First time here at Pelon's, this place was recommended by a friend. First thing I noticed with this restaurant is you order first then receive your food. My partner and I ordered the Carne Asada fries, the full size. The portion you get for that is huge. If splitting I would still recommend getting a half but they were absolutely delicious. He also ordered the tacos which came out great as well. I love the atmosphere of this restaurant, it has a nice vibe if you're wanting to hang with friends. Wanted to meet up with a close friend to catch up over dinner, and we both chose Pelon's Baja Grill on General Booth. Having eaten at Pelon's before with our husbands, we knew it would be the perfect place for us to enjoy good food and great conversation in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Pelon's has a weekday happy hour from 3-6 PM for dine-in only on 3 tacos for $9, Pelon's house margarita for $9, and $1 off draft beer. The friendly server at the order counter not only greeted us, but she let us know that it was better to order 3 tacos instead of 2 tacos since it was happy hour! It was cheaper! Yay! The carne asada tacos and chicken tacos were so good! And we couldn't resist sharing an order of queso and chips. So yummy! The chips at Pelon's are light and crispy, and the queso is so flavorful. There were no discernible spices on the chicken, not even salt, and the chicken was very dry, covered by a thin layer of shredded cheese and a giant pile of shredded iceberg lettuce. But get past that strange set up, and let the food speak do the talking. And honey, I'm here to tell you, they UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT for us vegans! Their menu options for vegans was impressive! I ordered Gardein chicken nachos with vegan cheese and vegan sour cream...and simply put, it was legendary! My four star review is only because the cashier told me if I wanted a true vegan meal, then to avoid the refried beans (they are not vegan). I ordered "chik'n" instead of beans and still got the beans and "chik'n". I didn't really mind because I ordered the guacamole as an appetizer--and it was heavenly. I ate so much guac and chips, I really was full by the time my entree arrived. When I go back (and I plan on returning regularly now), I will order just the guacamole and chips as my meal. This is def one of my new fave Mexican restaurants! Food is fantastic, wait time is almost non-existent or not even noticeable (as long as you have good company). The flavor of every item is in every bite!! Finally a place where I get the best bang for the buck. Awesome vegan menu with so many options. Very cool to go to such an inclusive restaurant where vegan food is so abundant. I've wanted to stop by Pelon's and give it a try for a while now bc I drive past it every day. For Friday night dinner last week we decided to do it. We browsed the website and saw they offer easy mobile take-out orders and I joined their program for rewards (sweet!). We chose a range of items from the menu and all were good. We got a single person serving of chips and salsa for $2.25 and a single person serving of chips and queso for $3.25. A single serving is enough for two people. The salsa was good with larger chunks of onion while the queso was a bit bland for me, the bf loved it though. He chose for his main course the Pelons Famous Fish Tacos (2 size) for $7.25 and he loved them. They were simple and good cali-style taco with breaded white fish, shredded cabbage, salsa and Baja sauce. Nice size and great flavor combo. I chose the not for the faint of heart burrito called The Curl for $9.35 + $1 up-charge for a wheat tortilla. This burrito is large and in-charge. It has tons of white fish inside, refried beans, shredded cabbage, salsa and Baja sauce. I also added jalapeño, onion, and cilantro for no extra charge on the app. Yum! It was big so I by no means finished it but it would do nicely for a person with a healthy appetite. We both also ordered Elote bc I LOVE street corn and we didn't wanna share. We got the standard with lime chili sauce and tons of cotija cheese. Yuuummmmm. One of the best versions of Elote I've had in HR. A single serving size is one entire ear of corn cut in half with sticks inserted as handles (easier to handle and less messy with the cheese all around) for $4. They have a Sriracha version that intrigued me.... saving it for another time. I like the menu and saw several items I'd like to try - service was quick and food was ready when we arrived. This was my 1st time at the Red Mill location. Plenty of parking which is nice. Very clean inside - you can tell it's new. I was there at an odd time of day so I was the only one. I decided to sit at the bar. And I made it for HH which was great! The bartender was very friendly once we started talking. I wish I got her name. HH was 3-6 Tues-Fri. Large margarita was $8 and 3 tacos were $8. They do have a kids menu and vegan options. They do have to be all the same. I got the Famous Fish Tacos. They came out incredibly fast. They were good. The tortillas fell apart so they were a bit messy. I added hot sauce - I thought they were a bit bland. I also ordered the chips and guac for 1. I like the chips because they are thin but they do have a tendency to break but I like them thin. The guac was kind of bland. And I know this sounds stupid but the dip to chip ratio was way off!!! I either want more guacamole or less chips. There was a huge amount of chips left over which were just thrown out. The menus do not have prices on them - prices are only listed where you order on the board. I would definitely go back and recommend. Ugh... I hate that I was disappointed, because my memories of eating Pelon's 10+ years ago when I lived in Norfolk are of great food and good service. This just didn't compare... at all. The service was friendly (star #1) when I came in this afternoon and they were helpful to quickly prepare my take-out order and point out the salsa "bar" if I needed some to go. The chunky guacamole (star #2) is a must-order with the provided chips. The stars end here, I'm afraid. The salsa bar is nothing more than squeeze bottles so you can't really see what you're getting until you squirt it out. There are 3 options. They provide chips with the orders, but they were not at all salted and very thick, which I don't care for, but that's a personal preference. I love a thinner, super crispy chip. My coworkers ordered various burritos, and I may try one next time as they didn't have any complaints. I used to always get shrimp tacos in Norfolk, and they were my absolute favorite! I had the surfside salad, which is more topping than salad. I was digging through the mounds of tortilla strips, guacamole, salsa and cheese to find the lettuce. The shrimp were flavorful, but overcooked. I didn't need any dressing because of all the crap on top. If you want a light lunch, this salad is not for you! I don't have much to say about this place but the staff is very welcoming and the decor is decent. During the COVID pandemic they still allow you to sit and enjoy your meal which is nice to me. I enjoyed the fish tacos but the fish was bit tough to chew and there was a lot of cabbage and I didn't like it. The guacamole was delicious! I didn't have to add additions salt and it was fresh. I also ordered a watermelon margarita, I don't like watermelon but I thought maybe I'd love the drink buttt I was wrong. The newest location of Pelon's Baja Grill opened two weeks ago to the day. This is my first visit as I have not dined in Norfolk or their original store in the Virginina Beach Oceanfront. A Richmond store was shuttered this year. The location is on the corner of Nimmo Parkway & General Booth in a new shopping area that opened late Summer of 2019. I easily found parking and the lot was free of debris. The exterior signage is large and bright on both sides of the building for road visibility. The set up of the restaurant is fast casual. Customers get in line to order and pay. Menu boards assist guest. Regulars will find the menu identical to their other stores. However beer list unique. The bar offers full service. Restrooms are in front. I found the men's room clean with proper supplies. The dining room offers an abundance of seating by table and chairs and was approximately half full. High ceilings, drop lighting and concrete floors offer visitors a relaxed atmosphere for dining. Flat screen TV's are sprinkled around the room. A mega wall hanging of a surfer on a humongous wave brings a California vibe to Virginia Beach. The owner is from Orange County, CA. I decided to try them during Happy Hour which is M-F / 3-6. The deal is buy 2 tacos get 1 taco FREE! Jumbo Margaritas $6 come regular or strawberry. I loved both, but Strawberry was my preferred. A large tap beer list is on a flat screen. However it's almost impossible to view from the end of the bar. The staff was friendly at all times. Unfortunately not as efficient at water refills. The owner John introduced himself. His passion about the business was obvious. He focuses on his menu being fresh and is proud to be a local among a lot of chain in the shopping center. He loves meeting his guest and discussing his menu. I had the taco trio special (fish, chorizo, shrimp) w/ jumbo margarita and house chips. I adored the Orange County take on their tacos that popped with flavors. My favorite was the shrimp. Both regular and Strawberry margaritas strong and yum! I also included chips with a trio of salsa, guacamole and queso. The house made chips delicious. The queso money, the guacamole flat and salsa flavorless. After a single visit I want more! I will return and try additional items on the menu. Upon exiting there was a line to the door. There is obviously a lot of excitement about their newest store. I recommend Pelon's and afford a 4.5. What's not to love about Pelons. Pelons is fresh food served fast. I was a little confused on the concept at first because you ordered at the Register like fast food but can seat yourself like a dine in restaurant. I ordered fish tacos and a side of Elote. It took well over 25 minutes to receive my order. Not sure if they had to catch the fish first but it took awhile. 1st time here. Very nice location. Love the big windows with all the natural beautiful sunlight coming in and if you needed additional emotional lighting. They have cool string lights that dance along the ceiling. Decorated with lots of surfing. It adds to the good feel. I like the tables and chairs, casual and beachy. Drink selection good. They run specials on food. I love that. We got fish and carna asada tacos. Nice because we get one of each. We will be working our way through the menu. Fish taco: were tasty but I would have liked more meat. I just paid $20 for a burrito that had 4 pieces of shrimp in it. I ordered a burrito substituting the protein with fried shrimp. Instead I got five gallons of guac and maybe 4 pieces of shrimp. Then I call to speak to the manager. And their response is, she's too busy to speak. Quality food. Quality service.  20 bucks for crappy service and food. We ordered dinner online, which we've done numerous times. As usual, the food wasn't ready for another 10 minutes past the time given on the Toast app...very irritating! I ordered the California Burrito, which I've had before and usually love. It was NOT fresh. The carne asada was cold, cheese wasn't melted inside, and about 1/2 a teaspoon each of sour cream and salsa right in the middle. I found this out after carefully opening the flaky tortilla that resembled dried paper mache. The other items we ordered were edible, but so simple it wood be impossible to mess up- cheese quesadillas, chips and dip trio, and a taco salad (which contained cold carne asada as well). We came here last night and got the dip trio for an appetizer which is chips, cheese sauce, guacamole and salsa. Their chips are the best. They're thin, crispy and a little salty. My fav. The cheese dip is delicious and I always eat that first because I love cheese sauce. Their guacamole is actually really good. It has chunks of avocado and is nicely seasoned. I never eat the salsa really. There's nothing wrong with it. I just love the cheese dip and guacamole more. It's also homemade though. For dinner, I always get the rolled tacos with beef. They're like taquitos, which I love. They're fried, which I also love. It comes with a ton of shredded cheese, green sauce, and sour cream on top. Sometimes I get it chica style with onions and jalapeños and things, but yesterday I opted not to. Bf got two shrimp tacos and two carne asada tacos. He chowed down and didn't have any leftovers. You know, I was really excited for them to join the Red Mill fam until I finally got the chance to check the newest location out only to be left underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, though. The place is very nice and very similar to their other 2 places but the young waitresses here have a lot of training to do on customer service and hospitality. They're the first faces you see when you enter and are supposed to be happy to guide you along when placing your order. Yeah these girls are attractive but damn. No enthusiasm, no sense of urgency, offered minimal eye contact, and had little to no personalities. They seemed to have an attitude but whatever... The food is where it's at and I usually stick to the same fish or shrimp tacos and chips & queso. Can't really go wrong there and we left with satisfied bellies. I had questions about their hot sauces/salsas and the girl cleaning up the condiment station was very lukewarm when I asked if they were all the same or different. I mentioned one was pretty empty and she took no initiative to find me a full one therefore I ended up taking the almost empty one back to my table, unscrewed the top, and dumped what was left onto our tacos. That was annoying. Will I be back? Probably. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the brand new shopping center they're in is prime real estate! I decided to take some of the fam here, none of them have had fish tacos from Pelon's. I've been to the other locations at the Oceanfront and in Norfolk, and I was actually surprised that they was a new location that opened in the Hickman Place shopping center on General Booth Blvd. Luckily when we arrived, it was during happy hour, which offered a free taco when you buy 2. I ordered 6 fish tacos and their $6 margarita special. We were given a number sign and waited at our table. It wasn't too busy, maybe 2 or 3 customers when we arrived. There is plenty of seating available, including a bar area and a small patio outside. We decide to eat outside, since the weather was pretty nice. It took a little longer than I expected for our tacos to arrive but it was worth the wait because the kids loved it. I wouldn't say it's my favorite for fish tacos, but it's pretty solid. This newest location of Pelon's Baja Grill is located in the Hickman Place Shopping Center near the corner of General Booth Blvd. and Nimmo Pkwy. The place is not hard to miss when traveling down Nimmo Parkway. I haven't been to any of their other locations, so this was the first time I have been to one. I decided to try it out as I have heard good things from others about this place. My visit here was on November 23, 2019. It was a very rainy day when we came, but the place was pretty busy. The place is a fast casual dining place, so you order at the front and they they bring it out to you once it's ready. Even though they are a fast casual place, they do serve alcohol as well, such as beer. There was no wait to order, but took us a few minutes to look over the menu. Once we were ready to order, it took a few moments for one of the staff to come back around to the order area. The ordering process was pretty smooth. As a starter, the Trio Chips and Dip was ordered. I ordered the Hang Ten Baja Burrito, asking to have it with no rice, but the beans well drained. My mom was with me too and she got The Dude Baja Burrito. After ordering, we went to find a table to wait for the food to come out. With the place being busy, I wasn't surprised it took longer than normal to get the order out. It took about 10 minutes or so for the order to come. The Trio Chips and Dip came out a little before the burritos came out. The Salsa, Queso, and Guacamole were good. The salsa was a bit different that you would find elsewhere, but differences like that can be a good thing, making it unique. Now that the burritos were out, it was time to dig in. The burritos are filled quite a bit. It may look small, but it is packed with lots of good stuff. The burrito was very good, but did end up being messy for me as it was wet inside with all the bean juice in it. The flavors were good as well. I would go back up to the ordering area to get some more chips. It took about five minutes for someone to finally acknowledge me, even though they saw me and was calling for someone. Overall, this was a very good first experience with the food. Prices are higher than similar places, but that's to be expected since it is locally owned and not a national chain. The overall service still needs some work, which is why I am only doing three stars this time. When ordering, I said we were looking at the menu and they left to the back. There wasn't a chance to ask any questions as we looked at the menu until they came back. When I came up for more chips since a good amount in that first batch were soggy, it took so long to get someone to acknowledge my existence and finally get me what I had come up to ask for. Lastly, I know they are a younger bunch, but they seemed to have that feeling that they just didn't want to be there that day. With the food being good though, I would come back in the future again. Hopefully those training issues will be addressed by my next visit. If you are in the area and looking for a different kind of Tex-Mex, you should still give them a try. read more
