I ended up paying $22 for one scrambled egg and 1/2 a piece of toast. The server was fantastic and showed concern; the manager did not care about ripping me off and should be ashamed of the replacement meal and what she charged. It's your standard Eggs Benny sandwiched between two thick slices of homemade bread (your choice of white, whole wheat or multigrain - no less!) and a bowl of some of the tastiest Hollandaise I've found in the past few months. All tucked away in an unassuming, down-home diner in Port Williams - a quick drive from downtown Wolfville! More people need to know about this! Four tables covered in business cards of diners-gone-by are set up in a space about the size of a loading elevator surrounded by antiques and collectibles of all kinds including a very important sign: 'Patience required as good food takes time to prepare.' Why so important? Well, there's only one person cooking back there. ONE. If she doesn't make it, you're not eating it. It makes for consistently hearty and satisfying meals, but it does increase your wait time. Portions are HUGE (actually, the burgers border on obscene...), everything is made fresh on site, and the prices are more than affordable considering what you get! And on that note, hit up an ATM at the corner store next door since it's all cash only!

Even when it was only half full we overhead the waitress welcoming new customers with "We will get to you as soon as we can". The waits weren't long, and the food was great! I rediscovered the origins of hash browns in their culturally authentic Acadian grated potato pancakes - the size of a Frisbee. Crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Lots of potato flavour! The middle sized breakfast was huge - eggs, bacon, home fries and great homemade bread. Annnd - one can substitute the potato pancakes for home fries!!!! Unfortunately it can't get a 5 star because they were seen reusing the homemade jam from the individual servings - scrape the top, smooth it out and add more to the top. As much as I encourage good economics of not throwing out tons of jam - this isn't a great practise:-( So, I leave it to your judgement - food great, space small, cash only and great prices. I hope they survive and thrive in Port Williams.

The Wild Caraway is a 4.5 hour drive from where we live now, but when we decided to take a day off this summer and do something fun, that was our obvious road trip destination. On a good weather day the drive between Glenholme and Advocate Harbour is beautiful, and a walk on the beach near Advocate or a hike at Cape Chignecto works up a decent appetite. We landed at the Wild Caraway around 3, in time to catch the lunch menu but a little early for dinner. The restaurant resides in an old farmhouse, refinished taking the history of the placed into account, but painted beautifully funky colours and decorated with creatively placed vintage items - calendars from the 1940s, a frozen meat saw box, likely from the 50's, and vintage beer mugs from a world of interesting events and places. Original artwork hangs around the dining areas and there ar teo rooms for rent upstairs in case the menu of delicious Nova Scotia brews gets the best of you. The Wild Caraway's menu is a little on the short side, but it revolves completely around locally produced meats and in-season vegetables, and as farmers we believe that's something a lot more restaurants should be taking into consideration. The dinner menu actually changes week to week. Troy chose the pasta of the day, fusilli with halibut and fresh veggies tossed with garlic and olive oil. I had the meatloaf burger with fries. When the plates arrived neither portion looked overwhelmingly huge, but the fact that Troy finished without room for dessert, and I left a few fries on my plate is a true indication of how filling it really was. The meal started with fresh baked biscuits, peppered with dulse. Simply delicious. I am not a fan of meatloaf, so I'd hummed and hawed befor ordering, but the burger was absolutely amazing. The grilled pork meatloaf patty was lightly spiced and wrapped in a slice of Oulton's bacon, The toppings were simple - a smoked mayonnaise with lettuce and tomato, but the flavour...oh my! Even when I got to the point where I didn't think another bite was possible I just couldn't let that burger go. It pained me to have to leave a few fries behind, because they were perfectly crispy and as ungreasy as any fry has ever been, but I just wasn't willing to send a bite of that burger back. Troy's pasta looked simple enough, but the garlicky drssing announced its presence long before it hit the table. We are both huge fans. The pasta was delicious, the veggies were beautifully done, and the halibut was cooked perfectly. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the real masterpieces. The Wild Caraway has perfected that perfect balance of fine dining and casual comfort. You can go there in jeans and a t-shirt, you can dress up a little for a special date. The food is consistent and as good as anything I've eaten in this province. The commitment to using Nova Scotian ingredients makes the menu incredible and creative, and the staff know how to make you feel at home from the second you walk through the door. Advocate Harbour is a beautiful feast for the eyes. Top it off with a visit to the Wild Caraway and you'll have a road trip second to none no matter where you're from.

There are six picnic tables facing the bay in on a sunny day it's a better option than being inside anyway. We got a blueberry gin special, the fish and chips, a lobster roll, the chicken burger and their pasta stripped of the extras. The fish was great. Flaky and light and flavorful. Lobster roll was outstanding. And the side salads were perfect size garnished with a couple kernels of popcorn.

We have been excited to try this spot since it opened in the fall but it was always super busy but the wait was well worth it. This is a take out so if it's off-season, expect to sit in your car to wait for your food or pre-order ahead of time if you want it ready when you show up. You get a little buzzer to take to your car if you do choose to wait, so it's a great system. In the summer, there is a lot of outdoor seating at picnic benches. The chicken shawarma was massive and delicious! Fresh ingredients and fluffy pita bread. Good bang for your buck. The 'hot' fish was also really good but not actually spicy. The only things I'd suggest the owner to change is to make the sauce less runny to avoid making the fish batter soggy and to switch from shredded to leaf lettuce - it would make less of a mess. We got fries to share but we could have done without. They're nice and crispy and not overly salty. Quite a few fun 'maritime' options on the menu that we will be back to try like lobster sandwich and lobster poutine. It's nice to finally see someone investing in the area with good food. The area really doesn't need another deep fried, overly battered greasy fish and chips place so this is very welcomed. Super accessible right on the highway. Lots of parking. I got three slim Julien slices of carrot. Nothing to really complain about, also nothing to write home about either. Getting to the sandwich, I had one bite and immediately spit it into a napkin. I opened it and it was filled with green peppers. The waitress came by and I asked why the green peppers, the menu states "sweet bell peppers". I asked for red or green peppers and she took it away to fix the sandwich. They didn't give me a new sandwich, they picked off the green peppers and replaced them with red peppers. It was not great as it was no longer hot, but edible. I had some difficulty eating as I couldn't get the image of someone's fingers picking out the green peppers. Here is the kicker, while I was waiting for the disassembly and reassembly of my sandwich the manager came by with a menu. She pointed out the sandwich comes with bell peppers and green peppers are bell peppers. Although that is on it's face true. The menu states "sweet bell peppers ". This clearly refers to ripe bell peppers as red, orange and yellow that are ripe and sweet. Contrasting this is the green bell peppers as that is bitter or sharp it it's flavour and liked by those that prefer this bitterness. I can't remember when I had a burger as delicious as this was. Sure it was greasy but it wasn't Ricky greasy... it was more like Julian greasy lol. They grind the beef daily so it's fresh. I had the onion burger which came with onion rings on it. My only regret is getting plain fries instead of poutine. The fries were just ok. Better than frozen fries but I've had better. After getting their double sided one page menu I had to ask about breakfast things. They don't do breakfast. I was given the seat in front of the kitchen door. It wasn't too bad since there was only one waitress, she only screamed the once at someone in the next room while standing beside me. After looking over the menu I settled on the fish & chips. I waited longer than it was reasonable for the 3 tables with patrons. When it finally came it was stacked like a child might try building a tower. While deconstructing the tower I mover the Tatar sauce off the plate and the waitress tried to take them back. The fish was great and the Tatar sauce was exceptional. However the fries were either overcooked or they had a dirty frier. I never touched them.
