Tacos el tio a Chicago based taqueria chain available throughout the city and suburbs. At this location, I've had issues with their tortillas, so pick wisely. Not the freshest. From the texture it'd seem they make in house or buy from a shop that makes it for them. I've had some corn tortillas that were uneven in texture. These days tho it's just flour for me! Al pastor is prepared on the trompo (spit grill) but they don't put pineapple shreds in the mix, they'll cut a strip or two (if you're lucky) and include that with your order. I don't speak Español properly but if I did, I want extra at least for every bite! Their arroz Rojo is flavorful (the red rice served with meals). I could eat a bowl of this by itself. Fun fact: red rice is a component of many cultures. We all make a version with tomatoes and other ingredients. Cabeza & lengua are worth the stomach space. I'm a bit preferential to head. The meat is succulent and tasty. Veg tacos. Theirs are mainly filled with a healthy load of red rice, cilantro, onions, and beans. It's strange. There are some ingredients that they prepare well and other aspects that just miss the mark. Then depending on who is manning the grill that's yet another aspect that isn't similar to the everyday. There's no telling how many times I'd driven by Tacos El Tio wanting to try it. Finally, after a long day of driving, I was able to stop in. Let me give them credit for this: in the post-COVID world, places that are open 24-hours are a rarity. I am not someone who consumes tacos at 3am, but I appreciate the grind. I'd ordered the chips and salsa to start the experience and the Al Pastor Taco Dinner as my main. The chips and salsa were just fine, crisp, middle of the pack chips, a red-sauce, and a spicy green I thought was a spicy guac for an embarrassingly long period of time before having a "d'oh!" moment. The tacos were alright. The tortillas were lovely, having been griddled just enough. I am also a traditionalist when it comes to toppings, and believe it is hard to go wrong with onion and cilantro. However, when it came to the pork, it did not work for me. While I appreciate the protein was not skimped on, it was at the same time very dry. As for the pineapple, this was presented as a steak-fry-style slice at the top rather than being integrated into the meat. As for the accompaniments, the rice and beans were totally fine. Next, when it comes to their prices, I felt these were reasonable considering both the market and what you get. Finally, the service was friendly, and the food came out fast. Given that this is a counter-service/full-service hybrid type place, at times it was necessary to come up to the counter or do the little hand-raise, though that is to be expected. Final verdict: When I was in university, there was sub shop open late. The campus lore is that the food became better after midnight. Did it really? No. However, when you're hungry at that hour, everything starts to taste better, and the same applies here. Everything was still plenty warm. The burrito was swimming in a sweet tomato broth. It was decent sized burrito but the broth just made it hard to eat. The meat was tender but the flavors were muted and was taken over by the sweetness of the broth. The rice and beans were okay. The steak taco was good as well as the al pastor taco. The restaurant inside has really nice Mexican decor and art, and it seems pretty spacious. The customer service was great too. It seems family-owned! The tacos are good. The al pastor tacos were flavorful and decently spicy. The trips were good, and could be crispier too. The only thing I was disappointed about was their lengua taco. It wasn't lengua. I think they gave beef brisket. My brother and I had the same meat for our lengua tacos and the texture and meat looked like the meat you get in pho. It still tasted good, but that's not what I ordered. Overall, I'd recommend it because I like supporting family-owned businesses, and their food is good. I went twice in two days as my hotel is 10 minutes walking distance. The first day, I went around 9 am and got a Al pastor burrito plate with rice and beans. Burrito was grilled, Al pastor was juicy and flavorful. Rice was tasty and the beans topped with gooey cheese were a good complement. I had excellent service day one.
