Found this little gem on Yelp. Located in a little strip mall on Golf Road in Niles. They have a salsa bar, with 6 different salsas. I came alone for dinner on a Saturday night, since my wife and daughter were out of town, and my son was busy. I ordered the Chimichanga with ground beef. It was very large, fried to a golden brown, and pleasantly surprised that it came covered in a white queso cheese sauce. Excellent Chimi. For dessert, I had the fried ice cream, and despite it's large size, easily enough for 2 people, I ate the whole thing!! It was out of sight. I will definitely be back with my family. The staff are extremely friendly. A young man came out to ask me how my meal was, and if I needed anything. How nice. My daughter ate their birria tacos and got food poisoning. She ate at at the restaurant after going to a movie and when we came back she said her stomach hurt. We were out in the burbs and hangry so we searched Yelp for nearby good, cheap eats and settled on Taco Maya. Yelp reviewers did not disappoint. We had the al pastor, shrimp and steak tacos. I can't pick a favorite, they were all really good. If you dine in, you get complimentary chips with warm salsa. There is also a salsa bar with delicious pickled spicy carrots. Why haven't I heard of this place yet? It is amazing!!! It was so authentic and delicious we couldn't stop to take a picture of the plate with food. I highly recommend it. We had the signature taco to begin which by the way was scrumptious. I had the steak Milanesa torta and my wife had the Al Pastor Torta. Both of which were very tasty. We washed our food down with their horchata which has free refills and is one of the best horchatas around. Very pleasantly surprised and we will be back for their Margaritas and bar service.!!! read more

Ever go to a place that's so good, you're mad at yourself for not knowing about it sooner, and sad for all the times you could've been there already? That's Taco Maya for me. Don't be fooled by the exterior - this place is fantastic. I got the carnitas taco, al pastor taco, and the signature taco. Carnitas & pastor were excellent, and the signature was very good (just a tad too much bacon, which are words I never thought I'd say). You have the choice of flour and corn tortillas, which I appreciated. We also got a beer and margarita- I liked the margarita and was happy it wasn't overly sweet. Since we dined in, our meal came with chips, which were really good and a total pleasant surprise! Imagine delicate tortilla chips, but with 1/20 the seasoning of a dorito chip. Whatever it was, I wanted more. They have a modest salsa bar, but I mostly ate the warm red salsa that came with the chips because the salsas were too spicy for my wimpy self. TacoMadre is brand new hidden gem located on corner of Golf and Greenwood. This place is by far the best Taco joint in this town. As soon as I walked in I was greeted right away by the cashier who I believe was the owner. Was very nice and friendly. I ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos and side of guacamole dip. The Mahi Mahi tacos were excellent. Better then I thought it would be. So much flavor and the fish was nice and crispy. The guacamole dip was really good as well. I'm not sure what they added on chips but they put some sort of seasoning on them which made it taste that much better. The inside was very nice and clean I love that they have a salsa bar with different flavors to try. The decorations were really nice. Loved the art work on the wall. Updated review - lost a star due to poor service on my most recent visit. I realize ordering on May 5th might not be the most ideal, but when placing an order 2 hours before pick up, I expect the order to be there... Placed an online order at 4pm for a 6pm pick up. Upon arrival at 6 pm, I was told they couldn't even find the grub hub order. So they ended up having to make it while they were busy. We had to wait an additional hour for the food to be prepared. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. I get that they were busy, especially on "cinco de Mayo", I would hope the order is expedited and prioritized but it wasn't. Sounds very snobby of me but when you place an advanced order, I expect it to be ready at the ordered time. They also forgot three of our tacos and when confronted about it, they insisted it was there. Had to prove to them we were missing some food for them to make it. Food is still good but the customer service was poor on that experience. We'll see if we order from there again... read more

Amaazzzinnnngggg. I loovveeee this place. Yes I'm stretching out my words only because I really want to put an emphasis on how much I enjoyed it. Their menu is a little different. I seen "paneer tacos" on there and a few other items that were unique to me. I had a steak tostada, shrimp taco and Aztec taco which was shrimp, queso blanco with chorizo on top. The taco dinner came with rice and beans. I was on the ambo that day so I had to take everything to go unfortunately but the place had a nice sized seating area and I wish I could have dined in. The steak tostada was bommnbbb! The steak was seasoned nicely and the presentation was beautiful. I loved everything I ordered. The rice and beans was put in a separate container and it was loaded. I was just about to order and then I looked at their new prices. 18$ for a steak burrito and no sides. 5$ for a small 3 bite taco. I mean the food is good but I just can't. I have been getting tacos from them for years and their prices were always more than others but this is just crazy. I remember people complaining about price increase during covid and how the owner promised to bring prices down after the supply chain issues was gone. I guess that did not happen. Very good eats! I'm not an expert at Mexican food, but I love food in general and this lived up to standards. There were a few different types of salsa to choose from, each one tasted flavorful and fresh. If you are not a huge fan of cilantro or complex flavors this probably won't be for you, but all the salsas I tried were unique and flavorful. The chips were amazing, and I loved the seasoning on them. We split fajitas and it was enough for us to share which earns so many points in my book. Very good portion size and the plate came out sizzling and piping hot. Also included guacamole, sour cream, amazing beans served in a tostada shell and rice. I appreciated that the beans were not over salted. They were perfect. Cheese would have been nice... but for everything we got I can't complain. The steak was decent and it wasn't so tough that you couldn't enjoy it. It was cooked more towards the well side. I like the thought that steak cooked well equals safe food standards, medium steak if possible would be really tasty too though if it was an option. The veggies and meat had a great grill flavor. Soooo good! Ordered the 3 taco plate - you can mix and match however you like - Mahi Mahi, shrimp and Chilango for me! Fish was crisp and flaky, didn't soften with the flavorful chipotle mayo; shrimp were plentiful and large; chilango is a mix of steak and chorizo with a spicy blend of jalapeño and onion - delish! Tacos are a good size and at less than $3 each this is a steal! The rice and beans accompanying the tacos, however, left something to be desired - I'd forego this the next time. Mexican corn (elotes) was a perfect appetizer - cheesy, creamy, touch of spice - yum! Also ordered the horchata drinks - I have nothing to compare it to as I've never had horchata before, but I absolutely loved it. Kind of like sweet cinnamon milk. Extremely not happy with the service. I had put in an online order for pickup 2hrs ahead and yet when it was time to pick up they said they didn't see an order for it. Had to provide them the order number and name and they still said they didn't see it. After checking some more they were able to find my order and tell me it will take an hour. Waited for almost 2 hours before they were done with my order. Lucky I checked the order before I left because they forgot one order and when I told them they said everything was in the bag. SMH. Note that I wasn't the only one waiting. Other ubereats and grubhub drivers were waiting to pick up their order as well. Employees there did not prioritize the orders. People coming into dine were given their orders before mine. Since they made the mistake in missing my order they should've tried to get it done as soon as possible. It wasn't even a big order yet had to wait for 2hrs. What's the point of me placing an order with a pickup time and it not being ready when I go to pick it up! Management needs to step up. read more

It's so hard to find good tacos in the suburbs. I usually end up getting a bunch of food when I visit friends and family in the city because places in the north suburbs aren't that great. Then I discovered Taco Maya. What the heck took me so long to find this spot? The meat was seasoned perfectly and not like I have to pour a bunch of salsa on it to taste good. The grilled veggies were perfect and the black beans & rice was fresh (not dry and gross like it was made a week ago, then nuked in the microwave). My husband said his steak taco was flavorful and he loved the grilled onions over the raw onions. And the elote was perfect. I love, love, love that even though it wasn't on the cobb, it was still flavorful. In addition, the customer service was good. I called twice and they were friendly, then the came out to my car to hand us our food when we arrived to pick it up. The only recommendation I have is that they should insert photos or better descriptions of the food for online ordering (maybe that's a function of Chow Now). I wanted something in a hard shell bowl, but didn't know which of the "salads" came in the bowl. Otherwise, good choice if you're craving a good taco or elote. read more

Was craving tacos and remembered that this place was pretty popular, but I've never given it a try before. It was pretty busy for a Saturday night. We arrived to line up and order, but their screen kept alternating between a menu list and food pictures, and it also never stayed long enough to really read what's on the menu. I decided on two al pastor tacos ($2.69 each) and a steak tostada ($3.99), and my husband had the steak burrito ($7.99). Somehow our total came out to be $19 and it seemed pretty ridiculous. Just an FYI, steak options are $1 extra, which I did not know. Listed prices I saw for tostadas were $2.99 and burritos were $6.99. With that said, food took a really long time. We were given complimentary chips and salsa, which tasted like a warm tomato sauce. Chips tasted thin, crisp, and fresh. The flavor of the "salsa" was good, but it really wasn't salsa which was a bit off putting for us. When our food was finally ready, my steak tostada was barely lukewarm and tasted very bland. The steak quality itself was good and had big chunks, but just not good flavor. My husband's steak burrito was sad looking and not well filled out, also lacking flavor. The al pastor taco was actually good, but again not really al pastor. It was more like a savory bbq pork dish thrown into a tortilla. Very flavorful and saucy, but I still want real al pastor tacos. All in all, the steak options are way overpriced and flavorless. Salsa is eh, and so are the sauces at the salsa bar. Al pastor was good but definitely not a real Mexican al pastor. Mahi Mahi tacos are the best. The sauce is unique and tasty. The shrimp tacos are ok. We weren't able to order the steak tacos online so I'm not sure if they serve them or not. We love the grilled chicken burrito. The sear is good and the ingredients are fresh. The accompanying hot sauces are ok. Could be better. We will try them again! Delivery is fast! Hidden in a strip mall , this is one of our favorite taco joints. It is a very casual, order at the counter restaurant. Prices are reasonable and the selections are plentiful. The staff are friendly and do not rush you as you are making your selections. We had the taco salad, and 3 speciality tacos. The salsa bar is a great addition, but be warned the medium salsa selections are pretty hot and the hot take it up several notches. Orders are accompanied by chips and warm salsa. It would be nice if the salsa portion was a bit larger, because we tend to use alot of salsa with our meals. I had the taco salad with chicken. The portion was large and included fresh avocado. The menu states vegetables, but the salad had a significant amount of chopped green peppers. I do not like green peppers, and would have appreciated knowing the veggies were green peppers. However, I was able to easily remove them. The tacos we tried were the Cajun spice shrimp. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and the mango pico complemented the shrimp with a sweet, fruity taste. We also tried the Yukon Shrimp taco. The chorizo and shrimp together were a perfect blend. The cilantro topping added a bit of spice. The third taco we tried by far was the best, it was the Korean Beef taco. The beef was moist and the addition of red cabbage, onions , jalapenos and cilantro was the perfect pairing. The place overall is really cute to decoration how everything set up. I will say this they're pricing is a little bit overpriced. The salsas fire they are really good. The chips are also very good. Under rice water is good is also known as Horchata. I came here with a friend on a week night around 8ish and it was packed which is always a good sign. My friend had tried them when they were at Taco fest in highwood and told me she absolutely loved their shrimp tacos so I knew I had to go try them out with her. When you arrive, the guys take your order and give you a pager for when your food will be ready so I like that it's casual enough but yet the atmosphere doesn't make it look like a hole in the wall kind of place. They have a salsa bar which i can't say anything really caught my eye as I prefer their warmer salsa they serve. I ordered the shrimp taco, an el pastor taco and a steak taco and basically had a dinner for about $10 which is a good deal in my opinion. Our food was ready pretty fast and we picked it on up. There presentation was also very nice as the tacos definitely looked appetizing. I really liked the shrimp taco with the aoli sauce so definitely order that one if you come here, the pastor taco was also pretty good but not as good as the shrimp taco. The steak taco was okay, a little on the chewy side but definitely edible. Overall, the place is a nice casual Wednesday night dinner, a little further away from me but if I'm in the area I would definitely come back and just get those super yummy shrimp tacos.
