We have visited the Rochester (Henrietta) restaurant several times. The staff are always friendly, helpful, and responsive. Summer is an excellent hostess and server with a great personality. She even remembers what we have tried in the past! We have enjoyed the sushi (non-spicy and spicy), various ramens (non-spicy and spicy), yakisoba, hibachi, and even matcha cheesecake. Everything is fresh, delicious, and even beautifully plated. The restaurant is nicely decorated and clean (even the restrooms). It is a 10+ out of 10 restaurant. Taisho Bistro is easily one of my favorite spots. Every visit has been consistently great. The sushi is fresh, beautifully plated, and full of flavor. You can really taste the quality in every bite. The rolls are creative but still balanced, and the sashimi always tastes clean and buttery. The cooked dishes are just as good. The ramen broth is rich and comforting, and the hibachi meals are perfectly seasoned and always come out hot. I've had bad service before but this has thrown it over the top. not only did they mess my order 3 times but then they proceeded to charge me for every mistake they made. my wife order chicken and shrimp hibachi lunch special and they only brought her chicken when we asked for shrimp the waiter charged us for a side of shrimp. I asked for a refill on my coke and he brought back 2 waters. every employee including cooks were on their phones just sitting at the bar, when I talked to them about the additional items that were added to bill the waiter said "it's on the bill you have to pay it". this was the absolute worse service I've ever experienced in my entire life. We had a great dinner here on a Thursday night! We made reservations, and were glad we did because they did get busy! It looks like they do a lot of takeout as well! The menu is really extensive, lots to try for even those who don't like traditional Japanese, or haven't tried it! There are pictures to assist with items you are unfamiliar with! I REALLY liked my cucumber avocado rolls, definitely the best sushi I have ever had! I also had the hibachi and it was great! My first visit left me with mixed feelings. I liked the way their menu was organized, with pictures showing the various foods I'm not familiar with. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and the service is very prompt. Towards the end of the meal, you could tell the servers wanted to go because they kept trying to take our plates that we were still working on. To be fair, it was getting late, but the restaurant was still open for another 40 mins. We got numerous menu items so here is a list of the items and how each tasted. The Seaweed Salad was standard, but the portions were large. The Miso Soup was very bland and there were NO discernible pieces of tofu or seaweed in my entire bowl. Also, there was a piece of carrot in my Miso Soup which made zero sense and made me feel like they accidentally dropped a carrot in my soup. The Baby Octopus Salad tasted fine, but the texture of the octopus seemed a bit mushy, which was off putting. We ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Spicy Crab Roll. Let me say this... the Spicy Crab Roll was FANTASTIC. Probably the best crab roll I've had in the state of New York! I liked that the spicy crispy filling wasn't just a layer on top, but they actually dispersed the crispy part throughout the entire inside of the roll. The flavor was amazing and was hands down the best part of the meal. The Rainbow Roll was very good and I liked the size of the roll. Next came the Miso Ramen and the Chicken Fried Rice. The egg in the ramen was cooked well and the pork was tender. Overall it was good, but nothing special. I wanted to love it because the portion was great and the dish looked tasty, but I just didn't LOVE it. The fried rice dish was another high note of the meal. The chicken was very tender and almost melted in my mouth which I loved. The portion of the rice was impressive as well. Overall, my take away notes: go here for sushi and fried rice. Absolutely do not get Miso soup. Don't go here even and hour and a half before closing because they will try to rush you out and take your food while you're still eating. read more

Agree with the extensive menu (and love the pictures which really can help people make a decision). Came here for a lunch special on Saturday. We tried the BBQ squid lunch and the sashimi platter. We were started with the typical salad and one miso soup (which was different than usual miso soups; no tofu and/or seaweed, but there was carrot and daikon in the base). The BBQ squid was similar to the appetizer that they have, just with some kimchi and rice. I wish that they grilled it/had stronger flavor. It was just alright to me. The sashimi was tasty though. We were seated quickly on a Wednesday night around 6pm. We immediately knew what we wanted and ordered 2 garden salads, the rocky shrimp appetizer and 4 speciality rolls. The salad and app came out relatively quickly but our server was so quick all night that when she stopped at our table we were never able to ask for things like forks or more napkins. Garden salads were your basic Japanese salad but actually very big! The rocky shrimp was our absolute favorite but I wish it was a bigger size because for $10.95 you get about 12 small sized shrimp. The 2 rolls I was super excited for was the Legend roll (lobster topped with seared scallops) and Akazaru roll (tempura shrimp topped with seared steak). The legend roll was good but the flavors didn't really blow me away. It had a nice kick to it from the jalapeño and siracha. The Akazaru roll was a major disappointment, the steak was essentially raw... it was not appetizing at all and all you could taste was the butane smokiness from the crème brûlée torch they used. The other 2 rolls we got were basic, and kind of flavorless. The service was meh, food was OK and the bill was $100. I expected more for what we paid for but at least the rocky shrimp was delicious. I tried their food and it was simply horrible. Nothing seemed right, their miso soup was bland and lacked flavor. The sashimi salad wasn't even a salad, it lacked greens and lacked the appeal of a sashimi salad. The fish was all cubed up and there was very little dressing and a whole lot of fried crab, if it was even that. They also cut corners, I ordered scallop sashimi which is almost $10. They take one scallop and slice it into 4 little rounds. Their food is also way overpriced and you get very little. Not my kind of restaurant. I will never eat there again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

We've all been to hibachi restaurants. We've seen the onion volcano, we've seen the shrimp tail toss. We've probably instagrammed the egg spinning. Hibachi is not just dinner, it's dinner and a show. That's why hibachi is usually expensive. But wouldn't it be nice to get the dinner without the show? Enter Taisho Bistro. Taisho Bistro has a large hibachi setup in the back of the restaurant so the customers can eat hibachi food without seeing the show or paying for the show. It's actually genius. We had steak, chicken, steak & chicken, and sushi. I was the sushi person, but I got to sample everyone else's meals. It's the perks of going out with larger parties. I found the steak to be cooked to perfection, the chicken warm and soft. My sushi was delicious and fresh, a pleasant surprise considering it was my first Rochester sushi experience. The entrees, mine included, came with a choice of soup or salad. I took the salad because I'm obsessed with ginger dressing. The hot entrees all came with onions, mushrooms, and zucchini. It was all the food benefits of traditional hibachi without the entertainment. And best of all, no one paid more than 15 dollars for their meal!!! Was in the area visiting our daughter and her girlfriend. Japanese was just the ticket for a light lunch. Nicely deocarted spot in a strip mall. Plenty of seating, and a view of the chefs. The menu is HUGE! The deal of the decade is the 9 piece sushi/sashimi platter with miso soup for only $11.95! We also ordered a few takoyaki apps. Everything was fresh and well made. We also ordered some of the "stars" sake, which is sparkling. If we lived in Rochester, we'd be regular customers, that's for sure. read more

The interior decor is modern with colored LED lighting. The waitstaff was courteous and welcoming to our family that included a toddler. They do have high chairs for the little ones. There is plenty of parking and easy access to Jefferson Blvd. The menu is extensive and separated into major categories, like sushi, noodles, sashimi, bento box, etc. All the menu items have pictures, thumbnail size, instead of a description. I found this very helpful. The service was very quick. You could either pop in and out for a meal or linger, your choice. The prices were in line with other Japanese restaurants, maybe a little cheaper because you are not paying for much atmosphere. We will return. read more

The reason for 1star is because there is no option for 0 star. Okonomiyaki is very common. Somehow it's the highest level of taste in this restaurant. Mackerel tastes like the fish has dead one year ago. Takoyaki taste a way much better than a stone. The only difference is that it has squid inside. Ramen is even worse than my homecook. The pork katsu don is 10X stweeter than it should be. Omelet egg rice I finished within one spoon. And the prok katsu curry is the worst curry I have ever eaten. Quite an extensive menu! Lots of intriguing sushi rolls, noodles, and also bento box's!! I got the teriyaki salmon bento box. Comes with sushi, dumplings, fried spring roll, rice and the main item of your choice. It's quite a filling variety, also comes with your choice of soup or salad. Each item has a unique dipping sauce, yum! We got extra of the sauce for the dumplings as they drizzle it over them and I mean who doesn't love sauce?! Two stars for their Chicken and Rib Eye Steak Hibachi and that's about it! Somehow I cannot get myself to enjoy sushi when it's not made by good Japanese sushi chefs or those who are trained by them. And it is so obvious that Taisho Bistro is not an authentic Japanese restaurant and their chef(s) is not trained well. Thank goodness cooking Hibachi dishes do not require such training. We ordered a Hibachi dish as well as shrimp tempura and three rolls: salmon/avocado, Phily and shrimp tempura rolls. Let's start with their shrimp tempura. It combined two shrimps with four pieces of vegetables all made in tempura style and served with a sauce. It was lacking the lightness and authenticity of tempura. Instead they were heavily coated and very oily. The rolls were not oily but not great either. We selected two side salads which our server forgot to bring. We took the two salads home. Each salad consisted of a little iceberg lettuce, one cherry tomato and a small piece of carrot. The sauce was Thousand Island with something mixed into it. Prices are okay if the food was authentic Japanese, but we know that is not the case. Apparently, Taisho is owned by three individuals, Chinese. Well, at least one co-owner is Chinese: Andy Huang. Ownership is not the issue. The issue is they don't have good Japanese or Japanese trained chefs making the food. So, I will be waiting for Shiki to reopen. read more

Tsushima Bistro is the first Japanese restaurant in Rochester to promote itself as an izakaya restaurant. It's an exciting addition to Rochester's Japanese scene (even though I think it's Chinese owned). The ambience is modern and trendy with pink recessed lighting and Japanese fixtures (Shogun armor & Chinese character pattern on seats). The open concept kitchen is visible to guests, adding intimacy to the restaurant. The Japanese pop music playing in the background is somewhat distracting, but does add to the ambience and almost transports you out of Rochester. The menu is all-encompassing. From appetizers, sushi, noodles to hibachi and everything in between, you'll find something that piques your interest. Jack of all trades, but master of none? Maybe a bit. I've ordered their rolls and they are just okay. I've found them to be a bit inconsistent in terms of size and content. Each individual roll is often a different size. Not a big deal, but still. I've stuck with their Curry Udon Soup. It's a flavor bomb (most likely MSG laden) that comes with bite size pieces of beef and potato. The rich broth complements the soft udon nicely. I've also tried their Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) which was good (and very filling). The yakitori menu is also nice and maybe the only place in Rochester you can get it. My girlfriend tried their ramen twice and both times she thought it was just okay. Overall, I like Taisho Bistro. The hip ambience, diverse menu and prompt service make it a good option for Japanese food. Pricing is fair and portions are good. Not a bad place to get sushi - it was average I would say. I placed a to-go order recently for 2 spicy crab rolls and an order of veggie spring rolls. The staff was very friendly and ordering was easy. As I'm currently pregnant, cooked sushi is not my first choice but I was craving it so bad that I decided on the spicy crab rolls. My only issue with the rolls was that the crab was shredded (kind of stringy) compared to a piece of imitation crab like you see in a California roll. The spring rolls were ok - they were a little too greasy though. All in all my opinion was not bad but it's not my top pick for sushi. read more

I've been coming here on and off since February 2019 and somehow never really got the chance to do a review. The restaurant is definitely on the hip side which is more appealing towards younger crowd/college students. The restaurants décor is very cool and the restaurant itself is very clean. I've never had a bad experience with Taisho Bistro dining with them over a dozen times now. What impresses me is the sushi has always been fresh and I've never had an issue with any fish being off. Almost every menu item has a picture attached to it which my friends say is very helpful. As for me, I find it can be overcrowded and sometimes the food doesn't always come out looking like the picture which is fine. I've had most of their appetizers and I always tend to gravitate towards the Taisho Lobster and the Salmon Torch. As for my main entrees, I've always ordered sushi and a couple special rolls. The rolls always come out looking stunning and tasty as well. My most recent visit, I was very surprised and pleased the server mentioned to me that they've just received their order of uni (sea urchin). At $8 for two pieces, I put in a couple orders and wished I had more stomach room for more. This is a solid restaurant that offers great food and I ought to visit more frequently. read more

Sushi is fresh, great texture and not too much rice. The saba mackarel was juicy and fatty, as was the flavorful yakitori. Most of the food was of great quality, but the yakitori and mackarel pourtion sizes were small. The ramen here was underwhelming and lacked richness, I'd skip it next time. Anyway, I was promptly seated but it took a few minutes for the non-busy waiters to flip a coin and one to come over. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bento box which included soup, salad, kimchi-like veggies, rice and chicken. Then I waited, noticing that the soup was brought to the cook window halfway through the wait. Thus, the miso soup was cool when delivered as a box component. Everything tasted great especially the chicken and kimchi. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants around! The sushi is so fresh and the rolls are unique. The kani roll is my absolute favorite. The miso soup is very different than other restaurants but it is super fresh and unique. We got bacon wrapped scallops for the first time recently and I was not expecting much, but it honestly might have been better than the sushi! It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was heavenly. Last night we tried Taisho based on the recommendation of a co-worker and fellow Yelper. Our expectations were exceeded!!! The restaurant was surprisingly busy for 6pm on a Sunday night. We were seated right away. The menus at first look were overwhelming. Lots of pictures and words but after spending a couple minutes with the menu it became very clear. Loved the description of the item along with the picture. We ordered the pork dumplings to start. By far the best dumplings I've ever had. Tender and delicious!! We ordered 5 rolls which came on a wood boat. Nice visual. The crab roll, dragon roll, amazing tuna roll, Jen roll, and the Kami roll were all outstanding!
