Greg was a great host - and after a long while riding bikes on the famous "Wine" trail our bike rental place mentioned, our first stop was Taft, and it was a great choice. We had an initial tasting, and all of them were amazing! I preferred the Zinfandel they had, and it's also Greg's favorite as well. Been to Taft Street Winery a few times for tastings and it's always a good time. It's small, personable and family owned and operated. Sherry and Greg are both wonderful! I've been helped by both and they are passionate and knowledgeable about both the wines and the history of Taft Street. During my initial visit, Sherry told me the story behind their name "Taft Street". The winery actually started in a garage on Taft Ave in the Rockridge district of Oakland. This was really significant to me because I've worked in Rockridge for years, and I've often driven through or walked down Taft on numerous occasions during the years. It's amazing to think that I've probably passed by the home that this winery was created in. Taft street produces both red and white wines that are small lot and limited production. They serve tasting flights of either all white, all red, or a mix. Although I enjoy both their red and white wines, their white wines really shine here. When it comes to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, they produce some of the best in the region. If you're a fan of crisp and mineral-ly whites, then you certainly will adore Taft's white wines. They are perfect for light sipping on a warm day and very well balanced. Their tasting bar is quaint, intimate, and quite social. From the front of the winery, you wouldn't guess how large their back patio is. They've got several picnic tables back there and they also have a large space that they use for special events and a live music stage. People often bring picnics and hang out back there while they enjoy the wine and weather. It's a local's hangout too. What I also enjoy is that you can drop by and have wine by the glass here. Bottle prices and tasting fees are also extremely reasonable. They do a pre-poured wine flight style tasting, but they are great at keeping you engaged during the tasting and offering great tasting notes and descriptions of the wines. Taft Street Winery is one of my favorite wineries not only because their wines are amazing, but they always provide the best experience possible. The staff is absolutely wonderful. They are all very knowledgeable about the wines, the area and provide great conversation and overall amazing experience. The tasting room is very quaint and includes the tasting bar and a small seating area. They have a large patio with plenty of outdoor seating. They are also dog friendly, which is always a win in my book! Tastings are $15 and they also have wines by the glass which are around $10-$12 as well as wines by the bottle. I've been to Taft Street twice -- once for a special event and once for wine tasting with friends -- and both times have been absolutely delightful! First of all, the staff here are super welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed learning about their wines in a laidback, casual atmosphere. This is not a stuffy winery, which is refreshing! Secondly, their wines are delicious! The winemaker is a woman (!!!) and she's doing a great job. On my recent tasting, I enjoyed the sauvignon blanc (so crisp!), the rose (of pinot noir), and all the reds I tried. Me and my friends loved the grenache so much that we each left with a bottle. :) Finally, they have a beautiful patio to enjoy the lovely West County spring weather. There are umbrellas for shade and they allow you to bring in food. I was impressed with their COVID protocols and everything was clean and safe. I can't recommend Taft Street Winery highly enough. They have a small patio area in case you want to bring nash-ables. Barrel Tasting Event with the Wine Road 2017. The place was very simple. Got a little history lesson from my bartender. Where did they get the name? Well the OG wine makers were making their wine in a garage in Oakland on Taft Street. They have a picture of the founders and the garage on Taft Street. Interesting huh! The place was fun. The outdoor area had games that you would play on your yard with friends. Looks like a wonderful place to hang out with your friends and just have a great time with wine too! What did they have for their barrel tasting. It was new grapes to me: Skikos Pinot and Winkler Pinot. It was good. I enjoyed it. The tasting room has a wonderful​ cork stools. Went here to start the Route 116 wine club members appreciation event as my friend is a member here. Very casual & inviting tasting room! They pour quite a few wines on a daily bases. The tasting room staff is friendly & knowledgeable and very attentive to all customers no matter how busy they are. They have outdoor seating and bocce ball on the grounds. Very peaceful & serene setting. The wines are very reasonably priced, their wine club is priced right & you can mix & match wines in your shipment. And they will be the first to tell you what wines are perfect to drink now and what is ok to drink but would be even better if cellared for a few year. Having that knowledge & sharing it with the customers in the tasting room is great! A real and unexpected find in Sebastapol, the wines here would easily command $5-$10 more a bottle if Taft Street winery were located in a more conventionally Sonoma wine country-y area of the county. Not that I am complaining. The tasting room is charming, modern, and well designed and not a bit pretentious. The outdoor patio has a bocce court. Wines are approachable, drinkable, and there are no butter or fruit bombs here. The winemaker has carefully crafted a consistent personality through all the wines, Pinot Gris, rose of Pinot or Syrah. These are smart wines for when you you just want an easy drinking wine. Translation: you are not cellaring these wines. You are going to bring them to friends' homes for afternoon barbecues and drink them with takeout. And everyone will be happy and you will be stoked with yourself because you dropped less than $20/bottle. read more

Came here with a group of four last weekend. I'd been wanting to go to Taft Street for a long time due to their affordable wines and large variety. The tasting room is small and quaint. I love any tasting room that has a winery dog (Taj is so friendly and cute!) or let's you bring your own. Props to them on that front. Unfortunately our experience was not as great as I had hoped. The man pouring our wine showed no interest in teaching us anything about Taft Street. I learned zero on where their wine was grown, any producing methods, what foods would go well with the wine, what are his favorites -- nothing. He simply poured the wine and pretty much ignored us. So, I'd say there wasn't much "experience" happening there. What made it almost worst was that the older man pouring wine for a different group right next to us was super friendly and very enthusiastic towards them. Their experience looked/sounded a lot better than ours. We did enjoy a nice picnic outside and a round of bocce ball. We bought a bottle to enjoy on the hot day and overall had a good time, but it was mostly due to just enjoying our own company. What Taft lacked in experience they made up for in affordable tasty wine. I would say I'd maybe recommend Taft to fellow wine lovers, I would just hope they'd have someone who is more passionate about their product pouring. read more

Cute little wine bar near Graton in Sonoma Valley with five tastes for five bucks. We had excellent service with a chatty Bay Area native at the bar. He taught us the story of how Taft got its name (from making wine on Taft street in Oakland), how the wine started in a garage, and how Napa should only be visited if one is in need of auto parts. Overall, the Rosé was my favorite but all their wines were fantastic. Plus, they have live music on the weekend and turn into more of a wine bar. I've always enjoyed their wines but they need to train their employees better. I was in conversation with my friend on the patio and was interrupted by a tasting room staff walking around with her knitting in hand. She proceeded to stay at our table for close to 20 minutes and my friend was too polite to stop listening to her. Her personal hardships became her topic of conversation and it ended up ruining my experience there. Attended one of Taft's free concerts yesterday. Fabulous! Sit out under the Japanese Maples in the shade with a bottle of wine and enjoy! We love Taft: their taste-price ratio was so high we joined their Wine Club on our first visit (and it's our only wine club since we are thrifty)! We love that they let you chose between reds and whites, and their Pinot Noirs are some of the best in California. And they are so friendly they make you feel like family when you visit, and their wine club parties are something we look forward to 2x a year. And we like that they are not pretentious at all and put the money into making amazing wine instead of fancy stuffy serving rooms. There are lots of wineries to choose from in Sonoma County, just make sure you don't miss this one! Do you dream of a romantic escape to a late 19th century library furnished with oak bookshelves and velvet chairs stained with the aroma of fine cigars? What about a spring time pony ride through a field of elderberry blossom? While Taft street winery is possess neither pony nor library, they manage to conjure a grand collection of experiences using only the wizardry of exquisitely crafted wines. Their Pinots are beautiful (that's the library), their Chardonnay's are unique and delightful (that's the elderflower meadow), I won't even get started on the Medallion. The staff, without exception, are welcoming and knowledgeable. I've never felt brushed off or ignored here, and the picnic area is a perfect place to bring a lunch, order a bottle and watch the seasons change (or an occasional music show). This Winery is my favorite in the area, in addition to having never put out a bottle I didn't like, the atmosphere and people are down to earth and lovely, and the prices are scandalously reasonable for the quality and craftsmanship of the wines. read more

I've been to Taft Street Winery 3 or 4 times now, and have always had a great experience. We particularly enjoy the Pinot Gris, which we try to always have in the wine fridge, as well as the Garagistes Pinot Noir. But, beyond the wines, the service in the tasting room is always awesome! The woman in the tasting room (I feel awful for not remembering her name, I'm sorry!) is always extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I most recently visited with two friends from out of town who had never been to Sonoma or Napa, and knew fairly little about wine, and she was so welcoming and informative while answering their questions and chatting with us. The boyfriend and I did a whirlwind trip through the Bay Area for spring break. I only pretend to be fancy, and he's not complicated in his wine preferences either. So we came to Taft Street Winery as our first stop in Wine Country. Kaitlyn was very understanding of our n00b wine status. She patiently explained all of the wines to us and didn't judge me when I drank my wine rather than spit it out. Usually I like to see where the grapes are grown, which is why I normaly go for tasting rooms on the vinyards but truly if the wine speaks to me I could care less if it was made in a garage. Which by the way is how Taft Street got its start. Taft Street makes a wonderful Pino Gris. It is my current favoriet Sonoma County white wine. Its fruity and sweet but refreshing and tart all at the same time. Yum. The tasting room is small but there is a bocci court behind where you can sip your new bottle and toss some balls around. $5 tasting fee, which is waved with the purchase of a bottle. read more

This was our 2nd stop on a Russian River Valley tour in Sonoma and my favorite wines of the day. I loved the clean, open space of the tasting room. A lot of natural lighting and neutral, warm colors. I can't remember the name of the gentleman that helped our group but he had a fast pour. Barely tasting one before he was ready to move you to the next. That was my only slight gripe. The wines made up for it. I'm usually a red lover to the core but walked away with their Sauvignon Blanc - crisp and light and delicious on this early afternoon of leisure. There really wasn't a wine that I did not like. I would definitely recommend it if you are touring the Russian River area of Sonoma County. read more
