Topping/sauce bar
Michaela D.

My boyfriend had been raving about this hidden gem for weeks, so I was excited to finally check it out with our two friends. It is most definitely authentic, so if that's your priority then this is the spot for you. We joked about how you know it's an authentic Mexican restaurant when there is a little convenience store attached... this place had that! We were in a bit of a rush though, so we didn't check it out. Their menu is pretty simple. I am a taco girl, so it was awesome to see that they serve you the meat in a delicious, fresh corn tortilla and you are set to go fix it up yourself at the topping bar. They have everything you could want from a variety of spicy sauces, to pickled onions, to fresh cilantro and everything in between. I ordered the carnitas taco and this is where I was left disappointed. There was so much fattiness in the meat that I ended up picking out most of it and eating a taco of just the fresh toppings. I really enjoyed everything else about this place though, so I will definitely be back to try different meats & hopefully update with a 5 star review.

Convenience Store storefront!

These were literally the best Tacos I've eaten in my entire life. I wish I hadn't eaten them because now I cannot stop thinking about eating them every waking moment. They have a bar to dress your tacos. The meats are tender, bold flavour and very juicy! I'm not a fan of corn tortillas but it went well together with the meat. I'm upset I didn't know about this place sooner. I've had tacos from other restaurants in the past and the meat would always be dry, lacking flavour, tough going down. I will be eating here again! Highly recommended. Right next door there also a little ethnic convenience store with lots of different types of snacks, cooking items and drinks!

Asada tacos

Growing up in Southern California has made me very particular about tacos, but these are the best tacos I've had since moving to Virginia! The asada was delicious, although I think it could have used more of a char on the meat. Even so, these were some great tacos!

This place is great! It's counter service, and most things are made to order. It's a small place so it takes a few minutes to get your food. This doesn't mean it's slow. I love Mexican food, and this place is the best in the area!

We decided on an early dinner this evening and stopped by La Hacienda Street Food and Taqueria,…read morelocated at 2007 South Military Highway in the heart of Chesapeake. The staff is always welcoming here, and one of the things we appreciate most is the consistency. Whether it's your first visit or your tenth, the food is reliably fresh, flavorful, and served with a smile. After a rather indulgent lunch, we decided to keep dinner light and split the Chicken Taco Salad along with a small quesadilla. The taco salad arrived in a crisp tortilla bowl piled high with seasoned chicken, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and plenty of melted cheese. The quesadilla was nicely toasted with tender chicken and gooey cheese, while the creamy refried beans rounded out the meal perfectly. Everything was simple, satisfying, and prepared with care. If you're looking for authentic Mexican street food, friendly service, and generous portions at a fair price, La Hacienda continues to deliver. It's the kind of dependable neighborhood restaurant that earns repeat visits, and we'll certainly be back.

I've eaten from here many times and would normally give this establishment 5-stars, but my…read moreexperience today with a simple one-item takeout order was disappointing. The food is DELICIOUS!!! I ordered my usual, Juan's shrimp chimichanga. It also seemed that servers on staff were attentive to customers, both in-house and those waiting for takeout. Even for a smaller dining experience, it's still cozy and enjoyable. I normally have my food delivered, but decided to save a little money and pickup on my way home. However, ordering for pick-up today, it seemed chaotic upon arrival. Staff were calling orders/names, but much of the food sitting was not for anyone there. I placed my order in advance (1:41 p.m.) so it would already be done when I arrived (about a 15-minute drive), but did not receive my food until well after 2:20 p.m. This restaurant on food alone would receive 5-stars from me, but due to today's wait, I'd have to leave it at 4-stars. If I were dining-in, I would not mind waiting for the food, but for a pickup order and my family waiting in the car for an order that was supposed to be ready, it was a bit disappointing. I've seen some restaurants shut down delivery services during peak restaurant service times so they can focus on customers, or vice versa. It takes a great deal of balance to manage both sides effectively. Otherwise, I highly recommend the food!!

Okay, friend and I came here around 10p (I think they closed at 11p) on a Friday night. The place…read morewas quite empty (there were a few folks in there, but it was by no means busy), and we were seated right away. Now we knew we were trying it by coming in so late and kind of close to closing time, so we were by no means making a fuss about what would or would not be available. Our waiter was very nice (albeit a bit awkward), but we were able to order quickly and in true good Mexican food restaurant fashion, the food came out quickly as well. It was all fresh and quite good (I believe I ordered street tacos and my friend ordered birria tacos). Missed opportunity for them not having sauces on the table, but also understanding that a) it was late, and b) all Mexican restaurants don't do this, especially if they are not a taqueria or another spot that focuses on tacos. The ambiance was fine, nothing special, but it felt nice in there. The seats weren't too close together, and even the booths had quite a bit of room, so that was nice. It was also all a good price, in my opinion! I would definitely go back to this spot, and honestly I'm kind of curious to know if it's different at different times of the day (Saturday afternoon/evening vs. a weekday/night).

Started with the blood orange margarita which was a 0/5 stars. It was awful. The spicy salsa they brought was also awful, the mild salsa was pretty okay. The chips were pretty good too. I ordered the Al pastor quesadilla and it had good flavor, but the lettuce salad looked old and the rice was overcooked. My friend got the spinach and chicken enchiladas and said they were decent. I don't know how someone could call this "authentic " Mexican. Only those who have never had authentic Mexican would! I would not return and do not recommend.

Waiter was quick to bring us chips and salsa and also take our drink orders. I tried their large Midnight Margarita (10/10) I loved the flavor and it was STRONG! For food, I was craving steak, and saw Steak El Amigo (10/10) on the menu. It was very flavorful, tender, seasoned, cooked exactly how I wanted it, and more than enough food for me. The steak was topped with cheese sauce, shrimp, fajita vegetables, peppers, and mushrooms. Also came with a side of rice and beans and tortillas. Def my new go to spot for sure. Already planning to go back next Tuesday, this time, to try some tacos and other drinks! My overall rate of experience : 10/10

We were sat immediately around 630 on a Friday evening. We received chips and dips before I could even sit down! Our server promptly greeted us and drinks were ready within minutes. So far, so good. For dinner, hubby had the Vegetarian E which came with a burrito, quesadilla and chalupa, daughter had the kids quesadilla with beans and I initially selected the shrimp bowl. Our food took about 15 minutes. Both quesadillas were barely warm and the cheese wasn't even melted. The refried beans were loaded with red pepper and too spicy for my child. My shrimp bowl was overwhelmed by cheese and aioli that I couldn't stomach it. Our server kindly let me order something else so I selected the shrimp taco salad. It arrived shortly thereafter but was also so greasy it made my stomach turn. 2 stars just for service. 0 for food. Overall, this meal was an unfortunate waste of $50.

We started the night with drinks: I went for a cold Modelo, while my friends both ordered margaritas, and wouldn't stop raving about how good they were! For appetizers, we shared the Union Trio! Fire roasted tomato salsa, creamy guacamole, and queso served with crisp tortilla chips. All three were fresh and delicious, a great way to kick off the meal. For my main, I mixed things up with a taco trio! Carne Asada (marinated steak, onion, queso fresco, avocado, cilantro), Chicken Tinga (marinated chicken, refried black beans, avocado, greens, queso fresco, cilantro) and Blackened Mahi (mezcal pickled onion, red cabbage, red pepper pico, chipotle sauce, cilantro). The blackened mahi was my hands down favorite. It was super flavorful with just the right amount of heat. My friends tried some awesome dishes too! One had the Coconut Curry Mahi (blackened mahi, jasmine rice, edamame succotash, with a rich coconut curry cream sauce) and the other had the Duck Confit Taco (with cherry salsa, pickled carrot salad, and cilantro-lime creme). Our waitress was phenomenal and definitely suggested great choices. If you're in the area and craving something a little more elevated than your average Mexican spot, Union is absolutely worth checking out. Great food, tasty drinks, and a stylish atmosphere!
