    Tacos Neza business card.
    Daniel B.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The Tacos Neza food truck (technically, a food trailer, hauled by an SUV) visited our apartment complex in Chapel Hill this past Tuesday. While not as fancy and polished-looking as other food trucks (it was also relatively loud because of their generator/compressor), Tacos Neza has it where it counts -- the food and service. I'd put Tacos Neza's food up against any other food truck's food. It's that good. These guys can definitely hold their own. Tacos Neza offers tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. During our visit, there were about a dozen different taco varieties and over a half-dozen torta options. The friendly lady at the order window told us they were selling special 3 for $10 taco plates with special tacos $1 extra each. We got one of the plates with two special tacos, so $12, and doing math backwards, that meant the torta, which we also got, was $8, since our total bill was $20 after tax, but before tip. Here's what we got: * Three Taco Plate ($10) - marinated pork (pastor), beef tongue (lengua, +$1), and mixed steak (asada) and chorizo sausage (campechano, +$1) tacos * Niurka Torta ($8) - milanesa de pollo (breaded chicken steak), sausage, ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, jalapeno, and mayo with a side of fries All of our food was made to order. There was only one couple in line ahead of us so our order was cooked up relatively quick. The tacos and torta were packed in foil-lined foam containers, each including spicy red salsa on the side. The food smelled great and as soon as we got back inside and opened the boxes, we knew it was going to be good. The food looked terrific. Portions were generous and the presentation was better than expected. The tacos were served the traditional Mexican way, on corn tortillas with plenty of chopped white onion and cilantro. Also included was lime, cucumber, radish, a small block of queso fresco (a welcome surprise), and a chile toreado (a seasoned and fried jalapeno). The torta was stacked high and they made sure to include packets of ketchup for the fries. Yum. Everything was delicious. All of the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The hot sauce and chile toreado brought the heat, particularly the latter. The taco meats were nicely seasoned, tender, juicy, and tasty. The lengua was exceptional in terms of both taste and texture. The quality was good and they cooked it just right. The pastor was marinated well and the campechano was finely mixed (probably the best mixed campechano I've had). Also, I really enjoyed the accoutrements. That was an extra touch that set Tacos Neza apart from other taco food trucks I've tried. The Niurka torta was wonderful. I highly recommend it. I asked the lady behind the counter which torta came packed with the most stuff and she steered me towards the Niurka, describing it as their Mexican version of the Cuban sandwich. Sure, a Cuban on steroids. Just take a look at my pictures, especially the cross section. My favorite parts of the torta were the crispy ends of milanesa, the sizable portions of sausage (essentially plain hot dog), and the fresh, ripe pieces of avocado. Simply put, this was a savory and filling sandwich, consisting of several delectable ingredients, that left me feeling very satisfied. Service was great. I'd order everything we had again. Some improvements Tacos Neza can make: 1. Allow online ordering. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, this option is more important than ever. 2. Put prices on the menu. That way, customers don't have to ask how much different items cost. 3. Provide itemized receipts. The automatically-emailed receipt I received from Square simply showed a "Custom Amount" of $20. On its trailer and business card, Tacos Neza uses an image of Bart Simpson holding a taco and a torta. If the business gets too popular, they might have to remove Bart due to copyright infringement. You can find Tacos Neza on the following social media platforms: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TacosNeza919/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TacosNeza Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tacosneza919/ Enjoy.

Ordered before I got gas, food was ready by the time I was done. Food was so good and I love that they put out plenty of sauce!

El Chapo torta - steak and chorizo, cheese, avocado, lettuce, mayo, and jalapeno with fries on the side

I love a good torta and this truck was great! I was probably their first customer for dinner and kind of had my heart set on a Chavo Del 8 (ham, etc) but they were out of ham. Instead I went with an El Chapo instead (steak and chorizo, cheese, avocado, lettuce, mayo, and jalapeno with fries on the side). Torta was amazing! It was a little messy, hard to pick up initially, and pieces would fall out, but it was super tasty. Paper around both halves would really help to handle it and keep it in one piece.. There was one piece of aluminum foil under the torta but I think I would have made a bigger mess using it for the first half while keeping the second half intact. It could have worked if the aluminum foil was cut in half so each half had it's own foil. The fries were a huge highlight too! Too often, fries are forgettable and loaded with salt. I even had the idea to ask for no salt when I placed the order but I forgot. They were very crispy and had some sort of seasoning or breading on them which was really good. There must have been some salt but I couldn't detect it so I was very happy. There was a hot sauce that was very good and went well with both the torta and fries. They packed in a set of plastic utensils and a napkin and there were a couple of packets of ketchup (not a ketchup fan, didn't use).

Mixed taco option. From left going clockwise: Carnita, pastor, chicken. Reasonable price ~$13/15

They are not exaggerating when they say fresh ingredients and great quality food. Had the quesabirria (it comes with steak, not just cheese (think a quesadilla/taco hybrid) and the consome-- the dipping broth/soup) and the pastor (chunks of fresh pineapple). They even give you a roasted whole chili pepper and a little roasted green onion. The orange somewhat creamy sauce is very good and perfectly spicy (numbs/tingles tongue and throat, watery eyes-- may be too spicy for some). Got our food within 2-7 mins of ordering (ordered twice!!). Very friendly and all-around a really, really good experience. Highly recommend trying this truck.

Tacos were awesome - fresh and tasty. I was in town for 3 weeks and ended up going here at least half a dozen times for lunch. Be sure to ask for the spicy salsas that they keep in the fridge in the trailer!

I usually rotate between the tacos, enchiladas, and molcajetes, and while the tacos themselves are just okay, the overall experience is solid. The fresh chips are easily some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant (warm and crisp). Add queso to those chips and it really seals the deal. They more than make up for the tacos being a bit underwhelming and are honestly reason enough to come back. This is a great neighborhood spot if you're looking for authentic flavors, generous portions, and excellent chips and dips (biggest downside is no liquor aka no margaritas). I was really one mayonnaise filled torta away from missing out on my favorite Mexican restaurant of Cary. The food is some of the freshest and most authentic in the area, and is consistently spot on. Forget heavy burritos or overly sauced enchiladas, this place is the real deal. When you come to Esmeralda Grill, you should really focus on the meat heavy dishes, whether it be via land or sea. There are so many different options to choose from, from both categories. When thinking seafood, expect the full fish. If you find yourself with the fresh grilled tilapia, you will receive a delicious whole fish that tastes as if it was caught that morning. It is such a fantastic option. I also appreciate the camarones a la diabla, or Diablo shrimp. The shrimp are plump and juicy, the spice of the dish is excites your taste buds and is a great dish. My favorite entrees are the land meat dishes though. El Trio Perfecto is my go-to order, it is grilled steak, chicken and pork all on one plate with rice, beans, salad, and tortillas. The Mexican spice rub on the meats is absolutely mouth watering, the flavors are so bold and tasty. The meats are all cooked to perfection and the portions are gigantic. You can make different tacos with the various meats, it is seriously one of my favorite Mexican dishes. I would highly recommend this! Additionally, Esmeralda Grill has so many other wonderful dishes for different flavor profiles. My grandparents are pretty particular about empanadas, but simply cannot get enough of Esmeralda's version. They also make some killer tacos, and some very affordable ones if you were to come on Tuesday! The moral of the story? Don't base your opinion of a restaurant after a single visit. You don't come across a fantastic hole in the wall every day, Esmeralda Grill is one that every Mexican food lover should know!
