Tried Pupuseria Cheros during a busy lunch rush and honestly... solid 4/5. Recommended by my coworker. The service was great even while packed, and the pupusas absolutely carried the meal. The bean, cheese & jalapeño pupusa was SO good and cheesy, flavorful, huge, and worth the price. These are not tiny little pupusas either For around $4, you're getting something almost double the size compared to other places. Now for the part that dropped it from a 5 to a 4... the appetizers were rough. A few things tasted bland and kind of like they had been refried one too many times. Wow - wonderful meal here. Highly recommend Pupuseria Cheros! Came here for a midweek lunch. Got two pupusas (pork and cheese, chicken and cheese), rice and beans, chicken sandwich, and horchata. Each item was excellent. Pupusas are made fresh and are not oily; chicken sandwich had a great dipping sauce and the total flavor profile is great; horchata is sooo good with the mild peanut flavor. That's just asinine. With that out of the way, this was my first time trying Salvadoran cuisine. I've had Mexican, Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, Brazilian, Peruvian, Bolivian, and Colombian. This place is not that small, there are plenty of places to eat. I love how vibrant the inside of the restaurant looks. We ordered pupusas (pollo y queso and chicharron y queso), carne asada, mojarra frita, platanos fritos, and empanadas de platano. Overall it's a 4.5. Service was very friendly and attentive. -pupusas - (chicken and cheese, pork rinds and cheese) 5 - I really enjoyed these. I wished I had ordered more. They're kind of like tortillas stuffed with whatever you like. The chicken and cheese and pork rinds and cheese were both delicious. -carne asada 4 - I believed the waitress misunderstood me when I said medium rare instead of medium well. The meat could be cut more easily with medium rare. However, when I heated it in the microwave, I was glad that it wasn't overly chewy. -mojarra frita (tilapia) 5 - The fish was tender and flaky. Since they did cook the whole fish, be careful of the bones especially if you have children. -platanos fritos (sweet plantains) 5 - can't go wrong with plantains. We got them with sour cream. -empanadas de platano (plantain empanadas) - shape like an empanada, texture like plantain, and inside has sweet cream. These are the most authentic pupusas you will find. A lot of the pupuseria in Chicago are either Guatemalan pupusas or who ever makes them they are beyond thick. Real Salvadoran pupusas should be thin like theirs. I had two of the masa revueltas and 1 of the rice masa queso con loroco. Absolutely delicious, the curtido and sala went perfect with the pupusas. My order was for carry-out, and I waited maybe 20 minutes for the food. The entire time I waited, I could hear the sound of hands slapping out the masa for the dishes, which made me excited to know that our food would be fresh and "hand made" to order. The small dining room was lively with conversation and packed inside on an early Friday night. The only thing I found unusual and unappetizing was the side of cabbage/coleslaw packed into a ziploc bag with our to-go order. I wished it would have been in a plastic cup or container, as it was leaking, so we really didn't eat that. I am sure eating the food at the restaurant makes for a fresher presentation. The pupusas were hot, cheesy, thick, and tasty. I've had these in other states, and Pupuseria Chero rivals others for authentic taste and freshness. I have eaten here more times than I can count, and the food has always been great! I have recommended this place to so many people.

This place was delicious! It's a small spot so if you have a larger group it might be a bit more challenging, but they were able to seat us 8 because they've also got the kindest patrons! A table of four switched tables so we could combine two 4 seaters. We got the chicken & cheese pupusa, the chorizo & cheese pupusa, rice and beans, and grilled chicken meal. The pupusas were delicious! Just the right balance of stuffing and maize, fried to perfection so that it's got a slightly crunchy exterior and savory, delicate interior. The grilled chicken was also good - it was less flavorful but I think on purpose. We had two 4yos between our two families and while we typically do not let our kids run wild, these two were uncontrollable that night for some reason. And everyone, the patrons and the workers, were all kind and understanding, and made us feel welcomed and not judged. It was a wonderful family vibe, much love to this restaurant - looking forward to going again sometime! read more

This is a storefront restaurant. When we walked in there was music playing in the background, it was the perfect volume. There were only a couple of tables open, the restaurant was crowded which is always a great sign. We sat at the first table and were greeted right away with menus and we asked for water cups and got them right away. (They kept our water cups full during our entire lunch which we loved.) I ordered the steak nachos for my meal and they were piled high and so delicious, the only thing that would have made them even better would be some lime but they were great as is! My husband ordered the Chicken Guisado and loved it! He is not a fan of chicken on the bone or dark meat but he ate it all and practically licked the plate clean! If you are looking for something different you have to come here and give this place a try! Check out the menu they even have kids portions. Well darn if that isn't pretty great! I have never had Salvadoran food before and my daughter asked what it was like. And my ignorant self told my inexeprienced daughter that the foods were going to be similar to Mexican food, but different. And it is sort of... But that doesn't do it justice. First I have to mention the carne guisada. It is a slow cooked beef in spices, served with rice, beans, a vinegar based cole-slaw and it is worth the visit. It is like a home cooked meal. The pupusas are fantastic. The carmelization on the outside is so tasty, and we tried the zucchini and loroco flower and with the cheese in them, soooo good. The fried elote tamal with the sauce is addictive. The chicken tamal was better than most Mexican versions I have had. The corn meal was so smooth. Our server was so friendly and helpful and the place is clean and well lit. Bright colors make it festive. Clean bathrooms. A very well run establishment. The Salvadoran Horchata is a flavored rice drink that is both refreshing and compliments the meal. Subtle taste of cinnamon but doesn't overpower the drink. It went exceptionally well with the entree! The pupusa's were served piping hot and tasted amazing. I tried the Loroco y queso (flower buds & cheese) and the pollo y queso (chicken & cheese). The loroco buds have a flavor of artichoke meets asparagus and very light. The seasoned chicken was generously portioned with a nice amount of cheese inside the corn (masa) flour mixture. The Pupusa's are all hand made to order, very economical and so delicious! The fresh made slaw was a nice compliment along side the salsa's. It cleanses your palate as you're eating. Pupuseria Cheros has been open for one month and it is a fantastic addition to the Schaumburg dining scene. It's located in a strip mall on Higgins near the corner of Plum Grove Road. We drove passed it last night and decided to give it a try today. WOW ! Cute decor and friendly helpful service. We tried a chicken (only) pupusa, chicken and cheese, bean cheese and jalapeños, a jalapeño and cheese and sides of rice and beans. Our favorite was the jalapeño and cheese but ALL were delicious. Fresh tender crust with tasty fillings made even better by the side of pickled cabbage and sauces. We washed it all down with Jarritos although there are other soft drink choices. Pupusas are Salvadoran but there are plenty of your favorite Mexican choices to choose from if you should be craving tacos or burritos. This place is definitely a win and we will be back again soon. Saw this on my way and I had to stop by. It's a little spot kind of hidden. They have a couple tables and booths to dine in. The staff was nice and they took our drink order. My boys had jarritos pineapple. We then placed our food order and I got a couple different pupusa. Chicken Pupusa, bean & cheese, and jalapeño&beans&cheese. The jalapeño with the beans and cheese was so delicious and just the right amount of heat. The beans and cheese is amazing but if you like a bit of spicy I recommend getting that jalapeño one. The chicken with cheese is good I was a bigger fan of the beans and cheese with jalapeño and there hot sauce on it is even better. There mild sauce tastes a lot like condiments. My wife ordered Pupusas Revueltas and they where so good. My kids have never had pupusas so they tried steak taco but that was a big no no. The seasoning on the steak tacos wasn't good and once's they tried the pupusas they feel in love with them. We order a couple more of the jalapeño with beans and cheese. Also, the price of the pupusas is excellent they are pretty cheap. The coleslaw which I'm not big on but my wife does like it said it was very good. The plantains with lechera wow what a great appetizer/dessert. I forgot to mention they make pupusas fresh as you order and there thin a nice decent size.
