You're probably asking, how do I know that and what does this place make itself stand out? Where does Tacos Apson spend their money on? Yes, the food. They don't get a crap about the decor of the place or how it makes you feel as long as the food is good and you're blown away by the flavors, you're in good company. What did I get? I got tacos along with a torta. I would suggest you to go with the more exotic meats and that you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised by how much flavor there is. And also, you have to try something new when you get the chance or else what's the point of living? All in all, don't expect nice decor or anything. But, do realize that you might have to fight to get someone's attention and to know what you want to eat when you get there so you don't back the line up. My experience was great, the service wasn't there (because it's pretty much pick up your food and eat and leave) and the food was what I looked for when I was in Tucson. Went in and ordered an AL Pastor taco and a Carna Asada Burrito. The al pastor taco tasted more like a carnitas taco, it didn't have that al pastor taste it was OK just not what it should have been. The Carne Asada burrito was absolutely gross. They used greasy meat that had a lot of fat chunks. I had to spit out some of them as it was just bits of fat. The food is great BUT the woman at the front counter was extremely rude. I ordered a drink and burrito to go. The woman at the counter did not give me my drink when I ordered (she did so with everyone else.) When I picked up my food I asked for my drink. Delicious Mexican food with great service. I came for a quick bite on the way home and found this place nearby with high reviews. When I arrived, there was ample parking in the back with tables filled with people waiting for their food. You know it's legit when the whole menu is in Spanish and I have to Google things. The food was coming out pretty quick so I was hopeful that my lunch would be quick as well. With 4 people in line in front of me, it took less than 10 minutes for my food to come out. The woman taking and calling out orders is also really kind. I ordered one carne asada taco and one small caramelon. The taco was stripped down with just meat and tortilla - no onions or cilantro. The caramelon was warm greasy goodness. I asked for to-go and it came securely wrapped (no leaks, no extra grease) with a bunch of packaged salsas and toppings. We waited 40 minutes for our food to get home and see that they didn't even give us the al pastor that was suppose to be in it. We also got a half filled small container of cabbage that was enough for only 2 tacos. It was not worth the amount of money we spent and felt like a total rip off. We were excited about visiting this place while we were in Tucson. We were highly disappointed with the quality of the food and the lack of cleanliness of the place. We ordered tacos de tripa, cabeza, haas, Apson, carne asada and gringa. The meat in all of them was not fresh and tasted warmed over. The tripas were overcooked and tasted as if they weren't washed well. The carne asada was fatty, chewy and greasy. So disappointed. The prices were way high for the poor quality. After a trip to Sahuarita Holiday Artisans Market, we were heading home and decided it was too nice a day in December to waste it inside. First thought was Rollies, but it's closed on Sundays. Had this place bookmarked in my "Mexican" collection. It was nearby and had outdoor seating, so we decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint! I had Tacos Hass and they were a wonderful explosion of flavor. The verde sauce wasn't what I was expecting, but it was super yummy. The accompanying pico de gallo and fresh lime just added more flavor and texture. (There was also shredded cabbage, but I couldn't fit that on the taco, so I ditched it.) Ordered at on outdoor window, picked it up on a tray and ate on the patio with fast-food formica booths that were being sanitized between customers. Everyone was wearing masks & social distancing. This is where the locals are... and they know what's up! Tacos Apson is the most legit taco shop I've ever been to. My friend that grew up in Tucson recommended this as #1 tacos in AZ, and I'm soooo glad she did! It's off the beaten path but convenient between the airport & downtown, and there's lots of parking around. The inside is tiny (think: diner setup with 6 barstools & only a wall of barstools behind it), and there's also an outdoor walk-up window to order takeout. They even have a salsa bar with great options! Did I mention this place is super cheap too?! The food, y'all, is freaking amazing. They've got a couple guys working the grill, turning out some incredible beef, chicken, ribs, etc. I tried a couple different tacos and a side of refried beans. The short rib was my favorite because it was so well seasoned. They make their own tortillas, and I love that they give you a side of tortillas to go with your food too (great with the salsas)... it's all so damn fresh & authentic. Quick summary: THE TACOS ARE AWESOME. Come here for incredibly well-seasoned beef, a huge variety of delicious tacos, borderline dirt-cheap prices, friendly if sometimes slow service, a great fixins/salsa bar, lots of limes to squeeze into your food, and an ambience that says "we're here for great food, not to look good eating somewhere." Apson is an honest place that has damn good tacos - I especially liked the Taco Hass, Taco Apson, and their asada/bean/cheese tostada. You won't regret it! Now, to quickly address some of the negative reviews of this wonderful place. It has more of a stand/food truck feel, so anyone complaining that it is "dirty" is just seeing what real kitchens look like when there isn't a lot of "restaurant makeup," like a decorated dining room. It DOES get busy with lots of locals and Spanish-speakers - it is not some tourist trap - so you know the wait is worth it. Also, it is on the south side of Tucson with not much else around it in terms of activities or attractions, so don't come here if a beautiful location is paramount. This is a no frills spot for amazing tacos. Don't try and go through the front door, the inside is closed post-pandemic. Instead go around the side to the order and pickup window. Be sure to smile and let them know your name so they can call it out over the loudspeakers when you're order is ready. They accept credit and debit cards so no need to stop at an ATM before going. They have their menu items numbered but don't try and order using their numbers just go by name. Their corn tortillas are fresh and fluffy. Barbacoa is amazing but I love the Asada tacos cause you can really taste the smoke flavor of their grill. For the Asada I like to request queso/cheese on top. Be sure to listen out for your name, the speakers aren't very clear so you'll have to really listen good. There are shaded booths for you to eat on. I wouldn't get it to go unless you are going less than ten minutes away as the integrity of your tortilla will deteriorate rapidly. If you can, eat it there hot and fresh. Oh! And the washroom is actually very clean. The Caramelo cannot be missed. It's a small medium or large tortilla stuffed with steak and cheese. It's easily one of the best things on the menu. If you want a little change of pace, try out the Tacos Apson which comes with cheese. When they hand you the food, it will already come with a variety of salsas, pico and plenty of limes so no need to ask for those. There's a buffet cart where they used to put out all that stuff pre-COVID and maybe by the time you visit it will be back in operation. These guys put it all on the line to put out an amazing product, the smoke from the grills are so intense that the vents can't handle it and so they are literally working in smoky conditions to make sure you get that authentic open fire taste. It's important not to go in expecting a fancy, high dollar experience. It's a wonderful, hole in the wall place that just wants to feed you tacos. If you are high drama and want to police social distancing and mask wearing, go somewhere else, they are not about that so don't go there, get upset and leave a bad review You've been warned in advance. We have driven to Taco Apson twice in the last year and today was no different than the first visit. Well, we did try Taco Lengua and it was not it for me. Good flavoring and texture, but I would not eat one again. Our 2022 motto is to try new things and we did that with the Lengua. We came for the rib tacos and we had them with some other choices.
