The vegetables were way overcooked. The super flour tacos were terrible. The flour shells tasted old and seemed to have a taste like someone threw them onto a hot electric heating coils. Taste was awful. Meat was tasteless. No flavor. I found them almost inedible. In fact I thought I was going to feel ill when I was there. But just stopped eating them. The quesidilla was ok but rather overcooked. Not the best. I will not be back. We tipped the waiter as it was not his fault. But $74 for 3 lunch items was steep for such poor quality meals.

The carne asada was packed with flavor, and pairing it with the bacon-wrapped shrimp took the whole plate to another level. The shrimp tacos were easily some of the best I've had--fresh, loaded with toppings, and that sauce they put on them was seriously out of this world. The service was just as impressive as the food. Everyone was attentive, welcoming, and made the entire experience enjoyable from start to finish. I honestly can't think of a single thing that was lacking. Great food, authentic flavors, phenomenal service, and an overall top-tier experience. If you're in Ankeny, definitely stop by and give El Molcajete a try. Moving here from Arizona and finding a gem like this was a huge win. My wife and I already know this is going to become one of our regular spots. Easily a 10/10 experience! It in a strip mall area and we had driven by multiple times and finally getting in a stop. Our waitress was a sweetheart. I threw my typical questions at her and she was on top of it. Chips were warm and the salsa was perfect. She brought us our drink orders quickly. The blue margarita was a good suggestion. We enjoyed the chips and the drinks. We were taken aback when our meals arrived. Hubby ordered the CA burrito and it was bigger than this forearm! I ordered the steak chimichanga and it also was way more than I imagined it would be. We both enjoyed our meals. We both were so full that I feel like we were going to have to be rolled out of there. The menus are huge. There is no excuse not to find anything. The restaurant is decent sized, with music playing like you come to expect in a Mexican restaurant. I think it was the manager who came out and checked on us to make sure we were doing alright. We decided that we would be back sooner than later. The price was right and it ended up being another meal for both of us.

I got the chimichangas and quesadilla sampler. I hadn't eaten yet when I got my delivery. Not much cheese on the quesadillas, but I'd prefer mass quantities of meat over cheese. The meat in chimichangas is shredded and juicy. They are covered with queso and paired with beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. These two meals will get me through two days of food. Prices are $10-20/meal.
