So many memories at Taco Bravo. During high school, we used to go there during summer nights and just chill outside. Grab some grub, and go sit over at the Weinerstizel and enjoy our food. Honeslty, we'd either be drunk or high but definitley alot of good times shared here. The food itself if OK at best. Nothing worth writing about, but like I said it has alot of sentimental value and when your under the influence you can't beat it. My favorites are the super tacos and super nachos. EMPLOYEES DONT CARE!!! QUALITY DOWNHILL!!! Came to this location at approximately 10:40am the guys working in the back ignored me to start. But I shrugged off, came to order and the man tells me to speak up louder and so I do. My order was exactly 8 tostadas and 1 super nacho with Chicken and 1 regular beef taco simple right?!?!? I'm charged $22 dollars and some change. The man finished my order and only gives me the taco and tostadas, I politely asked the man if the chicken nachos are at the bottom of the bag and he says yes I get back to my car and check the order and the chicken nachos are missing. I approach the window and politely ask the guy to give me my nachos that I have ordered and paid for he tells me I did not order nachos so he tells the other man that was working with him to re-ring me up a new order of chicken nachos which was another $11. Since I'm starving I think to myself screw it I'm going to just pay for another thing of nachos I try to let go of first mistake. I receive my chicken nachos and do not check them until I get home just to see that he gave me beef nachos instead!! I couldn't be more clear about my ordering and on top of that my tostadas were STALE and OLD!!! Horrible employee horrible service horrible just horrible. I've passed by this place many times, and kept on going because it looked pretty ghetto. My co-workers and I finally stopped by one day and when I finally got to see it up close I thought - it's even worse. If you can get past the messy kitchen and no glove wearing employees you might actually like the food - or at least the tacos. The day we stopped it happened to be "Taco Thursday" - It was .72 cent tacos all day so we went to town. I ate 3 but probably could have had 4. The tacos aren't huge, the shells are thin but crispy and fresh. The meat could be seasoned more but it was good. I love all things cheese, and they do NOT skimp on the cheese, and it's GOOD cheese, not that powdery crap that Taco Bell tries to pass off as cheese, but good freshly grated tasting cheddar cheese. My co-worker tried the Super burrito, but said there was nothing super about it - looked like a pretty generic burrito. Senses evoke memories. That's particularly true for taste and smell. Although at something to turn my nose up to at first, my curiosity got a hold of me. Taco Bravo has been on my list for some time. Perched on a corner of Bascom Avenue in the tony section of Campbel across from the Pruneyard, the former storefront of the classic (CLASSIC) Taco Bell still stands and in perfect accompaniment next to a Weinerschnitzel. Classic meaning pueblo-hacienda motif with walk up service windows and some seating within the alcove. Never mind the swarm of flies or being that my first visit was a little past noon on a warm spring afternoon. The waft of old grease and garbage from the bins not too far behind. The county health poster in the window is green and marked 'pass' is a confidence boost. Back in my cubicle, I pull two Bravo Tacos out of the sack and noticed they're individually wrapped in foil. Maybe not ideal as it did soften the fried flour tortillas a bit. But no matter because after one bite, it was like 1983 again. I just got my MVT, 105.3 was playing pop radio, and Pyromania and Thriller were the best selling albums. These were straight up Taco Bell's 'Taco Light' from back in the day. On my second visit, more flies again, and I end up with a Super Burrito. Like Taco Bell, it's the same parts but put together in a different way. Here's the thing though. We're pretty much spoiled by the abundance of taqueria burritos so really, Taco Bravo's are in a class by themselves. But again nostalgia as it could be decent rendition of the Burrito Supreme before the board room started messing with the menu. It's much bigger than the Burrito Supreme you can get at Taco Bell today and like Taco Bell, its loosely wrapped. The flour tortilla itself is rather thin so not sure if there's enough integrity there to handle a tight wrap. Both the Bravo Taco and Super burrito basically tasted the same and yet both weirdly satisfying. It's the generous portion of beef and yellowy waxy cheese that almost makes it. What could have made it? Taco sauce packets. Long timers will remember Taco Bell sauce actually came in little cuplettes. Sauce at Taco Bravo are actually pumped out of self serve coffee containers on the counter. Being that most upset tummies can be traced to the salsa...me thinks not. Rumor has it that this is the place to be on a warm summer's night. Late night supposed Mexican food cooking in the background set against the smell of Pine Sol. Chicken Taco was not great, even though I ordered beef. I tried to correct my order mistake and had to listen to the girl scream that she heard me order differently. This is why you recap the order, to straighten things out. When she was done slamming things around, she threw my order at me and told me I had an extra taco, but left out my nachos (which cost more then the extra taco I did not order). I used to come here just about every Thursday night for 99¢ tacos, but I haven't been able to make it as often since my job changed. Tonight I noticed that something has changed since the last time I was here. The tacos shells are thicker, harder and break more easily, and the tacos seem smaller now. It's kind of a bummer. OK. I get it. Your reading reviews to see if this a place that you want to eat at. This is one of those places that can run the gamut of reviews simply on expectation. If your a person that is expecting a fusion burrito with kimchi, or more traditional Super Taqueria fare than this place is not for you. I call this type of place Gringo Mexican food. If thats offensive to anyone it's not my intent, simply the best explanation I can give. Think Taco Bell on steroids. What you will get: Burritos: Tasty ground beef with beans (refried), onions, and a red (mild) or green (hot) sauce with or without sour cream and a ton of slightly cold shredded cheese. Tacos: Standard taco shell filled with ground beef, and lettuce, and afore mentioned ton of shredded cheese. I'm sure you get the idea. What makes this place great, and un-apologetic is that it serves your super mexican/gringo cravings: cheesy, spicy, filling...much better than Taco Bell can. Everything on the menu is a combination of the things listed above with different serving vessels...much like Taco Bell. However, the munchies go to's are the combo burrito (green sauce),the Bravo Taco (on a flour fried shell), Nachos (you can order a mini), and the awesomeness of shredded cheese. This place is not authentic Mexican (which is awesome!), but an interpretation like Taco Bell. Just much tastier with better portions. read more

I truly love this place. The super nachos are my go to. The portions (while not gourmet ingredients, of course) are enormous and inexpensive and really really tasty. The customer service is more often than not horrendous, but something about this place keeps making me come back. Yeah, the cashiers usually have an attitude and give 1 star service, making it quite obvious that they'd really rather be somewhere else at that moment. This place is right across the street from work, so I said what the hell I'll give this a try. Folks told me like many reviewers this place is like an "independent mom and pop Taco Bell". Yep, that's the right comparison. I think the flavor honestly is even more "gringo" than Taco Bell. This is total Gringo Mexican, there's no sugar coating it. I had a burrito and just some regular queso nachos. The price is awfully inexpensive for a meal so that's a plus, but I was very unimpressed with my burrito - even for the low price. The nachos were like your standard "ballpark" or 7-11 nachos with the velveta spread all over with jalapenos. I mean what can I say - sometimes you crave garbage and I love it. Taco Bravo is a place I think I deeply wanted to love inside because I have an affinity for mom and pop places with dated decor and that are unapologetically "no frills", but the quality just wasn't high enough. Since this place is so close to work - I will definitely give this place a second shot and a second review. I'm holding out hope. For now, it's just "eh". First off, don't go here expecting Michelin Star quality or service. Also, don't go here expecting anything close to authentic Mexican food. Taco Bravo is what it is: an extremely affordable Americanized "Mexican food" joint with giant portions that's open really late. That being said, it also doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. Taco Bravo is authentically cheap, filling, mouthwatering fast food. It hits the spot when you're craving some crunchy shell and ground beef tacos. Or when you want to get stuffed but don't want to spend too much cash. Or if it's really late and you have the munchies. My favorite thing on the menu is the chicken burrito, which is filled with juicy, delectable shredded chicken. One burrito or two tacos will quell the hunger of your average person. I also really like the super nachos, which even two people will have trouble finishing. Yes, they load up everything with tons of cheese. Yes, they use canned refried beans. Yes, it's quick, greasy and made by some strange looking --but very friendly -- dudes. But ever since I discovered Taco Bravo a few years ago, I haven't stepped in, or gone through the drive-thru, of a Taco Bell. Taco Bravo is rapidly going down the toilet. The service and food are extremely POOR. Today we went to have lunch. After waiting in the hot sun and being next, I ordered two taco salads. I was informed they had no taco bowls. They should have posted a sign stating these were off the menu. How unprofessional. The customers before us were given 6 COLD tostadas that were sitting out on the counter. When brought to the staff's attention, they were rudely spoken to by Taco Bravo staff. The customers were irate and boisterous towards the staff. On Taco Thursdays and Tostada Tuesdays, Taco Bravo piles these items high waiting for the next customers. I've been sold cold food here several times on Thursdays. The sodas are also usually watery and barely carbonated. They have never fixed this. We were bringing our own drinks because of this. It's great reading the reviews of people telling my same story of going to Tower Records then heading over to Taco Bravo in our younger years. This place ain't sophisticated and doesn't pretend to be. I actually think that's a part of it's local charm. You will have a burning bung hole tomorrow. And I STILL come here. It's like an old shirt you love and will never throw out. It's been with you for so long that it's a part of you. The food is ok, I guess. But what long time local hasn't come here on a Friday or Saturday night after the bars close to do a drunk/stoned food run. For me, half the love for this place is the experience and the nostalgia. Sketchy parking lot after 1 am, eavesdropping on drunk conversations around you as you wait to belly up to the trough, laughing at all the uptight stick-up-the-butt reviewers thinking this place is cuisine as opposed to just basic grub so you're hangover tomorrow morning isn't as bad. This is not a high-end or authentic Mexican place but it does have a fun retro vibe to it, and the cement sit-down area feels like you're at a picnic, The regular tacos are basic ground beef and shredded cheese---not Cheez Whiz and mystery meat like Taco Bell has, so you may like that better. Also a must try are the shredded pork burritos. The ingredients are very basic but there is a lot of pork in them, so you won't go hungry if you get one of those.The food is actually pretty inexpensive for what you get, but it doesn't hurt to use a coupon. A great place to visit, after a night out. My friends and I were looking for a place to eat after going to a few bars and we stumbled upon this one due to proximity and the fact that it was open so late at night. It's one of the few restaurants that are open that late in San Jose, so we figured we might as well try it. But overall, the food was not that amazing. It was good for a late night snack, but this is not a restaurant I would visit during a regular day. I highly recommend it after a night out though! This seemed like a good idea after last call and a night of drinking. After stepping up to the order window and asking what was good the guy behind the counter said that we couldn't go wrong with the Super Nachos. So an order of Super Nachos it was, with Carne Asada...wait... *um...we don't have carne asada* *...* *um...we aren't that kind of taqueria...we aren't authentic* *...* *we have ground beef!* *okay...ground beef...* So we managed to find the only taqueria in California that does not have carne asada, which is probably the one thing that any place calling itself a taqueria should have. I started to doubt our decision to eat here. Just to have a backup plan we ordered one of their chili burgers, with cheese. The wait for the food was a little tense, with that whole ground beef incident lingering on my mind. When we got our order we were in for quite a little surprise. You know those debates that nearly cause WWIII? Like which type of cheese product belongs on nachos, cheese sauce or shredded cheese? Well Taco Bravo has the answer for world peace...they put BOTH cheese sauce and shredded cheese on their nachos!!! and they put them on in extremely generous portions.
