Very disappointed with my service here. I entered the store looking to buy a saree and found one that I really liked. Store employee offered me a discounted price to purchase and I was willing to buy but wanted to compare tailoring prices at stores nearby before purchasing because I would need to have a blouse separately made. When I told her I was going to quickly step out to compare prices with tailors, she threatened that "if I go compare prices and come back, she will charge me the full price". Very disappointed to see the switch in her character and way she treated me just because I wasn't going to quickly purchase that exact moment. Store has very beautiful clothing but I'd rather spend more at a location where the employees treat customers with respect and don't use manipulation tactics force a sale. read more

We have purchased a few things here, but I have to warn you. This place is notorious among desis for overcharging and expecting you to haggle it down. If you have your eye on anything here, be prepared to make a counter-offer of half or less than what they are demanding. Be prepared to walk out; maybe come back later and they might agree to your price. Or not. Also the women who work there often speak little or no English. In fact they don't speak good Hindi either. You really need to have patience with them and guide them through the process of finding the color or style you want. In short, the service at Taj Sari Palace is abominable. AVOID, avoid, avoid this place. To summarize: I spent ~$4,000 in clothes for myself (soon-to-be bride), my bridal party and mother, and in the end am unhappy with all of it. Including my bridal dress - arguably the most important piece of the entire event, for me - which is saddening and unfortunate. Perhaps I'd be happier with it if I hadn't endured the worst service and customer experience I've ever had in my 30 years on this planet. Here's why I suggest you avoid this place like the plague: - IMPOSSIBLE COMMUNICATION: The sheer amount of time it took to get a response from these people is what made the entire process so unbearable. Between flatly ignoring my emails and calls, speaking broken English, making false promises on timing, and never regularly communicating proactively where the heck my $4,000 of merchandise was, it became a full-time job just to track these people down. Of ALL of my dozens of wedding vendors, this was the worst and most time-consuming one to deal with. Mariya is too scared to actually communicate, despite me begging her a dozen times to just tell me ANY update (Is my sari on this continent? What MONTH should I expect it so I can plan accordingly? Is there any update at all? I'll even take a "no news" update - ANYTHING so I know you didn't just take my money and close up shop). She told me she was "scared" of me because I was so upset - to the point that she was losing sleep - but still, never started communicating (which would've made me far less scary, I'm sure). The owner's son stepped in towards the end -- AFTER my sister went to the store in person to just get any freaking response -- to assure me that they're handling my issue / improving their communications. Of course, soon enough he, too, dropped off the face of the earth. At one point he promised to call me back after he left a crowd, and completely forgot. My most recent exchange with him involved a string of 15-20 texts from me only - he never, ever replied. Never called. Had someone else do his bidding, and she did a crappy job. - WRONG/MESSED UP ORDERS: I got 10 bridesmaid saris and 1 wedding sari at Taj Sari, and while they are acceptable -- in that they are pieces of fabric in colors that are in the same family as the ones I wanted -- they're not nearly close to what I special ordered -- despite them reassuring me a million times that it'd be perfect, that I could pick my colors, embellishments, etc. My wedding sari arrived in the wrong color (cream, not white), with a busted zipper, so I couldn't even try it on. They reimbursed me for the zipper, only after stalking them / demanding some sort of payment to cover the cost of a new zipper ($75). My bridesmaids' saris have flowers all over the place (I hate flowers - never requested those), and zero effort was made to fix that, or the color of mine. Each time I brought it up, they ignored it. - SEVERELY DELAYED PRODUCTION: My sari was supposed to arrive in late July/early August. They received a wrong sari, and of course blamed this on the supply chain in India and didn't take accountability for it. Not to mention, I had to seek them out for this update - I called, emailed daily -- because I had to know if I had to get another dress for my wedding -- and probably got a response about 25% of the time. My bridesmaid sari shipment update was equally as frustrating earlier this spring. I could go on, but I'm so done wasting time thinking about these fools. I highly recommend AVOIDING this place at all costs, unless you like stalking people for updates on expensive clothing you bought and dealing with rude, unhelpful people. read more

Huge selection of sari fabrics (and bangles and jewelry, as mentioned); my friend was buying, but I was just standing around wishing I had my sewing machine with me in Chicago. When we were there, at least, there seemed to be some good sales going on for a lot of the pre-cut fabric - my friend bought three chiffon embroidered saris for $120, and there were other deals as well. Honestly the WORST customer service I've ever experienced in my life. We came in looking for my bridal outfits and wedding clothes for my mother in law and sister in law. This sales woman just kept saying to look at the rack and we don't have much in your size- umm excuse me? I fit into normal sizes, that's so insulting and especially to a bride. Wow the nerve of some people! They were too busy sitting around doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but unpacking stuff and chatting drinking chai. Another time we went in they refused to get up and show us jewelry unless we were ready to buy- like how can I buy something if you can't be bothered to show us anything- they literally sent a young girl as an errand girl sending messages back and forth to tell us they can't come help us unless we will for sure buy. How lazy can someone be? Are you out of your minds??? That's how you run a shop? Why are you even open? It's fine though, we ended up spending about 7-8k at Sahil and Regal for several outfits so it's truly their loss. Maybe if they spent less time sitting in a circle unpacking stuff and not insulting the few customers that walk in then they might be able to sell something. Why are you even unpacking stuff when you don't want to pay attention to any customers that walk in. To whoever owns the store- You should just stop ordering new things, there's no point when your staff turns away any interested customers which happened on two separate occasions. My parents used to speak so highly of this store, my dad used to come get saris pulled right off the mannequins in the window for my mom and they used to love the staff there. Those days are totally over. Good luck to the owners, you need to either hire new staff or close your doors. I would suggest you have someone pretend to be a customer and see how your staff treats them. Also I've noticed that all the people that had positive reviews seem to have one thing in common, they aren't desi... I found this place on accident (what a happy accident) I was looking for bulk (and cheap) fabric store I saw on-line to make a California King Bed Spread for our bedroom. I could not believe the beautiful fabrics, colors and sparkles that adorned this shop. I fell in love with a beautiful silk sari fabrics. Mariya was very helpful and knew the right amount of fabric I would need for my project. I just phoned them to find out a few things I would need to do before sewing my bedspread and they answered all my questions giving me the confidence I need to tackle this project head on. Silk is light weight and warm. Teamed up with a high count flat bead sheet for the lining... you can't beat the warmth for winter (without all that weight and bulk) I am off to the sewing machine to make my vision thanks to Mariya and the nice folks at the Taj Sari palace. I can't help but wonder if there are two Taj Sari Palaces right next door to each other because I think I wandered into the great one tonight. At least, based on the negative reviews I've seen here. I couldn't have been happier with the attention we got (they even ran and got me a glass of water when I started coughing!) and the prices were better than most I see online for the same sort of saris. And far from the merchandise being inaccessible, I have to say that I handled quite a lot of bolts of cloth and folded saris and no one discouraged me. In fact they were right there to take more out and show me once they discovered the color families I was looking for. As for haggling... well I come from a retail family and my father would throw merchandise in the garbage can if someone tried to haggle with him. I wouldn't dream of trying that in any store in this city unless or until I was given a clear indication that it was not just acceptable but expected. I think it's rude. If something costs too much, I just don't buy it. And when you get saris for as low as $20 each, I don't see any reason to balk. It's true there are racks which advertise "Buy one at $120 and get two free." and if you're there for one item, then stay away from those racks. But I wanted a lot of material, and I made out like a bandit by taking advantage of the sales. Bring friends, split costs. Oh, and while we were being rung up, they gave us our choice of remnants for free. Yeah, not so much of the rude and disinterested there. Really big shop that has so many different saris, jewelery sets, and shoes and bags. Its really fun to browse around this shop and the colorful merchandise is beautiful. They have some really nice glass bangles that you can check out if you're not really interested in wearing a saru ;). The service here is pretty good too. read more

I just had a LOVELY experience with Mariya. I told her what I wanted to spend, she helped me select a handful of pretty saris. She showed me how to pleat and tuck -- but once she saw the look of bewilderment on my face, she told me to just come back the day of my friend's wedding for help with styling and makeup. (Sadly, the wedding is in LA.) She raised the price a bit at the end, but I haggled her back down a bit and only spent $25 more than I'd budgeted. Then she threw in two matching bracelets and sent me down the street to a tailor, who she called to get me fast-tracked. While I was in the store at least 3 other women asked about my sari, so I feel great about my selection. I've been in here to just browse a few times, and also once to pick out saris for my bridesmaids to wear, and twice for their fittings. I feel like I was treated totally differently when I had my sister-in-law with us to pick out saris and help bargain the price down, versus when I came by myself or with my other bridesmaids. Service a little less friendly, being told I'd have to come back the next day to pick up something that was sitting behind the counter, etc. I would not come here with the intent to buy something without bringing my haggling skills, or preferably, one of my family members who have much more experience (and language skills) than I do. All that being said though, they have a pretty good selection and prices can be reasonable once you go through a few rounds of haggling. read more

Was visiting Chicago from out of town with friends and ended up finding the perfect engagement outfit here. The service was great she was not overbearing and she shared her honest opinion. They also work out great deals. Since I was from out of time and short on-time they altered my blouse and shipped it within a week and even called me to confirm that I received my blouse okay. Taj sari was beautiful and had really beautiful dresses. I came here to get dresses for my cousin's wedding. I found the perfect dress for myself but it was the first place I went to on our shopping spree so I did not purchase it. The lady working there was really nice and helped us choose 6 or 7 different outfits in the style I requested. I agree with the other posters. They over charge and you are expected to haggle the prices. They rather haggle over five bucks than retain a customer. The ladies who work here are kind of rude and pushy. Sometimes they will not help you at all and other times they will hover over you. Sometimes they tell you they have a particular thing to show you to prevent you from leaving and then they show you something completely different. For these reasons, I think that the customer service stinks. I will avoid this place because it gives me high blood pressure. read more

Nice selection of clothes, but DO NOT get alterations from here! They made me pay a questionably extra amount to alter my suit, and when i came back the next day it was even more ill fitting. What made the whole situation more ridiculous was the fact that they had taken my measurements, so when I tried it on after the tailoring, I was appalled. They then asked me to pay more because the tailor expected more for the crappy work he did! After seeing it fitted terribly after alterations, they decided to alter it once again, told me it would take 5-10 minutes, i ended up waiting a half hour, then just decided to leave and come back later. I was so exhausted by dealing with these people that i just took the suit and went straight home without trying it on, convinced it wouldn't fit after the second alteration. Turns out it still didn't fit right and now i'm going to find someone else to tailor it. Moral of the story : Buy your clothes here, but don't alter (ps. there is always room to bargain for a better price) read more

Rude rude RUDE!!!! The lack of any sort of customer service leaves you guessing whether they even want anyone's business in the first place. I intended to buy a lot of clothes as I have a wedding in the family coming up soon. I roamed around for about an hour and picked up some nice outfits for men. One of the lady who came over to finally show me some things was so disinterested and unhelpful. I wanted to see a kurta in a different size and she went on to say they didn't have it in the size I wanted, when it was very clear that it was sitting on the shelf. My mom proceeded to tell the lady that the size was available ( the shelves are marked with the sizes) she was even ruder. She went onto tell us curtly that the store was closing. At this point I had enough of this lady's snarky attitude. I put all the stuff I picked up down and left. I am of the younger Desi generation and this establishment needs to realize that they need to cater to us with good service. We aren't like our parents generation where you make due with what you have. Oh well, taj sari palace lost out on about $1000 of business all because they couldn't be bothered. That's insane to me. What makes everything worse is that they really had a great collection and I really liked the things I picked up. My mom has some saris that I want to wear next year for some weddings but I don't have blouses in my size for them, so we headed to devon to pick out matching fabrics in order to send them to india to get blouses made. My parents have had some good experiences in Taj so we headed there first. The lady who (either owns or) works there was super friendly and helpful. She looked at all my moms blouses and immediately started pulling fabrics that matched or would provide a nice contrast to the saris. The prices were reasonable, as well. We checked out another 2 stores which had lower prices, but after talking to my parents, the "type of fabric" and quality of the type that Taj was selling was definitely better. After selecting the fabrics we were going to buy, I walked around and looked at a few saris and salwars. Everything was reasonably priced in my opinion - saris (that I was looking at) ranged from 120- 160 and salwars I was looking at ranged from 175-275. I didn't end up buying any because I'm hoping to shrink a few sizes before some weddings I have this year, so plan on returning then in an effort to reduce the number of alterations I have to make. After going to a few of the shops on devon looking for sari's this store was a breath of fresh air! The women who attended us was very helpful and had no problem taking down any sari we asked to see. It is true that you need to haggle, but that is pretty much expected in any store on that street. The sari we ended up getting was listed as 450 dollars and we were able to haggle it down to 180 dollars including the sari, the petticoat and the blouse! The sales women was very understanding and personable, everything in the store was well organized and clean. This place is Horrible. So you will find some items that are "cheaper" than many of the other stores on Devon. However, the workmanship of the clothes is the reason. Stones are glued on rather then sewn, borders are loosely stitched on etc. This place does have a selection however, the store has been getting smaller and smaller over the years. We came in looking for shoes for my FH 's wedding outfit. When we walked and asked the lady pointed to an area behind the counter and said shoes are 50$. We had to lift the men's clothing to find shoes. It was kinda weird. We found his size, and she said the price was 65$ for plain red shoes. As with any store on devon bargaining is expected, I showed the lady the pair of shoes online for $30 dollar, instead of matching the price she said "then buy them online don't buy them here you pay $50 that's as low as I will go. When the shoes come to you, you will regret buying them and come back to me." So I decided whatever, let's just take them. Instead of completing the transaction she walked away from me as started talking to another customer. I approached her and asked "why did you walk away from me, I wanted to pay and leave?" Instead of apologizing she was like "you wait, I have another customer." I was like seriously I want to pay and leave and instead of completing my transactions you are going to walk away. This is not customer service you finish the transaction with me and then help somebody else. How rude are you? Another sales associate came to complete my transaction cuz she walked away from me for a second time. This sales associate took her side and she no she was not rude. The kicker to this whole experience was that this other customer was not budging on bargaining and so she started talking sh*t about him to the sales associated in front of me. I should have translated for him what she said about her but I decided I had already yelled enough. I needed the shoes and so I gave them my money. Honestly, had I not had a time crunch I would have walked out. This place is horrible. The women are rude, rude, rude, rude with no manners at all. Worst place to ever order anything for an important event, I wish I read the previous comments before I decided to go to Taj sari palace for a wedding outfit. they are terrible with their details and the fulfillment of their orders, they made my fiancé's outfit extremely ugly, nothing of what we asked for and you would think that they would have some sense into what they are producing themselves, someone smart told me that a business is represented by what they sell and if they think my fiancés outfit is worth wearing, we will be the laughing stock of the whole wedding. Im and thoroughly pissed and upset, I was on a tight budget and we had to go somewhere else to buy another outfit because we did not get a exchange or refund! They did not even try to help us resolve the extremely big issue at hand, instead they were ignorant and careless. Never going there for any outfit ever again and I hope no one has to go through what I did. I am still upset about how much money went into the outfit and in the end they took my money and No outfit. I recently went to this store to buy sarees for my mom and sister. They are very very expensive, and yes you have to bargain a lot with these people..However, there is a bigger problem, this is the second time that this store has over charged my credit card more than once for one bill. A year back they over charged my credit card and i had to go back and forth with them to get my money back. I thought mistakes happen, but now again they repeated the same thing. Seems to be like a fraud, PEOPLE do keep a check on your CC statements if you do business with this people. I still havent go my money back for the most recent over charge. Good lucks !!! read more
