I would recommend ordering to I as the dining area is very small and in the winter months with heavy traffic, the chill can distract from enjoying the meal. I am picky about my Mexican food, and Taco el Norte never disappoints. Everything I've had from their menu (from tacos to tamales to enchiladas) is delicious, fresh and packed with flavor. The service is always friendly and quick, even for takeout. I don't know what they put in their refried beans, but OH. MY. GAWD. they are good. I've tried other Mexcan places in the area, and none compare to Tacos el Norte. They just can't be beat, IMO. read more

The food here is just about as good as it gets in McHenry, and the manager is a very friendly cool guy. Haven't had a bad meal here yet. They could do a little work on the inside, maybe spruce things up a bit, I think it would help them out a lot to have a nicer dining area. Unbelievably expensive for "tacos" they show u one price in the Internet n they have another when u go to pick up ur food i paid $41 something for 7 tacos and 2 tortas they even charge for cheese if u go anywhere else it comes with that they charge extra here n there??? Very good. Mexican that is affordable, with a wide range of options. I usually get the Burrito Suizo Especial with steak and something else on the side. You don't really need anything on the side at all, as this burrito is HUGE but alas, I can't stay away. Yesterday, I tried a tamale and holy jesus-it was amazing. I wish I had gotten three of those for dinner with a side of rice and beans. Definitely next time I come back, I will forgo the burrito and hit up the tamales, as they were some of the best that I've had. My boyfriend ordered chorizo and they cooked it up fresh for him right in front of us. This place is nice in that you can see exactly what they are cooking for you. We always order to go and it is always finished in less than fifteen minutes. Everyone that works here is friendly and courteous, which is nice as well. I enjoy eating here a lot and will hope to continue to be brought here for some good, to-go mexican. read more

While the food is delicious, the lady that works the cash register (usually in the evenings) is SO RUDE!!!! She has gotten progressively worse over the years. I used to work across the street as a kid and would be a regular in Tacos El Norte. I would always get the steak nachos, which are loaded with skirt steak, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, beans, lettuce, tomato, and probably a few more goodies that I'm forgetting. It would cost me $5 and change for them and it was more than enough to eat! I then got a job near the city and didn't visit that side of town often. I went back recently to find they jacked up their prices at least $2 a plate, which is a bit disappointing, but not a deal breaker (it's a business, you gotta do what you gotta do, right?). I've heard great things about their chile relleno burrito, so I decided to grab one. I was disappointed to see that they put chopped up tomatoes and iceberg lettuce in it... I hate getting iceberg lettuce in burritos because the heat and moisture makes it slimy and unappealing. I know that's the Americanized way of making Mexican food in the states, but if that's what I wanted, I'd go to Taco Bell. My suggestion is making two options, one being the "Americanized" version with the lettuce and tomato, and the other being the "Authentic" version with cilantro and lime and onions and beans and cheese... YUM! I understand I can substitute and what-not, but I thought I'd throw that idea out there. Besides that, I do highly enjoy getting food from here. The staff is always friendly, they work hard, and the food isn't half-bad. read more

I will never return to this restaurant! My wife and I decided to grab a quick dinner tonight and had a horrible experience. We were greeted by a nice young server and I showed her that we had a Coupon Clipper application on my phone prior to ordering. Their restaurant was on there for Buy one Entrée get one 50% off. She said "I've never seen that before but it should be fine." I showed her that it had a redeem button (I have used the AP at several restaurants without an issue). They are choosing to advertise on it so why should there be a problem? We were waiting quite a while for our food when the server came back to tell us that she made a mistake and forgot to put our order in...we were still okay and told her it was not a problem. Our food arrived and was below average and very salty. We ordered the enchiladas and chimichangas. By this time a new server was taking care of us. When it came time to get the check I showed her the coupon ap and she pointed to the cash register telling me to show the person working there. She started shaking her head "no" at me. I walked up calmly and showed her the coupon. She told me they would not accept it and they had called the manager to ask about it. I told her that didn't make sense since the restaurant was clearly on the application. She acted annoyed and said she needed a paper coupon. I told her we would not be returning anymore which is when she proceeded to mumble in Spanish some form of "chinga." I told her I knew that she just swore at me and that was very rude. She nodded her head and handed me my check. This is not the way people should be treated. read more
