iDance Vancouver - HULA....oh such a beautiful class! #FeatureFriday

I've gone to this studio 3 times (hip hop, heels, street jazz) and the now closed Kits location…read moreonce (hip hop). Thoroughly enjoyed each class. The studio is airy and clean. They offer free de-caf free at the front and plenty of room to sit and wait for your class. There's such a wide range of selection for types of dances that there is one for everyone. You can choose what level you want and the ones I went to were all intro/open so they were beginner-friendly. Every instructor has been very nice. It's a judgement free zone and a great way to have fun!

My friend J went quarter before 3 and I showed up little late when the dance session started. I wish there was a clear instruction before walking in. I was confused whether to take shoes off to change to indoor shoes or go into studios without my shoes and turns out I had to change to indoor shoes after arrival. Next step was filling out application form and if there was any medical history. I was ready for the session once it was finished. There was so much energy and the 90's hip hop was so perfect for this. Everyone wasn't first timers except for me and J. My instructor showed steps from slow speed and then the pace became quicker. It was little difficult to follow the steps and which direction to swing or to bend my legs. I nearly fell for the first 30 minutes , and then fell on the floor because of my poor balance. My only way to catch up is to observe my instructor or other people to improve dance steps. It was a fantastic work out for sure. Because there was only 1 fan, I felt very sweaty and humid in the dance studio. I only paid $10 for the first lesson and it was so worth it. Staff were nice and friendly. **Note: bring your old runners for the dance. Make sure they're clean pair. They have small change rooms so you can change into loose clothes. Water bottle is a must to bring. They even have a water station next to reception desk. I found myself overwhelmed that some moves were more of advanced level. Everyone else moved so fast I couldn't follow their speed. I found myself with a small bruise the next day.

My love of dance and my less than stellar dancing shoes (that being, my feet) required me to…read moreconsider taking professional dancing lessons if I were to really make an effort in becoming the dancing queen I have hoped for....or some version thereof! Fortunately for me, Urban Beat Dance Company boasts some of the best and most critically acclaimed dance teachers around, founders Graeme and Elizabeth Oxendale, amongst others. While the school offers a variety of different dance classes at different levels, from hip hop, funky swing and pussycat doll style, my boyfriend and I were yearning to learn some sexy Latin style salsa dance. The group dance environment that allows everyone, single or otherwise the opportunity to dance with a partner, is a successful teaching method. I have to admit though, that as another half of a couple who doesn't get to see her other half as often as she'd like to, I would now prefer to do private lessons instead of dancing with often nervous and sweaty strangers. Regardless of that, the classes were always fun, entertaining and humbling and honestly, if you're looking for a partner (of any sort...) this really is a great environment for meeting new people! The classes are very well priced and offer the highest form of flexibility to suit your very busy schedules. THE place to go for couples dance!

After a lifetime of being the shy AV geek who would always be happy to DJ rather than dance, I…read moredecided it was time to change that. A google search for swing dance Vancouver led me to Urban Beat's website where I signed up for both West Coast Swing Level 1 as well Club Freestyle. After a brief panic attack the night before my first class (what am I doing going to a partner dancing class without a partner when I can't dance????) I walked in and was soooo glad I did. Instruction was great, partners rotate in Swing Dance class so it's a great way to meet people, and the dancing is just plain fun. Extra bonus is if you sign up for Tuesday or Sunday class, you can attend the other no charge, gives schedule flexibility and or extra value. 6 months later having progressed through 3 levels of swing classes (2 months each) I'd have to say it's one of the best decisions I made.... which is why I still go to expand my dancing abilities. The Club Freestyle has also proved useful having found myself on a dance floor or two, as well as adding style to my swing dance. Highly highly highly recommended!

I like that they have such a wide range of classes: Barre, yoga, Pilates, Zumba and more. People of all ages, levels and body types will feel welcome here. I also like that they supply the mats and equipment, and tea so you can relax and chat after class.

They aren't pushy about you purchasing anything but are really knowledgable if you have questions. The studio itself is very clean, the bathrooms are as well. The two owners are approachable and friendly, willing to have a quick chat but also content to just let you be. There's more than enough yoga supplies offered - mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and even supplies to whipe down the mats after class. The classes I've taken here don't use most of the props but it's nice to know that if the class dose start to need them I don't have to go buy my own. The late class on Tuesday is usually full or close to, I recomend saving a spot throught their website if your not close. The teacher is very knowlageable and she offers lots of way to make poses easier or harder so you never feel left out. There's usually some kind of tea on offer, it is a nice touch that most other studios I've been to don't offer. Sometimes it's odd sounding flavours but I haven't had anything that didn't taste good. The parking is weird, there's no times on the paid spots so you don't know if you need to pay to park all the time or not. There is free parking around but can be hard to find. There is also an underground parkade in the building but I don't know if it's paid or not (I'll update this if I find out)

As a yoga fan; I love going to different classes when I travel and had not been to Yogacara in…read moreseveral years so decided - with legs that craved some serious stretching after a long hike the previous day - to attend a class. Booing is easy through the Mindybody app and classes are reasonably priced at around $20 US for a 75 minute class. We did the Vinyasa class. It's a small studio with village views and class sizes are limited . We had 10 people in our class. Everything is already laid out rest to go - Mats and blankets and props are encouraged. The class was very good. The teacher asked beforehand if there was anything she needed to know before class which is important when teaching new students and her practice was very good, taught very well and very safe. In the years since I have been here, I became a yoga teacher with two credentials and it has given me more insight into practice and instruction- and I have realized that many cues are often not the safest such as pigeon but this instructor was great and very well versed in sage alignment. The only thing I don't love and I have noticed it on both visits as well as my daughter picking up on the vibe, is that it does not have a warm or friendly vibe. I cannot pin point it but it does not encourage me to come back - but maybe it's because it's a class full of strangers due to this being a tourist spot . Small point as the studio and instruction is great. I felt much better after the class and ready for another hike !

When I recieved no response during the day, I went in at the start of the evening class to asked what I can do about a credit. The instructor didn't seem to belive me to be sick and asked me to join the class or write to the owner but that I had missed the chance for a refund. Unfortuatnely a couple days later I tested positive for Covid. I wrote Emily, the business owner, with a screen shot of the google listing. She implied that I was faking it and trying to get out of the class with a loophole and said, "No, we did not get your voicemail and I do not recognize that number. I've been in touch with Google to see what happened. We don't take voicemail at this time." Then she berated me for harassing her employee. Follow up from Emily: "I've processed a refund to your credit card, upon your demands, in the hopes that you do not return to the studio."
