I've been to other 1986 locations but went to this one today. Food was great as expected, but I wanted to say the staff was really great. The chef (i think) was really incredible. He was super nice, helpful, and friendly. My mom was looking for a knife to cut her burrito in half and since there wasn't one he offered to cut it for her in the kitchen (we had already gotten our food and sat down). We heard Tacos 1986 just opened in the Toluca Lake area so we decided to make a take-out dinner out of it. They were still in their soft-opening phase but I tell you what, they are ready to go. They have everything dialed-in. The place is spotless, all the employees have masks and gloves on. Tacos 1986 is located between Jinya Ramen and Fresh Brothers Pizza on Riverside Dr. I decided to try 3 of the 4 types of meats they offer. Actually, the other one is mushroom and I regret not trying that one. Next time for sure. Tacos are $3.25 each and I got a carne asada, adobada and chicken. The carne asada was good. It had good flavor. There were a few fatty pieces but I didnt mind it. All orders come with onions, cilantro, guacamole and salsa. That's what con todo means up on their menu so order accordingly if you have any modifications. The chicken was real good. I liked the marinade on it. Tasty, for sure. It was probably my favorite of the 3. The adobada I found to be too oily. It was hard to even grasp the taco towards the end of it as the oil just was too much. It had good flavor but I probably would like it better without guac so you can really taste the simmer on the meat. I also ordered a carne asada quesadilla ($4.25) This was certainly not the quesadilla I expected it. It simply was laid out just like the taco except it had a cheese layer in-between the tortilla and the ingredients. There was no top tortilla layer to sandwich everything in. That's what I was expecting. So pretty much, the added $1 is for the cheese. It was good but it wasnt what I expected. We also got a carne asada mulita ($4.50). It was just ok. We got an horchata ($2.75) and it was very good. Service was great. Employees were helpful and friendly. Safety pre-cautions due to Covid seem to be taken very seriously here. I really liked that. And again, the place was spotless. We'll be back. I need to try the mushroom taco and order a vampiro. Metered street parking out front. Uhm I'm not sure what happened to Tacos 1986. It used to be a p good joint and this is my first visit at the Burbank location but used to frequent at the downtown and smorgasbord stops and noticed a dramatic decline over months. I think my recent visit puts a nail in the coffin for me. Ordered pollo vampiro and adobado taco and both made me take a bite and go get food somewhere else. The vampiro was dry and badly set up where the cheese melted to one side which was annoying. The meats tasted good but tbh it resembled the chicken flavor from Chipotle. The adobado also tasted alright but why shouldn't it? You've made hundreds of this and you probably can do this in your sleep. But the tortilla was too present and filling. Anyway, food was barely okay. But with the price of that taco- it's a joke. There's plenty of good taco places with better flavors and better prices. read more

We preferred the adobada, the asada was overdone and too crunchy for our liking. But the guac and toppings were great, and we love their salsa verde. Went in for a late lunch. Had a bad experience with a young man who called himself Romeo. Rude from the start as he talked on the phone. It sounded personal. I placed my order and left but the employee Romeo seemed to think it was fun to joke in Spanish by saying Good Morning. My only gripe with this location is the parking. It can be difficult, but if you don't mind looking around it's worth it. This is one of the smaller locations, but they have amazing service. Tacos are straightforward circles of deliciousness so when I went into Tacos 1986, such were my expectations. I've also seen them featured in taco lists before so I was excited to try them. We didn't have a hard time finding parking right out front and walking in you see a giant menu and the ordering counter. They have a limited menu but do include vegetarian options. Pricing is higher than other taco spots. They have salsas and taco accompaniments (limes, radishes, etc.) on the side for you to grab on your own. Cashier was friendly and you can see them prepare your meal. We didn't wait long for our order. I ordered 2 asada tacos and 1 chicken taco to try it. My partner also ordered 3 tacos. They serve it on a plate and wrap it in foil. Tacos are slightly bigger than the usual tiny ones and I guess all tacos come with avocado. It comes with the usual cilantro and onion mix too but I couldn't taste it or really see it on my tacos. The chicken was good, I enjoyed it. Asada didn't taste like asada, I think it's the way they season it. It almost tasted too lime-y to me. Idk if that was also maybe from the "guacamole" they slathered on. I finished my tacos but I didn't feel like I had tacos yknow? Like I was still left with the craving of tacos. My partner said he was hardly full. The salsas they had were really good. The green one isn't spicy at all but the red and orange one have a little spicyness to it. We saved the leftovers and had them with our eggs the next morning and it was yum. My main annoyance though was the way the tacos were wrapped. They half wrap each taco individually like a crepe in really thin paper. So when they wrap it all in foil, the steam kind of sticks the wrapping paper to the taco. Taking it off is just ripping it off piece by piece. I don't understand why they wrap them individually, seems like a waste. Overall, service was nice, place was clean, there was a small bar like table outside for seating, salsas were good, pricier than usual, but I don't think I would come back or recommend to my friends. read more

My fellow Angelenos: I understand the criticism, I just don't agree with it. Tacos 1986 is definitely not your typical Los Angeles taco joint: (if there is a "typical LA taco", but our taqueria influences tend to be more D.F., Michoacán, Sonora, Jalisco, etc). This is, however, a pretty authentic Tijuana taco, and is similar to what you would find in San Diego at places like Tacos El Gordo, The Taco Stand, etc. I am a born and raised Angeleno, but did live in San Diego for a few years and really grew to appreciate the TJ Taco scene down there.
