Being from California, I'm always looking for good Mexican food prepared similarly to what we get there from the middle of the state all the way down through Baja California to Los Cabos and beyond. The food here is good. The Al pastor is quite tasty. The guacamole is also very good. It just seems as though it's impossible to find a burrito anywhere east of the Mississippi that resembles what we get on the west coast. The service was good. A little bit of a slow pace, but definitely checked back and made sure I had everything I needed. As far as the general vibe goes... it's great! The music is certainly authentic Mexican music. This place rocks! Connected to the little Mexican supermarket next door. Inside looks like a fun street fair. Service is quick and you get chips and salsa as per usual. But this is different. The salsa is great! Not your run of the mill bland salsa. Menu comes in in English and Spanish Ordered tacos and a tamale. That tamale was AMAZING. Like I want to crawl in it and sleep. The mole sauce on top was so smoky and flavorful and the tamale was tender and not a dry spot to be seen. Had beef cheek and chicharrone tacos and they were so filling. Unassuming from the outside but inside you're transported to an exotic locale. Once seated you are served authentic Mexican tortilla chips. The food is still fantastic here but after todays lunch outing, I have to lower our overall experience. Hopefully they can fix this serious issue in the future. It was only around 11:30 am as we walked in & sat down. As soon as we sat down a man drunker than cooter brown, from the next booth, jumped up from his seat & tried to throw punches at the waiter. Several employees has to quickly come and intervene. The waitress quickly moved us to the back of the restaurant, I ask what the problem was & she just said "they came in that way" (Completely drunker than cooter brown) I said "it's not even noon" and she just shrugged her shoulders and walked off. Business's have the right to refuse business to anyone for any reason. If some one shows up at your place so drunk they want to fight and throw punches at everyone for no reason you should not let them in your establishment for the safety of not only yourself & your staff but your customers as well. I do appreciate you moving us to a safe location immediately. That was very kind of you all. And you successfully deescalated the situation. However, you all can't let this kind of thing happen again in the future. It could have gone a totally different direction & someone could have been injured or God forbid worse. Not to mention, you can be sued. We love you guys, your food is amazing. Lunch was perfect as always. However, we could have done without the drunken cowboys fight club side show. If your going to let drunken cowboys dine in for lunch, we won't be back. No Bueno. Really good authentic Mexican right next door to the more American Mexican Vallartas (ie cheese dip and pricier for no reason) All of the food is really authentic and one of the only places in Pensacola I've found that has breaded steak and authentic black beans. I love the new location on Pensacola Blvd. They've done a very good job! The store is large and well stocked, with bakery products and meat section. As you enter the restaurant is on the right and looks very cute. Everyone is very nice and super friendly. We ordered some food to take with us. You may need some help with the translation of the menu. My Spanish is spotty but I was still able to make out most of the items. Everything we had was wonderful! I'm so loving this store! read more

This place is the most authentic Mexican we have found in Pensacola yet. Please keep on mind one of us here is Mexican so we know what we are talking about. Let's start off with the tamale OMG nice and soft and flavorful, not like others that are all dried out. The shrimp cocktail very good on spot. We tried the tacos and they were flavorful and just the right size. Next time because there will be a next time we will try more. There aren't a lot of seats so you might have to wait a little for a table, we went in for lunch on a Saturday and waited 10 minutes for a table not too bad. It's also attached to a Mexican market so just in case you need any Mexican supplies or a pinata! read more

I've been a couple of times and there's nothing remarkable or exceptional about the food. It's not that the food is bad, it's that the food that I had was thoroughly mediocre. My first visit, I got steak tacos on soft corn tortillas to go, to have for dinner at work. The meat was gristly and there wasn't much of it, for the price. I wasn't impressed, but I wanted to have a sit-down meal before I jelled my judgment. I stopped by after work yesterday and had the steak enchiladas combo with verde sauce. The plate had three enchiladas, refried black beans, rice, some lettuce, and a tomato slice. The picture on the menu showed a dollop of sour cream on the lettuce--which I didn't get. The beans were not microwaved long enough and were still cool. The rice was microwaved too long, and I'm pretty sure that the steak was reheated, wrapped in the tortillas, glopped with cold verde sauce, sprinkled with cheese, and microwaved some more. Again, thoroughly mediocre and possibly deserving of less than the number of stars that I give this place. The service was apathetic my first visit, but exceptional yesterday. The place is clean and you can poke around the attached grocery store while you wait. But overall, I can't recommend Taco Mex for either the tacos or the enchiladas. Maybe there's something on the menu that's an exemplar of the genre, but I may never discover it, because I know where to get the best tacos in Pcola and several better places to eat enchiladas verde. read more

I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the best restaurant in Pensacola, much less just the best Mexican restaurant. A couple things: this isn't your neon-colored-margaritas and ooey gooey cheese dip Mexican restaurant. No, that's next door at Vallarta. What you will find here is authentic Mexican food. The tacos are traditional with radishes on the side, served with onion and cilantro on top and two ice cold bottles of sauces. The barbacoa beef is so full of flavor and tender, and the al pastor is fanatically tender pork with little bursts of pineapple. The guacamole is made fresh and the best you'll ever taste, for a fraction of the cost of other fresh made guacamole in town. You get salsa, literal smooth sauce with no chunks and thicker style chips brought to your table. The Valentina Extra Hot on the table is actually not that hot at all (I would say medium) and very vinegary in flavor. It tastes amazing in the salsa or anything else. Do yourself a favor and get a side of cebollitas asada, grilled green onion bulbs. They are delicious with everything or buy themselves. The tamales are moist, wrapped in banana leaves and filled with chunks of tender pork. Two is a hugely filling meal, they're very big. Everyone I have brought here has just loved it and has in turn brought someone else. The atmosphere is festive and bright inside and the connected grocery store sells the best avocados you'll ever have. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Taco Mex was one of the first Mexican spots I came across in Pensacola since moving over here from California. I generally order a few tacos and have a Jarritos then I head over to the grocery story that is attached to it and grab a few Mexican candies and some tamales (which are already premade and frozen). Next door to the supermercado is a local panaderia that sells AMAZING breads! During the Spring/Summer they also have fruta mexicana where they add chamoy, tajin, and a few other goodies to your fruit bowls. read more

One word: AUTHENTIC. Having lived in Los Angeles and San Diego, I have been so frustrated with the claims of authenticity from places like Rio Bravo and Cactus Flower. This place is the patch of Mexican cuisine heaven I have been searching for in Pensacola for months. Burritos the size of a small child. Homemade horchata. They don't use shredded Cheddar cheese crap, they use Crema Fresca. It is true California style Mexican food, from the aesthetics to the homemade flour tortillas. The menu is in Spanish. But that shouldn't be a problem, if people are skipping La Hacienda to come here, they probably know how to order REAL tacos. I just can't rave about this place enough. I can't wait to go back. The place is really a "little hole in the wall" restaurant. Flooring looks like they just used a lot of leftover tiles. Could look cleaner. Took quite a while before my order arrived but it was super hot when it did. Great portion! Hostess was friendly. Would probably be easier if I spoke Spanish, but, I was able to order something delicious without too much of an issue. The problem for me was where I sat. There are two a/c units in the small room. The one almost directly above me came on and rattled for 20 solid minutes. It was very annoying. The food, though, was well-worth the wait. It seems like it was cooked to order. You don't get the complimentary chips and salsa like most places, though. I will definitely visit again! read more

What a gem! This very unassuming place is the real deal: authentic Mexican food at a very reasonable price. The dining area is small, which is a good thing. It is clean and very colorful --- just like you would find in Mexico. The food is fresh and delicious. I was hungry (as usual) and ordered 4 tacos: pollo, carne asada, carnitas and al pastor. Each one was bursting with flavor. The two sauces on the table really added depth to the over all flavor of the tacos, with masking them with extreme heat. The server was extremely pleasant as she efficiently handled the entire dining area by herself. This place is far from fancy, but it as as authentic as it gets.
