I grew up in the area and used to love riding my BMX bike to TACO REAL with friends growing up. They had the best burritos. The ingredients were always fresh, the steak they used was so lean and tender. Last night........ I threw away all of my family's order. Compete waste of $35! We were in the area visiting and I had talked up TACO REAL so much everyone was excited. But when it was delivered it was so disgusting my sister actually got physically ill. Never again! By the time we got our order delivered the restuarant was closed and I couldn't call in to complain. The steak in my burrito was so fatty, chewy, and tuff I was gagging to swallow it. I am horribly embarrassed and angry. I naturally love the idea of supporting local mom & pop shop restaurants. In theory I want to believe they have the best authentic food......... BUT...... BUT....... Horrible fact is their quality of food is absolutely disgusting! Last night I wouldn't even give my dog that food to eat in fear she would get sick. This is absolutely a true hole into the wall place that has one of my favorite cravings of life...pupusas. They offer a variety and l've tried them all. The green jalapeño sauce is my favorite...can do endless shots with those. ;-). And they're all very good. It's hard to find Salvadoran food in the burbs and having variety is an important contribution to the diversity of cultures we're fortunate to have. I am puzzled by some of the negative reviews for this place. These people were probably expecting Taco Bell-like food. Very unfortunate bunch of souls that were very likely raised to appreciate processed frozen food and led to believe Taco Bell and it's equally toxic cousin in crime Taco John, are Mexican food. I have never dined inside or even seen the place in person but would absolutely not recommend ordering via delivery. I ordered for the first time about two weeks ago as I recently started working in Addison and saw that they were relatively close. I ordered a few tacos, nachos and a horchata. I asked them what the delivery minimum was over the phone to which they quickly responded with $20 when the grub hub app stated that it was $10. When I notified the guy who was taking my order, he quickly retracted his statement and pretended he was mistaken. They did not have ice there at the time so unbeknownst to me, my horchata would actually be warm when it arrived. My food came rather quickly but I was absolutely shocked when I looked at the total. They charged around $4 more than what I expected. When I called back and complained, they tacked on all these miscellaneous costs that they never explained before. I literally had cheese, light cilantro and light lettuce on my tacos and they somehow justified the extra costs, only refunding me $1 which I added to my tip to the delivery guy because it wasn't worth it. Yesterday, I decided to give them a second try and figured it may have been a fluke the first time around. Again, the delivery fee is $4.75. I ordered 3 steak tacos priced at $8.99 on grub hub and there was no mention of the $10 minimum but I would not have even had an issue with it. So far we're at $13.74, right? Not including taxes and cheese which was supposed to be around 30 cents per taco. MY TOTAL ENDED UP BEING $17.20 and they gave me corn tortillas instead of flour despite me being adamant about it and the guy even repeating my order back to me. $17.20 FOR AN $8.99 TACO DINNER AN LD THEY STILL GOT MY ORDER WRONG. Now livid, when I called to confront the place, the guy second guessed whether or not I had actually received corn tortillas as if I was making it up and began backtracking after I offered to send a photo. Very disappointing! I will never spend my money there again. I believe that they are either grossly unqualified to deal with people's money or purposely scamming people by failing to mention extra charges for every sprinkle of a topping (which by the way still didn't account for my full total, either time). read more

My experience at this restaurant was by far the worst I've had in my 64 years of life. I walked into this restaurant and saw someone headed behind a wall that separated the the cooking area from the registrar. This occurs as the bells attached to door jingle loudly, so it should have been obvious that there was a customer at the door. I waited nearly 4-5 minutes at the counter before I saw and sounded an additional bell indicating that a customer is waiting. I also let me presence be known by asking was there anyone there several times. Only after the counter phone rang with the caller hanging up after 5 rings or so did someone come from behind the wall with a very negative look on her face asking me what do you need, not how can I help you. I told her I'd been waiting nearly 10 minutes and again she asks 'what do you want' with a scowl on her face. At that point I just said its fine I'll go else where to which her response was 'ok'. I've had nothing but very positive restaurant experiences since I moved to Carol Stream 3 years ago. Really unfortunate I must say since there was no obvious reason for this VERY TERRIBLE customer service. read more

I was excited to see that a near by place had pupusas. I decided to give them a try. I ordered pork and cheese and bean and cheese pupusas. The misses got a taco dinner. After opening our food containers we quickly realized what we were in for. The entire dining room smelled like dead rat. This place is hot garbage. The meat in the tacos smelled rotten. It had such a pungent smell that I had to run it outside to the trash within 5 minutes. The so called pupusas they serve make a mockery of a traditional very tasty dish. Unless you want to be really disappointed, really ill and pissed off come give them a shot. read more

I came here and ordered: 1. Chicken burrito 2. Chorizo tacos 3. tripe taco 4. bean/cheese pupusa The chicken burrito was good. The last one I had was from Taco Burrito King and it was not good. The chicken was nice and lean and solid, and feel apart/shredded when chewed on. Mmm, good texture. I like when my ingredients nicely neighbor one another, not get mushed into a uniform mash. I love chorizo tacos. Cilantro, mm mm. These were really good. Plenty of meat that was brown on the outside and plump on the inside. My mouth is watering thinking about it. Never had tripe taco, and was impressed. I like the tripe you get at dim sum, but this was different. Seared so the edges are crunchy. It was really, really good, and didn't have that unwashed turd tube taste some tripe soups can have. I've never heard or pupusas before, and this was basically a fried pocket stuffed with beans and cheese. Good, but I prefer something with more of a kick. read more

My boyfriend saw this place while driving down North Ave the other day and suggested we try it the other night. He had a craving for pupusas and he wanted me to try them since I've never had one before. The strip mall that Taco Real is located in isn't the greatest as there are a few vacant stores and it just looks rundown overall, Taco Real is between a Pawn Shop and a subway. Taco Real however was very clean inside. We visited around 8 pm and the place was empty. I ordered a few carne asada tacos (mexican style services with Cilantro and onion) and my boyfriend ordered a variety of pupusas (chorizo and cheese & pork/cheese/beans). We also got a side of rice. We had to wait a few minutes for our food and the guy who took our order brought us complimentary chips and salsa to munch on while we waited. They had a TV on in the dining area and it was BLASTING a soccer game in Spanish. It was tolerable for the few minutes that we waited but if we dined in it would have given me a headache. I would hope if there were patrons dining that they would have turned the volume down a bit. Since I've never had pupusas before I wasn't sure what to expect. I tried the chorizo and cheese and overall it was tasty. A bit greasy for my liking though. The pork ones didn't seem as greasy...maybe the chorizo had something to do with it? The tacos were delish though. They were tiny but 2 filled me up. The steak was seasoned nicely. The gave us tons of sauces (hot and mild) and all the fixing to eat with the pupusas. read more

Tried the carne asada el carbon taco. Well at least thats what I ordered. What I got was a flavorless, extremely tough taco that gave no indications it was charcoal broiled. I think they were pulling a fast one on me. Taco el pastor was dry and very bitter tasting with no pineapple flavor what so ever. WORST EL PASTOR TACO I've ever had. Had a chicken torta. Probably one of the best I've ever had. Chicken was marinated and grilled. Very flavorful. I would recommend for the chicken but avoid the steak and pork. If they want people to try their papusas maybe they should give out samples. Not the kind of place to be adventurous if you get ny drift. read more

My husband and I are new to area and absolutely had to find a good, close Mexican restaurant as we moved from Naperville had to heartbreakingly move away from Los burritos tapatios. We came here thinking I'd be one of those good, hole in the wall kinda places. The chips and salsa were good, as were the rice and beans. I was a bit disappointed in the tacos and my husband said the burritos were also subpar. Neither of us have ever had such greasy tacos and burritos. I could actually feel my arteries clogging. We used to go there all of the time, mostly because we were new in town and didnt know of any other. Salsa is delicious- but there is no mild offered. In fact all of their sauces are good but HOT!!!!!!!! Horchatas are great and the food is good. ( though frequently over cooked) HOWEVER, lately it has been very expensive to get carry out there. Absolutely terrible. New owners? I ate here numerous times before and never had an issue. Where do I begin? 1. Service - felt like I was an inconvenience. Sorry, guess I'll need to learn to order in Spanish so i don't. 2. Food - ordered Steak tacos and a Steak burrito along with chips and salsa. Bill was $18+. 2 meals, right? Got the food home and came to find we got 1 hot and 1 mild sauce. 1 knife and 1 napkin in tbe bag. How about a fork and another napkin.? How about asking if i wanted/needed more than 1 of each sauce? Chips & salsa...not nearly enough chips for what I was charged. The tacos and burrito...meat was HORRIBLE....fat, grissle...NASTY!. A piece or 2 I can accept however I have a pile - where can I post a pic? In summary I will NEVER go back. Would not recommend to anyone. Can only hope the Health Dept shuts you down and you go away. I used to work nearby Taco Real and it was one of my favorite lunch spots. Now the Mexican offerings are pretty average....run of the mill burritos, tortas, tacos, etc. The salsa is very runny...last time I was there it just ran off the chips. Could this be Salvadoran style salsa? If so they should offer a slightly thicker salsa; the watery stuff isn't suitable for tacos or chips. What makes Taco Real special is the papusas. Now I've never had a papusa anywhere else so I can't say whether or not Taco Real makes particularly standout papusas. What I do know is that I love them and this is the only place in the western burbs that has them. Anyone who appreciates good regional Latin American cuisine should make the trek to Carol Stream and try one of these corny disks of deliciousness. read more

Place was pretty good. I had been there before when it was under old management and it was OK. This was better I got in there pretty late (9:45 and they close at 10). Only person in the place. Woman at the counter did not speak a word of English but was very friendly once she figured out what the heck I was saying. Cook was cool and helpful with menu. Ended up just getting taco dinner but with medium horchata it was $10!!! Kinda pricey for Mexican take out (although they might be going for El Salvadorian fare...there were a few choices on the menu for this). Had one chicken one pastor and one beef. Nothing out of this world but still good. Hot sauces were not like what I have had in this area but they were excellent. Not too much heat. Red had almost a fruity flavor to it. I will try again. The place had very pleasant staff. Ordered two enchilada meals. One chicken and one ground beef. When I got home, the chicken enchiladas were placed in a way that all the chicken fell out and the tortillas were not soft enough to cut. The ground beef was actually steak and was quite chewy. Ordered tacos for lunch. The meat was very bland, it was as though they did not season it at all. I am American but the tacos I make at home are more flavorful. Also their delivery fee is ridiculously too high, then on top of that you have to give the driver a tip. Extremely disappointing experience. Placed an order online with no substitutions to any meal. Delivery was late, when I called (twice) to check the status of the order no one answered the phone. Unfortunate for those of us who only get 30 minutes for lunch break. Food order was wrong when delivery finally arrived - correct amount of food but different ingredients than what was ordered. Not sure how that happens with an online order that clearly lists each item. Will not be ordering again :( read more

I love Taco Real. The name really does say it all... real tacos people. It's not that poser Taco Bell cantina crap. They have this amazing guac/salsa stuff that I like to put on my tacos and their burritos are pretty tasty too. A night of Horchata, Taco Dinner (which comes with Spanish rice and refried beans) and a side of chips and salsa and life is good. Oh and don't forget to have some flan or cinnamon sugar empanadas for dessert. read more

So my husband and I chose this restaurant while we were in Chicago. I have had pupusas before, but he had not. So we decided to try it. When we arrived, there was a gentleman in the back cooking and a lady up from taking orders. We were the only ones there so no wait. We ordered the lunch special. 3 pupusas and a drink for $5.99. I ordered bean and cheese, and my husband ordered pork and cheese. To our delight, they were made to order and not already made! We got them to go. When we got to our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised at the size as well as the sides that came free of charge. They were approximately the size of a bread plate and were steaming hot even after a 15 min drive. We were also given the customary pickled slaw which is traditional. What surprised me were the sauces they included. There were 3 in total. We will definitely be going back! Great find! read more

Located across the street from Carol Streams village hall/police station,this little hole in wall type restaurant kicks out some of the best Steak Tacos "mexican style" I have ever had! Don't expect linen cloths and candles, but the food is authentic and delicious, it's really hard to find good pupusas in the area and these don't disappoint! I loved them!
