Does Zocalo mean Joke in Spanish? It must as I was not impressed with this place at all. I did like that you could order different tacos in the combo. There was an 85 cent uncharge for shrimp and shrimp tacos are one of my favorites (al pastor being another in my top 100). It looked delicious but as I was eating, I realized there were only TWO shrimp in it... and they weren't big either. The Chorizo may have been the blandest (most bland) chorizo I ever had. It had zero redness and tasted like ground beef dusted chorizo spice (I think the Spice Girls kicked her out early, BTW). The chicken taco was decent and what you'd expect. Pretty Tasty I had the 2 taco lunch special with chips & salsa. I selected ground beef and fish. The flavor of the tacos was delish. I was confused with ordering online because you select 4 tortilla options. I selected corn and flour tortillas. How would they know which tortilla is for which taco? Not sure if I misunderstood the instructions. My ground beef taco had a corn tortilla and my fish taco had a flour tortilla. I wanted the opposite but it tasted delicious nonetheless. The combination of the cabbage makes it crunchy and the crema is creamy. I enjoyed the salsa. The pineapple salsa was sweeter than I enjoy. The XX hot and green salsas were my favorite. I actually ate those with the chips. Im glad the server suggested the Xtra spicy salsa. It wasnt spicy at all. All the tomato based salsas have a little sweetness. I arrived at the restaurant around 12 PM on a Tuesday. The tables were mostly full, but the patio was empty and the turnover at tables seemed fast. I waited in line to place my order and it took a bit for one family to order but after a few minutes I was in front. Their menu didn't explicitly seem to have the birria tacos listed but I had seen that they were available every Tuesday on their website and they had an article printed about the birria tacos so I asked. The cashier let me know they serve birria tacos everyday! So I placed my order for two tacos and a tres leches. I grabbed water and sat down, expecting that they'd call out my name, but they actually serve your meals directly to you which was very nice! Someone also came around to bring the hot sauce rack to my table which was very nice, as I was interested in trying these. Everything was delicious. I loved the birria tacos, and the spicy hot sauce added a nice touch without being overwhelmingly spicy. The tres leches cake was brought to me at the end of my meal, and it was sweet and moist! The best place to get tacos in the area, in my opinion. They are always so fresh and can never go wrong with any taco. All of them are yummy. The toppings are perfect. The taco size is very good. In always prefer the corn taco over the flour ones. There is a nice bite to it. My favorite are fish and chicken tinga. This time I also tried the tres leches. I was so pleasantly surprised. This visit was a miss. Usually really enjoy the tacos. This time we ordered enchiladas and the Barbacoa meat was so salty, It was barely edible. Strangely, the guacamole on the side was just as salty. We have been there are multiple times and I've had the Barbacoa in tacos and it was never that salty. did comment to the staff they need to adjust the seasoning it really ruined the meal. We came here on a Saturday lunch time with some friends. There was a self ordering option which was what we opted for. The ambiance was clean & casual! There was a good amount of seating inside, but each table accommodated around 4 people? We ordered tacos(Tinga, grilled chicken, bbq brisket, steak, grilled fish), rice &beans, chips&guac, elote corn & churros between me and my husband. FOOD tacos: The fillings of the tacos were basically the same--greens, guac, cheese, pico, crema? Out of the tacos we liked the bbq brisket the most! It was the most flavorful of the proteins. We liked the tinga the least--it tasted dark meat chickeny if you know what I mean... our friend also did not love her chicken tinga. All of the tacos ended up tasting kind of similar since all the toppings were the same. 3.5/5 Chips & guac- chips were solid. Not too thin and had a nice crunch with not too much or too little salt. The guac was fantastic! It was sooo creamy and velvety almost ganache like? But also had a good bite from the tomato and onions. I loved that it was Not too acidic (don't like sour guac). I might like this more than chipotles guac? 5/5 Rice & beans- both seasoned well! Flavorful. Not mushy 4/5 Elote- Delicious, tastes like elote. It wasn't drenched in mayo, which I liked. 4/5 Churros- these were underwhelming for me. I liked the actual churros, but not the filling inside. I think it was supposed to be dulce? I gave Taco Zocalo four stars, mostly for the cleanliness of the restaurant, the ease of ordering, and the service with a smile from all the staff members. They all did a great job last night. As for the tacos, I think they were good, maybe not great. I thought this place might be great because the chips and salsa we ordered were good- the salsa actually had a little spice to it, a little bit of heat, which is more than you find in many places nowadays. Between my wife and me we ordered four different kinds: Chicken tinga, grilled chicken, steak, and ground beef. I think the ground beef was probably the best because it had some seasoning and the flour tortilla was good. We ordered the other three on corn tortillas and those tortillas were really good, they were firm enough not to get soggy and leak, but still flexible enough to truly wrap around the good stuff inside. For me, the biggest problem with the tacos was they lacked flavor. I felt like I was back at the old Tortilla Factory restaurant that used to be in Herndon, which I always referred to as "Mexican for seniors" because there was no salt, pepper, or spice in that food, and that's how I found this place. I honestly could not tell the difference between the chicken tinga and the grilled chicken, and if the texture of the steak wasn't different than chicken, I wouldn't have been able to tell that apart either. I don't think I have ever wanted to salt a taco before, but last night I wanted to salt three of them. Nothing on the taco gave it a different taste, I would have killed for a green pepper I think. Listen, I don't like my food to burn my lips and throat, but I do like some kind of flavor, be it salt, garlic, or heat...just...something. The tacos were not small as you see in many of these places, so we were filled up on two tacos each, which is good. The prices are as reasonable as you can get these days without going to Taco Bell instead. Wanted to grab a quick bite. We found this local gem while running errands. Tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas and salads. I had a shrimp and chicken ting taco (shrimp taco was devoured before I snapped a picture:) The tacos were packed full of flavor and I topped mine with a pineapple sauce, which was so yummy! I got the elotes side ($4.50) which they brought as an appetizer. Very yummy. For my main dish, I ordered the 3 tacos mix n' match ($10.89). I got one chorizo (not as tasty as I had imagined but good), one bbq brisket (very delicious), and 1 ground beef (solid - really just checking this out for my son). I had all the toppings except guacamole. As you can see in the photo, they "double" the corn tacos. You can also get flour tacos and they have several other protein choices that I'll sample next time. My friend had elotes as well, 2 tacos (grilled chicken and fish - which is grilled not fried - and rice. She enjoyed her meal as well. Deliciousness - 4.5/5 Happiness - 4/5 I'm usually not impressed by high-end fast-casual taco joints like this (particularly after living in AZ and getting to go into low-end fast-casual authentic joints that would blow these kinds of places out of the water). But Zocalo delivers the goods! I got three tacos - Chicken Tinga, Beef barbacoa and fish. They do NOT skimp on the meat, you'll be sure to get protein with every bite. They also load it with toppings, so you'll never get a bite of just taco shell. That said, these were some of the freshest and most delicious corn tortillas I've had in ages. They remained sturdy and had a pleasing crunch to them. I also really enjoyed the hot sauces. The sauce wasn't runny, it was chunky and fresh. Each of the three (regular, extra hot, and verde) had distinct tastes, which I appreciated. And none of the hot sauces overwhelmed the tacos themselves. My wife got a chicken chimichanga. It was a bit too cheesy, but otherwise pretty good. And you definitely get a bang for your buck, as the chimichanga and assorted sides lasted two meals for her. Finally, I've got to mention the guacamole. It was so good, I got a separate order to go. I liked the decorations for the space, including an enormous mixer on display. The staff was very slow and also had to be asked multiple times for things (like to go box, napkins, hot sauces). The drink machines were also out of order, so I was left pretty thirsty. I took my family who were visiting from El Salvador to eat here, we ordered tacos and two beers, and were asked for passports just because we were "not locals" even though my sister showed an ID with her age. We were told that non locals need more than an ID and we had to show passports according the "law." When I asked to provide the law number the server couldn't provided this info. What happened was a result of poor ownership, leadership and management. Here's the kicker, this never happened when my husband and I went there. We enjoyed going to this restaurant but no more. Wow! I'm blown away! Amazing flavors explode in your mouth with every bite here!!! This is certainly not your average taco place. The tacos are irresistibly delicious. They are made with fresh ingredients, clean, and simply delectable. The place is impeccably clean and they have outdoor seating. The staff is friendly and I learnt that this place is owned by a gourmet chef! This explains the unique blend of flavors I have not experienced with a taco before. We tried the elote- corn on the cob, cooked well but still moist, covered in spices and grated queso. It was wonderful. I had three tacos: beef barbacoa, chicken tinga and chicken bbw. Ok. I'll say 5 stars. But I've only been once. But that one trip I had their chimichanga and a couple tacos. I had enough to know that this place is legit. Their chimichanga meal is a perfect plate and serving. I got the beef and the wife got the chicken. I got the chicken on the tacos tho and I can tell you that their chicken tinga is special. I would get that meat again in a heartbeat for their tacos. I know their menu is limited. This was our first time at this particular location, and I actually liked it much better than the other ones (Chantilly and Reston). The customer service was great, and I loved how the place didn't reek with smell like the other two locations. This location is newer---with both indoor and outdoor seating. The tacos are fantastic---but what draws me into Taco Zocalo is their hot sauces, especially their pineapple habanero hot sauce! Oh my goodness, it's soooo good! Not only it has the right amount of kick, but you can really taste the pineapple, mango...the fresh tropical fruits that just blends so well altogether. Their grilled chicken, bbq brisket (a little on the sweeter side), fish, chicken tinga, and steak tacos are really one of the best in the Northern Virginia area. If a girl who lives all the way in Alexandria drives a great amount of distance to get some tacos, you should know that it must be legit! Side Note: 1. Don't judge by the looks--the tacos may look small but they are surely packed with a good amount of protein and will get you full. You do have the option of getting either flour or corn tortillas--I always opt for flour whereas my husband always gets the corn (shows that they are both really good, lol). 2. Guac is a part of the topping without any additional charge. You should ask to hold the guac if that's not your preference---but I think their guac makes the taco extra tasty! 3. Taco Zocalo has great food, excellent portion sizes and awesome staff. I particularly love their salsa, which you can tell is custom made, as it's slightly different but equally delicious every week. They have a TON of options for proteins and every flavor of Jarritos you could possibly want. They have indoor and outdoor seating at their Ashburn location, which is nicely shaded for hot summer days. The staff is super friendly; I go once a week and we're on a first-name basis at this point! They also have another location in Reston, though I haven't been there. Taco zocalo is definitely my favorite taco spot in Loudoun County. Anybody that I have introduced to this place has also had great things to say. On Tuesdays and Sundays, they have their birria taco special. These are so good I always order them if it happens to be one of those days. The consume that is paired with these is really flavorful. Their other tacos are really tasty as well. My next favorite is the brisket taco. The brisket is a bit sweet and works well with their hot sauce. There's something about their tacos that no matter if its piping hot or room temperature, it is still good. The in house hot sauce is superb. I come from a part of the country where it's readily accessible and often incredibly good so I'll admit I wasn't sure what to expect when k walked into this place to try their food. Artisan tacos go to senior Ramones, el Salvador Go to Cerrito's Pupuseria but you want good fast tacos everyday come here. The lamb was real good and I really liked the corn tortillas.
