Tacos Gavilan is normally my go to for late night munchies. This time around I met up with a friend for dinner and she wanted tacos Gavilan. I ordered the super nachos with Al pastor and one Al pastor taco and one lengua. The meats were all tender and flavorful. The nachos were a decent size and can feed two people. It comes with a side of guacamole, sour cream and nacho cheese. They have an unlimited self serve condiment bar with onions, cilantro, salsas, lemons, Jalepenos and beans. Service was excellent. Amazing experience as always. The staff are super friendly and hard working. My order came out almost instantly, I was impressed. Food was great!! Restrooms are available... key code is required. The way it works is (1) you place your order of tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, mulitas, platos, sopes, etc with your choice of meat (asada, al pastor, chorizo, lengua, pollo, carnitas, cabeza, bucho), (2) pay for your order, and (3) wait for your order number to be called. Once called, you walk up to the condiments station to get red (spicy) and/or green (mild) sauces, grilled jalapenos & onions, cilantro & raw onions, beans, and/or lemon... these condiments are all complimentary! Staff was friendly and hospitable. Service was quick. I got the chicken taco and al pastor sope with all the condiments offered plus one Jamaica drink. Drinks are refillable. My first time trying a sope... it's a traditional Mexican dish that is made with a thick, fried masa (corn dough) base. It was different, but a very tasty different... I enjoyed it very much. Tacos Gavilan really stands out with its huge white and red exterior and the logo. I've wanted to try this place out as they are also open slightly later than some of the places. They have a good variety of items from tacos, sopes, tortas and more. I had ordered a variety of tacos, the sope and a chorizo quesadilla. The food is made fresh to order as it takes a little for it to be ready and that's a good thing. You pick and select your salsas and toppings from their salsa bar as well. The salsa verde was very good and I personally really liked the grilled onion and jalapeño as one of their selections as well. The food was good, it definitely satisfy the tacos and Mexican food craving that we all get from time to time. I liked their Al pastor taco and the chorizo quesadilla the best. It was afternoon and only a couple of people were here. Got four asada tacos and my friend got a burrito. Unfortunately the meat on my four tacos was burnt crispy beyond recognition. Unbelievable Charges and Terrible Food - A Total Rip-Off I can't even begin to explain how disappointing my experience was at Tacos Gavilan 887 S Azusa AVE. 91702. To start, I've never encountered a restaurant that charges an additional fee for cooking your meat well done. Not only was this never disclosed upfront, but when I saw the added charge on my bill, I was absolutely shocked. Why on earth would I pay more for simply requesting my steak cooked the way I want it? This seems like an outrageous, money-grabbing tactic that only adds to the frustration of dining here. To make things worse, the food itself was beyond terrible. My steak Meat, even though it was supposedly "well done" (though it was more of a dry, overcooked mess), tasted bland and flavorless. The seasoning, if there was any, was completely nonexistent. It wasn't just my steak either -- my companion's dish was equally uninspiring, with no balance of flavors whatsoever. It's hard to believe a restaurant can charge what they do for food that tastes so underwhelming. And here's another thing: the fact that they didn't disclose their prices for basic customizations (like removing cheese or tomatoes, cooking well done ) should be considered dishonest. I can't help but wonder if they'd start charging for minor requests like swapping out ingredients or making small adjustments to the dish. My daughter passed by here on the last leg of her drive home from Central California. When she does, she always orders from here. It was yet another great to-go order! The restaurant is always clean when we go here. Last night, she brought home two Carne asada tacos each, two chicken tacos each, and 1 Carne asada burrito to share. I love this place because they give you tortilla and your meat choice(s), and that's it for the tacos. The rest of the toppings are individually packed, and you can take as much as you like, no extra charge. The toppings we get are the green salsa, beans, lemons, and sometimes the green hot peppers. The ordering was simple, I got my lengua, buche, and carne asada tacos on Taco Tuesday with discount. The salsa bar is a lil bit on the disappointing side. The cilantros are premixed with onions, and the salsa are pre-packaged. I understand the pre-packaged salsa is more sanitary but lacks the traditional feel and taste. Review is based on a delivery: We order from Tacos Gavilan weekly via Uber Eats/Door Dash. And each time, no matter the quantity of food, we always get 2-4 salsas in the bag. We've ordered $50.00 worth of food for multiple people and only received a few salsas and never exactly what you actually picked. After going in person a few times I noticed that salsa and condiments were fully self serve, so I figured on my next order I'd just ask the driver to grab some extra. So I tried to ask my delivery driver to get 10 salsas. ( we ordered a torta, sope, and 6 tacos). I don't think it's unreasonable. However they gave the delivery driver such a hard time he had to call me. They refused to give him salsas and demanded that I pay $6.60 for the 10 salsas. The staff is not nice to you if you don't look Latino. My husband just got back after being nice enough to pick up the food. He doesn't speak Spanish but I do so I have had no issues picking up. However, the staff ignored him after he presented that he was there to pick up the order for about 15 minutes. Never had an issue like this in the past. I usually ordered from Taco el Gavilan closer to my house, the one by the 10 fwy, and I usually grab my order through drive thru. I ordered about 10 min prior arrival, from Yelp app. When I got to this location, I realized there was no drive thru, and I had to go in to pick up my order. When I went in, I saw my order already behind the cashier. I still waited around for about 10 min with 4 people in front of me. I understand with the longer time period and the safety policy during this COVID19. But if I knew there were no drive thru and that I had to stand in line for that long, I would find another alternative (it was tough going out the car with three small kids in a hot day, in masks). After it was my turn, the staff put my order on the table specified for drive thru (which I like). When I got home and opened my order, I was dissapointed that the condiment just enough for one taco order (I ordered 4 tacos and I chose multiple condiments through Yelp app order).
