I have been here twice at this point and both times the food has been really good. The first time I was here, we arrived just after the end of the Sunday buffet (NOOOOOOOO!), but that was ok. I still wanted Indian food so we sat and ordered from the menu. We ordered papadum (delicious!) and bullet naan (delicious!) to share. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala spice level 8 for my entrée and was pleased. My only complaint is that it wasn't a spice level 8...it wasn't really all that spicy. On my second visit here, the buffet was had. And it was everything I needed it to be. The food on the buffet is not spiced so that it can be shared by all but you can ask for spices to add to your own plate to make it your heat level. The variety was good. Tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, vegetable biryani, onion rings, fried tilapia, paneer, and so on. It was great and I will be back. read more

Give this place a try when you're in Dothan! Before I review the food, I want to give 5/5 stars to our server tonight-tall Asian/Indian male with beautiful hair (I meant to ask for his name to make sure he gets recognition when I write my review but didn't get a chance). He was very attentive, friendly, & accommodating. He always exuded warmth in all our interactions. Now, food review. The large appetizer platter and baba ghanoush with naan bread were enough for 2 people. We hardly had room for the entrees. Samosas, Aloo Tikki, and Pakoras were excellent with Tamarind and/or Mint Chutneys! The chicken kebab was too dry. Baba Ghanoush: this is one of the best baba Ghanoushes we've tried. I love the creamy texture with the right blend of sour and salty (lemon), and the smoky flavor from grilling the eggplants. Naan bread: to me, naan is the middle ground between an authentic Mexican flour tortilla and pancakes. Their naan bread is soft, buttery and probably homemade. Curries: Tikka Masala & Butter chicken are their top sellers and you can't really go wrong with those 2. We decided to try Paneer Saagwala Curry & Fish Vindaloo Curry. They were not bad. The Saagwala Curry was rich & tasty. The fish vindaloo reminds me of a non-creamy tikka masala. It wasn't bad but I wish they had more fish options besides tilapia especially when it costs $17. The reason for the 4stars is because I think the pricing can be more reasonable for the curry dishes. They are a bit overpriced for what you get in my opinion. I think they should lower the price especially for chicken dishes or throw in more sides like naans and chutneys in addition to the basmati rice. The chicken kebab was also dry - easy fix with meat thermometer (for chicken 165 deg F) so they don't overcook next time. I would recommend trying them during lunch hours. They offer lunch specials on their curries on M-F until 3pm [more options available - see lunch menu photo]. Overall, I was thrilled to find this Indian/Greek restaurant in Dothan, AL and I would come back again. read more

I decided to try a new restaurant yesterday &' Taj was on my radar because i love trying new indian food! So i went, right off the bat, i was welcomed by two people who were very friendly. I was sat at the bar, my server was Jada. Immediately when i walked through the doors the vibe was just so peaceful and homey, i instantly felt relaxed. Anyway, i was sat at the bar, Jada was very kind and even recommended a couple of her favorite dishes. One being the Mango Curry off the Thursday- Lunch Specials. It was delicious! I got it with 7 spice level, i'd recommend getting it a little bit in the medium heat if you're just trying it for the first time but i enjoyed it very much! I then got a mango lassi and a water to drink. The mango lassi was delicious as well and paired very well with the spicy mango curry. For desert, i got a baklava. (it was plated beautifully, but i dug in before taking a picture). The baklava was unfortunately too sweet for me because i had already drank the mango lassi so i was unable to finish it but it was very warm and tasted so fresh! I will definitely be coming back! The vibes were amazing, the server and the greeters were very nice. I'd recommend this to everyone! Great experience. *with the meal, plus a drink and desert it was only $20! This is the first review I have ever written that I have no clue what my food was going to taste like. This was my first time I had tried Indian food after much peer pressure. When you walk into Taj, you definitely smell the Indian food aroma. There is a dining room and a lounge. I love the idea of a lounge with big, comfy chairs around a table. My waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu. She helped me with my selection of lamb tikka marsala and explained it accurately. The tikka marsala is a tomatoey like gravy mixed with Indian spices. You can pick a meat to be cooked inside it. I chose lamb, which was tender and packed with its own flavor. Rice was served with the meal. My buddy had the chicken tikka marsala. What was weird was that mine with lamb looked different from the chicken. The chicken type looked more like a tomato soup. My other buddy had the spinach type of curry. Sorry, I don't remember the actual name but I liked his better than mine. It tasted like a spicy spinach artichoke dip. Before the meal, you receive a free appetizer. I don't remember the name of it. It was like a huge, crunchy, baked chip. It came with turmeric? A sweet sauce made from fruit and a red onion chutney that really I couldn't get enough of. I was told to order naan, a flatbread, with my meal. I chose feta cheese as my topping. The naan tasted like crispy, thin pizza dough to me. I was not happy with it because there was little feta cheese on it and a part of it was burnt. My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and $1.85. It went well with the spicy food. I liked Taj and my experience with Indian food. I was disappointed with the naan but everything else was good. I would like to go back and try the kabobs and gyros. But so far, I would prefer other types of food over Indian. I'm giving Taj a 4 for the experience and willingness to come back and explore more. read more

We came for the gyro as we haven't found any good Greek restaurants in the area. I don't know what this was but it wasn't a gyro. The bread was more like a tortilla than a pita, and it was badly burnt. The chicken came with some weird sweet sauce on it and even still was it was greasy, bland, dry and literally flavorless. Idk how you can manage to be greasy and dry at the same time but they did. No delicious hallmark greek aroma or flavor from punchy oregano and bright dill. No zip from the onion, no salty feta, cool crunchy cucumber or luscious and creamy tzatziki. The tzatziki sauce was so watery and unappetizing I couldn't bring myself to eat it. They probably have great Indian food but I think they should stop trying to do Greek cuisine because they obviously have no idea what they are doing. read more

We had an early dinner tonight before we did a little shopping. My friend and I shared an order of Chicken Thai Curry and Feta Naan. It was plenty of food for both of us. They asked us how hot we wanted it on a scale of 1-10. Not having eaten there before, we went with a safe 5. Next time, we will go with a 7 or 8 because a 5 didn't give us much heat at all. Our waiter, T, was really nice. He forgot to charge my friend for his top shelf margarita, but instead of comping it, he rang it up separately for the regular margarita price. That was fine. My friend said it was a good margarita. The food came out quickly, but it was only around 5. There were very few people other than us in there at that time. I have had Indian food a handful of times from actual Indian restaurants, but this one is by far the best I have had. We wanted to branch out and try a few different appetizers but didn't know what everything on the menu is but had the sweetest server who patiently walked us through each thing to help us order the perfect appetizers and meal. We ended up with the Masala Papadum and the small appetizer plate as starters, and I had the Chicken Tikka Masala curry with paneer and naan. The chutney they use is addicting and wonderful, and I found it really cool you could mix flavors on the naan to create the perfect combination. We were so full when we left and had to get to-go plates, but we were so happy that we have already decided any time we go to the beach, we have to make a special stop through to eat there again. read more

I liked the look of Taj as I made plans to visit Dothan. I like good Indian restaurants but so many of them are a bit dodgy. Not so Taj! Beautiful restaurant with great ambience. impressive bar area as well. Service was fast, friendly and professional. A+ for environment. The food was delivered minutes after ordering. Very efficient. And excellent quality as well. The chicken Tikka Masala was very, very good although I would have liked it hotter (spicier). Still, it was very, very good. The nan was cooked properly. Unlike many restaurants that serve a very doughy version, this was crisp and flavorful. perfect. My only suggestions ... it's an Indian restaurant and doesn't feature any Indian beers. It's the Taj! You should at least serve Taj Mahal beer. Also, I don't get the Mexican food options. Why not just be the best at Indian? Would definitely return. read more

One of the more random culinary combos I have encountered- they serve Indian and Greek food. But as the name implies, it's more Indian than Greek, with the majority of the menu being Indian. We had an appetizer platter (just OK), and then I had the Chicken Tikka, which was pretty good. Onion Kulcha was good as well. They ask you your spice preference from 1-10- I selected 5, which I didn't think to be very spicy. The person I was with said that he did not recommend the 10 though- apparently "there's a price to pay later" for that. Service was decent, though they ran out of Kingfisher beer- an Indian place runs out of Kingfisher? Would go back if I'm ever in Dothan again though. read more

Very diverse clientele from an LGBTQ couple to a large Indian family (10+ people) to a guy dressed head to toe in camouflage. The music was rock and roll Christmas music and they had a DJ booth decorated for Christmas. The rest of the decor was modern rustic and they have a full bar in back as well as a spice store. And guess what? Everyone was enjoying themselves all in the same place with no controversy on Christmas. Staff were super nice. The choice of music is ridiculous. You automatically think you're in a techno dance club! I look around and notice that it feels like the choice of music and level may be more for the staff and not about dining. Very disappointing.
