This review falls between four and four and a half stars. Delicious Indian food in the heart of downtown Manchester. Boyfriend has been wanting to try Taj for a while and we finally took the opportunity to stop in while we were in the area. The ambiance inside the restaurant is calm and quiet. The service was efficient and friendly enough. We got paneer pakoras, chicken madras, paneer masala and garlic naan. You can choose your level of spice on a scale of one to six. I ordered my madras to be a five and my boyfriend ordered six for the paneer masala. The pakoras and chutneys were solid. The naan bread was soft, pillowy and had a pleasant chew, making it some of the best I've ever tasted. I tried the paneer masala and enjoyed the richness of it, plus my boyfriend said the spice of it was perfect. I really loved the madras curry, perfect spice level and bursting with flavor. Overall a very good experience at Taj. We will definitely have to make a point to return if we're ever in downtown Manchester again! read more

Saturday night, ~8ish, date night with the spouse. Walked in and the place had exactly three tables occupied -- which in restaurant math = peace, quiet, and zero chaos. My kind of nightlife. Full transparency: We declined the bread. Yes... IK. A cardinal sin. A culinary betrayal. But after a certain age, carbs stop being your friend and start acting like that shady acquaintance who convinces you to make bad life choices. So we stayed strong. Mostly. Waters pro-actively refilled often, and our waitress offered more rice like she knew my carb boundaries are weak. Respect. FOOD: Entree's: Lamb kabobs (medium) Shrimp tandoori Marsala (regular) Listen... I could've just ordered a vat of that masala sauce and a spoon and called it dinner. Creamy, perfect texture, medium spice level that said "hello" w/out choosing violence. The kabobs didn't look appetizing to me, and appeared tough to chew and cut, but no verbal complaints from my better half (shrug). Consistently good Indian food! I have been to a number of Indian joints in New Hampshire and Taj India is one of the ones that I have been back to multiple times. The staff are friendly, they are quick to take your order, ask if you need additional items, ASK how your meal has been, and offer dessert at the end of the meal. These may be common things expected at a restaurant, but you see this a lot less frequently these days. They are in a great location in downtown Manchester and have plenty of seating. I have have eaten in every time except one time when I had a friend bring me take-out while I was sick with COVID. The meal traveled extremely well and if I was in a bind, I'd certainly opt for take-out again. I have not experienced the lunch buffet, every time I visit, it is after buffet hours. However, I do hope to try it some time soon. I haven't been disappointed by anything lately, the biggest complaint that I had was when a Samosa had a cool core, but I do understand that some food has to be prepared in advance and I'd rather have a cool center than an overcooked exterior. read more

It was good flavor on the Marsala, but these are large dishes so you might want to share them with a friend. Very extensive menu of tasty dishes. They also have a good range of wines (by the glass or bottle) and mixed drinks. I ordered the lamb saag and it was a generous portion. My wife ordered the tiki masala (medium) and found it a bit too spicy. My only tweak was the chicken samosa. It was a bit overcooked or dried out. SO SO GOOD!!!! came here with my family and we all shared the samosas, onion bhaji, chicken tikki masala, chicken korma, chicken curry, and the plain nan. we also had masala tea (which was great, i'd never had it before but it tasted similar to chai!) and kheer!! we were able to eat leftovers of the main meals for days - big portions! we were seated right away on a friday night and all the workers were so nice and very attentive! read more

The service was good, including the location, decor and our meals. However, being very familiar with this cuisine our meals tasted differently to what is known and expected. Popadoms - Very thin and tasted good but not kept whole, which was expected and the side sauces also tasted different. Chicken Madras - Pretty good but it tasted different to decades of experiences with this dish. Definitely a thicker sauce but with an additional unknown background flavour. Lamb Seekh Kebab - No appetiser option and offered as a main meal. Pretty good but it was made with an unknown marinade on the dish, so it looked and tasted different in addition to having no traditional mint sauce available. We would consider trying this place again, but choose different dishes. This would help ascertain if other menu items are different to past experiences and long held expectations. read more

Went in for the lunch buffet and lots of the food was cold! Not great, and possibly a health violation. Don't serve it please, if it needs to be thrown away! Inside of the place is clean and my waiter was pleasant and accommodating, but I'm not so sure this qualifies as good service if there is such major problems with the food. Yikes! read more

They asked me to leave a review as we were leaving. So here it is. We were celebrating a birthday for 3 people in our party of 6. They didn't ask if we wanted dessert. They basically kicked us out at 8, even though their hours were posted until 9:30. They charged us $3.75 for small cups of masala tea. The food was fine. Their spice levels are higher than other Indian restaurants I have been to. One of my friends who I went with raves about how wonderful the food is. As I said, it was fine. Service was not too great as we kept getting ignored when we were trying to ask for more water. Juju got us takeout while I was home and found new Indian favorites!! I've only had Indian food a handful of times but the rating for me is the korma and the naan. I can't handle spice so I'm particular about my order! I absolutely LOVED the nav rattan korma...it was everything I love in Indian...not spicy, flavorful, sweet, creamy, veggie filled. I looked at Yelp reviews before walking through the door. With a first visit I generally judge Indian food on the chutneys and a personal favorite, anything cooked tandoori style. They did not provide chutney and the tandoori mixed grill, while advertised as served on a sizzling plate came on white porcelain. It was lukewarm and tough. I suspect it was partially warmed in a microwave. It is a pity because the service was generally acceptable, but I don't plan on returning. read more

This place is excellent; their curries are spot-on and kebabs are good. Lovely naans and other tasty "side-treats" are available on the menu, including a deliciously refreshing Mango Lassi. Also, beware, they authentically spice their food; so if you're asking for a, let's say "5 out of 10" spice level, your food will definitely have a kick. Play it safe with a "Mild" rating if a dish's unexpected heat could put you off. I live 30 m north of this restaurant and we have a good Indian restaurant in town already but I still get stuff from here whenever I get a chance. read more

I've been to Taj India in Manchester a few times for their lunch buffet, which is pretty basic. The weekday buffet is $11.99 plus tax and includes green salad, 4 garnishes, 10 hot items, dessert, and hot chai milk tea. Some of the hot items served on the buffet include tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, shrimp curry, kafta balls, naan, vegetable korma, mixed vegetable pakoras, basmati rice, grilled and vegetables. The food is not too spicy here. For dessert, their rice pudding is very good and refreshing. The food on the buffet was replenished often on my recent visits. The service was adequate, with my used dishes cleared between buffet trips and water glass kept filled. Overall, their buffet has been pretty decent and convenient place for lunch, especially when I have business to conduct in Downtown Manchester. read more

There's a reason this place is rapidly dropping in reviews... used to be a delicious reliable go-to spot for lunch buffet. I completely get the "server serves you buffet" approach that they shifted to a while back, and now the "we just give you a random plate" approach, along with prices going up (all due to COVID). But, the food has dropped in quality, and with their lunch buffet you are not allowed to ask for no rice apparently... also, the gentleman serving us could not tell us what was going to be on the plate that had peanuts/walnuts/cashews (allergic)... ended up ordering off of the menu since I wasn't willing to play roulette and didn't want to be forced to eat something I did not want. Overall, just a meh place now instead of the gem it used to be. There are much better Indian spots in Manchester to give your business to. read more

We stopped by the check out the menu while walking through town to wind down our day. ... what's this? KEEMA samosa? Sure most places have veg samosas, but meat ones are RARE. Very exciting. And -- no way -- stuffed naan -- both chicken tikka and keema varieties? Ok, sold. So we stopped in for apps/bread. Hit the spot. The house special appetizer was a hit with the table, we plowed through its contents right quick. That said, the meat options on the platter went a lot more slowly than the lone samosa and 1/2 a papad. So we ordered spare keema samosas (2 per order) and extra papad. Yeah, that rounded out the portions of the platter nicely for the five of us. It was served with a tryptich of tamarind, green chutney, and pickled onion to adorn either the samosas or papad as you see fit. Beyond that, we ordered both kinds of stuffed naan and an order of poori coupled with a full order of channa masala. Interestingly the channa was a little "lighter" than I've found in most Indian restaurants. Both in terms of color and slightly thinner sauce with still-recognizable tomatoes. I think we got a few pieces of potato in there too. As you might expect, we decimated what they brought out (and ended up ordering even more papad along the way). Service was great and the restaurant was not too crowded at the time. Worth stopping in even if you're familiar with Indian food for exposure to a different style. Sadly didn't get to try any of the fish/seafood. Perhaps next time :) read more

I've been looking for an Indian buffet in the area and this is the first one I tried. It's on Elm so of course you have to pay for parking. Place was empty and there was an old Indian guy at the back counter staring at us the entire time. Chai tea is included in the buffet as expected; unfortunately, the mango lassi is not. So there was that. Here we go: Food The buffet area was a bit light for my taste. I am use to seeing more food options and fruits. There were no fruits at all. Also there wasn't much on the desert side but rice pudding. I am a Gulab Jamun man myself. I can't get enough of those sweet warm balls of joy especially when they are warm. To my surprise they do not offer Gulab Jamun and I have always had them at Indian buffets. May be a regional thing. With that being said, the food was pretty good here. I enjoyed everything that I ate and it was all very well seasoned. They had tikka masala, curry, and there version of saag. Instead of tandoori chicken, they had this red boneless chicken medley that was really good. I approve of the alternative. Unfortunately we went at 1pm so they did not replenish the buffet. Wanting to avoid the lunch crowd may have been a mistake . Service The servers were nice and friendly. Nice change from the typical service we receive in this area. They even made sure to verify we were done eating before removing the food trays. I am definitely coming back here. I gave it 3 stars bcuz the amount of available food was severely lacking for a buffet. I was not able to get seconds because there was none available at the time. Hoping to get more next time. I ordered Hot (as always) and made a special comment to the waiter that I like to perspire when I eat Vindaloo. It was as bland as tomato soup at a cafeteria. Such a great experience at Taj. I also like the nashua location but this night we tried Manchester. Other than some confusion and delay in ordering what was a delicious fall drink from the bar, and timing of bringing our food too quickly, this was such a great meal/experience. We wanted to take our time but certainly fast service if that's what you are looking for! We were offered a chai warm drink on the house that was delicious to start and a great way to start the experience. My friend and I then ordered the meal deal for 2 that includes samosa, naan, soup, meal then dessert. I've done this deal before and it's great. My friend ordered chicken tikka massala and I had the lamb sagh. Both were delicious as was the naan, soup....samosa (yum!) Had to take the rice pudding to go but that was delicious also.
