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. They were pretty busy with people inside, people outside on the patio and to-go orders. We placed our order and waited and waited.. the person who took our order noticed it had take awhile and checked on us to see if we had gotten our food, she rushed to the back and our food was out shortly after. We had the gyros combo and kafta wrap combo, both were great. The gyros was piled high with meat and topped with onions, tomatoes and delicious tzatziki. The kafta was tasty in a paratha wrap with tahini. We saw others ordering platters and different appetizers, which all looked and smelled amazing. We'll be back to try more things!

Told my son in law that I wanted something special for lunch on my visit to Omaha. We went to El Basha for lunch. When we pulled up the line was out to the door with every table filled. The food did not disappoint. You order at the counter, get a number and sit down. We ordered the lamb kabob platter, lentil soup, tabouli salad, and gyro salad. Lamb was seasoned very well and cooked perfect medium. Gyro salad was good with nice amount of sauce. The star of the show was the lentil soup. The favor was off the chain good and I wanted to lick the bowl 5 of 5 stars all day

The food is incredible and flavorful and beautiful. The restaurant is small, so get in early!

Picked up some items to go, don't think I really knew what I was getting. Really wasn't that great, can't say I'll be back. To be fair the hummus and baba ganoush were really good on their pita.

After arriving here after a long day on the road, this dinner was very disappointing. The onions were huge and way too strong. All of the food was overly salted without any other flavor. The entire gyro meal was just lukewarm - the fries in particular were barely cooked and tasted like oily, hard potatoes. I really wanted this place to be better.

Went once and it immediately became one of my Omaha favorites. I love this cute little space. The food is quite reasonably priced and the portions are quite generous- we got two sandwiches with fries and hummus with pita for $30 with a tip. My only complaint is that the space is a bit cramped. It's charming in a way but it's a bit difficult to navigate. The soda machine has a server station right on top of it.

first time trying this place it was recommended by a friend. Now I will say once I arrived I was befuddled when I observed the frolic coming from the long line at the door but after getting my food I understood. The young lady running the cash register was quick and polite when taking my order she explained a couple of items on the menu that I was unfamiliar with. The location is a very intimate space so if you don't like crowded spaces I would recommend to get your order to go or visit the restaurant during the week when there is less people. There were about three people running the restaurant so please be patient as the cashier had to also bring out the orders. The food is definitely an acquired taste I enjoyed it considering I never had Mediterranean food before. Small businesses are important to support and I will definitely go back. Plenty of parking and also there was a handicap spot closer to the door. The location was easy to find.

Kafta kebab with rice

Food is delicious! But they forgot the soup. Choice of indoor or outdoor ( weather permitting). There's a wait but not bad.

Someone had a hankering for Mediterranean and I was just along for the ride! Usually we share entrees but I wasn't feeling chicken schwarma and he wasn't feeling kafta. Say no more! Daily specials come with soup or salad, and we both opted for their killer salad! Fresh, decent portions, excellent dressing, spices, and thinly sliced onions, a bit of purple cabbage, and tomatoes. The hubs snagged the chicken schwarma over rice ($13.99), with grilled yellow/green peppers, onions, tomatoes, and drizzled with tahini sauce. Their rice? Always a plus in our book; so fragrant and paired well with the choice of protein and veggies. Plate was empty when we left! I choice the kafta kebab over rice ($12.99) with a tahini drizzle, thinly sliced onions, purple cabbage, thinly sliced tomatoes, and a trickle of garlic sauce. The kebab was grilled just right; not dry and not overly greasy, either. Paired perfectly, again! I'm telling ya, that rice gets me every time. Unfortunately there was a rather long piece of hair laying across it and noticed it after bite two. Daily specials are also served with a fountain drink; which is self served, self refills too. While you're there getting your soda, lemonade or unsweetened tea on make sure you grab your silverware! Napkins and some condiments are already on the tables.

One of the best places for Mediterranean food in Omaha super helpful staff and the food is delicious. Restaurant is clean.

It's been a number of years since my last visit to El Basha. One thing is consistent is they serve great Mediterranean food. I had the gyro salad and it was wonderful. Gyro meat was moist and the salad dressing was a nice compliment. I noticed a hint of mint. Oh that rhymed :). I should frequent this restaurant more as the food it good and the staff is always very friendly. Overall a great experience and will plan to return.

Do they serve wine? Or can you bring it? Thanks!!

I'm wondering if the meat is Halal?

I believe I saw a sign by the counter that said Yes.

Shahen Afghan Restaurant

Shahen Afghan Restaurant

West Omaha

I visited Shahen Afghan with my Supper Club group (where we try new places most of us haven't…read morebeen), and we all enjoyed it quite well. The interior is very colorful and welcoming, with greens, reds, and yellows, the colors of the Afghan flag, which was very cool. Our server was a young man (we think he was possibly the owner's son), and he was professional and efficient in taking our orders and keeping our drinks filled. Our group tried many dishes and each one was flavorful and came as a generous serving. We started with the potato bolani, which was a soft and fluffy naan type bread filled with potato and served with a lassi type dip and a chutney - it was also perfect to go with any of the meat dishes we tried. We also had the Mantu to start - a tasty little dish of succulent lamb dumplings, with a savory and sweet topping of beans and yogurt. Very interesting flavor profile for sure. Another dish we tried was the Chicken Biryani which came atop some flavorful rice. The chicken was dark meat, which I'm not usually a fan of, but it worked in this case. It was also topped with a lot of onions and an egg, which I wasn't a fan of, so just did not eat those parts. One of us had the Chicken Breast Cube Kebabs which came as little cubes atop the rice, with a hefty helping of a red sauce/marinade that had a little bit of heat. Needed another lassi to cool down after this one! Another tried the Lamb Kabob which is an absolute classic and you can't go wrong ordering that. We shared a few desserts to try: -Baklava/Baghlawa, which can be found in many cultures (Greek, Turkish), so I'm sure many have had this dessert. Nuts, dough, honey, yum. -Sheer Peera, which was described as a "milky fudge" and tasted very nutty but with a slightly floral flavor added in. Overall, I'd say this is a great place to try Afghan cuisine. It's not fine dining or anything, and definitely be prepared for some spicy flavors - but it's for sure a place to try a few new things!

The appetizers of Sambusa and pillow bread are outstanding…read more The Sambusa of this day was full of spiced tender beef, carrots, and onions making it a great tasting meat hand-pie. The pillow bread was a perfect vehicle to scoop up the chickpeas. The meat platter includes spiced stir fried beef, chicken and fried fish. To note, the fish was seasoned deliciously, very lightly breaded, and cook to tender goodness. I liked the sides veggies that came with the meal of a chickpea stew and braised collard greens. The meal was also accompanied with rice (not pictured) and the rice was a lovely pilaf style rice. Pro tip, this is a long building and the entrance to this restaurant is on Douglas St NOT 25th st. Open the door, and you will be met with a long hallway with 8 "suites". This restaurant is at the very end on the right. If the sign says closed, but the door to the "suite" is open, the restaurant is open. To note about the decor, it is sparse. The overhead lighting in the dining area is on a 2 min motion sensor, so if there aren't a lot of people, you will have "mood lighting" most of the time. Also, the building and space is clean, but utilitarian. This place is about the food not decor.

Love the food, service is mediocre at best…read more Loved the tandoori shrimp with poratta as Dan Hoppen suggests, making a taco with the chutney. Butter chicken, naan, etc. were delicious as well as the cocktails. The problem here is the food is amazing and the service is poor. The first time we came here we waited for 30+ minutes PAST our reservation time and were never seated. We were not even offered water or a drink, we asked for the manager and never saw one, and stormed out. We waited a year and went back due to people raving about this place and had a OK time, not the best Indian food in the area but a fresh take, OK service. This trip was back to a less than ideal experience. Waited 15 minutes from seating to get a drink order. Didn't even see wait staff telling us they'd be with us soon. I expected this knowing this place is all good food and poor service, so no surprise. We were greeted AS IF this was totally normal, get your table and wait 15 minutes, so no apologies or acknowledgement that we'd even been sitting and waiting. Quickly ordered drinks apps and the meal proceeded as expected, with a more regular pace. At the end of the meal we want a box, to pay and leave. Again, waiting for a long time with no wait staff helping us. I love the food but you can honestly get better Indian food for WAY less money a mile away, and the staff doesn't treat you like you need them and they don't need you. Atmosphere is decent, but didn't have music playing even though they have speakers I can see. The cost of the restaurant does not match the delivery on the service or ambiance. Not sure if the staff is underpaid, or the leadership doesn't honor quality front of house, but it's a total mismatch. We had 2 sets of silverware and one was rolled normal like, the other was rolled up like 6 inches differentiation because of the poor and inconsistent preparation of the silverware/napkin. This would not fly at most every cheap-o restaurant, but apparently here that's what you get. It really seemed like the staff didn't really care. The price point doesn't match the service. Good food, be prepared to wait and expect you're paying for the food not the service.

Kudos to the owners for training up your staff. We sat at the bar and the service was great. The rest of the room was being tended to promptly as well. We were really impressed!
